I'm just saying most players don't have the capacity to enjoy a real sandbox.

a game milieu without lore is an aquarium without water.

Funnily enough, the "vet your players by making them to do 20 consecutive good form pushups" saves the day again. You'd be amazed how many lazy, unassertive and generally lacking initiative and really basic social skills shitters in general you eliminate with this simple trick.

Most players can't even be relied upon to show up once a week for 3-5 hours of a fun activity with their friends they explicitly and eagerly agreed to participate in.

>Nope, having varying goals is good
It is very bad, because it actively drives the party into conflict with one another in a COOPERATIVE GAME.
>nobody said the world should be empty
But if I have a setting with lore and npcs and things happening with or without the party I'm a failed novelist putting my players on storyshit railroad.
>It has clear goals since the players make characters with goals.
And then all their goals conflict and the game falls apart due to drama or never goes anywhere because the party is constantly fighting itself rather than any sort of external threat. At absolute best, nothing will happen. At absolute worst, the game will implode.

You don't play games and it shows.

I've decided to decease my internet time and blue light exposure, buy an ebook reader, and get used to finishing the day with some reading, instead of all the other things that give me insomnia.

What /tg/-related books have you been reading anon, or what you think what other people should read too?
I've read Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit before I knew what the hell ttrpgs even were. Same with the original Dragonlance books. I was thinking of picking up Elric of Melnibone and Original Conan the Barbarian. Already read and enjoyed Eisenhorn, most of the Slayer books with Gotrek, first 1.5 of the Black Company books. And dear god I haven't read books for fun in so long, what have I been doing?

would recommend sixteen ways to defend a walled city and prospors demon by K.J. Parker.
If you dig post apocalypse worlds: The Earth Abides and A Canticle for Liebowitz are wonderful
>>
My meagre addition to this thread is recommending John Gwynne's Bloodsworn Saga. The ending kind of sucks, but getting there's pretty fun. It's about vikings fighting over dead gods who were animals rather than the Aesir and Vanir.

Assuming you mean Terry Goodkind's magnum opus of philosophy series the Sword of Truth, I can only conclude that in not recommending it you lack moral clarity.

>David Gemmell

I second Gemmell. His Drenai novels are my favourites. I read the Rigante and they're fine enough stories, but not my favourites.

And it is true that he tends to write around the same subject and archetypes. Gemmell I think does it rather well, and his books flow very well. They read easily - the language isn't baroque, overwrought, or difficult.

If we're reccomending romance novels, I'll recommend Immortals After Dark. It's an urban fantasy series about invariably super tall chads with big dicks plowing shortstacks.

Solid space opera. Main characters get thrown from seeming local political bullshit into thousand years old plot by robot civilizations that apparently didn't die out and still insist that this is their galaxy and everyone else is just living in it.

That's really sort of besides the point, even if it's a potentially interesting discussion to try to draw lines about the meaning of a word that we use all the time in this hobby.

The point being that "lots of people talk about LA, therefore we can pretend it's the bog standard bad one" is goofy behavior.

>lots of people talk about LA, therefore we can pretend it's the bog standard bad one
But that Anon specified “people play it and then complain, similar to how people play and then complain about 5e,” not “people talk a lot about it so it must be bad.”
Trying to change what's being said is pretty goofy too.
>>
>>96637227
The question about whether that's applicable came from nowhere though. The original thing that was asked by the Anon above was "do any of you also dislike how this is, and go around it?" Some people do like bad ends where it's just brutal suffering, but not everyone does. That's not a bad thing about the system, it's a matter of taste.

The /btg/ is dead! Long live the /btg/!

Transit 13G
Zero CX-3
Sabre 31D
Starfire
Suzaku
Hammerhead HA (primitive, but your choice when and what you play)
Deathstalker XF-68
Banshee

Not that many, but at least some variety.

It's not historically accurate and is basically all hollywood WW2 tropes nor is it balanced and was designed from the ground up for tournament play. Shit like oops all AA halftrack lists for germany is the dominant meta because they are cheaper than soviet infantry, the devs are also gigantic werhaboos and ameriaboos while all the other factions get the bare minimum of care or effort and soviets are made to be utter fucking shit on purpose.

Clash of Spears, SPQR or SAGA - which one makes for the best ancient skirmish game? CoS seems to be the only one that pretends to strive for historical accuracy. SAGA has the widest range of available factions and once you learn the rules you can play almost any premodern period. SPQR revised edition is surprisingly tight and consistent, kind of feels like a middle ground between SAGA and CoS.

I went with the funeral. He arrived with lightning flashing, invited Ireena to his castle, and she made an excuse that she needed to clear her head for a while. She said the party could escort her for a while. This is why she ended up asking them to take her to the big church in Vallaki to escape him. I had my Strahd really not care about the party until that point. He didn’t even acknowledge them until Ireena brought them up.

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to TSR-era D&D, derived systems, and compatible content.

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons as played in the game's first decade — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching meta-plots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started.

Sorry I've expressed myself badly.
I do intend to run a short dungeon first, starting directly at the entrance. This would work as a 'test adventure' (1-2 sessions max) for the players and I before going into a bigger, long term sandbox thing (and that's where I haven't decided what to pick yet). Ty for the link !

Works fine as is. Characters with lower level gain xp at a faster rate and catch up.
The range of levels 1-4 have a decent amount of crossover for dungeon denizen generation. Careful approaches to encounters is key, but it always is.
iirc there was something about the ad&d dmg dungeon level-monster hd table that was odd at 2-3 and an anon made a more gradual increase version a while ago. I'll see if I can dig it up.

Fun fact about halflings!
-They're short
-They're fat
-They're legally distinct and NOT owned by the Tolkien estate
-In 5e they have the ability to reroll 1's on checks, which isn't that impressive because only faggots believe in critical failures
-In AD&D they're restricted to only fighter and thief classes, and they could only reach 6th-level fighter, so playing a thief or a multi-class are the only viable options
-Halflings have a slower walking speed, making people who play halflings fucking bellends
-Despite this halflings are so cute that I still play them when the party needs a rogue/thief

Also, this is firmly a D&D thread, but halflings can be found in other RPGs like Pathfinder or WFRP. If you want to discuss halflings in these settings you are doing it wrong, but I can't stop you.

A thread to talk about minis and games which fall between the cracks, or peoples' homebrew wargames.
The >>>/tg/hwg thread doesn't entertain fantasy (for good reason) and the other threads are locked to more specific games.
This thread isn't tied to a game, a publisher, or a genre, let's just talk about fun wargames. Any scale, any company, any miniatures.

>Examples of games that qualify.
A Song of Ice and Fire, Argatoria, Batman Miniature Game, Carnevale, Conquest: The Last Argument of Kings,
Deadzone, Dropfleet and Dropzone Commander, Freebooter's Fate, Frostgrave, Gaslands, Judge Dredd, HeroClix,
Kings of War, Maelstrom's Edge, Malifaux, Marvel Crisis Protocol, Masters of the Universe: Battleground, Moonstone,
Oathmark, OnePageRules, RelicBlade, Rumbleslam, Stargrave, Sludge, Urban War, Void, Warcaster, Warmachine, Xenotactics...
...and anything else that doesn't necessarily have a dedicated thread.

>>
>>96636125
What argument are you trying to make? Yeah - the Magistrate is the Supreme Authority? Do you not understand what 'treated as equals' means, and that Raynor only was permitted to talk because he HAD that authority?
If Raynor were just a shitass Marine, he'd never be given the time of day on any net whatsoever in the campaign.
>>
>>96634463
At best such approach would make Amon side look more active force rather than scripted enemies, waiting to be killed by Mary Sue. Everything else will remain the same.
>>also Raynor now gets to choose between Tychus and Kerrigan at the end of WoL
Then you would need to rewrite the whole story with asspull prophecy because most of the players would waste Queen of Blades.

>>96636563
>Do you not understand what 'treated as equals' means, and that Raynor only was permitted to talk because he HAD that authority?
He had zero authority. When you meet him he doesn't have any troops with him. He is marshall of some backwater (literally called Wasteland if I remember correctly) part of the backwater planet.
>>
>>96636125
>Like Dominion and Confederacy?
Seeing as they literally rescued and recruited Duke, that's not the best argument.
>>
>>96636807
>At best such approach would make Amon side look more active force rather than scripted enemies,
An entire campaign working for Amon might actually give his forces and hybrids some personality. I've no idea why Blizzard didn't do a villain campaign for SC2; that shit helped flesh out antagonist factions in their previous games. Like, imagine if instead of us getting to follow Arthas' journey further into damnation and how he resurrects Kel'Thuzad and destroys Dalaran, WC3's undead campaign was about a group of undead who broke free and became heroic underdogs trying to stop the Lich King*. Just think how characterless the Scourge would be without the player spending an entire campaign helping Arthas ruin the world further with his skeletal new buddies. Or if Brood War's Terran campaign had not put the player in the shoes of a UED officer, the lovely fascists from Earth would have been completely flat if we didn’t get to play as one of them for an entire campaign.
>basically FTF's forsaken missions, but in vanilla WC3 and with (supposedly) far more heroic leads and the player not having any time to get familiar with how Scourge operates from an insider's perspective
