Writing General: 'summer days' editionWelcome to /wg/, the thread for all /tg/ related writing. Whether you're plotting your campaign, trying to come up with a character backstory, or just trying to write some setting fluff, this is the place to post it. You don't even have a campaign, just an idea you want to develop? You're welcome here. While the rest of /tg/ is arguing over monstergirl mating and which way rivers are supposed to flow, we're here to help you turn your thoughts into an actual finished product. As the successor to the Storythreads, we're also open to /tg/ related fanfiction (D&D, Warhammer, Battletech, whatever). In fact, if you've written any vaguely /tg/-related short stories, you can try them out here. We also have flash-fiction challenges from time to time. There's a discord for writers herehttps://discord.gg/6AwKHGFThe previous thread can still be found in the archive here>>95441002And finally an archive of /tg/ fiction can be found here:http://1d4chan.org/wiki/Storythread (dead link, but may be resurrected one day)https://2d4chan.org/wiki/Storythread (page missing, wiki still up)Comment too long. I guess my batteries are empty. Can't put words down. But taking a break from writing… the guilt will consume me.
>>96589964I just read random visual novels and stuff and use that as a basis for my own ideas
>>96595385Even if you don't write much, or don't like what you're writing, it's good to write a little every day just to stay in the habit. Maybe start another, smaller project, then go back to what you were writing when you feel recharged.
>>96605316Wrote an article for my blog that nobody will read.I know what the issue is: finished some milestone, important pivotal scenes that mark the start of the real conflict in the book. With a lot of mental fixation on these scenes, and them being finished (and hopefully good), all that mental energy is spent.Tension, build-up, release…Yeah, will force myself to just write a bit each day. The energy comes back.

Closest thing to that is that I think DivineZ only has 2 maybe 3 seasons left until another timeskip/cast change and with that they'll probably introduce new mechanics into the game. >>96603145i think that they layout is too clean and tidy, with the river cutting through being way to straight and of equal width but that is a very typical problem in city mapmaking these days because the very programs used arent good for approximating the incredibly close and meandering architecture of medieval, renaissance and age of sail cities and the different physical features found in them like small hills, rivers etc
>>96601553I don't know why but the farms in the south east and what appears to be a small patch of wood attracted my attention
>>96603670Thank you, perfect. You got two of the spots that are supposed to draw attention. >>96603514Yeahhhhh it's not great. It's a commission that I'm paying for from my doodles (pic related) so I'm gonna tell the artist to actually lose the straight-line banks of the river.
In a medieval/fantasy setting, I was planning on having a nation that had an abundance of metals at their disposal, and were supposed to be higher "tech"/quality compared to the others(even though magic and stuff exists). How effective or capable would an army be if the main weapons of their troops were crossbows instead of swords, maces, etc? I don't want them far enough along that gunpowder weaponry is the standard loadout, so just how viable *are* crossbows? I'm trying to imagine them like a more modern military, but obviously guns, engines, and the like don't exist and its just armored men with crossbows, ballistae on wheels, deployable cover, repeating variants.
>>96605744Crossbows (which in this case were functionally much more similar to bows than later variants) were used heavily in ancient China, but after the advent of not completely shit armor, crossbows fell out of use as a primary weapon of war in favor of bows since ranged warfare became a numbers game. There was also the repeating crossbow which was more of a personal defensive weapon analogous to a derringer since they had crap range and penetration.Later European crossbows were used as a way to offload the cost of training soldiers onto weaponsmiths since they took less skill to use than bows at the cost of being much more resource intensive to produce and maintain and having a lower firing rate. At that point they were mainly a weapon for sieges, instead of open warfare, where you're going to be dealing with emergency forces with less training and a lot of protracted firing from cover to make up for their low firing rate and incentivize their range and accuracy advantage over bows.Magical weaponry enhancements/magic as an alternative makes any analysis I can offer conditional, but to be frank, absent armor being behind the times or magic making them fire faster or shred armor, specializing in crossbows doesn't make much sense. Like maybe you could sell it if it's a wealthy nation especially concerned with national defense, but that would be it.

>>96606152That's a happy ending. Didn't exactly prove you wrong with the reaction there either. What was the initial sign the GM was fucked in the head?
I'm so sick of this one guy in our group. His self-esteem is completely in the gutter, and whenever the dice fuck him over he starts vocally moping about how bad he is in the game. Additionally he's dumb as a sack of bricks and always has the worst understanding of the rules. Similarly if things go his way he starts gloating about how he finally got things done. When he runs games he always undertunes encounters and then mopes about the players being too powerful. And he's the kind of a player who's main interest is in combat and getting things that make his character more powerful, but he's just the worst at it.The other people in the group (who are excellent to play with) don't have nearly as much of a problem with it as I do, and he's one of the founding members though.
I once played a neutral evil ninja in a good aligned group of demon hunters and the DM tolerated me for some reason.

How the hell am I supposed to account for this shit without having 9 mega lethals in the chamber just so I'm not the most useless babyboy in the world during any surprise combat?
