Hell ya brudda, I walk into a store and buy one of the 300 games in stock by reading the back of the box and seeing if it says 2-3 players on a sticker. Fuck being informed before consuming
>>
>>97279221
>>97279195
i'm just looking into them and adding them to the list, there's things like heat, which i have been putting off for 2 years, and stuff like old king's crown and castle combo, which i don't expect to be interested in 11 months from now
>>
>>97279448
tried heat, expecting to buy it. Ended up playing it 3 times and forgetting about it.
Tried Castle combo, expecting it to be very mediocre. Played it +100 times and I keep recommending it (thanks to the anon that shilled it here, wouldn't have touched it otherwise because of the trannyesque art)

Point being, castle combo is awesome. As an aside, I found the expansion to be rather lackluster, one of the few games I think basegame is perfect as is
>>
>>97279228
unironically this. I'll probably buy 0-3 games next year in just the way you described. After 11 years in the hobby my hunches are pretty good, and if I somehow wind up with a turd, I'll sell it. If you really have a big list of podcasters and youtubers that you have to consult as you plan out your purchases then you have a shopping problem masquerading as an interest in board games.
>>
>>97271276
The 2p game has some different configurations or something? Does it play the same?

Mid-Colonial Island Adventure Setup & System Help
Hello fa/tg/uys and a happy new year. I'm planning a new campaign and would appreciate your collective wisdom. I'll lay out the pitch and would like your thoughts, ideas, and especially system recommendations.
The year is roughly equivalent to the early 1700s. The players are new arrivals or long-term residents of an island colony. Mere weeks after their arrival it becomes apparent that no ships from the homeland arrive. Ships sent out for help or trade simply vanish. The colony is now utterly isolated. Resources are finite, society is beginning to crack, and the unexplored interior holds ancient secrets.

>Resource Scarcity
No contact with the outside world. Every nail, bolt of cloth, and ounce of gunpowder is precious. Gold is the main currency, and it matters—for buying scarce supplies, hiring help, bribing officials or mayby hiring trainers if gold can be tied to character advancement.
>Low-to-Mid Magic
Magic is rare. Players won't be casting spells at the start. It's something discovered in the forest ruins or bargained for with strange spirits mid-campaign. Church sanctioned magic is the exception with high ranking members of the faith having access to considerable magical power.
>Healers for Hire
There are a few lowly priests of the faiths that can perform rudimentary healing rituals but demand some gold or favors. This type of healing and warding, especially against diseases, is used by the church to maintain power and influence. They're NPCs, not party members, at least initially and the most common source of magic.
>Zero to Hero
I would really like for the player to start really low powered. More akin to semi-skilled commoners than competent adventures and it should take time for them to actually become strong and capable. I would like for them to eventually become big players in the island. Maybe even hold titles or positions of power.

Ok I am expanding on the idea a bit and bumping my thread.

>The Church of Unity
Official religion of the Empire. Actually the only religion in the empire. Their whole doctrine is that there is only one god and all other gods that were worshiped previously were either aspects of the one god and thus to be assimilated or demonic creatures from the outer dark to be destroyed. "Aspects" are still revered but not as gods on to themselves. The Church has successfully hoarded all magic knowledge in the empire and keeps it to themselves and locked in monasteries and libraries only to be used on imperial degree. Of course this isn't always the case.
>Apostates
Apostates are ex members of the church that gained magical knowledge but decided to leave the church behind in order to pursue their own goals or for other, mainly not dogmatic reasons. Officially they are not allowed to practice magic but rules are made to be bent. Sometimes even the Church procures their services.
>Heretics
Heretics are ex members of the church that gained magical knowledge and use it to spread heresies, false doctrines or to consort with demons. This individuals are hunted with extreme prejudice.

(1/2)
>>
>>97277072
Magic that comes outside the empire, like the one the natives use, is to be assimilated into the Church or to be destroyed.

This can create an interesting point of conflict for the Separatists since they will want access to magic but in order to gain it they would have to either get the Church(at least the ones on the island) on their side, hire Apostates willing to risk becoming heretics since working with the separatists could be seen in a very bad light, go straight for heretics and adopt another dogma or go to the natives in search of such knowledge.

Necromancy is considered the most vile of all magic since in requires a living sentient being corrupting the gift of life, the greatest gift the god of unity provides, for their own selfish purposes. Demons, technically not living beings, can't practice necromancy but they can corrupt mortals into doing so. Or so the Church claims. The Not-Aztecs are of course avid necromancy practitioners. All those bodies from the human sacrifices? Free menial labour and shock troops. They could play the de-facto "bad guys", raising dead and searching for more powerful and deprived knowledge in order to finally take the island for themselves.

ACKS seems interesting I should look into it. I was also looking into SotDL or Mythras. SotDL seems approachable but lacks XP progression that I believe is essential for a proper from zero to hero. I don't know much about Mythras but I like the classless approach.
>>
>>97277102
You probably want to skip ACKS. The autism and granularity is not on a healthy level, and you're going to end up wasting far more time just going through its "procedures" than you likely would even just making a whole brand new system out of wholecloth. The quality of the rules really leaves much to be desired, and it is all built around some odd assumptions regarding its "roman-esque" default setting, and most of the game seems inadvertently (and occasionally deliberately) designed to be as un-fun as it can be. I have no idea why anyone would recommend it beyond them never actually using it.

OSE serves as a solid foundation though, and is a much tighter and more more polished system. Sure, it doesn't do much beyond updating some now-ancient rules a little here and there, but it's generally inoffensive ruleswise and fairly accessible.

>SotDL
It's an odd one. Part of me really wanted to like it, but the "tone" of the game never really suited me and my group may have actually started to actively dislike it, because every so often it would get unnecessarily edgy. The real thing that got me though is how the Boons/Banes should work well in theory, but in practice the d6 is a little too unwieldy for the purpose. I feel like using d4's could have helped in regards to smoothing over some of the odd randomness, but you can't really build a system around constantly rolling d4s (because they don't roll).
>>
>>97271332
I really like this aproach, where everythings count. Low magic but having to bargain with spirits, its also my jam.
Systems, Beyond the wall for his magic system/having a village/colony sounds apropiate if you go OSR like.
Mythras, wich si very good for anything down to earth, would be my second option for system.
I really like the Colony stuff, tough I usually go for the bronze/iron ge amalgama with lots of inspiration from conan and other pulp stuff. Of late I been reaing books about whaling (because its the nearest thing to monster hunting we have done) and only one whale like a right whale would be a boon for any colony or village, so monster hunting and hte rest could be very well be the diference with starving or being secure.
>>
>>97271332
You could homebrew that off of ReConquest very easily. The skill system would work and the magic may also (the magic is generally rooted in Scandinavian folklore and has usage conditions and restrictions associated with that, maybe alternate it so that natives have their own rules for casting magic, colonists also do, different gods and spirits respond to them, learning the other's magic would probably be an ordeal and require being accepted into the other culture as one of their own. It also natively has that divide between folk tradition magic and church magic, with sorcerers dealing with spirits and bards using divine magic)

It also has a system built in for terrain generation and exploration and very detailed rules for travel, survival, building frontier societies. The game is about resettling a 'lost' continent.

It's a completely different flavor, but that's easy to change up for your own use. Oh, and the system was made by an autistic white nationalist and convicted murderer, if that matters to you.
>>97271531
One thing to consider is that gunpowder does not need to be imported and can be made rather simply. Conquistadors made it after arriving in the new world. The ingredients are simply sulfur (found near volcanoes as mineral deposits), charcoal (burning wood), and potassium nitrate (saltpeter) which can be found in bat guano deposits (caves). Basically, even an isolated colony could likely produce their own gunpowder. Depending on the timeframe of your setting they may also be aware of the "French method", of isolating saltpeter from urine primarily from stables, that began in the late 1700s.

Chat GPT's answer is rather intriguing, I'm going to try to get it to give me some more authoritative sources. It is really annoying too because 3.5 is such abandonware at this point, why does it matter if I reference their creatures, when they don't make stuff for 3.5 anymore.
>>
>>97279214
When asking about this stuff, enable web search and peek at the sources.
>>
>>97279453
Yeah I read some guys blog and it wasn't hugely helpful.
It really does sound like you have to make such vague references. Like "there is a tall horned humanoid, a minotaur with earth elemental talents, you can learn more from the third Tome of Monsters on page 113, if you know what I mean" but even that might be too much.

Honestly? Might just copy some stats for monsters, change their ability wording (probably improve it, if anything) and do things that way. Just rename it and change it enough. Like those guys who made "OGL safe illithids" for Pathfinder.

ironically this solution screws over WotC more because it bypasses their content entirely, and means that fewer people will buy their books (not that most people would be anyway, nor is WotC even making money off of 3.5 books anymore)

Hello everybody.
I am planning a dwarf based campaign (all my PCs will be dwarves and the majority of items, feats, monsters etc will, in some shape or form, be associated with dwarves as a race) for next session.
Can anyone please recommend any d20 3.5 books that are, for the most part, dwarf themed.

So far I have used Races of Stone (WotC), Dungeon/Dragon Magazine articles, Quintessential Dwarf I/II (Mongoose), Heroes Of High Favor - Dwarves (Badaxe Games), Races Of Renown - Hammer & Helm (Green Ronin) and Advanced Race Codex - Dwarves (Green Ronin).

Thank you in advance.

If you created an Amazon setting, what would it be like? By Amazon setting, I don't mean a single society among many where women are primarily the fighters, I mean a setting where every society is this way. Some question to start someone off:
>What genre would you make your setting be?
>Do women tend to be musclegirls, men tend to be twinks, both, or does comparative height and build not change?
>Is the magic that men and women are capable of different?
>For pursuits that don't involve combat (such as hunting), are ones that are considered masculine and feminine swapped? Which ones?
>While women would dominate military matters, what about other goverment matters? Do those end up women dominated?
>How does courtship change?
>Did you Amazon setting start off as such in-universe or was it some new development that lead to it being that way?

If you want to be realistic, it's impracticle. The society that doesn't let women fight wins by sheer numbers. Pic related.

But the answer is "fuck it: some magic bullshit." Because fuck it. If you wanna do that just have some magic bullshit.

Sorry I forgot to state the premise that: assume 1/3rd die in war. But you get the idea. Not letting women fight produces reproductive success that outcompetes your enemies. That's why human socieities were roughly egalitarian until the advent of war.

Also Dark Lord DOES look into Vader, the fact it also focuses on other people doesn't detract from it imo. If you want more Vader then try the RotS novel and Rise and Fall I suppose
Or if you just wanna pog at Vader doing shit just go to the canon Marvel comics. Though avoid the Aphra shit
>>
>>97277442
One thing you quickly learn is that, it doesn't matter whether it's Disney or EU. 90% of expanded media is shit made by somone who either doens't give a fuck or just wants their Jedi/Mandalorian Power Fantasy. The only real difference between Disney and EU is that EU's biggest fucking retarded trainwrecks were in the places nobody gave a fuck about (Video Games, Comics, Novels, ets.) Whereas Disney's biggest fucking retarded trainwrecks are the ones they put the most time, effort, money and biggest fucking neon signs imaginable ontop of to make sure everyone is looking at just how unmissably, stupendously badly they fucked up. (High Republic, Shows, blockbuster movies, AAA games, etc.)

EU's got some good video games. Rogue Squadron games are great, but you really need a Gamecube for them. Old Republic games are also good. Also, the Dark Forces Trilogy. And if you can figure out how to make them run on modern computers, the TIE Fighter/X-Wing games are a lot of fun.

For comics, make sure to stay away from Dark Horse. There's a couple of gems, but also some of the most retarded shit ever smeared on paper and printed comes from Dark Horse Star Wars and i'm talking stuff that makes you go "Wow, and i thought the High Republic was written by retards."

Generally, any book written by Zahn is anywhere between a masterpiece and at least passable. His Disney stuff has been about the same.
>>
>>97278013
>Implies Disney and EU have a comparable amount of shit content when Disney has literally zero passable content and the EU has tons of gems that easily overshadow its more questionable parts
>Says games, comics and novels are "shit nobody gives a fuck about"
>Implies you need consoles and modern computers for old Star Wars games when most have been republished in PC form with mods that fix them and the ones that haven't can easily be emulated
>Forgets about Battlefront, Empire at War, Republic Commando...
>Says to stay away from Dark Horse when they made some of the most kino content in the CWMMP, compares it to High Republic
The only thing you're right in is calling Zahn content great. Otherwise, you're the biggest retard to have ever found his way into the EU.
>>
>>97278096
>implying similar level of quality.
Just because its cool to hate Disney doesnt mean that they've never done anything right. It just means you're afraid to be uncool and have opinions of your own.
>Saying nobody cares about games.
Tell me, would you have ever heard of "Masters of Teras Kasi" and "Lost City Of The Jedi" if people hadnt gone out of their way to make fun of how laughably awful they are?
>Needing consoles
Yes, you can play Rebel Strike on Dolphin. That doesnt mean it runs well.
>Forgot about games
No, i jusr saw no reason to mention games that very recently got highly advertised remasters on modern hardware. I give people credit for thinking for themselves (Unlike yourself)
>Dark Horse Good
Much lime most comic series, yes, there are some good ones, but nothing Disney ever did came close to Jedi Tales' "Remember, Obi-Wan. The reason Jedi dont have sex is because one time, 2 Jedi tried to bang the same chick and, long story short, the entire planet exploded. Good night!" And all so many stories that pretty much add up to EVERY SINGLE member of Jabba's crew going "I'm grabbing what i can and get out... Right after i watch this Skywalker kid get fed to the Sarlacc" that is so retarded im surprised it wasnt in The Acolyte.

>be GOO tomelock (5.5e)

Does the spell still emit a thunderous sound that can be heard up to 100 feet away?

The most recent game I ran, which went to level 16, actually had the players operating out of a home base for more than half of the campaign. My bigger issue with bastions is that most of the effects aren't particularly interesting.

Just have a frontier fort or something with a lot of area to explore around it. That way, you've always got somewhere to return to, even when you run off in pursuit of whatever immediate goal.

Trench Raiding With The Lads Edition

>What is Trench Crusade?
An alternate weird history 28mm/32mm tabletop skirmish game still in a pre-release playtesting phase but with the full release slated for this year. Based on the art and lore of Mike Franchina, whose illustrations you may have seen floating around on /tg/ for a several years now, and designed by Tuomas Pirinen, one of the original creators of Mordheim. It's grimdark, it's visceral, it's awesome, and it's very Blanchitsu.

>What Trench Crusade is not
TC not an excuse for you to discuss IRL religion, history that didn't occur in the game, culture war shit, or discord bullshit on /tg/. Keep it on topic.

>What's the QRD on the background?
The Knights Templar turned heretic and opened the Gates of Hell when they took Jerusalem during the First Crusade. Over 800 years later the war is still ongoing as technology has developed to a pseudo diesel-punk WW1 standard and a third of Humanity has sided with the Infernal Princes.

You really should pay attention to gear as it's one of the major IS failings.
They're in this weird limbo of not having much of the advanced tech like NA/HL, but also not really having much of the weird/ramshackle stuff that the other factions have.
They have no decent multi-shot weapon (machinegun is usually quite hard to leverage properly), and no weapons with that much punch outside of the Bull only weapons.
And even with those the Murad is a bad choice for the Bull at +0 ranged. And is also the only "artillery" weapon that doesn't ignore long range/cover in some capacity, while also causing no injury rolls on anything other than what's directly hit.
So good picks for HoW to steal are:
NA - Auto-rifle, SMG, Heavy Flamer, Satchel Charge and maybe Machine Armour.
TP - AT Hammer, Auto-pistol and Martyrdom Pills.
My personal picks are the heavy flamer and auto-pistol as those give you anti-armour punch and a multi-shot weapon that a dual pistol melee focused Alchemist can really mke work.

I meant weapons of other factions, in terms of effectiveness for myself.
I am fairly aware of the paucity of IS gear.

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere. And as we enter this happiest and newest of years, remember: 2e was never an old-school game, bait is for reporting, and fish is for smoking! Happy new year, grogs!

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:

>What was your best OSR gaming moment of 2025?
BX newfag campaign before my proud fighter player left the main adventure. His wizard buddy found some magical short sword in a locked casket which he secretly wanted to keep for himself. The beastmaster and the goblin took notice of the glow however and tried to confront him but the wizard knew his judo. Finally the beastmaster put the wizard in a headlock and the fighter approached them. Instead of going for that magical short sword, the fighter took some valuable pearl off the wizard and the beastmaster immediately released him wanting nothing to do with that. I've lost my shit at that moment and couldn't stop laughing out loud over the internal mess my players engaged in.
P.S. I miss the fighter but unfortunately he doesn't want to interact with two other players anymore. I'm still running a rival adventure party with him in the campaign which causes funny developments. But at some point I don't know whether I am able to keep it up if the main group seeks to face him or we enter the wargaming stage...

Sux. Interacting with nerds blows, man. Really makes you realize why normalfags insist on normalfagging sometimes.

/osrg/ can you all help me with a list of games that explore the idea of skills occupying a 'backpack' of slots that get crossed off for whatever reason similar to Cairn? looking for ideas to hack a game together.
