The DMG refers to eight different types of players. Was it correct?

WotC was basically the only people to actually survey players, so it's the closest thing to an empirical taxonomy.

No, pic related is an objectively better list. What the DMG describes is somewhat true, but it's very theoretical rather than practical.
>>
>>97281043
That assumes some effort is made to correctly interpret the data, and im not seeing a latent class analysis. Besides, this categorization is at best descriptive of broad trends in the data, and its not information we can actually use

I propose that players are interested in the game, and their interests will be specific to prefered facets of the game. The likely classes are
>interested/disintrested in exploiting mechanics
>interested/disinterested in character drama
>interested/disinterested in social intrigue
>interested/disinterested in the setting
>interested/disinterested in combat
>interested/disinterested in chaos
>interested/disinterested in puzzles
>contemplative/impulsive playstyle
>>

Sadly, to my knowledge, nobody else tried. They come up with Grand Unifying Theories and worked backwards from that.

MtG didn't use to be this way until EDH became the most popular format. When playing MtG casually meant taking a Standard deck to your weekly FNM, proxies were not allowed as it was a sanctioned tournament. Since EDH is a casual format, people never really gave a shit and that sentiment remained, fortunately. The price of MtG singles since the advent of Commander has increased dramatically, where even your average casual deck non-proxied will run you fro. $250-$500, unless you're explicitly playing a budget build. I unironically switched to playing YGO as my primary card game as it is far more affordable these days.
>>
>>97277430
Most players don't give a fuck about proxy/OCG/AE cards, HOWEVER the owner will absolutely kick your ass to the curb if he catches you with one during a official tournament, because he can lose his OTS status over it. It's only allowed in HOTU tournaments, but then again HOTU tournaments have all sorts of weird rules, my lgs has its custom banlist and also lets you use a card from the official banlist ie you can run pot of greed or apollousa in your deck.

UN-ignoring the elephant in the room; the field spell deals lethal amounts of burn damage. I've had some oxygen thieves say that it's just like a regular OTK build, but you can block battle damage pretty trivially as long as your opponent isn't on a gimmick build like Mikanko, Yubel, or heaven forbid Ritual Relinquished. You can't block effect damage, or at least not reliably with fucking anything in the current meta short of One Day of Peace in Runick (which is to say, not reliably with fucking anything in the current meta). It also doesn't take a hell of a lot to pivot it into being an FTK build instead.

A single card should not be able to repeatedly burn your opponent for over half their starting LP at the start of every single turn. If it only happened during your own standby phase? Sure, the archetype's theme is Judgement and you're punishing your opponent for their opulent playstyles when it only happens during your own standby phase.. But it does it every. single. turn. It's just not right.

Good point, I'running a spelljammer campaign, so when someone wants to join I just ask them:
- Have you watched that old Treasure Planet movie?
- Did you like it?
- What kind of character would you like to play that would fit in that movie?

I think this have helped a lot to set the tone of the campaign.

My man. Good anime recommendations.

It is good and I like it better. The newer one is still very weeaboo but the older one comes from a more innocent time where no one cared, at least not publicly. It's totally unabashed about being some western fantasy of what Japan was like whereas the remake tones that stuff down. I don't think the new adaption captures the spirit of the novel well, it tries too hard to be less weeaboo which removes a lot of the charm, especially that of the thoroughly implausible love story that tracks through the novel and 80s show. The 80s also didn't try to force me to learn Japanese to understand what they were saying in Japanese, unlike the newer one when they left bits unsubtitled so that the viewer could be just as confused as the European characters at times. While I can see some good for leaving off subtitles in some productions, I don't think that helped the story telling in this story.

Compare the 1960 sand and sandals epic Spartacus with its wonderful saturated colours, over the top spectacle, square jawed never sets a foot wrong hero to a grimmer film like 2000's Gladiator with its slightly less square jawed and slightly flawed hero who lets his desire for revenge overcloud his judgement, throws in a little brooding, some moral quandaries, some emotional angst over the death of his family. Both very good films and both enjoyable. Same for both Shogun miniseries.

While they wasted him and this was not up there with his best work, this was the first thing I saw Toshiro Mifune in before I knew who Toshiro Mifune was.

Didn't hurt that it had Yoko Shimada as Mariko either.

>At least they are mostly fun, even if the stories are often retarded. I recommend Jedi Outcast, Jedi Academy, Republic Commando, The Force Unleashed.
Pretty much this. Force Unleashed is a lot of fun, despite the fact that it is probably the single most power-fantasy-Black-Hole-Sue level writing job ever put into the franchise. Starkiller is somehow worse than what the staunchest "DiSnEy RaPeD tHe CoRpSe Of StAr WaRs!" people claim Rey is... But, the gameplay is fun.

I'd also say that the Ewok Movies are at least dumb fun. Heavy emphasis on the dumb.

Bounty Hunter Wars trilogy is really slow and drawn out, listen to the abridged Audiobooks instead.

Tales of the Bounty Hunters is better. BHW uses the Shadows of the Empire Comic characterization for 4LOM and Zuckuss and sucks because of it, contradicting Tales of the Bounty Hunters entirely till the third book TRIES to make sense of it and still fails.

Crimson Empire is a classic with yet another protagonist who looks like Clint Eastwood
There's Shadow Stalker, practically unknown for some reason
Mara Jade By the Emperor's Hand is another thing worth reading

No Dark Empire, but I do like parts of it
There are some Boba Fett comics but I'd only recommend them if you like the guy
Never bothered with the cheesy comics from the 70s/80s, but some people like them

In general, all the good stuff was released after the prequels, in the early 2000s

They're just what we would previously have called spergs. Tabletop games have always had them, they just have a more leveragable social excuse currently.

I have one player in an online game I'm convinced is trans (or at least deep into the identity BS) and they're, like, fine. They pay the 2nd most attention despite being on call during the game and the fact they want to fuck everyone means they actually engage with the NPCs on some level.

The bard player in my high school game that trooned out was an annoying loudmouth and only got louder after they trooned, as in literally yelling shit at the top of his lungs at random. I do not really miss playing with him at all.

Do you include seasonal changes in your campaigns when time goes by?

If so, what do you implement int the world to showcase the changing seasons?

I personally include sea raiders who begin assaults on the kingdom's shores in spring and through summer, who then return to their homeland in fall to winter it out. So essentially a raiding season for my world's vikings, like in real history.

For some reason WW decided to let Set roflstomp the Osi
ris Mummies, vampires, & wolf alliance which should arguably BTFO anything given that the splats rarely work together. Yet every other depiction of Set is him being a pissy tantrum throwing retard who could fight his way out of a paper bag.

My only conclusion is that he's some sort of inferalist with a wyrm connection. & when he wants to fight Mummies & the forces of good health gets a massive power upgrade
>>
>>97281112
The issue with the infernalist angle is that Mummies operate on True Faith rules. Set would be double-screwed by 2 weaknesses to faith, being an infernalist vampire.

I want to get into TTRPGs, but have only one person I can force into this. What are some good TTRPGs that work well with two people? Ironsworn? I see some recommendations of that. Any advice for a first timer? Would be the one one running the game as well.
My only experience in this 'field' is running RP guilds in World of Warcraft.

Furthermore, it would be preferred if the game, for this first time, is a bit more simple. Just to dip our toes in. See how it is.

I would like to talk about the Chronicles of Darkness game line Deviant: The Renegades, or more specifically, one major upcoming supplement. Deviant was released in late 2021, and has had three additional sourcebooks since then. A new supplement, Black Vans, has been in playtesting for a while, and is currently being previewed.

I am not being paid or sponsored to promote this book in any way. I am just very fascinated by it, and indeed, I already ran a mini-campaign using the playtest material.

Deviant is, by default, a game about playing angsty, scarred superheroes who either fight world-manipulating conspiracies or work for them. Black Vans is a toolkit full of variant rules, quick NPC creation, variant character types, and variant genres. These variants range from the minor to the dramatic, completely overhauling what were once non-negotiable, foundational themes and mechanics. Maybe your character is not angsty or scarred at all, perhaps they are a """""regular human""""" like John Wick or Batman, or the campaign might have nothing to do with world-manipulating conspiracies.

These variant genres include cyberpunk, high fantasy, post-apocalypse, space opera, and superhero emergence.

This is a beefy supplement. For example, one chapter alone dedicates 38,000+ words to playing other monsters of the Chronicles of Darkness: Beasts, changelings, demons, Sin-Eaters, hunters (entirely separate from the variant rules for """natural""" superpowers), mages, mummies, Prometheans, vampires, and werewolves. No additional supplements beyond Deviant are necessary; the rules are self-contained, allowing the group to play a monster mash of an urban fantasy setting without needing a daunting 7+ books. And yes, they are supposed to be balanced against one another, so a vampire in the same group as a full-fledged mage is probably some older Kindred.

(Continued.)

>have you considered supporting the player transforming into one of them
No but the succubus has her own Corruption table. Other than that, that's more for homebrew especially considering how succubi and incubi work in Labyrinthus
>All it would really take is having XP costs for the relevant traits and feats, and maybe a framework
That's a lot of work, balance-wise, especially if you read the succubi and vampire Traits
>maybe a framework to better come up with the rituals to do it
The framework is Oracles+Imagination. You don't always need the game to tell you what to do, just get the idea and go
>a journey to become a THE Tentacle Monster
There are many ways to mutate, mostly through corruption. Mutagens are left vague so you can come up with something. Or make a homebrew.
Most of the stuff I add is often something suggested which is simple, but if it's complex either it requires me to put effort OR to use homebrews as inspiration and currently I'm focusing on testing and making sketches. if you want to can post your ideas in the discord so you can also test them and have other test them too

It is what it is. I was sorta achievement hunting at that point, the character had become pretty strong (being a vampire is actually pretty great, at the potential risk of a death spiral if you ever get captured/defeated) and I had just arrived at the Fae Forest to learn a ton of magic, since the free massive Magic you get as a vampire had been pretty underused so far.

>>97279597
Going off of memory here, when she visited the city her first sewer mission (the homebrew one) went about as poorly as it could've gone without her straight up getting defeated. She had to escort a city official down to a blockage and on the way she almost got defeated by like... three slimes. Because she relied mostly on blocking and so the acid + slimed debuffs were stacking up on account of poor rolls. If she didn't have the clean spell she might've lost there, which would've been insanely embarrassing as she already killed an Orc Boss in his stronghold at that point. Then she encounters a pair of sewer crocs at the mission's objective which messed her up, shredded her armor into nothing and by the end she was at half health. This was all made much worse since I ruled early on that if a vampire feeds while escorting an NPC, they gain +5 Vigilance reduced by 1 per success on persuasion, so I was trying to avoid drinking meaning no healing for free after combat. The problem compounded when she ended up saving a kidnapped girl on the way back. By the end she got like +6 vigilance from the two NPCs seeing her feed and was butt naked.

That looks an awful lot like 5e...

Where'd you snag a copy?

Call of Cthulhu has some great duet adventures and is usually easy to run as lewd horror. Check out Does Love Forgive.

Also Delta Green, which is basically the same game.

Welcome to the New School Revolution General, the thread dedicated to games derived from the OSR movement.

>What is NSR?
>NSR is a subcategory of the OSR, it mostly follows the same play style but experiments further with the mechanics and settings.
>Broadly NSR games have a gm, a living world, are rules light, deadly and focus on emergent narrative, interaction and exploration.

>What is this thread NOT for?
Meta discussions or drama of the games and its creators aka shadowboxing with twitter, reddit and the OSRG (frens with osrbros)
>stay on topic

>games
Shadowdark, into the odd, mausritter, cairn, mörk borg (and its hacks), dungeon crawl classics, mothership, knave, troika!, whitehack, blackhack, old school essentials (we know this is just a retroclone), etc.

>I don't recall how it goes in ItO
Similar but deadlier.
Failing a critical damage roll means you're out of action until someone else gets to you and you have a short rest to restore HP. If no one gets to you in an hour you're dead.
Sounds like the Miami 86 helping each other up is faster and fits the fleshwound action run and gun vibe. Combat in ItO can get very deadly very quickly if enough party members get hit and taken out of action. Tends to result in TPK or a few survivors running away in my experience. Might try the 86 method next time.

I'm looking to run Dead Weight for Mothership as an introductory one-shot. Does anyone have experience in tracking/progressing time as the ship falls apart? I'm particularly aware that as written Renato’s body breaches the reactor two hours after the incident. I'm leaning to have this occur about halfway through the night, with the activities needed to jettison the pearl artificially eating up in-game time so the climax at the seventh hour comes at a faster real team pace. However, having the player's work up until that point undone is a bit of a risk.

It makes sense. ItO wants you to avoid combat as much as possible, M86 really wants you to get a shoot out with the cops.
There's also rules for chases, very small, but they're there and you get some example cars and boats so you can use them as reference.

It's a nice ItO clone, nothing crazy, but covers some bases in case you didn't know how to approach them and has some nice inspo. I also got it from the share thread so it's a lot for free.

Secret countdowns never worked for me. You could go the BitD route and have a pizza slice clock on the table, more gamey and players can act accordingly to clear canonical information.
I usually lie a bit because anything you do to inform them of stuff they shouldn't use to decide is gonna break immersion. At that point just make it as dramatic as possible.

try narrating knock-on environmental effects like stuff detaching loudly in the distance or have a fire break out and an alarm go off. if they spend time investigating, give them a fair estimate of time left.
