Post your favorite mundane monsters or stories of players underestimating them because they are just big animals. Giant crabs are always fun
>High AC and okay HP, not easy to knock down
>Show up in groups, so they can't usually be awful struck
>Only appear in very specific types of locations, so they are very telegraphed
>Deal massive damage, especially if they hit both attacks

Every time crabs show up, it's a good (or at least memorable) time.
>>
>>97831046
And it's always fun to attack their weak point for massive damage.
>>
>>97831061
Even better since you know they are based on actual Japanese history.
>>
We were playing troika for a one shot and were basically delta green operators clearing out a ship full of monsters. One of the encounters was supposed to be a speed bump with goblin-level mooks, but poor dice rolls had one of us on the ground, being almost beaten to death by a mook with a frying pan.
>>
>>97831307
Gotta give that guy an upgrade. When a mook beats up the players, he get's a class level (or the equivalent for your system)
>>
>>97831446
He got a few lead medals soon after IIRC, but that was funny, after a few dice rolls I felt the need to drink another gin tonic, it was that good of a time.

Jolly good time

>Cyberpunk 2020 vs. Cyberpunk RED?
Cyberpunk 2020 is the second edition of the Cyberpunk TTRPG by R. Talsorian Games, set in a (then) future inspired by film noir and the dark science fiction films and books of the late 20th century. It focuses on simulationist gameplay and lethal near-future combat.

Cyberpunk RED is the latest edition of the Cyberpunk TTRPG, set after the devastating Fourth Corporate War. It focuses on more balanced, streamlined gameplay and is currently supported by R. Talsorian Games.

>>

Yup, conceptually the players would be negotiating with and battling daemons in the neo-NET ghost cities built by AI.
AIs/Daemons would themselves manifest and manipulate the physical world like gods by controlling extant tech and nanodust particles.

Roll for the Galaxy expansions modify this. The alien orb expansion gives 15 points per player or 15 tiles as the end condition. There has to be a balance but a group could also house rule and say that they want to see what 16 turns feels like this game. You know that could be interesting. Maybe even have two or three scoring rounds and add them up? I had this discussion a lot about It's A Wonderful World. That game is tight and leaves most people feeling like they need one more turn. I do agree that there needs to be a balance but for myself personally I like feeling the pressure of knowing I can't waste one turn. I feel like I'm generally expecting the end conditions of most games I play but I realize that not everybody is tuned into that while they are focusing on playing. I will also say that I felt like I enjoyed Roll for the Galaxy a little more when it was shorter without the expansions. The expansions are cool but some games can drag now.
>>
>>97830142
Hmm I think Roll does more than Race, if only because of how uneven turns can be. Race you have a pretty clear idea of someone's tempo and most of the time it's only going to ramp up compared to Roll's mitigation vs luck factors.
>>97830752
>>97830752
that said
>leaves most people feeling like they need one more turn.
is the golden rule embedded into all euro designers - any game that goes a turn too long is blasted, any that goes a bit short is forgiven. I usually don't have this problem more so than games that just take too long to spin up, which is usually why I default to all the quick-start/shorter game rules (Imperium, AFFO, even Slay the Spire as of late) even if the game is potentially more swingy and railroaded

And what exactly is the point of this downtime game, which is followed by a phase with a single multiplayer game that immediately ends the campaign? You'd be better off doing a mid-phase 1 special scenario, or just starting your next campaign slightly earlier.

I really love hex tile games so I made one where cities are dice (to represent the size) and you draw tiles from a random bag like Carcassonne and place them according to rules (like you have to contribute to existing forests or mountain ranges on the edge until they're a certain size, before you can start a new one).

The game was very visually and tactilely satisfying to me, which is important since it's being played in the physical realm. But the girls, as you can see, are a bit small. So I bought new ones.

I haven't painted them yet but I am hoping to add some numbers to them, almost like Catan has.

So therein lies my question (and I know I'm leaving a lot of details out, this game is very different from Catan, but it's basically a 4x tabletop hex tile game). My question being:

Do people actually like rolling dice in Catan? I think in Catan it's a very elegant way of adding depth to the game.

Currently in my game, you roll 1d6 per population of a city, and for each 5 you roll you can get a resource of the tile your city's on, and for each 6 you can get that or an adjacent resource. But that leads to a lot of dice rolling. By the end game you might be rolling 10 pools of dice each with 6 dice, and making decisions along the way.

So obviously I want to simplify it.

But the question is, do people even like the dice rolling in Catan? Or would they rather the randomness be removed from it?

Basically there are 5 different biomes and 5 different animal types. You place tiles and animals.
Scoring is based on animal behavioural patterns, so salmon runs in waterways are worth more points the longer you can make the water way, etc.
Its quite simple but has a lot of clever placement. There's also points for the most linked same biome type, etc.
More advanced play has different behavioural patterns for variety. Its a really clever game that links placement and theme quite well.

Java's an older eurogame but also good. Its a 3d hex stacking game with area control and height, basically trying to throw the biggest and tallest party.
>>
>>97827206
That looks cool. Any mechanic highlights? I'm into games that don't involve dice, but I do also like that element of randomness to throw some chaos into the works. I think choice should go into resource collection, possibly with multiple resource types per hex, but not more than three.

>>97827197
I might have to see if my FLGS game library has it and take a look, they have a lot of free games people can just play, to encourage people to go there. I already play there and buy drinks / snacks so I wouldn't feel bad looking at their sample copy. Kind of sounds like Carcassone, but with more meeples.
>>
>>97827278
Java's randomization is from tile draw. Its been at leas t2 decades since I've played it so the standout mechanics are not going to be there.
Check out Cascadia for sure if you see a copy, its a solid game.
>>
>>97829096
>Java's randomization is from tile draw.
Do you think that's enough by itself as a random element for a game?
Or I guess I would say, do you think that as a substitute for the random resources of Catan is good?
Or would two "axis" of randomness be an improvement?

>How do you paint eyes
A long fine tip brush WITH a nice belly so it can actually hold some fucking moisture and doesn't just dry out instantly.

Then most importantly: a drop of retarder medium mixed with the paint. This stops it from drying too fast and gives you some time to actually work.

I load up my brush, test how it's flowing / dotting on my thumbnail, then I just go for it. Brush stroke starts from the inside of the eye then to the outside, then flip the model upside down and do the other eye with the same movement. Then come back in with the skin tone to touch up any mistakes.

Drop some paint on my wet palette > Dilute it > Retard it > Load brush > Test on thumb > Make Adjustments > Test again > Deep breath and just fucking do it.

Dotting the eyes is exactly the same procedure except it's a quick dab instead of a horizontal movement. I don't usually dot the eyes. I personally prefer the look of just painting the eye whites.

Interesting time you've had here Riaanon. You had to fight some of the worlds bigger forces and stood you're ground. Even if its a less powerful setting thats still impressive. A good milestone.

One of the D&D 3.5 jumps can get you there, adding an Alignment subtype is a thing that can be done with a ritual, but an easier path would be Tome of Radiance. Reaching level 20 in one of the three base classes gives you the Good subtype.

Just to clarify, I'm not denying cape comics' issue with being incapable of escaping decades-old status quo and just retreading the same ground ad infinitum. I'm saying it's completely coherent to criticise that in comic books (a non-interactive narrative medium), while still saying it's fine for wargaming fluff (something which exists first and foremost to give flavour to an interactive game) to remain largely static. Two standards for two things which do different things for different reasons, like

No, a standard monster of level X is, in theory, a vaguely threatening challenge for a PC of level X.

Given even moderate optimization, a party of four level X PCs will completely crush an enemy group of four level X standard monsters.

>>97830710

There are way, way, way too many to meaningfully lay out.

One that works even at low heroic involves a Flensing Weapon, the Yakuza theme, and a cranked-up Intimidate modifier (e.g. Wandering Duelist background, warlock Beguiling Tongue/Wrathful Aspect).

Hit an enemy, even a solo, with your Flensing Weapon. Activate its daily power. Now, use your jacked-up Intimidate modifier and the Yakuza theme's Ruthless Demonstration power to force the enemy to instantly surrender.

It will always be an example in what not to do with your brand and game.

I went through the PHB a bit and it read like a mess. Though I read tons of 2e, then 3e, so it's coming from both of these perspectives.

Thank you. I had been collecting monster creation rules (sort of) from different editions and was curious about how well figured out it might be in 4e.

I was also curious if 4e would have at least a marginal take for hypothetically running Council of the Wyrms.
