I've been on a space kick recently and want to run a sci-fi space campaign as the GM. What are the best systems for a flexible gaming experience without the autistic complexity of something like Shadowrun? I'm looking for a system that can run "magic" (Psionics, occultists, dark gods, etc) and high-tech weaponry and ships and stuff as well as madness mechanics mutations, cybernetics, horror elements, etc. Visiting weird planets, dealing with intergalactic politics, smuggling goods, assassinations, dealing with alien cultures, learning dangerous magic and technology, etc. I also want the players help make the setting so I'd prefer a flexible system that can handle a multitude of scenarios with cool aliens and stuff.

I've heard of Traveler, Starfinder, etc, I just wanna know what system(s) I should focus on learning about first. I'd rather not run it in a Star Wars DnD conversion or Feelings and Lasers. This crowd usually plays DnD or very simple games but are open to other games too. Again I've tried Shadowrun and I'd rather a system that isn't over-complicated and just has the hacking take up 90% of the screentime.

I'm guessing you meant Stars Without Number.
>>
>>97198455
Traveller has sanity mechanics in the Companion, but they are bad, because sanity mechanics in general are bad.
>>
>>97198206
>medium complexity
>scifi kitchen sink, bolt on options for various things like psionics, mechs, etc.
>faction turns for players to engage with in making the setting
>basically everything you need in one book
Take a look at Stars Without Number. Even if you don't like the mechanics the world building and tables are useful for everything else.
>>
Scum&Villainy and Stars Without Number.

I use both. S&V for the actual rules and SwN for setting creation (because the "original" S&V setting is too tropey, even though I use some of its factions or rescheme them.
>>
>>97198206
The Dai Dark setting do looks fun to run.

>It's a generic 1984 fascist government
It is the Empire GL describes in interviews from teh 80s, no idea what kind of fanfiction you constructed in your head that makes you believe something else.

>the fantastical elements the Empire has in the OT
Those all died with the prequels and teh TCW cartoons.

>the director behind Andor (and the ones behind Rogue One) are unimaginative hacks who hate fantasy and fun
I bet you loved Jar Jar and clap every time you see an Ewok.
But really, both R1 and Andor are the highest quality, film-making wise, we've seen in SW.
Mando S1 and S2, and maybe Solo, were good, too..But the rest was abysmal.

>Actual SW fans won't enjoy a show that degrades SW's space opera for nothing
It sheds light on a new aspect of the Imperial Era. But maybe you should go and watch something with more lightsabers. I hear Acolyte has lots of that.

Why would I take time out of my week to plan a session with friends if the same can be achieved with a multiplayer strategy game?
Or why would I bother 4-5 other people and not just play Dwarf Fortress?

Why indeed?

That's what I'm asking, dumb fucking nigger.
If your granular experience can be replicated in a program with better granularity, why would anyone bother with asking less efficient humans to do it? The reason is that the players provide a story, which you dismiss as womanly

I'm going to be an uncle soon, what are some good games to introduce a young niece or nephew to TRPGs? Preferably something simple and easy for young minds to understand, and which can be enjoyed with a single player and their DM.

It'll be a few years anon. For now encourage playing with legos or army men and making up stories. They're not going to have consistent enough focus to do much gaming for a bit.
Then start with simple board games like Hive.

Are there any mech games where the mechs are a sideshow to other vehicles? I like the idea of blowing up mechs with superior conventional vehicles but basically every mech setting ever made exists to justify the opposite of that happening.

>>97181850
Heavy Gear is like that. Yes, the focus is still on mechs but tanks and helicopters are king of the battlefield. Think of Gears (mechs) as replacement for infantry.
>>
>>97181850
You have an autistic hateboner for mecha. As so you should either make your own system, or better yet-hang yourself.
>>
>>97181850
I did have a vague idea for a story, the last tank battalion of a fallen nation in an era where gundam type mechas have taken over, attempting to survive and prove their mettle. Would probably take a real tread head to make anything of it though.
>>
>>97196332
Not entirely. Even 'gears are cheapo" aside, they have striders for their "yeah we want a mech that owns anything" purposes.
>>
>>97200693
No, striders are just less effective tanks that are better in the extreme terrain of terra nova

There's no real indication that the Sidereals could have done that, especially not back in 1e. They could have given them some extra Ability dots (1e loved this), but they didn't even do that. 1e seemed to have presented the Lunar condition as wholly unknown to Sidereals in spite of the two having spent millennia together during the First Age and during the initial war against the Primordials.

And Solars? They were mostly presented as clueless about it, too, even in the Twilight book. While there's some odd teaser about the prospect of the Twilights maybe being able to restore the castes, at the end of the day, the Lunars fundamentally changed their Exaltations in 1e (GCG actually flat out said this in one of his rants, I believe the one that included the term "rar!"), and we'll never know if anyone writing canon ever intended this to be a possibility.

The only thing we do know is that Cult Lunars go it raw and sideways.

>>97199981
He was fairly tight-lipped about most everything, so it's still anyone's guess.
>>
How do you guys like to portray the Unconquered Sun, personality-wise? I know he's not really a relevant character for a vast, vast majority of games. I've just been idly thinking about the best way to handle him lately. I dislike the Glories: Sun version of him and really hate the story about him surrendering himself to Primordials to save a single mortal's life, but I think there's enough talk of righteousness in relation him since the very beginning that he shouldn't just be a sleazy opportunist, either. I've been thinking about a framework of righteousness that's consistent with him rebelling for personal gain and being cool with Dragon King heart sacrifices, and I'd welcome ideas and discussion about this.

A couple of different ideas I've had: Sun's basic worldview might actually be pretty close to the Immaculate Philosophy, obviously not in terms of Dragon-Blooded supremacy but in terms of it being correct for each and everyone to stick to their place, not reach above it and focus on doing their job to the absolute best of their capacity. It is right to give king fealty and tribute, and it is right for the king to enjoy the privileges of his position, but the king, too, should strive to do his job of protecting and maintaining what is his. Feeling that Primordials did not act in a manner worthy of their position could've been a part of what prompted him to rebel. On the other hand, I like the idea of some kind of a bold, ambitious, excellence-based morality, where righteousness is striving to reach as high as you can and inspiring others to do the same, where settling for less is worthy of disdain, and where preventing others from pursuing greatness or convincing them to abandon such pursuit is the heart of wickedness. In that framework, I'd see the UCS as a genuinely loving father-like figure who wants everyone to be all they can be, but stern and demanding, intensely disappointed when people fall short of their maximum potential.
>>
>>97200635
>1e seemed to have presented the Lunar condition as wholly unknown to Sidereals in spite of the two having spent millennia together during the First Age and during the initial war against the Primordials.
I have to wonder if there could be any reason for that. There are definitely unshaped raksha who could erase or blunt memories of someone who walked into them. The Sucking Tide drinks names, and the Winding Path eats the memory of your origin, destination, and name, as examples. The latter might have made everybody forget that the Lunars who walked it came from Creation? Seems like the kind of curse that could both exist and do the job.

Overexposure is a poison. Every modern fantasy story (99% of which are isekai) has like thirty different big titted bimbos with personalities that make brick walls look downright personable. Louie's adventures take place maybe a smidge before the actual Lodoss adventure starts. And also it takes place in the northern part of the Alecrast continent. Following the novels, Louie and the gang go all over the contient, and in "Season 3" of the novels, second volume, it takes Louie's gang to Lodoss Island. As far as the Lodoss story is concerned, it takes place (in terms of the OVA), between episodes 8 and 9. In terms of the Novels, it's after the first novel "The Grey Witch"

I don't really think that Matrix is cyberpunk. Not even the first one, although that one at least explores some of the themes that are explored in cyberpunk. /v/ related but play this game, Black Book is an amazing in depth dive on Komi-Perm folklore and myth. You play as a witch and its very hands on with the supernatural but it littered with information on Permian folklore made by people from there and it doesn't go into typical Russian folklore stereotypes.

Indeed I am also fascinated by Siberia and its very hard to find someone doing justice to it. There is an aspect unfortunately that both due imperial Russia doing obvious colonization methods and urbanization and overwriting it with orthodox Christianity and then the Soviets being hostile to folkloric traditional practices, has erased a lot. It is redundant to say it, but Permians, Chuds, Komi, Nenets and other Uralic peoples are NOT ethnic Russians, they have their own language, they had their own religion and completely different pattern and way of life compared to the sedentary Slavs.

HP means health points. HP can also mean horsepower. Of course mechs don't use HP but would it be a fun idea to give it a different name like Heavy power or something and refer to HP as if it could be health points or horse power interchangeably? Or does it make too little sense to even make the comparison?
>>

I thought you were going for an alternate power system where the players would have like, hand made gear or enormous hunting weapons or magic or as the other guy suggested, looted monster parts into swords or something like MH, but they're just using cucked versions of conventional arms? They have heavy rocket launchers but with limited payloads or something for what purpose? You're literally just piloting shittier mechs with shittier guns?

This is a local lord setting. A pointless hard cap on player power levels so that the epic combined arms guys with their grey realism mechs are untouchable and actively defended by the constructs of the setting, with a fiat they can call in if they ever got owned. It's like a city besieged by monsters with town guards that go up to level thirty.

I don't think there's anything about this that wouldn't sound better if you either smoothed out the power level so the monsters aren't just a nuisance for scrubs with shit gear and added a little tension (if we can't stop them, who will? Oh yeah the military would own them lol), or if you at least made the players mystical, heroic, using bizarre abilities and went full scifi MH or dragons dogma. The players don't have to be the strongest, but you need a unique hook with lots to work with to at least not come off as weaker versions of the NPCs.

HP means, "Hit Points," because the term was originally used in naval wargames, to refer to how many, "hits," a section of a ship could take.

>HP means health points
I cannot recall a single game that actually uses Health Points as a term.
