Vance said in the DIscord that Infernal charms that aren't explicitly Yozi-flavored can and should be recycled and useable by Solars. His example was the sorcery charms but it would also apply to other abilities.

>>97169592>>97169600Yeah, all of that sounds about right. While I plenty of issues with the system, I've still happily run several 3E campaigns, so "as good as it can get for 3E" isn't as faint a praise as it might be taken as.>>97170440>>97170676I rather like both Infernals and Exigents, myself. I think they're pretty different from each other, thematically, conceptially, mechanically, role-wise, lore-wise, pretty much in every way, so not really alternatives or competitors to each other.

Does anyone else have a problem with people at their lgs just not liking talking about cards? As in, after a game I like to discuss strategy and suggestions, but if I won people are too salty to talk and if I lose their too smug to talk. I've yet to see any serious problems with it from my admittedly quite limited experience of it. The system seems to attract such derision and I want to know why.
Late to the thread, but it was really nice to read through.I can only speak for myself, but I've found that I enjoy deciding when and what I roll (unprompted) as a player in certain scenarios because I enjoy roleplaying failure as much as I enjoy roleplaying success. I like the unpredictable aspect of it and find it refreshing. In my admittedly limited experience with pbta, the GM dislikes this because they feel the rules are not being respected and (I guess) they are forced to invent consequences for failure when it "makes no sense" to the story. This is likely more of an issue with current GM in particular, and I can't really figure out where it's coming from, but i feel some of the advice in the book is being taken out of context. They generally cop out on consequences, and few bad things ever happen to our characters. The world is constantly under threat, but as soon as a player puts even the slightest effort into combating it, their efforts succeed (even if the player is not really into it).I can't imagine this is a common issue with the system, though I'd be interested in hearing if others have had similar experiences. The rules seem sane. Guess I just needed to vent. Carry on.
>>97171176>This is likely more of an issue with current GM in particularGiven your description, I would say so.For my own experience, I have played a campaign of Masks, and run two campaigns of Avatar Legends. Among PbtA games, these are very closely related, since they come from the same developer. They're still distinct in terms of the ways they mechanically pull of their concepts, but there are familiarities between the archetypes used for playbooks, and both games are about youths figuring themselves out. I also tooled with Dungeon World for a little while at one point, and it was a fairly mixed bag of an experience, and I've been planning some things for a game of Perfect Draw.In my experience, both as a player and a GM, I found that I was interested in consequences. Both myself and the other GM were interested in dealing them out, and myself and the other players were interested in the complications caused by the game mechanics. An unexpected and/or undesired consequence can really stretch your brain and lead to some interesting character moments, and I feel like these kinds of games are very good at creating situations like that. Especially for the games that I've especially favored, where your characters' inner struggles and emotions are core to the themes, a situation going sideways can really demand you to get into their feelings and even allow yourself to make bad choices on purpose to resolve something (the problem at hand, their frustrations, etc).
>>97171314Exactly! Complications and consequences challenge the characters and are fun to play out for the players. I can't help but feel that in the game I mention in >>97171176, the GM has already decided the story they want. It's weird, like even when the players are into it, sessions end with this weird "yes, but", like the game is some kind of discovery writing excercise and every session needs to end on a cliffhanger.Weirdly, whatever danger there was at the end of the last session is usually resolved within the first 10 minutes of the next session.Glad we're not the norm for the system. Probably time to call it quits or have a talk.
played a few different PBTA games with different GMs. every time without fail it hits a point where they give up on the whole "however..." fail-forward or "you get a bonus" extra, whatever the particular effect is.like you can see the exact point they sign and simply say, "you try to pick the lock and...yeah, you just don't pick the lock."
>>97171176>The world is constantly under threat, but as soon as a player puts even the slightest effort into combating it, their efforts succeed (even if the player is not really into it).Oddly enough I have had a similar experience. Consequences were usually more tame or limited, and it sort of felt like the GM was waiting for the ideal moment where things would be more dramatic or high stakes. I think it might be a mix of the GM already having an idea, even subconsciously, of a sort of rough map for a session, on top of possibly having trouble coming up with good consequences on the fly. I can distinctly remember more than a few times where someone rolled a 7 or 8, and the GM just gave up on having a consequence and just had it succeed outright.

>In the game Werewolf: The Apocalypse, the Garou (werewolves) were made to defend the earth from the cosmic forces that threaten to tear it apart. The Garou fight against the Wyrm, the destroyer. It is a struggle against nearly insurmountable odds, especially considering the rivalry between many tribes. These rivalries make it almost impossible for the werewolves to present a unified front against a cosmic force that pervades reality.>From this morass of hatred and mutual betrayal, there is little hope that the Garou can emerge triumphant against a foe so well armed as the Wyrm. Why was XP for gold largely abandoned as a way to reward players?
>>97161391Gold-to-XP rewarded a single gameplay loop. It worked, but players wanted different accomplishments rewarded (such as killing monsters or achieving goals), instead.
>>97169915XP is experience. If every monster in the dungeon is killed by something that's not you, you venture into an empty dungeon and leave with piles of gold, you shouldn't get XP.You should get XP for doing things and learning, progressing your character. Not for getting something as easily replaceable as money.
>>97169915>i mean if you come up with some thing like beating != killing (sneaking past, bribing, diplomacy, burning the tower down) then i do think that's lovely.Yeah, that's why the quest XP works. Because you just calculate all the monsters in there, and the final tally can be the same with the assumption that the PCs have gotten past everything one way or another. >the main source of XP (at least in D&D) should be from gold as XP.It's fine if you prefer that anon. Gold as XP has plenty of upsides. It just doesn't do you any favors to act clueless about how other XP systems function when you're going to say one is the best.
>>97169977Mundane makes the fantasy stand out more. Realism makes the milieu more grounded and PCs feel exceptional having those magic items at later levels. Suddenly that glowing sword is useful when the GM actually enforces darkness penalties. True adventuring is not a fucking holiday, it's braving the unexpected dangers. It's going to the Lonely or the Doom Mountain and facing all the unknown challenges between beginning and the end. That's why it's so exciting because you don't know what is out there. Preparation for the journey IS the main game itself. If you waive simple climbing, darkness and nourishment challenges by making them too easy, suddenly spells like Fly, Light and Create Food and Water are much less useful and thus do not feel like powerful magic. Resource management is the whole point of player skill and thus better player enjoyment. If anything goes and everything's fun and easy all the time it will not feel real or earned. If you remove those chores, eventually the game devolves to a slippery slope towards Mother may I and improv theater. That's fine if you don't want to actually play a game that can be won or lost, and feeling you earned the result afterwards.
>>97169977mate it's the point of the game. you can't "gloss over" e.g. items and equipment because they're not "flavour text" or "fluff", they're....just what the items actually are. you use rope how rope is used. you need food to survive. read the X half of B/X, where it gives an example of outfitting an adventuring party for actually travelling. if your attention span is at "can't we just SKIP AHEAD to the city?" would you not want a tolerance reset, of sorts? i want to play Lord of the Rings, not a shounen anime.
