But in live action it's extremely easy to pull of stuff like that because you just need a guy who knows how to point the camera and obtain those effects. In 2D they need to not only come up with them but also draw those frames/shots from scratch with those aspects in mind. Much harder to do, and that's the impressive part - pulling them off in 2D. But you don't even think about that.

Andy Weir writes like a redditor in the sense that he loves to highlight le science and use a lot of Marvel/big chungus humor but without going too deep in the philosophical themes of his settings. Rewatch The Martian and you'll see the same. It's like writing 2001 but only focusing on the spacecraft. It's not a bad movie, but it will quickly be forgotten.
I would give it an 8/10. It's well made, well-acted, has decent CGI that isn't too distracting, and it keeps most of its worst impulses in check. I found the alien charming and I imagine most of whether you enjoy the movie hinges on whether you can tolerate him. The "le science" shit is mostly nonsense and probably the worst aspect of the movie, but it's never taken too deadly seriously. It's mostly a buddy comedy at its heart with sci-fi window dressing.
I thought it was cute. 4/5. The pacing is really weird where you have the climax, but then there's another 30 minutes and ANOTHER climax. There's not nearly enough time spent with Rocky and Gosling together.
