As someone who watches lots of JAV, I suspect it may be about the drama. Most of their stuff is not unlike western that it’s a straight to the point fetish thing without any real plot, though likely still more than western. But the NTR stuff is always telling a story as it has to build up the characters for the NTR to ‘feel’ right. This gives it a more dramatic flair and I think hooks people more than the other genres. Western porn doesn’t have tons of dramatic, hours long NTR either.

Hollow Knight's biggest strength is that everything about the Knight's one toolkit is both good and fun/satisfying to use. Their choice to break that one toolkit up into multiple pieces, then chain each piece to really gimped moves in the name of balance, both bloats your options while also restricting them.
The majority of bosses you think are toolspam bait are really charged attack bait. Tools are *really* for weaseling your way out of what would be untenable situations in ganks or enemies in difficult terrain due to Hornet's lack of iframes.

Sounds like a fair trade? You can build damage, you are required to perform better to not die, and in return the fights are faster. You can build defense, you can take a lot of abuse and ignore some mechanics, but in return the fights are slow. Building insane defense is usually more resource or know-how demanding than acceptable offense, so becoming immortal (albeit slow) is a fun reward for the effort.

More games should use a damage threshold system.

Keep in mind that the grind in this game makes PSO look tame
The achievements are a good example
There’s one for killing like 50,000 enemies
You would think this is normal, because screenshots make the game look like a musou with tons of enemies per map
Wrong
Each mission has maybe 20 enemies
So to get that achievement, you need to load in and out of missions an ungodly amount of times
And if you’re thinking “oh that’s just an achievement I’m not autistic enough to get those mindless grinding points,” keep in mind that the game fully expects you to play that many missions normally because of how scaling works in this game
The version that just released in English, Megaton Musashi Wired, is a fusion of the original Megaton Musashi and its sequel/expansion
Once you finish “part 1” of the story, the level jump to part 2 is extreme because they were initially spaced out and Level5 expected part 1 owners to grind for part 1’s endgame before releasing part 2
What you get here is a very disorienting difficulty spike, and that continues at later points in the game as well

Tl;dr this is a good game for mindless grinding, but it’s not a musou and grinding means loading in and out of missions a bunch of times
