Previous thread: >>97215703GURPS is a modular, adaptable system, capable of running a wide range of characters, settings, and play styles, with a level of detail varying from lightweight to completely autistic.Optional rules allow you to emulate different genres with a single system, or even switch genres within a single game.A nearly complete archive of GURPS books can be found by using the image. Never post direct links to the archive anywhere in plain text.If you're wondering where to start:- The Basic Set covers everything, including a lot of optional rules you probably won't use.- A genre guide can be found in the archive, under Unofficial/GURPSgen. It tells you what extra books and articles you may find useful for many common genres.- How To Be a GURPS GM is a good read even for players.- GCS (gurpscharactersheet.com) is an excellent character-builder software, with page references to all the books and the option to export to both Foundry and Fantasy Grounds.Thread question: What are some systems or you would like to include or see included in a campaign, but haven't been able to? They don't have to be the main focus of the game, having them only as something on the side is okay.
I'm kind of shocked the Gun Fu book still has that classic faux Chinese font. Wouldn't people on the left consider it very racist, despite the fact that it isn't?
For anyone that's played both GURPS and one of the 40k RPGs (Dark Heresy 2E, Only War, Rogue Trader, etc.) can anyone compare the two games? I've been trying to get my group into GURPS, but after some months of playing, I feel like I'm the only one who actually likes the system. My game will be ending in a couple of sessions more. After that, one of my players is going to start GM'ing for the first time, and he's invited me to his upcoming game. He's going to be running someone else's DH2E homebrew called "Sector X", set in the world of Girls' Frontline. Though I'm interested in the setting, I've looked through the rules for DH2E and Sector X and I'm rather unimpressed. There are a lot of rules that are lacking, to the point that he's had to ask me for advice when adjudicating things the book doesn't cover (like using non-abstract currencies or creating custom roles/backgrounds/homeworlds). I especially want to kill whoever came up with the idea of Aptitudes. It feels like such a huge step down from GURPS. But maybe it's not that bad in actual play. Does anyone have experience?
>>97342362I've played a variety of the FFG RPGS before. I don't care for them mechanically, mostly because of the d100 system. In GURPS, a person with a competent level of skill has about a 75% chance of succeeding a task, in FFG games that's 30-40%, unless you constantly are fishing for bonuses. The rules, like most non-GURPS rpgs, tend to collapse in on themselves the further you go from the core mechanics and gameplay, which makes homebrew always a risky proposition, as you've already seen for yourself. I also would say that if you are intending to run a game with tactical combat you should really do GURPS.Basically yes, its as bad as it looks. I love the FFG games but as games they aren't amazing, its the quality of the rulebooks and amazing theming that makes them fun, not the core d100 mechanics.
>>97342362I played only war back in the day.It is a huge step down from GURPS, while also being just as complex if not more in play. I can't imagine someone going from a gurps campaign to a 40k rpg and thinking it's gonna be an improvement.Everything you can do in only war you can do in gurps, but easier, better, and with deeper gameplay.
>>97342456>>97342465Ah, then it looks like I'm in for a rough one. Thanks for the responses, anons.

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere. And as we enter this happiest and newest of years, remember: 2e was never an old-school game, bait is for reporting, and fish is for smoking! Happy new year, grogs!Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency. If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. >>97342028For a guy who thinks his games are "real", you have a weird thing of not realizing who's doing the "real" dick slurping.Waxing poetically about sandbox play and calling it exclusively Gygaxian while you have your own dick in your mouth isn't a good look bruh.
>>97342014There's a list in DM's n00b guide in the OP.
>>97342006>>97342138Only semi-related, but I actually get a bit concerned about people who try to describe their games as "real" or "more real."Rushing right past any delusions or questions of sanity, I'm actually concerned about outdated design concepts such as GDS/GNS theory, and almost always it's just someone who is just taking everything from a heavily "Simulationist" approach. Its very easy to focus exclusively on only the positives of one of the three legs of the stool while only focusing on the negatives of the other two, which is largely why most internet arguments over GNS devolved into flame wars between people arguing which leg is the most superiorest ever, all while they sat on heavily slanted stools.
>>97342299>If you desire verisimilitude you're mentally ill, am winnerAlright retard, back to the naughty corner with you and take your paste bucket with you.Clearly you can't be trusted to play nice with other people yet.
>>97342390Verisimilitude is good, but you don't get that with just a purely "Simulationist" approach. You even agree, considering you play some sort of D&D, and the D&Ds, in general all tend to skew towards Gamist when all RPGs are weighed. So, it's hardly even worth arguing with you over whether Simulationist-gamist is somehow supposed to be inherently superior over Narrativist-gamist (especially since the arguments over superiority are always idiotic). But, this is all using a model that is essentially two decades out of date, which is actually why I find people who subscribe to a "Simulationist" approach somewhat concerning. It sometimes feels like looking into another doctor's bag and seeing "Balancing the Four Humors" as their only reference.

What is the counterculture of 2020s, that could be used as the basis for a contemporary countercultural tabletop game?Take the World of Darkness for example, which was so grounded in the the counterculture of the 90s that it comes across as dated and strange today. It actually featured pretty heavily in a few games of mine. The last one was because they took over a large fortress town that historically controlled several smaller town.To get the nobles to agree to their leadership, they abolished income taxes (which had been 40%). And instated a 25% donation to a public works fund for all transactions guaranteed by the king (who was also a banker). These funds would be used for roads, hospitals, food banks, disaster recovery, etc. Any unused funds from the previous year would be refunded at the end of the current year. And then they had to negotiate taxes and import/export duties before the outlying towns would support them. Not what I planned, but was still a good time.

Its mainly a rule that I've found that people who have been playing for decades have never been aware that it exists and if you're encountering rules like that you need to ask yourself should it even exist in the first place? When it is applied it tends to have extremely minimal impact on gameplay as well so that's another factor against it existing.
