Rebellions in 40k usually happen on a single world, or within a very limited region, and are often isolated before they can spread.

In Star Wars, the rebels are far weaker than the Empire, but because hyperdrives are easy to obtain and relatively safe, they can carry out guerrilla tactics. By contrast, the Imperium in 40k doesn’t have a rebel problem as severe as the Galactic Empire did, because warp travel is terrible and can't really do it without a Navigator

so if the Imperium ever figures out a truly safe form of faster-than-light travel, it would face horrific rebel problems all across the galaxy.

I just remember really old lore suggesting it, back in the days when the Emperor was implied to be a disgusting mutant who crawled out of a DAOT lab.

>so if the Imperium ever figures out a truly safe form of faster-than-light travel, it would face horrific rebel problems all across the galaxy
...Why? I don't see the connection between the two.
>da emperor
99% of all humans in the imperium will never do any kind of FTL travel. Short of the FTL travel being zero cost teleportation, any kind of FTL would still be monopolized and controlled by the imperium, becauase they have all the money, resources and military might. Worship of the emperor wouldn't stop either, he would remain a god, he just wouldn't actually be doing anything.
> By contrast, the Imperium in 40k doesn’t have a rebel problem as severe as the Galactic Empire
Do the words "Horus Heresy" mean nothing to you?
>>
>>97347172
>..Why? I don't see the connection between the two
Rebellion in the Imperium is already common, Life on many Imperial worlds is brutal, but because civilians lack access to FTL travel, they have nowhere to run. Most uprisings are forced to rely on the resources of a single world when Imperial reinforcements arrive, which makes them relatively easy to contain and crush.

If safe, reliable, and widely available FTL travel existed, rebels wouldn’t just be able to escape but be able to link up with resistance movements on other worlds. That turns isolated revolts into coordinated, multi-system rebellions.

>Do the words "Horus Heresy" mean nothing to you?

I mean Imperium in 40k

Hey there

I've decided to start a West Marches-style campaign on my LGS. It sounds the perfect style to run for a public setting w/ rotating players, but I myself have never DMed one

Any experiences, tips and advices regarding DM-ing/playing West Marches style games?

Or general tips for running games on LGS ?

For those unfamiliar with West Marches style, here is what google have to say about it:
>Player-Driven Exploration: Players decide where to go and what to explore, venturing into unknown territory from a safe starting town.
>Rotating Cast: A large pool of players participates, but different combinations of adventurers form parties for each session, preventing the need for a single regular group.
>Sandbox World: The world is a sandbox, with the map and plot emerging as players discover new locations and rumors, rather than being dictated by the GM.
>No Fixed Schedule: Sessions occur when players organize themselves, often on a voluntary basis.
>Low GM Prep: The Game Master (GM) focuses on creating a world and potential encounters, responding to player choices, rather than crafting complex plots.
>Self-Contained Sessions: Adventures are often designed to be resolved in a single session, with storylines evolving over time.

So, your proof is some sped-tier "logic" that basically denies that the creation of OD&D was possible? Look up the population of Lake Geneva in the 1970s, Anon. Gygax claimed that he DMed different groups 6-7 days a week in that town and that he ended up having so many different players that he had to get Rob Kuntz to co-DM the game with him to be able to handle all the interested players.

and i know someone will argue 'West Marches' is ackshyually some 3.5/4E ingenious concept from that one blog because... you rotate GMs! ...there's unknown hexes! zomg.

that's just called 'D&D'. that's how you should be playing, if you follow the game rules. read the Expert half of B/X even if that's not the edition you're running.

I skimmed through it but it seems to be simply another map generator. I don't see the point of those, since its effectively the same as me creating one of my own (or use an existing one from previous campaigns, which is something I traditionally do)

>there's unknown hexes!
Whatever West Marches was originally is of little to no importance - what matters is what we make of it. I don't think that WM needs to be about hexcrawl, but I want my campaign to be a hexcrawl, and the unknown hexes aspect of it is the BIG thing that's getting me hyped about it. Traditionally, as the DM, I will prepare stuff and then more passively watch players go through it - its fun, but I've done it dozens of times. By generating hexes on the run, I'm hoping to be part of the discovery and enjoy the thrill of it

I've tested my hex generation procedure (explained here >>97335816), made some tweaks, probably will test it again by myself a bit more before running the test session this Thursday

Time for the "You are playing it wrong" post
Inspired by the post at >>97340961

Only roll when failing has an impact on the characters, even if its just taking up time or using resources. If failing doesn't mean anything, use the Auto Success mechanic as a basic threshold (or assume eventually rolling a 20 over 20 checks).

When exploring in dungeons or the wilderness, remember that travel speed matters. Exploration rounds take 1 minute each and you move at 10 times your speed per round. If you are travelling at a fast speed you move one third more but take -5 on your Perception checks. If you are travelling at a slow pace it is at two thirds normal pace but this lets you roll stealth (yes two thirds, not half speed).

Every action taken in Exploration takes one minute, that includes picking the lock, looking in one 10 foot square, or trying to break down the door.

When making Skill checks during Exploration, you are expected to keep the same check unless circumstances change. This include stealth and tracking. Stealth is made against the PASSIVE perception check of anyone that may see them, and failing that means they are on alert, they dont know you are there until they actively look. Roll another Stealth check against their ACTIVE check. Also Passive Perception is a floor, if you roll lower than this you use passive as your active result. This is confirmed as intended.

Darkvision makes things black and white and Dim Light. Dim Light gives disadvantage on perception checks, giving you -5 on your passive check. Similarly Advantage gives +5.

Long Rests give back half of your total Hit Dice, not all of them. Short Rest Hit Dice spending lets you spend one at a time. Yes, an hour of attempted Long Rest counts as a Short Rest.

I only allow people who have DMed before to play in my games. I have heard that there is a DM shortage and in my magnificent evil I have chosen to hoard DMs so that other players will have nothing! Ahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!
>>
>>97347964
Continued

Social Rolls are not mind control and have a very clearly defined chart. The DC is determined by their attitude and what you are asking them to give up in exchange. Buying their favour or saying something particularly persuasive in line with their goals (they want diplomacy, you offer peace for instance) can temporarily increase the attitude, conversely saying something offensive will lower the atiitude. Attitude also impacts the most they will be willing to risk in helping you.

A Long Rest consists of 2 hours of Light Activity and up to just under an hour of Strenuous Activity (Walking fighting and casting a spell). You can have these split through out your 8 hour rest period, so yes this means during your long rest you can cast spells but if your total exertion time is over 1 hour, or 2 hours for light activity, you must start again.

A natural 20 and natural 1 does impact Skill rolls. If a check would succeed and you roll a 20, it is a greater success than normal. Failing and rolling a 1 gives a worse result. You may also opt for a success with a cost on checks that fail by 1 or 2 points.

Mob mechanics exist for swarms of small guys and mooks. Read them.

Creatures count as cover for ranged attacks.

The Difficulty chart goes from 5 to 30. RAW 30 is the highest difficulty any check that isn't opposed can be.

Battle Century and Mekton are the most "toolkit" systems, meant to be customized. If those don't fit your needs, you may be able to refluff and modify another game that has mechanics closer to what you need.

What about your setting makes it different? For example, are the mechs more primitive because the tech level is closer to the real world? And what kind of things do you want to have in the game, what level of crunch do you want?

Its easy to look at this character design and see advantages: wall climbing, presumably increased carrying weight on those legs, perception bonus from multiple legs, etc.

What would the downsides to a spider-taur be, ignoring for the moment any social ones? What would such a spider person actually be worse at than a human? The two that come to mind for me are "armor becomes a problem, making them squishy in a fight" and "have trouble fitting into small spaces". The former is significant, the latter mostly isn't. Spiders are actually really good at squeezing through cracks and stuff, so I imagine that a spider-taur will be able to get through a human sized doorway or hall just fine, even if they will look weird doing it.
>>
>>97344832
>Mass and metabolic demand
Approximately 18% of a person's weight is in their legs. Each of the spider-taur's legs might be a little thinner than a humans but having 8 of them is still going to add a significant amount to their overall bodyweight. That will result in a commensurate increase in their basal metabolic rate and therefore the amount of calories they require to survive.
>Walking efficiency
Walking on two legs is significantly more efficient than walking on four. I suspect the comparison becomes even more dramatic against eight.
>Packing efficiency
Good luck forming a shield wall or phalanx. Volley fire with bows or muskets is less effective when you're spread out too.
>Reach
Good luck defending your legs against someone to your side or your rear against someone behind you.
>>
>>97343404
both are fine
>>
>>97343404
Depends on the setting, the game, and your group.
>>
>>97346249
>That will result in a commensurate increase in their basal metabolic rate and therefore the amount of calories they require to survive.
Not if they run on arthropodal metabolic rates, though that would entail much greater susceptibility to wounds and inappropriate temperatures.

>Walking on two legs is significantly more efficient than walking on four. I suspect the comparison becomes even more dramatic against eight.
There's differences the joint arrangement makes for that make me think otherwise, at least as a trained marching-gait, as spider-legs are much easier to just barely raise above the ground then shift forward with speed. But it does cost them throwing ability, so they have to wait for slings for ranged parity (...which already don't work with tight formations)

>Good luck forming a shield wall or phalanx. Volley fire with bows or muskets is less effective when you're spread out too.
While depth of rank is compromised, width can be deceptively little if the legs can be pulled in enough and the leg arrangement braces better so depth isn't as necessary to resist a press. Definitely going to need bigger shields with commensurate upper body strength demands.

>Good luck defending your legs against someone to your side or your rear against someone behind you.
The exoskeleton gives a very obvious example for form-fitting full plate armoring of it, which in combination with the better footing means they're going to need more significantly outnumbered than simple area-coverage would imply when richly equipped. And formation fighting still works despite the lower packing efficiency.

In summary, they're almost certainly favorable for logistics at short distances and have a decent chance at longer ones, but take casualties more severely especially in the latter case. On the field, they're likely doing better in uneven terrain and in niches like the block-breaking zweihander units or skirmishing infantry, but need more costly equipment to support it.

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere. And as we enter this happiest and newest of years, remember: 2e was never an old-school game, bait is for reporting, and fish is for smoking! Happy new year, grogs!

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:

It has absolutely nothing to do with house rules and everything to do with the numerous glaring errors.
Having exactly zero XP is also very telling, because even if they were authentic, you've never once played with them, and if those are the only examples you have, then you've clearly never played at all.

I'm really curious, can you tell us about what house rules your DM was specifically using that are reflected on your sheets?

Twinlimb Crossbow
This rather heavy magical crossbow has dual limbs linked with gears. This allows the user to angle the weapon against two different targets. Pulling the trigger fires both quarrels simultaneously.

Same as it ever was I suppose.

- Help your fellow anons with advice

>TRY TO:
- Remember that this general is monitored by GWendolin and her lawyers
- Not make a new thread until old one dies
- Not encourage namefags, tripfags, fumefags and coomers
- Not spoonfeed
- Not war over Filament/Resin consoles
- Keep your model pics naked (no paint/undercoat only)

A boolean would be the proper way to do it; Combine just acts like the Group function in a paint program, say (freezes the part positions, but leaves any mesh intersections in place). You could potentially end up with voids just using Combine without fixing the model in post (Windows 3d builder works remarkably well).

Friend printed some stuff for me, but give to me with all the supports.
Is there an easier way beside slowly breaking every single connection point? Because I already broke some parts trying to remove the supports and everywhere I've look everyone seem to easily pull them away so I'm clearly missing something.

They are only really easy to pull away before their final curing.
A pair of clippers is probably your best bet

Not even bathing them in hot water?
Because this will be a bitch to remove.
Can't really complain much did it for free, but still. Mother fucker

Hot water can help yeah but its significantly easier to remove them while semi-cured out of the printer.
