After about 8 years since I last DM'ed a game, I've been asked to run a session.
Unfortunately my books - adnd, 2e, 3e, 3.5, 4e, and 5e are in storage two states away.
And i prefer physical copies. Thanks to critical role and the movie DND books have gone up in price which is weird.

Is it viable to run 4e in 2025? I don't remember hating it and I still remember some home rules to streamline combat to speed it up a touch.
Does anyone have suggestions for 1-3lvl adventures or campaign settings?

Which is something they changed in Essentials with several Classes being two Sources like Hunter and Skald. And it sucked because it was just a pointless label and they didn't actually inherit any of the loose unity that the original Classes within that Power Source had.

Seeker and Runepriest being bad had less to do with crowbarring them into Power Sources and more to do with them being a double ups on existing Roles within that Power Sources. They were just unnecessary when next to Cleric and Druid. And also missing their Power books. And for Seeker the devs being dipshits and thinking [W] is too strong since the only other weapon based Controller also sucks balls. They didn't get that no damage at all but action denial like Daze, Stun or Dominate is infinitely more helpful than d10+mod and Slows.

Seeker was just Arcane Archer except replace the word Arcane with Primal. It was the cool magic arrow spam class except its bad and you don't get the fantasy because you are dragging down your team. The 3e and 5e version of Arcane Archer sucks dick entirely because of your proposal. I want to shoot magic arrows all day. Not have 1 or 2 and then be a worse archer. Dragon's Dogma and the Wakfu franchise are like the only thing that gets this right.

I wouldn't be surprised if dual cards activate by some other condition than counter timing.
just because its savers I think people are thinking of marcus, but I think the more likely candidate for dual cards is burst mode's, having a card be both the regular and burst mode and having the burst mode part of the card activate upon some condition.
imagine a lvl 6/7 card that is like "when this digimon would leave the battle area, trash all sources and digivolve into burst mode" and there is a separate section with a burst mode when evo and effect and its like a last ditch instant evo.
obviously this is kind of a dumb example, but having them activate at counter timing, when a certain condition is fulfilled, or whatever, but it is on your opponents turn, potentially even having it be optional, definitely makes for some more interesting card design and is thematically appropriate.

chronicle is kind of a meme but it got a few busted cards so so its getting closer and closer to good
and its getting more support next set.

CS alpha stuff is just kind of bad and chronicle is better than it (at i'd say so)

IIRC cats depend much for hunting prowess on their mothers teaching them how to hunt.

Considering how little nowdays cats can hunt (well, at least comparing them to the absolute range-free cats of a century ago) I would assume what we're seeing is cultural degradation more than anything else. Even if a cat had a great grandmother huntress and now it can roam free, the generations that lost the arts of hunting would severely hurt its ability now.

On the spectrum of rubber forehead aliens to complete starfish aliens that are made out of silica and breathe methane, where are YOU specificially comfortable with. Does there come a point where an alien becomes too weird for you to "relate" to in order to include them in your games as playable races?

Personally I am fond of aliens that look plausibly like they could have evolved in a different world and have no distinguishable lineage to earth life, even if they share some superficial features.

I'm so sick of this "muh 4 limbs is most optimal" line of argument. Our number of limbs has NOTHING to do with some sort of biological optimum. Our number of limbs stems from our evolutionary history from how our bodies develop during the embryonic stage. If there was some sort of evolutionary pressure towards small limb counts we wouldn't see arthropods with limbs numbering from 6 all the way to over a thousand depending on the clade and the species.

The reason landbound vertabrates have 4 lims is because we evolved from a 4 limbed ancestors, and the way our bodies develop makes it very, very hard for extra limbs to be cleanly added to our form. That is because the bodysegments/tagma in chordates are heavily fused, including our limb producing segments, thus essentially in order to produce new limbs you'd need a series of mutations that solely duplicate the parts of the genome responsible for limb development, in a way that these extra limbs still cleanly connect and join the rest of the bodyplan.

In comparison, something like a centipede, whose bodyplan retains entirely unfused limb producing bodysegments, can just replicate those segments as they grow in size without any issues, as if they were just adding identical beads to a rosary string. Whereas for vertabrates, if we use similar comparison, the parts of our bodies from which our limbs grow out out, are all tangled up in the same body segments that also develop our internal organs and shit. Essentially, our torsos are a product of multiple bodysegments fusing together in our early evolutioary history, leading to the 4 limb configuration.
Same process is why insects have just 6 limbs, or why spiders have only 8 limbs and so on. Once body segment fusion happens it is very hard for evolution to untangle it.

This was one of the more interesting and amusing things in Interspecies Reviewers. Elves actually enjoyed being with humans, but only if they were older, like 50 or 80 years old. Older the better, usually. This was due to elves (and other magically inclined races) being able to immediately tell a person's mana, which apparently has a sort of taste to it.

This is inverted for humans, who are essentially "mana-blind". Cue many situations where the human reviewer goes after very old elves and has a good time, but everyone else is absolutely fucking disgusted by it because an old elf's mana is very gross.

You should ALWAYS cheese every encounter. If you EVER end up in a situation that even remotely resembles a fair fight, just run away and wait until you can rig the situation to your favor.

Use your fucking brain. Even if it is highly improbable for you to lose a given fight, statistically speaking, you'll still eventually croak if you keep taking those bets. Don't leave it up to chance. It's easier than you might think, you just need to use your noggin. It's not a video game. You can do whatever the fuck you want.

Just the other night my party ran into a melee monster in a narrow ass room that they for some reason decided to ram their dicks into until someone died. When I suggested that we retreat for a bit and lure it into the room with the big ass statues so we can all just climb them and shoot it to death, they looked at me like I just escaped from the looney bin. They all died of course.

Anon there will ALWAYS be someone relatively weaker or stronger. Thats an inescapable reality of both "this is a game that isnt perfectly balanced" and "there are multiple factions". Competitive games with far fewer moving parts (like starcraft) have weaker and stronger factions,CHESS has weaker and stronger factions/colors (white has a slight advantage iirc). Someone is going to be in the bottom 50% and thats fine.

"I spent money on this, therefore my army shouldnt be weaker than anything else" is stupid. Both because if ignores the reality of games and because it ignores the reality of "you may have built a bad army, who cares if you spent money on 100 marauders, its 100 marauders thats retarded".

TOW is not a perfectly balanced game, GW has never made perfectly balanced games. TOW has issues, it has overpowered and underpowered things and elements within armies which dont work as I believe they should. TOW is, for warhammer fantasy, very well balanced. With the exception of a handful of outliers the armies exist in a spectrum where they can meaningfully play each other and games are relatively balanced.

The only guild I recall are the Mnemoi. They're great, the heroes of Stygia, no wonder I can't recall any of the others.
I also recall the Artificers and Alchemists because I found it weird how some sources say the former fucked the latter over to get rid of their main rival but others say that the Artificers are staunch allies of the Alchemists. But then, those kinds of contradictions aren't uncommon in complicated politics.

They were asking how to run a game that is famous for having extremely simple mechanics for characters which is really just all about vibe and atmosphere and grimdank survival management. Or, in other words, they are extremely inexperienced with tabletop games and they need something incredibly incredibly simple to use because anything real might be too complicated and scare them off. Lite is there for that. It's literally designed specifically to introduce noobies to tabletop gaming. Which is why I mentioned it.

I think the primary issue with porting it over to paper and dice is specifically that you need to be able to rapidly determine which limb an attack hits, what resistance, if any, that limb has to the type of damage being dealt, and then what penalties the target takes from having that limb harmed. And you need to be able to do this dozens of times per combat, because most Kenshi fights are group v group, so you'd be keeping track of limb health, recovery rate, etc, for a large group of characters at a time.

Not impossible to do. Probably wouldn't even be hard to streamline things a bit more, but it would be a lot of bookkeeping.

Is it weird to play female characters in spooky games? Like with other more combat focused systems it's not as big of a deal since you're just smacking things more often, but does the (often) more RP-heavy nature of horror settings make playing the other gender more of a weird experience at the table? Assume we don't put on voices for our characters.

Honestly if you ask me it's probably easier to end with the stereotypical man with tits in heavy action games than in a "real" setting, if you can roleplay just a tiny bit. Horror starts up almost inevitably in a "real world" type of situation, which is good for characters if that's what you fear.

However, there a lot of horror and horror related tropes that are feminine-coded and you'd probably want to avoid those. Like the final girl in slasher movies or the vamp in hard-boiled novels. I'd say amusingly enough the RPG horror milieu isn't particulary prone to dwell on them, thanks to Lovecraft's almost asexuality or something, but anyway. Probably if the GM isn't riffing on Clive Barker and the other players don't want to fuck everything with a vagina you're good with a female professional, you're gonna have other priorities (like, you know, surviving). Just don't try to make her not!Buffy, if anything try to make her sensible if vulnerable (and probably older).
