On the spectrum of rubber forehead aliens to complete starfish aliens that are made out of silica and breathe methane, where are YOU specificially comfortable with. Does there come a point where an alien becomes too weird for you to "relate" to in order to include them in your games as playable races?

Personally I am fond of aliens that look plausibly like they could have evolved in a different world and have no distinguishable lineage to earth life, even if they share some superficial features.

In the idealized sense roleplaying at least, alien psychology should be some sort of speculative form of their temperament, behavior and ways of thinking etc the alien has, that both matches their background/lore/what sort of animal they evolved from, while also being undestandable to us humans to a degree that we can still sort of emulate that type of mindset, without just being human stuffed in a skinsuit of an ayylmao.

It was voted the 7th best Star Trek movie at the 2013 Las Vegas Star Trek convention. As far as I'm concerned, that canonizes it.

Since it came out between Insurrection and Nemesis it helps preserve the even good/odd bad thing for Trek movies, too.

1. Star Trek: the Slow Motion Picture
2. Star Trek II: The Wrath of KHAAAAAAN!
3. Star Trek III: The Best Bad One
4. Star Trek IV: Whale Thieves of the 23rd Century
5. Star Trek V: Wherein God Needs a Starship
6. Star Trek VI: The One With the Klingon that Quotes Shakespeare
7. Star Trek: The One with Both Captains
8. Star Trek: The One with the Borg
9. Star Trek: Space Luddites
10. Galaxy Quest: The Best Star Trek Movie Never Made

Okay but what does this look like? I feel like you almost have to have actor notes for the players on it, or mechanics that incentivize certain psychological aspects of the alien, like if you're a symbiotic alien and you get injured in a way that kills one of your integral symbionts that should probably have some status effect be it a berserk state (going by the halo hunter example) or some other kind of distress. And I have no idea what game system has mechanics for this, maybe exclude phase or transhuman GURPs does and I need to dig deeper into their rulebooks about it.

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:

People other than Wizards can do poor game design.
Knight is "what if fighter but worse in 9/10 situations" and is apparently a strict improvement on the Knight from the Gnomes Caracess Crawler.
Enchanter could be fun around mid levels but the one player I've had that used it greatly disliked it. And he was my best player who made use of henchmen before any of the other newbies and was making liberal use of flaming oil every combat. Lost him from the campaign for a number of in and out of world factors of which a shitty class was one.
>>
>>97243844
>>97244233
Yeah, Gavin is not good at class design. The Grimalkin's shapeshifting is also notably terrible; the flipping out invisible panic button form is strictly worse than almost any normal combatant, so the only benefit is you heal 2d6 (and then have to run away so you don't lose them again).

I made a one-page "dungeon" for DCC
It's more of a side quest, but feel free to tell me what you think.
It was originally written as a solo thief adventure, but it should work fine with 2 or 3 people as well.

Constantly
I probably play more female characters than male

>make the count
>its actually a 50/50

regardless, I consider writting my hobby and of course there are several types of stories that are told better or can only be told with a female character. I have no fucking clue why there's this attitude of "No dude, writting a female character must mean that YOU ARE A TRANNY WHO WANTS TO BE A WOMAN!"

what the fuck

>>97239575
One cool thing about fantasy games is you don't have to make realistic characters; you can make sexy women who fight and go on adventures, and who don't get pregnant or spread malicious gossip.
I like making female characters, because I like to see good-natured, altruistic women doing good deeds to make the world a better place. If I can't have that in real life, all the better to have it in my fantasy games.

There's only four specialists in the team: knife-ritualist, stalker-climber, bruiser, and harpoon-gunner. Out of these, the harpoon-gunner sucks the most; it does not shooting damage and the dragging ability is nothing-burgers. Second worst is the knife-ritualist because keeping one dude as support in an eight member melee team is like leaving a model at home.

The Bruiser is the very good one, the climber-stalker is also good but only outside of close quarters maps.

>>

Short answer is that it's generational.

Long answer is that back in the early 2000s, you could get Channel 4 for free as long as you had an antenna for your TV. Everyone was watching KidsWB, including a lot of inner-city black kids. As an inner-city black parent, you have the choices between buying pokemon shit to keep your kid out of trouble, buying yugioh shit to keep your kids out of trouble, or letting them roam the streets and potentially get wrapped up in gang shit.

So, black kids get into yugioh at a young age. Then they teach their younger siblings how to play the game. Then they reach unc status and teach their nieces and nephews how to play the game. And it gradually gets passed along through that. It helps a lot that the series is flooded with evil demons and sexy women, too.

This is 100% the reason I got into it

>>
question for the thread

If'n I wanted to attempt to make a gish style class for homebrewing, would you say that these are what is required? Assume point buy/standard array

>d8 hit die
>half caster for 5th level spells at most
>focus the spell list to transmutation and abj magic, little evoc and few illusion/enchantment
>simple weapons prof, one martial weapon prof
>light armor prof, subclass to get medium armor
>at least one extra attack

Optional that I've been thinking
>spell casting mod to bonus to hit on melee to ease the MAD (mostly so that pumping casting abilites doesn't force you into a caster and can still run up and do melee)
>bonus for making/using items with charges (wands, staffs, melee weapons with spells in them) IE, you use a wand of magic missile, you cast it at 1 level higher than the charge you actually used it at
>crib the bladesinger cantrip replacement for attack action
>>
>>97246119
imo don't even have them be a proper spellcaster.

give them the pertinent spells at appropriate levels, even out-of-band with levelled casters if you deem necessary, but without spell slots. instead, give them [Spell-casting Modifier] uses, recharging 1 use on short rest and all uses on long rest

>>
>>97245829
I'd appreciate it if you wouldn't do that. It's my old character from Shadowrun (and an attempt to make a Troll with as normal life as Sixth World allows.)
Mark Hollowstone (born Troll in the Troll family) in Coober Pedy, Australia in the mixed opal mining community of Dorfs, Humans and Trolls (Orks prefer seeking fortune in the big city and while Elves would gladly wear an opal brooc, they would never lower themselves to dig in the ground like some pleb.) Note for once there's a Troll with no housing issues (many live underground to avoid scorching +45 °C during the day if you're a Troll you just dig a bigger hole for yourself.) Between Outback correspondence courses and local Dwarf scholar (retired Steiger named Helmut Ironvein) the ever curious Mark learned how to read and write (quite a feat in Shadowrun).
Mark wanted to see a bit of the world, joined the army (officers appreciated someone who can read the list of supplies and other grunts appreciated there's someone who can carry supplies for the unit on one shoulder and a gatling on another), then after he served his time (honorable discharge) army gave him a scholarship in cryptozoology (except in Australia it's no longer crypto. Just zoology), Mark got BA (his work on Bunyips is widely cited) and now he's a one man expedition into the Australian Outback. (Except one Awakened dingo who's totally not Mark's pet, just always happens to be in the same place.)
And speaking of his body paint... during studies Mark took a trip to New Zealand to see tuatara (reptile that refuses to evolve for 240 million years) and visited a tattoo parlour. Maori tattooist touched Mark's rough skin and told him "dude, you need a chisel. My needle won't do anything." A bit dejected Mark told himself that since he's Australian he'll stick to Aboriginal body painting and it turned out that as long he's painted the cryptids, awakened animals and even local spirits are much less hostile and sometimes even outright friendly.

I've been trying to improve 15 Love, I tried a 'new and improved' version with my sister: Compared to the OG Rules, you now have a deck of card, and each player has 3 cards in their hand at all time: The number on the card determines how many squares you can toss the ball, and Aces can be used when you serve for a free point (literally getting an Ace in Tennis)

The F:AT people held a lot of disdain for the 'geek way back when.
The chief editor and writer Michael Barnes was certainly not publishing reviews there as he was repeatedly banned.
With their rebrand into There Will Be Games and a different editorial team, I havent followed if they now publish in both places.
Theel and Spacebiff I guess. I never read their reviews on BGG, only on their personal sites.
>>
>>97246130
I see. I'm the first to shit on the gulag, but tbqh it could be much worse. The forums are absolutely aweful for the most part, but having a consolidated database and place to get usermade player aids amd other files is great. As all sane people.(Should) do, I use the gulag 90% as a database and 10% to get answers for rules questions, and for that having a single site is pretty neat. Not upselling the gulag, just saying there's a good side to all of this as well.

Writing General: 'festive' edition

Welcome to /wg/, the thread for all /tg/ related writing. Whether you're plotting your campaign, trying to come up with a character backstory, or just trying to write some setting fluff, this is the place to post it. You don't even have a campaign, just an idea you want to develop? You're welcome here. While the rest of /tg/ is arguing over monstergirl mating and which way rivers are supposed to flow, we're here to help you turn your thoughts into an actual finished product.

As the successor to the Storythreads, we're also open to /tg/ related fanfiction (D&D, Warhammer, Battletech, whatever). In fact, if you've written any vaguely /tg/-related short stories, you can try them out here. We also have flash-fiction challenges from time to time.

A thread to talk about minis and games which fall between the cracks, or peoples' homebrew wargames.
The >>>/tg/hwg thread doesn't entertain fantasy (for good reason) and the other threads are locked to more specific games.

Hope everyone had a nice Christmas lads. Was going to do some Boxing Day hobby but haven't.

What did you all get? I didn't ask for much this year, my work colleague got me a nice little em4 Miniatures order and my family the Planet 28 rulebook I chucked on a recent Mammoth Miniatures order.

I want to paint the Space Rangers super quick whilst I'm off work

1/72 is 20mm shouldn't be too hard. Are you going historical or fantasy

Both, since in the end all I need to switch between these two is adding a few monsters and maybe wizard or two.

>Lord General of the Nordican 1225th/ defacto governor of Nordica II.
>For the last few years we've been abandoned by the wider Imperium to an ice world that very much resembles our home.
>In that time we've constructed the city of New Yur.
>A sprawling metropolis surrounded by a network of trenches visible from orbit dug by the kriegers and valhallans.
>We've also made more or less peace with the orks we were originally sent here to fight, and even made alliances with the ruinous powers, but those truces only last for one day a year.
>A day that is fast approaching.
>Candlemass brings peace, but also war to Nordica II every year without fail.
>This year however the orks have decided to convert the former colloseum constructed by khorne worshipers in the ruins of a space hulk that crashed here into an arena for a sport they're apparently calling "Blood Bowl."
>I will be attending the first of these games on Candlemass day, which is set to pit greenskins against some surviving khorne worshipers they've captured.
>Emperor willing this will be the beginning of true peace to our world.
>But knowing Candlemass that seams unlikely and I'll be waiting the whole time for some new threat to emerge.

>Be Sergeant Ivana Semenov, 74465th Valhallan, Recon company 32E
>Me and Natalya manage to make our way to the “parking lot”, only to see some Eldar steal our snowmobiles and drive them to a difference entrance to the arena at the other end of the building/crashed Space Hulk, crashing into multiple other vehicles along the way
>Knowing how fast and agile Eldar are, they probably could have gotten to that entrance faster just by running and jumping along the tops of the vehicles, unless they were deliberately trying to wreck our snowmobiles
>I suppose we may never find out
>Gunfights are now breaking out in the parking lot, mostly between off-duty Guardsmen and Greenskins, but then there are a few green flashes and Necrons start appearing as well and attacking both sides
>No way we will survive the gauntlet of haphazardly parked vehicles and firefights and get all the way over there, so instead we head to Valhallan Recon Taurox with the markings of our sister company
>There is a young couple inside dressed in a haphazard fashion who clearly decided to stay behind for some one on one recreation
>We try to get them to leave right away, but they insist on waiting for their comrades which I suppose is fair enough
>Miraculously, the other three soldiers join us not long after, and the driver takes us off road to avoid the firefight that will no doubt develop along the main road
>As we speed away into the night, we start getting vox transmissions that the city itself is under attack, mostly by a surprise invasion by an as of yet unidentified Chaos warband made up of Traitor Guard, but there are also reports of isolated skirmishes with Drukhari, “Slaaneshified Necron”, rogue Kriegers, and “horned daemons”, and it seems some of the fastest Ork vehicles have already reached the outskirts of the city and attacked the Chaos warband from behind
>A pretty typical Nordica II Candlemas then

>It sounds like the Krieger section of trenches has been breached, but the adjacent Felinid and Valhallan sections are rushing in to fill the gap

I would like to talk about the Chronicles of Darkness game line Deviant: The Renegades, or more specifically, one major upcoming supplement. Deviant was released in late 2021, and has had three additional sourcebooks since then. A new supplement, Black Vans, has been in playtesting for a while, and is currently being previewed.

I am not being paid or sponsored to promote this book in any way. I am just very fascinated by it, and indeed, I already ran a mini-campaign using the playtest material.

Deviant is, by default, a game about playing angsty, scarred superheroes who either fight world-manipulating conspiracies or work for them. Black Vans is a toolkit full of variant rules, quick NPC creation, variant character types, and variant genres. These variants range from the minor to the dramatic, completely overhauling what were once non-negotiable, foundational themes and mechanics. Maybe your character is not angsty or scarred at all, perhaps they are a """""regular human""""" like John Wick or Batman, or the campaign might have nothing to do with world-manipulating conspiracies.

These variant genres include cyberpunk, high fantasy, post-apocalypse, space opera, and superhero emergence.

This is a beefy supplement. For example, one chapter alone dedicates 38,000+ words to playing other monsters of the Chronicles of Darkness: Beasts, changelings, demons, Sin-Eaters, hunters (entirely separate from the variant rules for """natural""" superpowers), mages, mummies, Prometheans, vampires, and werewolves. No additional supplements beyond Deviant are necessary; the rules are self-contained, allowing the group to play a monster mash of an urban fantasy setting without needing a daunting 7+ books. And yes, they are supposed to be balanced against one another, so a vampire in the same group as a full-fledged mage is probably some older Kindred.

I (and many others) shit on Edna/2hu pretty regularly, but they're one of the few bona fide yesgames let on /tg/ who cares about the games they like enough to post multipage autistic breakdowns of the parts of them they like the most. They're wasted on /tg/, and they're wasted on reddit, too.

/tg/ as it is now, at least

>it's a decent if a light on world building
It is supposed to be a toolkit RPG that expects the ST to do the work of fleshing out the Web of Pain. Even then, the core rulebook alone details four cities, each with their own conspiracies that make up a segment of the Web of Pain.

Eric Zawadzki is currently writing Deep Dive, a supplement that fully fleshes out 40 conspiracies from Standing 1 to 10. It also has a full-on sample Web of Pain for STs who want something ready-to-go, spanning dozens of conspiracies.

Thank you.

>>97226424
Any details on the first one? Does it still interact with the instability system?
>>
>>97244627

It is just a matter of straight-up swapping Conviction and Loyalty for Virtue, Vice, and three Aspirations. There are some guidelines for making it mesh with Deviant a little better. Yes, they grant Beats and Willpower and heal instabilities.
