Trench Crusade General - /trench/
Weird love Edition

>What is Trench Crusade?
An alternate weird history 28mm/32mm tabletop skirmish game still in a pre-release playtesting phase but with the full release slated for this year. Based on the art and lore of Mike Franchina, whose illustrations you may have seen floating around on /tg/ for a several years now, and designed by Tuomas Pirinen, one of the original creators of Mordheim. It's grimdark, it's visceral, it's awesome, and it's very Blanchitsu.

>What Trench Crusade is not
TC not an excuse for you to discuss IRL religion, history that didn't occur in the game, culture war shit, or discord bullshit on /tg/. Keep it on topic.

>What's the QRD on the background?
The Knights Templar turned heretic and opened the Gates of Hell when they took Jerusalem during the First Crusade. Over 800 years later the war is still ongoing as technology has developed to a pseudo diesel-punk WW1 standard and a third of Humanity has sided with the Infernal Princes.

>How do I get started?
All the files are free online, but are split between the website and the discord. They have all been collected here for your convenience:

Is Wayne Barlow still kicking? Would be nice if they had him make some art for the setting as he already did so much incredible stuff for his Hell series. Seems a lot of the Trench Crusade are borrows from him already

Yeah I sort of feel the same, looking at the rules, no practical experience though. I have theorized she might do well cost effective wize against hard targets when fireteamed with something else that can knock em down and have her ignore armour and clown on them.

The flaw in this plan is kinda the fact that she still rocks zero +dice to hit meaning she's nothing special there, -but- if her fireteam friend can dunk something down she can use markers for it, given she gets +D to injure non-demonic/grail units that is certainly not nothing. But also shits the bed when the court comes rolling with their big dick monsters. But again, HL are popular and war wolves very common, mech infantry as well, anchorites or just whatever that is well protected.

That's just my thoughts on the matter, she would come in cheaper than a heavy mech base, even more so when accounting for equipment. So with something that can bonk something down in melee, I think she might do ok.

Which is best:
>Vampires are weak to crosses
>Vampires are weak to any holy symbol
>Vampires are not weak to holy stuff
>Vampires are repelled by perpendicular lines, which crosses happen to look like

Thoughts? How many decks would actually care about this?
>>
>>96480973
theres really no point
part of the problem is that I was testing it with proxies and the list I have online is pretty different than the list I settled on.
I have a hard time keeping lists up to date, I just feel like its a lot of work to keep a deck in paper, change stuff out in paper, then look to see what cards are missing between the two lists and go card by card until both lists are the same
maybe I am doing things super inefficiently idk.

All of Red's draw is cast from exile effects so basically every red deck can benefit.

Why are some people so afraid to run games?
I bought a beginners box for Star Wars: Edge of the Empire, on a whim when I was visiting a comic shop around 2012 or 2013 and had my first ttrpg Experience the following weekend as a GM.
Since then, my players and I had a great time and most of them started running games on their own.
So why the fuck do I see so many idiots online, mystifying the job of a GM? It should be easier than ever to run games today (yes even online three out of four games are totally fine, if you filter out the obvious morons).

I believe that if you have the right mindset GMing isn't hard, but it isn't easy enough that everyone will have fun with zero effort. I try to put in the effort each session and I pay attention to areas where I could improve or things to steal from other sources and so on. The DM crisis 5e bullshit is retarded, but there are tons of half assed GMs that should try more.

You need to identify what's stopping you from just doing it. Sit down in silence and think about the think you want, imagine how other people do it, and what you'd need to do to get there. And then ask yourself what's stopping you.
I'm assuming it's not a material barrier, like wanting to play piano but not having money for a piano or classes. You won't be able to face the anxiety or fear that stops you from trying until you recognize you have those feelings. You have to name your demons and stuff. Some people need therapy to do this because they blocked their own feelings so hard their brain got reworked and ignores shit they don't like as if it wasn't there. Crazy stuff.
>>
>>96478420
kinda this

I've had players that were actively sabotaging my attempts at GMing. And I'm not talking problem players or newfags being hard to control, I'm thinking of the regular GM actively making everything harder and then complaining to me that I did an awful job. Kinda abusive in retrospective, but my opinion of the dude was mixed with the general joy of getting into the hobby so it took some time to understand he was being a piece of shit and not that I was too retarded to finish a one shot.

Some people are just rat-fucking cat-turd collecting gigantic pieces of miserable shit from outer-nigger-space. It has generally been my experience that fellow GMs are overwhelmingly good players. They are happy to bite plot hooks, they know how to contribute, and many will even read the goddamn rules. You got very unlucky, but I hope you stuck to it nevertheless.

Go to another game store? Alternatively you could just host games at your home with the players you like.

They also mostly keep their distance, but since we usually play at the store and both the tranny and the two autists are dumping insane amounts of cash on new models every week there is no chance the owner will kick them out.
>>96480922
Already started doing my private games at a friends place, but he doesnt want to host every time and I dont have the space for more people
>>
>>96480895
You could try talking to them and explaining that you like your personal space. I would expect autists to understand that point.

Hey, Anons, I'm the creator of the latest "unplayable" cyoa. Full adventure: https://www.imgchest.com/p/lqyemdxdx7d

I need feedback on the companions. Specifically on those that are bad and I should throw them out, and suggestions for companions to add (bc I just writing in random ideas and I feel like I missed some must-have archetypes).

>>
>>96480073
I honestly didn't care about companions much (and was proven 100% right while playing through it, can't kill all the companions if you don't have companions). I was extremely confused at the realm/quest structure however. What you should've done IMO:
1. There shouldn't have been any starting stat divergence between isekai/realm start, it's just needless math and CYOA forces you to look back at options you selected and subtract your class stat bonuses if you selected isekai, for example. Should've been just linear addition with every option giving you +n to stat so you could select isekai and a class and a realm or whatever.
2. Claimed realm starts should've been expanded and broken into several choices instead of being a single choice. Because I for the love of me couldn't comprehend how many conquest quests I should've gone through one after the other, depending on which realm I was in. I think I went through 3 including conquering the orcs, and reading the same page 3 times in a row is not that fun. Perhaps you should've just listed the realms and fluff for them so instead of the general "claimed realm" you could start in the Empire, Union etc., then made conquest quests exclusive to the realm in question. That would've required more work but at least you could actually play through the CYOA without gettin an aneurism.
3. The whole premise of being cursed for who the fuck knows what adds nothing to the multiversal war storyline except building resentment in the player (as we find out later, it's actually the multiverse's spite or whatnot so it's even worse because it's not even your fault you get royally fucked). I also didn't find any option to turn yourself into undead or something similar (dragging your soul to the phylactery when you turn to dust might've been one way to try to cheat it) despite Dark mentioning creating undead. I was banking on that and selected soul + dark but it turned out to be a nothingburger.
>>
>>96480872
Hmm... Adding more undead options is a good idea. I've overlooked that.

Probably but an important thing that a lot of people miss about the industrial revolution is that a big part of it was plant and animal breeding improvements that allowed for more food from fewer farmers. And even if you go out of your way to set that up earlier it still took a couple hundred years to get there.
>>
>>96480983
Entirely feasible if you have the means to accelerate development while not getting forced into a lull/dark age as you roll out the new tech, but you'll probably be spending a few decades on just rolling out the tech to build the next tech rollout unless you cheat your way past a few iterations.
>>
>>96480959
>It is. It'd be a shame to just let it be lost for a modern aesthetic eventually if technology develops.
Exactly. You can’t let style be lost in the march of progress.
>>
>>96480983
If you took it as jump one and don't have a lot of specific expertise? Probably not. It'd pretty much only be possible if you'd spent a good part of your life preparing for it.
>>
>>96480983
It’s possible, but you’ll want perks from other jumps to make it probable.

The thread to talk about Super Heroes/Villains/Spies/Agents/Rogues be it in spandex or not.

Popular Choices for Games:

>Mutants & Masterminds
Currently the most played one, uses a d20 resolution for everything, has powers building and rules for tactical combat.

>Marvel TSR/ FASERIP
Classic Supers game from the 80s, still has a lot of fans and various retro-clones. Uses a d100 with an universal resolution table to decide the degree of success, has random character generation and abstract rules for powers and combat.

>Masks (PbtA)
Rules light game with focus on narrative. Less rules reading more making stuff up on the moment. Game is built on the concept of playing as young heroes but you can use it for more mature settings.

>Why are Cape threads pretty consistently some of the worst threads on /tg/? Why are they so prone to spamming and other assorted off-topic foolishness?
Several factors coming together to make things suck. The real reason is nu /tg/ doesn't play games anymore, so they fill their time with surrogate activities that let them be a part of the hobby tangentially without actually getting a group together and playing the damn thing. A particularly popular surrogate activity is arguing over systems. This type of anon will beat their chest to show you that their system is better or show you that other games suck which ever they are feeling at the moment. They do this because that's what they think a "real" grognard would do and looking like you play games is the most important thing to people who don't actually play.

Surprisingly, I have never had that happen. However, the bottles with ball bearings in them often have a detachable nozzle (presumably to get the bearing into them), and if paint has dried in the nozzle and you squeeze too hard... - you can guess what happens next. :P

I've only tried quickgen of all the contrast brands so I can't make many comparisons but I can say they have a smell that persists in a wet palette until you fully wash it out, even if no paint gets in the water and the paper was changed. It's really odd. Slightly blackcurranty..Supposedly have the longest working time of all the brands.

Turns out I don't like how contrast looks so I'm going to struggle to get much use out of them. White Shadow has worked to cover up some fuck ups painting whites. Night Black looks like cheap ink has spilled.

Look up Juan Hidalgo's plasma videos on youtube, that's basically what he does with a little white ink applied at the end.

Why do people still think 4E and 5E are D&D?
Protip:They're not. They never were and never will be.

Forgotten Realms was shit and deserved to get butchered.

They should just pirate them. While its nice to have them, pirate first, then if you like it enough, then you can spend money.
And the game will function perfectly fine with the PHB, DMG, and MM 1, but its a whole lot more fun with the rest of them.

In addition to >>96479087's counter-argument, the issues with Essentials in the broader 4e context were two years into the run and was clearly defined as a separate product line (which could have resulted in a new BECMI/Advanced division if the new managers didn't promptly bury previously-advertised 4e products), versus the issues of accreting bespoke rules can be seen in the damned core rulebooks for OD&D and earliest issues of Dragon dedicating page-space to basic operational advice to cover for the books' lack of overarching structure.

PHB1 & 2
DMG 1. Maybe 2.
Rule's Compendium
Monster Manual 3 and Monster Vault.
Adventurer's Vault 1

Past this it's up to your own personal desires to fill in specific things otherwise. Though you got the online database and offline character builder to fill things in too. There's also picrel, which makes running older monster content like MM1 and 2 easier to wing.

Don't listen tot he hate, Anon. 4e is probably one of the more fun editions out there, despite the small list of actual warts. Just understand that it does set piece encounters better than random encounters and you and your table should have a fine time.

Dogshit advice. Mm1 has literally broken math. Use monster vault and the conversion card for monster manual 3. The math for skill checks are also broken in this shitty fucking system. That being said I’ve never player an edition with combat as enjoyable for players and the DM. It works super well for dungeon crawls but not for the kind of wishy washy 1 encounter a day bullshit 5e sometimes devolves into.
