As most other have pointed out, there's a dedicated general for the format because it's very detached from the rest of the game as it's basically a party game and a reason for people to socialize rather than play magic. I also wouldn't recommend it as the entry point but it sounds like that's all your friends are going to play so whatever.
Most people get thrown the krenko deck to start because it's beyond braindead easy and considering you play stuff like PTCG and HS that sounds about your speed. Get your feet wet with it but don't become too attatched to it as you'll likely get bored of it fairly quickly.

There are missions sometimes, but they are more like prompts for the imagination rather than something structured and you can just ignore them and do your own thing. Once again, some do have structure, like the aforememtioned Life Chronicles, but most are very open.
This general is based much more on the open ones, mechanical ones don't really work with our MO. The current runs here are the ones posted at the start of the thread, they have all the compiled information on other PCs and the stories/content up to now. You can just pick one, make a character, post it, and then start writing for it or discussing it in thread. The other general is about the same, but they don't write stories about the characters and they are all separate, they don't interact. There have been a couple of exceptions but it's not how it's supposed to work and even those were not really the same thing as here.

It's also active. And it's not sartre'd that much. The mechanics, as little of them as there are, were not changed much, it's only the setting that has been changed to remove the more degenerate aspects of the original. It's a very freeform cyoa by nature, it's supposed to be like that.

I've had a really weird introduction to this game. I'll blog post to share that with you:

My Brother and I use to go to Sci Fi conventions all the time together, usually joined by a few friends as well. One day we're walking around in the dealers' room and we spot some Star Trek card packs on sale. Dude goes "Yeah man, good fookin game, you should play it." We said we didn't know how but it would be nice to learn. Vendor knows of a buddy who's actually running a game event in the mezzanine level; so he tells us to buy some starters, buy a few packs, meet him there. We oblige and scurry off to go get taught the game. My Bro has a hardon for the Enterprise E and he fucking pulls it in his packs. So he builds his entire deck around that, and it was disgusting because it's basically Trek's Charizard. I got the DS9 starter deck and when I opened my packs I got Rom as one of my best cards; it was an abstract kinda feel but I realized he had potential. The event was pretty short, it was mostly a teaching lesson and the guy watched us build our decks and play a game of it and then packed up to leave.

When we went home I started getting into it hard core, me and my Bro's friend went out and bought new starters. He wanted a Romulons deck, I wanted Klingons. The matches were so fucking hilarious because each deck is basically playing keepaway and footsy with themselves. Eventually his Romulons deck got so degenerate to play against I had to switch tactics, and that's when the Borg set was newly dropping. I fuckin' loved playing it with that guy, but my brother refused to evolve his deck from that day we all learned off of starters, and he would lose, and then say "forget this" and go play dead or alive beach volley ball while me and his friend assembled killer awayteams. Fun fucking game, they captured the theme of Star Trek quite well, but it always felt like you had to play to a specific timeframe and theme and it was kinda never worth mixing decks together.

My brother's married and he comes over to learn games (usually at starter deck levels) to this day, but he's just so low commitment we never get to see real constructed battles of anything. I admire the fact he's a good sport about learning whatever game I'm playing though. Some things never change, eh?

Do I play that game anymore? No, but I thought about surprising my brother with a new star trek deck and trying to get him back into it. The game plays really well, I can't remember what the flaws were because it's been decades since that story time. Maybe one day I'll build two really good construction decks and we'll have a go, for old time's sake.

Presently he's the same bro that bought me Gothic starters for the holidays, so I'll be teaching him that next. He's in for a real treat with that one, I reckon. The Doom decks have some nice teeth to em, unlike the older ones.

As for DOA BVB, we use to legitimately play it for the mechanics. When my Bro first rented it from Block Buster me and my freind pulled an all nighter taking turns with him, playing the mini games and getting some sick volleys in. Great times. Miss the simpler days, as I'm sure others can relate.

The battletech look is a bunch of boxes and cylinders arranged into vaguely humanoid or chiken shape and strapping a bunch of guns on them. I don't even dislike the look because I like battletech (Timberwolf my beloved), I just am very, very confused over why you insist anything in BT looks even remotely elegant. The entire point of the battletech look, at least these days is making the mechs look like militarized industrial machines with legs.

Anon gave you a great answer, but as an alternative suggestion, consider not prepping your own map at all and using one of the Wilderlands of High Fantasy maps. They're a little bit harder to read than the colorful Basic-style maps, but the playability is unmatched, and if you want to expand the area of play there are lots more maps ready to hand. You can just plonk your dungeon down in any hex that seems reasonable. Alternatively there are also various remakes of the original Outdoor Survival map that was recommended for use in the original D&D box set from 1974; pic related is one. I hope you enjoy it, Anon!

Welcome, friend. You seem to have a good measure of "the spirit of the game" and I'm sure you'll have a great campaign going forward. Others gave you fantastic advice. GFC is an absolute treasure as is Melan (the Beyond Fomalhaut fellow linked above). I'd also recommend Prince of Nothing's Age of Dusk blog, though he primarily does module reviews. His musings are good stuff, though, and his No Artpunk module contest collections are rock solid. I would also urge you to poke around old articles from magazines like Fight On! and Dragon. Lots of stuff to shamelessly steal for your games in there.
As someone who converted his group from PF and 5E to AD&D, I feel it's crucial to set the hook early. I don't mean in a storygame way, mind you, but give them something they want to get done. A solid dungeon that they can't reasonably finish in a handful of sessions, but with the promise of more treasure if they push on. Something like that. Obviously you have a better measure of your players than we do, but if you are enjoying the OSR style then you'll have to convince your group, through gameplay, that it should be your primary game after the first few sessions. You could run one of the established classics like Keep on the Borderlands or what have you. Or you could mess around with Appendix A from the DMG and roll your own dungeon. If you go that route, I recommend being a bit malleable with some of the interpretations of the results. It's a great way to start getting a dungeon hammered out, but don't be beholden to what it creates. Use the results for inspiration and guidance, but get creative with it! GFC has a great video regarding traps that shows a great method for making your own.

As far as making a setting goes, I recommend not fleshing out everything before you start. Give yourself an aesthetic you're aiming for (mine is "somewhere between Tolkien and Conan by way of Frazetta"), decide what sort of biome you want to start the players in (frozen north, deep woods, coastal region etc.) and hammer out the rough shape. At least one major city if appropriate, maybe some hamlets and villages, key landmarks. Then establish some basic stuff regarding political things like rulership and antagonizing forces. I feel that things move much more smoothly if you just let things develop organically though you may prefer a more rigid method. Beyond that, just go for it! Sit down and start putting stuff to paper. I'm sure you'll have something great shaping up before you know it.

Also, I second Wilderlands of High Fantasy. The booklet can be a bit difficult to parse but it's fantastic for stocking hexmaps.

Every Iron Hand is hard to kill, and their special terminators even more so. But for the Death Guard, it's just a specific unit and their characters, innit? They are great, but I sometimes wonder how it relates back at to the spirit of the fluff and rules we were presented since HH1.
The Death Guard is a great legion, to be sure. But they seem better at jogging that at being hardy idk. Like, Phraetus also are EW and Gal Vorbak are 3W but we don't call the Word Bearers a resilience legion
