Would love to share some YTers I like to use for inspiration. Looking for anyone you find helpful. Preferably smaller creators and not restricted to 5e. I’ll submit three that I really enjoy while I’m doing prepFirst I’ll submit is Desk and Dorks. The channel is made by a medieval historian and combines his knowledge of subjects to enhance games. I particularly like his take on Bronze Age fantasy and building better town guards
>>97225250My second pick is a guy named RPG PhD. He’s a theater professor, I think, who incorporates a lot of the techniques and lessons learned from performance into making RPGs better.I like his discussion on how to use Chekhov technique to generate payoff and curiosity loops to keep players hooked on your ideas
>>97225265The third submission is Bandits Keep. It’s a distinctly OSR-themed channel where Daniel spends a considerable amount of time explaining some older styles of play that I’ve found very valuable.Any that you all enjoy?
>>97225250Daddy Rolled a 1 is pretty good
>>97225250I skimmed through and watched a couple of videos from your first recommendation: he's a fart sniffing redditor that doesn't even know how to make the fucking ampersand character in d&d. Thanks for wasting my time i guess, i'm safely assuming that the other suggestions are on the same level so i won't even try.
>>97226804NTA. Bandits Keep has good advice for OSR-styled games, some of it might apply to other games. Daddy Rolled a 1 is almost entirely a D&D historical channel, the one upside is he doesn't villainize the creators of the game.

>>97179249Do we really need anything more than that? Most people are going to use either the Gold Box, From the Ashes, or The Adventure Begins Gazeteers for Greyhawk anyway, completely throwing out the 5.5e blurb.Greyhawk isn't like other settings. It's canon outside of official sources like the gazetteers, modules, or novels is meant to be purely homebrewed. If you want any further canon, check places like canonfire as other Anons said, the lore is mainly community made.Or you could just make shit up as you go along at your table. It's meant to be a worldbuilding framework. Worldbuilding on training wheels if you will, Gary didn't even want to publish it as a setting, he wanted people to make up their own. Which is kind of what every GM that plays in Greyhawk does.I had a friend ask me today if Greyhawk was a grimdark setting. Now, at my table it's not, I prefer the nobledark approach, but there's no doubt someone who plays a grimdark Greyhawk in the From The Ashes era.

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency. If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Have you tried Space Gits? It's an unusual skirmish game by Mike Hutchinson (made Gaslands). It seems to be the ultimate casual skirmish that you play while chugging beer.A lot of mechanics are dexterity based, for example instead of losing health or wounds, your fighters add D6's to their dice tower, which has to be moved alongside them (and when it drops over, they drop down). Shooting is also quirky - you roll dice equal to the number of shots and then trace lines between a shooter and each die to see if you hit the target. Landed shots use die's result, so a single roll is made to-hit and to-wound, which I think is neat.I'm going to try it this thursday. My only two complaints so far is that close combat seems bland (its basically rock-paper-scissors) and it's really easy to deny it by spamming shove. My other complaint is that the rulebook's art is atrocious vomit.Everything else checks out though, it even seem to have a basic campaign system.
i did try it (the demo pdf they gave for free)the thing is being dextrity based, can make it really inbalancedyou throw the dice to decide the shooting angle, but, of course, its not the same, throwing the dice 5 cm over the board than 15cm.it was okish to try, but i didnt really like it, you can cheese it a lot without even trying, if i get the full pdf i may read it out of curiosity, but i dont think i will play it againjust use painted miniatures and nice terrain, and at least you will have some nice visual apeal
>>97223299Depreciated, we only play Chitty Hexen Modelo, which is technically a hex and chit game, but the only commercially available box has miniatures and 99% of all players use them instead of the chits.
>>97223296>makes you sound like marketing.Sorry, this wasn't my intent. I just like the game's premise and I'm a huge fan of Gaslands and Mike's games, so I was excited to post it here. I agree that it potentially could get boring quick, so I want to try it IRL.I've watched 2 battlerepports on youtube, and it looked fun, although in both reports people kept messing up the rules. Also after re-reading the PDF I'm stunned that there isn't any clear instructions from how to actually do the dexterity involved stuff to avoid cheesing the system; for example, when moving a dice tower nothing in the book says that you cant use a second hand from holding it together as you move your tower. I'm going to agree on some restrictions with my opponent before the game.>>97224046I guess this counts, although this seems more like an attempt to save time from doing an extra roll. Looks cool though. Also holy fuck, the captcha is somehow even worse now.

Wanted to talk about advice on GMing, settings you prefer, and styles or issues you as a GM have. I generally tend to prefer dark fantasy or sci-fi settings rather than trying something a little different. I also tend to have a style, depends on the system though, where i have a combat heavy session or two and then a more intrigue/exploration focused session. I have been working on how to better balance games I run, but trying to tie that to timing a game session gets tricky at times. Another issue I noticed is that puzzle solving or investigative games can be a lot harder for a player to get into the mindset for than the dm. It is easy to think everything you planned makes sense when you thought it out in your head but the players might not have the same line of thought.
>>97218290Almost all the problems I see people have with RPGs are communication problems. Talk with your fucking players. Note that that means listening as well. Be clear what you expect from them, what you want the focus of the game to be, what sort of tone you want, and so on. Don't expect them to read your mind.
>>97219648The kobold guides and the lazy dungeon master guides are pretty bad in my opinion. The lazy dungeon master stuff started ok if a little basic, but then went into shit not even about the games.
GM advice thread?
>>97218290Be a Master of both paths my sonWorld path) take the OSR pill, as in internalizing the following truth:- be like an Arena Master and a Referee, not a Director. Your job is to throw the PC in the scenarios you engineered, to move the set pieces and react to your players decision accordingly, not to be an illusionist altering the threads behind your screen to force your predetermined and inescapable decisions on the pc;- keep the world around the pc moving, the osr specific tool here is to keep strict track of time in all dimensions. Just as for the microcosm of combat rounds use calendars for days (where to keep track in advance of weather, factions actions and events to be) and proceduralized turns for explorations;- be callous but just, learn to advertise and telegraph dangers but never shy away from them, instead of fixing mistakes in post (fudging dice, use failing forward and deus ex machina tricks) convey openly the risks beforehand leaving ALL the responsability weight on the players decisions alone, make their agency truly matter;- treat combat (and by extension all sorts of scenarios) as a war and not as a sport, make terrain matter, make features matter, make morale matter, make psychology matter, make any of the pc interaction matter. The players are traversing a real field, not a theme park with triggerable events and puppets;- focus on a (per adventure) narrow theme, ask yourself what your game will be about. Hunting monsters? Tomb raiding? Street gangs war? The more specific the better.[Part 1/2]
>>97228205[Part 2/2]Story path) take the Hickman manifesto pill as in internalize the following truth:- have the players engaging with the world on a deeper level than what the game focus presents. Ask them a poignant, short and relevant reason (that may be honest to themselves or not) for their characters motives;- there should be overachieving events in motion the effects of which should influence the characters microcosms (and their decisions influence these events back), have them tackle with this spontaneously unfolding narrative;- make the world have verisimilitude, don't just throw random dungeons and encounters in random locations but try to make sense of them within the context of the world, even in post if necessary. Make notations of these reasons to keep this internal consistency for yourself and not to explain the world to your players. Leave them to make head and tail of it by themselves but reasons should exist nevertheless;- overarching events should culminate within 1 or 2 game session tops in a satisfying manner (as in resolutive). Make extensive use of in media-res to initiate the game and keep the pacing snappy!
