Making them ugly is the only based choice. Even better if they are based on some undesireable or lesser known animal. My next game is going to include the ancient race of flying buttock worms who are in war with the Ramisyllis multicaudata folk.

You SAY that, and are then surprised when you get players that are into that shit!

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to TSR-era D&D, derived systems, and compatible content.

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons as played in the game's first decade — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching meta-plots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started.

I mean that's the sort of game I'm hoping to run. I'm roughly thinking the first few levels will be more pulp fantasy style hunting bandits lead by ambiguously magical sorcerer types, but as they explore further afield they'll find more genuinely magical shit. I'd love to hear a broad strokes overview of your game. Did you start gonzo or begin fairly grounded and work your way up to the martian stargate?
>>
Hypothetically, let's say you're running an open-table game for a bunch of strangers. A few groups go to location POI and discover stuff and clear some stuff. Later, a different group with players who have never before been to location POI head there too.

Do you as the GM tell the new group what previous groups have done/achieved/located?
>>
>>96458459

No, but I just update the state of the location when the first group runs it so the second group will enter the "aftermath" of the first group.

i.e. If the first group enters the goblin lair, kills all the goblins, piles all the bodies up and takes all the loot, then leaves, the second group will just find a lootless cave with nothing but a pile of dead goblins in it.

If they want to know who did it, why, and what they looted they'll have to figure it out based on what was left, not because they got an infodump at the front door.

Meanwhile, if it's been a week or so it's pretty likely something that likes dead goblin has moved in, a month later all the corpses will be picked clean and something will be hungry, and the cycle continues.

>For the emperor
>The emperor protects
How do 40k fans actually have the guts to spill out and larp about stuff like this when it's completely contradictory to what the setting stands for?
You aren't fighting for the emperor, he's a corpse, you're fighting for mcbureocrat shecklethief, goldlord eatsalot, royalfuck richbourbon and corruptatron 9000. The entire setting is not about humanity's fight but about humanity being fucked in the ass by a couple elites.
Pro imperium thought is genuinely a unfathomable concept to me aside from people projecting their personal political preferences to try and make the "fascist" (obviously not fascist) imperium fit their idea of mankind's noble last stand instead of shecklethief's feudal space fiefdom. It's ok if you're like "hell yeah this sucks that's retarded and awesome" but many people seem to think it's perfectly justifiable to fight for "mankind" while some nobles live in palaces made out of solid gold.
"But it's our only choice agains't xenos and chaos"
Well scrubbing off some of the luxury from the planetary governor's palace and giving it to the astra militarum regiments would surely help things a lot but no one seems to think there might be better ways to fight off agains't shit. That and the imperium perpetuates chaos, without it chaos wouldn't spread, 90% of all chaos followers are from imperial origin and their greatest princes are supersoldiers made by them

Trench Crusade General - /trench/
Weird love Edition

>What is Trench Crusade?
An alternate weird history 28mm/32mm tabletop skirmish game still in a pre-release playtesting phase but with the full release slated for this year. Based on the art and lore of Mike Franchina, whose illustrations you may have seen floating around on /tg/ for a several years now, and designed by Tuomas Pirinen, one of the original creators of Mordheim. It's grimdark, it's visceral, it's awesome, and it's very Blanchitsu.

>What Trench Crusade is not
TC not an excuse for you to discuss IRL religion, history that didn't occur in the game, culture war shit, or discord bullshit on /tg/. Keep it on topic.

>What's the QRD on the background?
The Knights Templar turned heretic and opened the Gates of Hell when they took Jerusalem during the First Crusade. Over 800 years later the war is still ongoing as technology has developed to a pseudo diesel-punk WW1 standard and a third of Humanity has sided with the Infernal Princes.

>How do I get started?
All the files are free online, but are split between the website and the discord. They have all been collected here for your convenience:

Maybe see if anyone is willing to try a demo. It's hard to get people to try new games when they've not had a chance to try it out, and harder to get people to invest in a new tabletop game

>Aiming for it to look metallic green on some spots and just straight chrome on others
Could end up looking very bland, since you'd have roughly the same brightness on everything. Contrasting brightnesses help a colour scheme, more than contrasting colours. A few bits that are brighter to pop could do such a scheme good.
>>
I broke the staff on my ventrilokar and super glue doesnt seem to be working. The piece itself looks too small to pin and I'm thinking of using green stuff but rather not since it will look weird. Any advice on different glue/techniques to use?
>>
>>96459465
you could try using tamiya acetone acetate (plastic cement/airbrush cleaner)
dont need a lot, clean off the glue and use like a brush stroke or two on each end start melting the plastic, set it up in a way you can leave it for a minute to let it set
>>
>>96459135
I'll probably do a bit of highlighting underneath the layer of contrast, ultimately I want a metallic green to go with the silver metal

Trying to hammer out a solid setting/headcanon for a unified Alien/Predator universe. Here's my take on what to keep , what to shitcan and what to add:

>Things to KEEP:
The Queen and the hive from Aliens. Gives the bugs a purpose beyond just being murder-insects.
Diverse Alein lifeforms (e.g., the T. Ocellus from the Alein Earth).
Gritty corporate dystopia. Weyland-Yutani is the real villain. "Truckers in space" aesthetic is mandatory.
The Engineer/Forerunner concept, but ONLY as a way to explain panspermia. It elegantly explains why so many species are biologically compatible (e.g., Facehuggers working on humans and Yautja). It also supports my favorite fan theory: the Yautja didn't invent their advanced technology; they inherited or reverse-engineered it. This explains how a tribal, honor-based society can also have plasma casters and FTL ships.

>Things to discard:
The AvP movie lore. Predators did not build pyramids on Earth.
The Human/Xenomorph Hybrid (looking at you, Newborn): This completely demystifies the Xenomorph for me. The horror of the Alien is its otherness. It's already the ultimate killer because it takes traits from its host—it's already optimized to hunt us. Making it more human just makes it less scary.
The "Magic" Black Goo: As it stands in the prequel films, the goo is a narrative crutch. It can create, it can destroy, it can mutate... it can do whatever the plot needs. I'd either discard it entirely or give it hard, consistent rules.

>Things to ADD:
More alien life in general. The galaxy feels way too empty with just humans, Xenos, and Preds.

which game was it where the Alien campaign has you play as Six.
>creepy doctor researching live alien subjects (and all that this implies)
>burn the number 6 into PC Alien's forehead
>break out of xenojail
>stealth through vents
>french kiss people through their brain stems
>kill the creepy doctor
>escape and become a queen morph

I don't know or care about the lore as established, comics or movies or otherwise, I like the idea that a single alien will become a queen morph in the absence of a viable broodmother to produce new eggs, generally the biggest and the strongest of the group, while the others either die contesting the claim or become simple drones.

Bro, that saxophone is fucked up.
>>
>>96438502
Writer for the Alien RPG (Andrew Gaska) doesn't like the crossover.
>>
>>96458850
I think that first appeared explicitly in the Cold Forge novel, but it's also a pretty obvious extrapolation from what we see in Resurrection, Prometheus, and Covenant (and re-visited in Romulus) and goes back at least as far as the mid-ninties material like Alien3 (dog / ox burster different to human version), the Technical Manual (WY scientists speculating that the alien is human shaped because it reads the hosts hox genes or something to adapt to its environment), various comics with variant aliens, and the Kenner toy range. Even the original film had a deleted scene where the alien transforms humans into eggs, suggesting some method of altering their biology. It's also implausible that you could fit an animal as big as a chestburster inside someone's thorax without seriously altering their anatomy or leaving them virtually incapacitated.
>>
>>96458998
>But the powers that be will absolutely fuck you over for a percentage. Crew expendable.
I don't even think it's that bad. In Alien, WY is fucking ruthless, but nobody expects them to be that bad. Right up until they see the evidence, they assume that the company wouldn't throw their lives away. It is obviously meant to be a shocking revalation that the crew are expendable. That isn't the attitude of someone living in a cyberpunk-style world. At worst it's equivalent to modern-day where things are pretty bad for a lot of people, but most normies can still tell themselves that society is more-or-less OK. I think it's more likely the intent that for it to be basically 1970-80s America where society as a whole was pretty much OK, with a few fucked-up things going on but well-concealed from the public.
Aliens doesn't seem any worse. Some bureaucrats are dismissive of what sounds like a crazy story, one influential guy is a psychopath, and he can pull some strings to manipulate events. But the marines are basically good people, and everyone seems to expect society to function OK.
In 3 you have a bit of a step towards dystopia. Then the comics (and, to a lesser extent, the novels) go absolutely crazy with shit like the berserker program (40k dreadnaughts with psycho prisoners inside, who get slowly killed by the suit) and the royal jelly (drug which turns people into insane killing machines extracted from aliens, which the military actually wants). Romulus has WY working its employees to death like some kind of third-world operation, and I think that is too far outside of most normal people's experience to really empathise with. Obviously big corporations now can have some employees who are basically fine and some who are pretty much slaves or whose lives are considered worth little, so it isn't unrealistic to mix them up. But it feels more realist to me if 'crew expendable' is a big deal.
