Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to TSR-era D&D, derived systems, and compatible content.Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons as played in the game's first decade — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching meta-plots and a greater emphasis on player agency. If you are new to the OSR, welcome! >>96489767>But the way described in the n00b guide is not the only way how people here play. You (singular you) have been asked dozens of times to post a play report. You never replied. In fact, you've never contributed anything to this general that wasn't meta. The "best" you've ever done is saying "Dark Sun is a great setting", without elaborating on why, and then agreeing with yourself back and forth three or four times with "yes it's the best setting".It's been obvious for a long time that you don't actually play, you just read splatbooks.Prove us wrong. I don't know if this is the best time to ask or if you're always fighting like this and it's just natural. I was reading The Painted Wasteland and I really like it, it's made for OSE. Is it a good way to get into B/X? I played once and I'd have to re-read and study the rules a bit, I'd also have to explain everything to my players but I'm sure I could run a couple one shots and see if it becomes a short campaign.Should I run some better known begginer one shots to get my footing or whatever grabs my fancy is as good as anything else? I feel that a lot of people publish things for OSE because it's free and they don't care about the system, but I don't know enough to judge which ones are super B/X and work great there and which ones are whatever.

>>96484944Since Wizards nearly fucked over the whole space with the OGL fiasco couple years back, Paizo felt it best to reprint all the core books with new errata and a new license: the ORC. Player Core 1, 2, Monster Core, and GM Core are all the new remastered books you need to run the game. Major differences include massive reworks of the Alchemist, Oracle, Witch, Champion, and Wizard classes; the loss of OGL terms and systems like alignment and spell schools; the addition of core mechanics like Sanctification, Shield Runes, and reworked Crafting, and better organization of player and GM options. It is similar to the 5e2024 refresh/5.5e edition, but it has far more attachment compared to that and isn't really as "negotiable" as that is. You aren't going to see people play the Legacy Edition of 2e (or try to say Legacy Content/stuff that haven't been touched up yet should be banned at the table), and most of the fans are eager to see new Remastered books to see how they update the lore, classes, and errata. For example, Guns & Gears and Treasure Vaults have Remaster books, with Dark Archive coming in February. Any book with a green Second Edition label at the top (plus Rage of Elements) is remastered or using remastered rules/assumptions.
https://2e.aonsrd.com/rules/1231-downtime>Life in a post-scarcity civilization like the Pact WorldsSomehow, I heavily doubt that the Pact Worlds are post-scarcity, even by the Starfinder 2e GM Core's own definition:https://2e.aonsrd.com/rules/1084-technology>Post-Scarcity: At this level of technological progress, there's no longer a need for mortal species to compete for resources. All needs and basic desires are met, resulting in an opportunity for social and artistic progress unhampered by the inequalities of the past. Oftentimes, this level of technology betrays a darker truth, as the society is propped up by those who could only dream of the false utopia. Other times, the civilization's military or explorative tech is no more advanced than a tech renaissance or even late industrial civilization, as some watershed moment in the civilization's history pushed them to focus their efforts on energy, food, technology, and resource allocation. Such a utopia might be accepting and curious of outsiders, or it might fear that the inclusion of outside technology might damage their hard-won harmony.
>>96474548Doing battle stations is a mistake. Like you can do it, but it's not very fun and would be very limited. What you need to do is build the system in such a way that fighters/mecha stay relevant throughout the game. This way your party gets a main carrier ship, probably some retrofitted cargo hauler for a start, and 3-5 mecha/fighters that they would deploy in combat. This way each player gets their own ride to pimp out AND everyone gets something to do in combat since they actually take to the field. Main ship could be piloted by an NPC during combat if needed depending on player preferences. The easiest way to facilitate such approach is Skill/BAB based defenses where ship speed/maneuverability determines how much of them you can use or penalizes them. Like armor maximum Dex bonus. There is little reason to keep best pilots on the heavy ships since they don't really benefit from it much. Fighters/Mecha on the other hand go from defenses being in the 13-15 range to something like 40+ over the course of the game. This makes small ships the most cost effective to deploy if you have the ace pilots to fill in the seats.

One of our campaigns is ending soon and someone is building up a new campaign. I realized that I was in the perfect position to just make a character sheet for it just like I've been doing for my project so that's what I did. GM is having us do ABP with magic items so it's going to be fun just taking as many classes as I can to see if a "whoops all Color Spray" build will be able to last or not lol

I'm developing a civilized Hobgoblin kingdom that the players would come across in some of my DnD campaigns, and I need a name for it. It's kind of like Tudor England (with Stuart influence). The kingdom would be made up of two demographics, the majority being the Hobgoblin (English) and the minority is Fairies (Welsh). While the two are separate races, they're subraces of each other, and are known to intermingle, and many citizens are a mix of the two. The current ruling monarch dynasty is a Fairy noble family that achieved victory in a civil war many decades ago. Goblins are related to them, but generally the two races look down upon their often more barbaric cousins. The main characteristics between Hobgoblins and Fairies:>hobgoblins are shorter than an average human>they have big ears and long noses, but are generally more handsome and human-like than your average goblins>their skin is yellow, and they have luminescent, usually green, eyes>fairies are generally slightly shorter than hobgoblins>they have more human-like proportions, as their skin is pink, and their noses and ears are a bit smaller, but still larger than those of humans>they have big round luminescent eyes, which are usually black>both share similar sense of facial hair, with many sporting different styles of sideburnsCharacteristics of the kingdom>the Kingdom is an island nation known for its powerful Navy and elite Fairy archersComment too long. I have people living in space colonies near a gas giant and I had the idea of them weaponizing the hydrogen they collect off it with giant tanker mines, but how actually do you weaponize that in space, since explosives work quite differently with no atmosphere
>>96489985Just regular old thermonuclear warheads. Big bursts of radiation are still deadly. You can shape your charges too if you want, so consider that to get that sweet sweet Casaba-Howitzer action (nuclear spears). You need more ingredients than that, but at least those are sometimes called H-bombs so you have that. Otherwise, use the hydrogen as reaction mass for kinetic weapons.
I know I'm already flirting with cringe because the whole Batman/Joker thing has been played out for like a decade now but I've been kicking around the idea of a Demiplane of Dread for D&D loosely based on Gotham (But probably more Victorian), Batman and Joker. Before you roll your eyes too hard, I've been kicking around the idea that the Not-Batman is a Straud-esque Dread Lord of the Plane. Why would a hero be a dread lord? Because he actively subjects the world the horrifying freaks of the domain by refusing to do anything to stop them permanently. He's well aware of the death and destruction, and he likes to wax poetic about the virtue of not killing, but there are inhabitants of this domain who have been almost murdered multiple times and have entire graveyards full of family members because he passively let them die. He will actively fight people trying to end villains harder than the villains themselves because they justify his existence.

>>96490159>I guess I'm wrong if that's not the case.Well, like, Strahd and Barovia are a Dracula copy, basically for the sake of fighting Dracula, right? So it seems like, however it works, Frankenstein, Wolfman, Gilligan, and so on, should be able to fit; and Frankenstein's desire was to reanimate his monster - the horror (and punishment) in that story is the *result* of his heart's desire.

I love 930ct long boxes for board/card games but I have about a dozen of them on my shelf and I now require a better way to store them. The bookshelf is just not sufficient, too much wasted space between shelves. Too many stacked boxes. Any advice?
At some point, we all must question whether it's time to get rid of some of those cards.I have some several tens of thousands of cards, and I just keep them in all in large wooden box. All the rares, some 3,000+ of them, are kept in a smaller box. While I have some vague feelings of nostalgia for some of the commons and uncommons, and they all act like a record of my Magic journey, the vast majority are worthless. Were I to sell them in bulk, I might be able to get $100 for all of them, if I were lucky. I will almost certainly never use them in any deck, and the real reason I bother keeping them is because I have enough space where I don't need to worry about a box in a closet. If I ever came to a point where I no longer had space, I probably would just "gift" them to a friend, random child on the street, or sanitation worker. The rares though... While the vast majority of them are $0.10 rares that I could bundle by the hundred and maybe get $5 for, there's definitely several hundred that I could sell for quite a pretty penny. Basically, they're my "If I ever need 1000 bucks fast and have no other way of getting it" emergency fund.

>>96483186That Prisoner Dilemma video is interesting, though I think it puts too much weight on individual matches rather than the sum total of matches, as well as doesn't consider one other factor. The decks likeliest to go to time are ones that have long combos or an inability to close out games. Those sorta decks that need to jump through hoops are the likeliest to face the chicken game the most, and they are also likeliest to have the chicken game result in a double loss on at least two occasions - with them potentially losing otherwise throughout the tournament. So the decks that are likely to rise to the top are ones that can easily establish and break boards, which seems to be decently true with a lot of recent decks. Like it feels like most people get done by the 20-30 minute mark even while the games are still competitive? So maybe Konami is trying to push out decks with large piles of engines and long combos like Snake-Eyes and several earlier had without needing to create a lot of bans? Or they could just be ripping off Bushiroad because apparently those time rules are similar.
Hello I haven't played since Link were added...How is my favourite deck, D/D/D doing?
>>96487916It relatively-recently got support but it's still just a casual deck right now. It should be in a nice place if you're willing to grind it out, but in a nice *casual* place. It's totally unviable and struggles against a good lot of modern decks. This is also a Droll format, unless Konami shows uncharacteristically good judgement and bans that damned card in the upcoming list. People still have the nerve to call it a "necessary evil" when a lot of the current topping decks play around it.
