NGL reading the story of that one outcaste wood aspect whose whole village gets destroyed and she gets sold as a wive for a forest spirit to keep her safe at like 13...She then grows up returns and sadistically murders everyone living in her old village with the help of her spirit allies and has two or three kids with the spirit before he gets bored and she thinks about leaving the forest to start a new life. And that's hot as fuck...

I know I'm already flirting with cringe because the whole Batman/Joker thing has been played out for like a decade now but I've been kicking around the idea of a Demiplane of Dread for D&D loosely based on Gotham (But probably more Victorian), Batman and Joker. Before you roll your eyes too hard, I've been kicking around the idea that the Not-Batman is a Straud-esque Dread Lord of the Plane. Why would a hero be a dread lord? Because he actively subjects the world the horrifying freaks of the domain by refusing to do anything to stop them permanently. He's well aware of the death and destruction, and he likes to wax poetic about the virtue of not killing, but there are inhabitants of this domain who have been almost murdered multiple times and have entire graveyards full of family members because he passively let them die. He will actively fight people trying to end villains harder than the villains themselves because they justify his existence.
>>96467317>Why would a hero be a dread lord? The trouble with your concept anon is that what you go on to describe isn't heroism, it's villainy.
I don't think an evil Darklord Batman would torture people, per say.I think he'd just beat the everloving shit out of them. Imagine if every crook from a starving pickpocket to a panicked swindler was given the mud pit treatment. It's a small difference, but I think it changes the dynamic from a detached sadism in the name of punishment to a more brutal style in the name of fear.
>>96468022>100% deserved.Daily reminder than 5E is non-canon trash. The dark powers are not 100% evil. That's retarded. So if OP wants to out batman as a dark lord he can do it as long as it justified. I don't know how he would insert the super hero aspect tho.
>>96469849I mostly suggested the torture as a way that you could justify the guy actually being in a domain of dread. And at a certain point Evil Darklord Batman stops resembling Batman and all and pretty much just becomes Konrad Curze instead. Having it be torture instead of outright murder just maintains the no-killing rule with a darker twist.
>>96469898I should clarify that when I said "beat the everloving sit out of them" I did also mean "to within an inch of their life (but no further)"

>>96468546Starting at "metalbending police" and working out really would explain a lot, if that's the case. After all, Toph as the police chief is one of the least sensible things that happened during the time between series. Toph has all the needed skills, but an entirely bad temperament for it. Her deciding to start a metalbending police team happens entirely without given explanation for how she came to that decision, and it's very hard to imagine how it happened. It's not like her arc in AtLA particularly directs her towards this, even if matters of trust and care do get better for her.

>>96469680Can't forget that Demon Cult also completely nullifies the terrified person's natural aura regen, but yeah it would be hard to proc against an opponent of the same level. You'd have to either have some absolutely busted technique combo that'd make anyone sweat facing against you or pair it with an illusion type move to make it easier.Honestly I think Shapeshifter is the least interesting. There's some cool stuff sure but it always seemed the most boring option as even though the versatility of its techniques are great they kind of pale in comparison to every other normal technique that isn't even racially restricted. Even the Animal Blood options are pretty lame.Imo: Undead > Yokai > Human > ShapeshifterHuman's buffs are way more busted in the right circumstances but they aren't as general as the first two. Being able to transfer Aura to others when Recovery is a bitch and a half to deal with even for those with Deep systems is an insane technique to have even if it doesn't directly buff your own strength.
>>96469821>but yeah it would be hard to proc against an opponent of the same levelThat's the problem really, it's not something you can really get any use out of. You could make it way cooler than just a regen boost and it still wouldn't be any good because it only works on people you can crush anyway. Like are you only ever going to be fighting in the middle of a slave pen or something? It's just too situational to count as good.>Honestly I think Shapeshifter is the least interesting.Well I'm not really ranking it based on how interesting they are, just how good they are. Shapeshifter is undeniably a better race than Yokai, which has no redeeming traits.>Human's buffs are way more busted in the right circumstances...Yeah that's why I think humans are way better than Yokai. They're situational, but way less situational than a Yokai's. Fighting a specific race or with allies you need to give Aura to is way, way more frequent than being in a situation where you have someone at your level who is still scared of you for no reason, or where you're talking to a retard who actually falls for a devil deal, or if you're fighting someone/something you actually want to fucking kiss.
>>96469857Aura Draining alone puts Yokai above Shapeshifter even if its not exclusive because almost every build can make use of it. Spirit Blood is also the best blood outside of doing something like double Pain recovery with Undead because of being able to take Armed, Seen, Toughened, or Horned, in any combination you want. They make for some of the best Body users because of their potential physical buffs. Drain Kiss is a total skip almost every time but even Devil Deal has its uses as you aren't trying to use it to trick people into a deal, its to confirm that both parties will uphold it. Very niche but going for a build that wants to get others under their thumb you can make good use of it. I fail to see what Shapeshifter can do better in any of the Cores compared to the other races.

>>96469182The only complaint I have is that there's not enough aliens. To me a big point of star wars is that aliens are so absurdly common to the point that they are completely un-noteworthy. This was the whole point of the famed Cantina scene of the original- where otherwise the only aliens are Chewbaca, the Tuskens, and the Jawa's. I understand the idea that both CGI aliens and prop aliens are expensive. But you still have plenty of 'near human' species in the setting to draw from for your human actors. I do think this is a touch from Gilroy who is used to directing less fantastic shows. Book of Boba Fett often gets reamed, but I'd put this as a plus in their favor, the character design in that show was extremely expressive. From the cyborgs, to the tuskens, to the twi'leks, the pikes, the gammorians, the wookies, even some trandoshans in one scene, the mayor of Mos Espa was an Ithorian, etc. etc. and that was a show that was done specifically on the cheap (which is why they hired Robert Rodriguez- he does cheap).
>>96469721>The only complaint I have is that there's not enough aliens.>To me a big point of star wars is that aliens are so absurdly common to the point that they are completely un-noteworthy.Let me wedge into your conversation with an observation that some worlds, particularly, but not necessarily die-hard imperial worlds don't have any "colored" humans, much less aliens.

>>96461612>Should every aspiring GM read Appendix N?"Should" is tricky here but I'd say that while a good chunk of that list is worth reading it could stand some significant improvement.I've actually been spending some time here and there cobbling together a big infographic about what I think is worth reading and/or stealing from for GMs, but organized by genre/relevance and with a focus on foundational elements and tertiary and/or older works. Death in the Silent Places, for example is not only not fantasy but non-fiction and is still a fantastic book for GMs to read.

>>96465092Probably referring to the fact that reading with your physical books with your eyeballs increases retention of information in a similar way to writing notes with a pen and paper versus typing on a keyboard.Analog materials are good. Nothing wrong with audiobooks if you need to fill silence but they will never be the same. Though listening to an audiobook while hiking in nature is some real fucked up behavior.

Found an old idea I had for a fantasy setting a while back lol. The idea was that the world, Ter, had just undergone an industrial revolution, which saw the defeat of the old elf/dwarf nations in a series of revolts. Made some shitty blub for it, so feel free to laugh. It is the dawn of the New Age. For centuries, the Elderkin held dominion over Ter. Yet now, the age of the Elderkin and the arcana wanes. The hum of machines rises from the sprawling cities of men. Smog clouds darken the skies. Factories churn, guns roar, and the earth trembles beneath the march of iron-clad armies.Across Ter, the old magics flicker and fade. The old gods grow silent and cold, replaced by industry. Where once the songs of the Elderkin rang out, cries of revolution resound.Nations fracture, new ideologies rise and faiths are tested. Gunpowder and the arcane alike tear the land asunder. Ancient creatures stirred by this upheaval slink back from forgotten shadows, eager to feast upon the dying world. To live in Ter now is to witness the end of an era, and the birth of a new: the final twilight of magic, the ruthless dawn of industry, and the coming storm of war that will decide the fate of all.Comment too long. >>96469509>vagina dentataObligatory "that's my favorite song from the Lion King!" post.>>96469385Potentially. They could also be some form of Thallain that get Glamour from NTR - ravaging in the most literal sense of the word.>>96469204They're still Possessed. They're just possessed from birth, and have never known as a state other than being a host for their tenant. Technically they could still have the bane kicked out and live if they get healed in a timely fashion.
>>96469726>Technically they could still have the bane kicked out and live if they get healed in a timely fashion.Well, no they can't. The only people who can survive bane removal have the "unpossessed" merit, people who've been imperfectly possessed from the beginning because they weren't fully tainted. Given how ferectoi are Born from taint, it'd be really, Really difficult to find an untainted one. As in "It'd be easier to find a living, breathing, non-spirit unicorn that this thing" hard.
What's your favorite piece of literature for WoD? I'm a big fan of the Clan Novels
>>96469726Like >>96469757 said, you actually can't separate a ferectoi from their bane, because they ARE their bane. It's a perfect fusion, and a core part of their being. They feel no negative effects from their possession, because they ARE their own possession. They were born from Breeder Banes, and their bodies were assembled piece by piece within that dark womb, surrounded by the power of the Wyrm, and made from it. They aren't even really humans, even if they look like us.
>>96469519That's exactly the idea! Complete self-assurance, and inhuman arrogance, encompassed by the petulant cruelty of a psychopathic child. She is accompanied everywhere by her hulking fomori minder, and he serves as her muscle (since outside of her warform she isn't really tough or strong). So that adds a new dimension to her wickedness, since she literally has the biggest "my dad can beat your dad" complex in the room.
