This general encompasses all board game genres - Eurogames, Ameritrash, Ameritreasure, Fillers, Party, Abstracts, Wargames, and especially the game that one anon is autistic about at this very moment.

TQs:
- Which designers got better with age and which ones got worse?
- What component would you like to see more in games?
- What's the genre you like the most and the one you like the least?

NV trades exploration for narrative. It's a storyshit railroad but at least it's a good one.

Fallout 3 trades a good narrative for a fun world to explore with lots of cool hidden shit, it's a litterbox but its main quest is utter dogshit.

I've always thought Manchuria was an underrated setting for a potential roleplay in the Fallout Universe. Have it set along the Korean border, the Russian border and in as far as regions in Heilongjiang as Harbin city, creeping a little in the Gobi desert

>The Remnants of the US army deployed for the Gobi Desert campaign settle into their own faction. Being so isolated from the US mainland and so many years having past, their past existence in The United States comes to seem semi-mythological. They talk as if they're something similar to displaced men from the city of Troy
>Koreans have their own towns and cities, and still follow a form of "juche" in that they keep their settlements self sufficient and closed off
>Russians in Vladivostok leave the bombed out city for the storage docks by the port, living in shipping containers that have been converted into homes. Siberia further north is even more of a frozen wasteland that's even harsher to live in, despite being relatively free from radiation
>Mainland China further south is heavily radiated, and was more heavily bombed than the United States was. Their "Vault" system was an extension of their underground rail system, and cities burrowed down in extensive elaborate interconnected tunnels between cities along the coast. They call it the "People's bunker".
>Because The Chinese Northeast is the one habitable part of China left, people start emerging from the People's bunker and settle the land, with massive tensions between them, the Russians, Americans and Koreans. Most people are jaded and cynical, but a few dedicated redguards who believe in Maoism remain.
>The largest Chinese city is a few kilometers inside the People's bunker, and it trades extensively agricultural products made in Manchuria for manufactured products produced within the bunker itself using old world technology.
>>
>>96637885
But yeah, most of the "Fallout set in other countries" thing is just people wanting to basedface over The Big Ben or Brandenburg Gate or whatever appearing as a location. Which I get, it's cool, but you can do any post apocalyptic setting for that.

The reason I think Northeastern China works as a setting is because it matches with the Fallout lore already. We know

>Mainland China was more heavily destroyed and "sent back to the stone age". The Chinese Northeast could be the one part of China that's about as habitable as the post-apocalyptic United States
>The United States soldiers were present in mainland china at the time of collapse, and were engaged in a Gobi Desert campaign
>Crossroads between Russians, Koreans and the Chinese make for interesting cultural dynamics and more clear-cut social and racial divisions in the region

Plus the idea of the Chinese approaching the vault system a different way is cool I think. With their highly overpopulated coastline, it's natural to assume they'd just build down as a means of surviving nuclear war. It's also reflective of the communist mentality to have megaprojects that are, on paper, for all people. It leans into the idea that Mao Zedong repetitively pushed, that China could survive nuclear war and keep on fighting. It's a nice contrast to the individualistic and corporate Vault Tec way of privatized, separate bomb shelters.

For an overarching campaign plot you could have it that the American faction in the Gobi desert is worried about the growth of Chinese towns and cities in Manchuria, and tries to bomb apart the openings to the People's Bunker in the region. With the players either siding with the Chinese or the Americans, and the Russians or the Koreans being factions that could lean either way.
>>
>>96637972
Personally I think a Warlord Era redux would be a more interesting way to take it. You're talking about a huge swath of territory almost twice the size of California for just the real world Chinese territorial part.

Couple of ideas I've had for a China Fallout:
Lots of ghouls. Pre-War or very old ghouls are prized in China as knowledge repositories; whether that means honored teacher or chained to a machine for decades varies from place to place. China actually knew about ghoulification before the War due to its horrific workplace and environmental safety practices and extensively experimented on them resulting in being able to induce ghoulification with a minimum of side effects as per official degree that is illegal to question or dispute, resulting in the Pre-War Chinese government largely still existing as it was deep in its own private bunker-city. Very few robots with what do exist usually have human brains at their core, and a lot of cybernetics of varying degrees of crudity. Lots of mutated wildlife. Giant salamanders that spout NPC dialogue to make you think someone is nearby. Amphibious river dolphin pack hunters. Swarms of giant maneating locusts.

The divergence with the United States took place in the 1950s and 60s, with the transistor being late to develop and culture sort of remaining stuck in that Americana.

For China I imagine the divergence takes place after Mao's death, the Gang of Four succeed him with Jiang Qing at the lead, Deng Xiaoping remains in exile working on tractors, and the Cultural Revolution never really ends. The free market reforms of the 80s never take place, neither does the One Child Policy, and China's population explosion is even larger and longer lasting than it was historically. Perhaps having 3-4 billion people, mostly living in coastal cities, at the time of The Great War. For a hundred years you have had the cultural revolution raging on in one form or another, keeping the country culturally in a time capsule with a self imposed "bamboo curtain" locking them out from the world, with them beating the same redguard drum that entire time.

It's heavily implied through all the main fallout games that China is somewhat behind in most technology, but advanced in a few. They're behind in robotics and power armor, but advanced in stealth and biotech (The new plague and the stealth suit well outpace both the FEV and stealth-boys). I imagine their massive population explosion is fueled by advancements in farming and agricultural output that far outpace similar developments in the US. For computers as you said, human brains are relied upon for computational power, hooked up to machines, which are rudimentary and prone to errors (similar to modern LLM AI).

Fun fact about halflings!
-They're short
-They're fat
-They're legally distinct and NOT owned by the Tolkien estate
-In 5e they have the ability to reroll 1's on checks, which isn't that impressive because only faggots believe in critical failures
-In AD&D they're restricted to only fighter and thief classes, and they could only reach 6th-level fighter, so playing a thief or a multi-class are the only viable options
-Halflings have a slower walking speed, making people who play halflings fucking bellends
-Despite this halflings are so cute that I still play them when the party needs a rogue/thief

Also, this is firmly a D&D thread, but halflings can be found in other RPGs like Pathfinder or WFRP. If you want to discuss halflings in these settings you are doing it wrong, but I can't stop you.

Definitely feels like that. Especially because I read a couple of 5e adventure books and they tend to be very bland when it comes to environment and interaction with said environment outside of some basic effects like getting lost/cold in the blizzard. Me and one more player believe he is sticking to the book too much because he's kinda scared the game is gonna become too unbalanced (not unjustified, though), but that ends up forcing us the players to become more stale and bland too which is bad. Especially for our table where the characters have vastly different ways to interact with the world.

I guess you'd prefer the statement to be revised to "barely 2000 backers" since you actually think that +140 is such a big deal, and I see no reason not to oblige.
We're still talking about incredibly tiny numbers, especially considering how valuable you thought some loose change was.

Considering that he had to resort to using AI art, that either means the costs have gone beyond what he projected, or he's genuinely grifting the people who bought the game. The fact that he managed to get whatever money he did get out of so few people kind of helps explain the cult-like behavior that seems to have infected the game.

Thus do we resume the tale of the Techpriestess, continued from https://archive.4plebs.org/tg/thread/96534664/#q96543298

>For weeks, the fleet of the von Nassau-Mendoza dynasty had hung in orbit above the world of Sarnath, a backwater garden planet at the edge of the Segmentum Solar. Only one jump now separated them from Holy Terra itself. Yet for all the grand parades and religious proceedings that surely awaited upon the throne-world of Mankind, it was here, far from the prying eyes of the masses, where the true climax of this affair was fated to play out.

>Upon the bridge of the 'Argentum Omnipotens,' the Rogue Trader contemplated the extent of his triumph. Invitations had been sent to the aristocracy of every corner of the Imperium, bidding them come celebrate his Techpriestess' triumphant return from exile. Yet those who would answer his summons knew well that it was but a pretext. In truth, this would be the glorious debut of a dynasty that had too long languished in obscurity. And more than that, it would be a celebration of the absolute power of wealth. With sheer weight of coin, he had bent the scales of justice until a mad heretek could be hailed a saintly hero. He, Cassius von Nassau-Mendoza had done this, and in a few short hours, the foremost notables of his generation would heap praise upon him for it.

>Ten thousand kilometers away, on the bridge of the 'Pitiless Blade,' Salafié gazed upon the same vista. Perhaps their eyes met somewhere out there in the void, which grew more crowded by the hour with the ships of arriving nobles, but while Cassius was fixed upon his cynical politicking, Salafié cared only for the ships. Not since her youth on the orbital ring of Hydraphur had she seen such a display of naval majesty! From diminutive sloops to colossal battleships as ancient as the Imperium itself, her bionic eyes drank in every detail of their designs, and she basked in a delight that few outside of the Adeptus Mechanicus would understand.

>The Priestess was recalled from her reverie by the telltale sound of Lady Mirabella's palanquin of servitors shambling onto the bridge behind her. She did not turn from the view, but waited for the girl to speak.

>"I have been called away to a meeting with the Navis representatives. It seems I was declared dead in my absence, and they must restore title to my holdings."

>Salafié idly studied the Navigatrix's sullen tone. "I would have thought it pleasing to reclaim your fortune, as taken with luxuries as you are."

>"The Lord-Captain seems set on me missing the festivities."

>"Well, what did you expect, Mira? You grow less presentable by the day."

>And it was true: For all her finery, Mira seemed terribly changed of late. Pallid and tremulous, skin slick with cold sweat and eyes smoldering with unwholesome luminance, the dark tears of condensed Warp essence that stained her cheeks only added to the picture of corruption.

>"It's your fault, Sala," the Navigatrix murmured, "It was you who let the Geller field fail."

It wasn't an issue of the players not having enough resources to keep up in gear, since I made sure that as far as normal pf items went they had enough to afford all the math fixers necessary for the core stuff they were all doing. It's just that even being able to afford all the items they needed up to anything level+1, it was all still boring dogshit.
For the record, when I describe the homebrew items as "overpowered anime bullshit" i mean it:
>boots that lets you replace your move actions with teleports of equivalent distance
>ring that lets you use slightly modified versions of vampiric touch, vampiric exsanguination, and blood boil, scaled to the player's level, and the first two heal instead of giving temp hp, but they can't heal by any other means
>belt that lets you convert damage you take into increased damage dealt
>bracers that, for lack of a better way of putting it, basically turned the monk into a jojo character with a stand
>mask that made the character completely immune to any non-divine magic, whether positive or negative, including making them unable to use magic items or cast spells that weren't divine
>"Lucky" amulet that turned all their successes on any actions they dealt (saves, attack rolls, skill checks etc) into crit successes, but also did the same for any failures (enemy hitting them, failing a save, etc)
and the relative encounter difficulty was around the same at each step of the power level creep - people were getting downed, burning resources and consumables etc at a similar rate all throughout.

>>96636305
Yes. But you can crank the DC to hard for pc level and it's fine.
If you make their use too frequent it means players will just spam the same one, which is boring. They should be rummaging through their collection and passing them around, which is more fun.

Outside of the fact there are several games that abides to the classic Vancian Magic-esque (as some pedants will say it isn't even REAL Vancian Magic) like Final Fantasy 1 & 3, Wizardry and similar descendants like Class of Heroes 1, or Lords of Magic, Vancian Magic is a staple of the d20 fantasy space because it provides casters a very structured sense of flow. Whether you are prepared or spontaneous, it helps keep you flexible and caring about how each spell rank matters, not just the top-level options. Systems like MP, while more flexible, can just be too unrestrained and hard to work with, either as GM or Player. Having your top-level magic start coming at the expense of low-to-middle tier can really provide more pressure to players into not using their resources at all. It's why even AEDU struggles to be found in the modern day (beyond 5e's flirting with the ideas with Short/Long Rest abilities): you just need to create more a gradient in your player abilities to make them comfortable using them in less-than-optimal circumstances. Having your most potent stuff all competing in their respective slots really does hurt various forms of player and developer expression.

You also have to acknowledge you aren't playing those forms of media. For as derivative of fantasy games like Pathfinder can be, they still are their own form of fantasy at the end of the day. You approach on their terms of how they handle certain concepts, not how they "should" be compared to something in an entirely different medium. Especially when you are playing with 4 other dudes.

While your ideas probably wouldn't fly too well in a real book, even in a far less restricted game than 2e, I do think 2e can afford to have far more impactful effects for its magic items. Especially if they will stick with the once-per-day limitations on them.
Many of them don't even match the average spell slot.

I dont know what about it but i find Vancian to be very lame. Thats why despite me liking pf2e, i usually play martials and get my hands on cantrips and focus spells. Slots just feel so unfun to me, i don’t know why.

The race people choose because it was eccentric looking has become so mainstream that it is now necessary to make them even more "not like everybody else". Or maybe playing a conventionally attractive devil-girl would draw the dreaded male gaze?

I dunno, anon, watching him giggle as he described a robot orgasm had me cringing out of my seat.
All matters of 'player consent' bs aside, he should've skipped anything sex related because he is a deeply unsexy person.
>>
>>96637604
Pretty sure it's supposed to be goat ears, to play up the devil/goat angle.

>robot orgasm
but that's what these theater kids call character development. After all, CR spends most of their time writing a soap opera. Characters hooking up is their definition of adventuring.

Holy fucking shit what an ugly character

I think the point is to bolster the new cards for newer players; Traumend uses Rosarium Fairy and would like to have Vivace, and Drajeweled has yet to get off of the G4 support. Likewise there might be cards that haven't been reprinted in a year that cards in the new sets really want, like a playset of Amorta, who's a RRR from a year ago and belonging to a popular deck.

It's the same reason they hit Trickmoon: to convince people to get the new product, and so if you have the skeleton you might be interested in getting its really good new support.
>>96634627
if anything the Odium reprints seem like the odder choice over Amorta since Noctursio wasn't included in the Michiru deckset, presumably because of the reprint in set 6, which was only one set after Odium.
>>
>>96635288
This is a new level of not caring. Amorta is not a stable boss and her personal support really fucking blows. Even if they do throw in the keter pile to have a real sell point its still better to just pull it for a better deck like Rezael.

Holy based. The bunker is literally the best thing to ever happen to this community.

>Industrious would not provide staff. It just sets your domain up to be a mini paradise for people who [Profession]. So long, it has rooms designed for theoretical and practice classes. There's never a shortage of chalk, pencils, pencils, or other such things. You don't just have a kitchen, you have an eaten area designed to handle and serve throngs of students without making the cooks want to kill themselves, ect. Actually, having students or teachers beside you is a separate thing.
Ah, the comment about your people threw me off.

>Same for the library. Frontier specifically is a place where lore is hard to come by because the lorekeepers either went evil or cannibalized the ones that wouldn't bend the knee or escape in time. It's why The Big Book of Plot Relevance is its own item. So I can add a library trait of some sort, but its probably gonna be expensive due to the nature of the setting.
Hmm. Maybe adding additional levels to it would work? One level for several large bookshelves filled with books, two levels for a large room, three levels and one purchase of Grand for the third level, four levels and two purchases of Grand for the fourth level.
