I recently read through the 2e rules and classes after years of being away from RPGs (largely due to disgust with wotc/5e and that being the only option in my area). I had really high hopes because of what I had remembered reading about some classes like Investigator and their Devise A Strategy, or the Swashbuckler and its Panache/Bravado. I also liked the idea of the 3-action turns. But honestly, I really dislike most of what I've read directly and over the last several threads here.- Most classes have few class features, frontloaded in the first level or three and then basic stat boosts from then on.- MOST features/actions/spells boil down to conditional +1 or -1 buffs/debuffs. I know it's supposed to still be functional due to degrees of success but it still looks like most of them would usually be ineffectual and dull, so why bother casting or using those abilities if you could just hit someone for real damage instead?- MOST classes sound like they fail to deliver their class fantasy overall, whether due to being incompetent at their intended role or being a baffling mishmash of hyper-specific features that aren't coherent or thematic. Thaumaturge is a kinda neat idea but I just can't understand what it's supposed to be thematically other than its mechanics. I thought Exemplar would be like Hercules or the 4e Invoker, but they're all fixated on using artifacts they somehow make but only use up to one of at a time. It's lame. Oracle feels like a pale shadow of its 1e version I remember. Guardian is very coherent but seems utterly shoehorned into "guy with heavy armor who does nothing out of combat."- In the end, the only classes that actually seemed like they'd be interesting to me are Alchemist due to its freebie items throughout the day (but which I don't trust to function well now), Commander, Investigator (to some degree and only if the metanarrative stuff doesn't break the campaign/DM), Kineticist, and Swashbuckler.Am I right? Is it really this bad?
>>96766786>Is it really this bad? That's your opinion, man. What is your game history?
>>96766786I also played a decent amount of (always low-level) PF1e in the past, and I thought it was a mixed bag. In 1e, I disliked how it felt like martials were generally stat-strapped and left with poor out-of-combat options (so only casters and such could really participate well out of fights). I also disliked spell slots (still around here other than kineticist, and even worse on magus/summoner). And I hated how many of the class features in 1e boiled down to once or few times per day despite being marginal. But now it seems like that problem just shifted to casters, and while still marginal, at least martials can mostly use them at will. And the magic item progression in 2e sounds annoying, but maybe I just don't understand it well enough to appreciate.>>96766809DND 3.5 / PF1e (varied wildly)DND 4e (liked)DND 5e (hated)Iron Kingdoms (liked)Numenera (hated)13th Age (liked)Delta Green (not my normal cuppa tea, but liked)40k Dark Heresy (liked)Star Wars FFG (not much, but liked and want to do more)Lancer (liked, but seemed very hard to GM)Comment too long. Can someone explain Eldritch Blasts to me narratively? I'm assuming Forgotten Realms because it's the default, but if anyone has thoughts on it for other settings, that's welcome too. What confuses me is that I understand most people in-universe wouldn't necessarily distinguish people based on Class because that's a purely mechanical category. Like people might look at a Barbarian, Fighter, or Fighter2/Rogue1 as just a warrior, soldier, or knight, while they might look at a sorcerer and a wizard and see two mages. However, at what point do mechanics cross over into narrative and vice versa? What I mean is, Eldritch Blast is uniquely a Warlock spell. Not just a spell, but a central feature of the class (which for some reason is optional), so while an average person wouldn't be able to tell the difference, wouldn't any knowledgeable mage be able to see an Eldritch Blast being cast and instantly be able to tell that "hey, that person must've made a pact with some kind of being" or something like that?Pretty new to DnD/tabletop so please don't tear me a new one for stupid questions.
>>96766499An eldritch blast, in-world, can be flavored different. Seeing a colored blast of force come out of a guy's hand doesn't necessarily tell you what the spell is. Your average person might make assumptions about how they gained their spells, but even a highly learned Wizard wouldn't necessarily know. It's not like NPCs and lore characters are stuck to the same rigid class feature/spell list structure as player characters. Standardization for the sake of gameplay doesn't equate to a universal lore standard.
>>96766097thanks for the stuff on slime girl I wasn't suuuper hung on anything more just figuring what to do for the slime girl. just wanted to find something fun I could do. Would you recommend any multiclass or go full warlock fiend pact of the blade?

I've decided to decease my internet time and blue light exposure, buy an ebook reader, and get used to finishing the day with some reading, instead of all the other things that give me insomnia. What /tg/-related books have you been reading anon, or what you think what other people should read too? I've read Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit before I knew what the hell ttrpgs even were. Same with the original Dragonlance books. I was thinking of picking up Elric of Melnibone and Original Conan the Barbarian. Already read and enjoyed Eisenhorn, most of the Slayer books with Gotrek, first 1.5 of the Black Company books. And dear god I haven't read books for fun in so long, what have I been doing?
>>96756784Tales of Ethshar: low-stakes stories set in a high fantasy world. There's a really weird mixture of wonder and utter pedestrianism that is weird and charming. The first book literally does not know when to end. An army scout is working while a war between good and evil is in the background, gets cursed by a wizard accidentally, becomes a war hero, becomes an assassin crucial for the war effort, the war ends through divine intervention, he then wanders off to find something else to do because hes now out of a job, he then gets into the hospitality industry and becomes a successful pub owner and it still fucking goes on after that. I love it.Another is about a kid wizard who learns one spell - to light fires - before his very master dies. He can't get any other wizards to take his apprenticeship on so wanders around for a bit before getting caught up in an 'adventure' to kill a dragon. It's not a grand quest, he's not driven by anything other than 'fuck me I need money to eat' and it basically results in a bunch of heavily armed young men wandering aimlessly around the countryside hoping to get lucky. The "reward" isn't even, theres hundreds of shitty small kingdoms in the area and this one's king is just trying someone to marry his daughter. Dragonslayer is prestigious enough to count, the actual reward is this random "princess" who would be a minor noble anywhere else and the cash is her dowry. One is about a guy who gets hired to help take over some shitty country. One of his hired mages accidentally attains ULTIMATE POWER and basically becomes demigod in the process, so conquers the country they were meant to take over himself. In a day. The MC feels very awkward for his client, but the SuperMage befriends him because he was nice to him. So now the MC is just hanging out in this country that worships this dude he met in a pub as a god, trying to stop the whole thing from going to the guy's head too much. It's all great.
