Dropping your weapon on a critical fail might be worth +1. Paying 1 FP is certainly worth at least +1. Overall, it doesn't look like there is much if any added on for the option to pay an extra 1 FP to add blocking spells to the list of defences.

My plot was a police raid on a compound that starts with an easy shootout but then a militant opens the cages releasing werewolves, vampires, etc into the compound. The players had to differentiate between humans and monsters while also fighting horrors in close quarter spaces and trying to get as much evidence as possible.I also got the idea from the image set you posted as well.
