Why would you ever invite a Ravnos to your haven for any reason, anyway
>>
>>96858856
We've played exclusively in his "mobile haven" (aka an ancient RV with cardboard taped on the windows) ever since he tried stealing our GM's lucky dice. He's an annoying bastard, but there aren't that many Kindred interested in playing pretend as Ensigns on the USS Enterprise, so we have to put up with him.
>>
Back when I was still at the old Chantry, we had a Pathfinder 2e game going for a couple years but one of the neonates rolled up a barbarian, which lead to another talking shit and calling him a meathead. Fists started flying and the Bishop banned tabletop games for ten years as a punishment. We really needed someone to play a tankier class because everyone else rolled up mage classes only.
Also I've recently started to practice tattooing on myself, as after each morning the ink just gets pushed out of my skin. This means I just have to wrap a towel around that spot before bed, but I've had a pretty good time so far doing my own legs because they're the easiest to reach, and way cheaper than fake or pig skin. Project Gothabilly is also moving along pretty well, I've been following her around when I have free time to make sure everything's in the clear before I Ghoul her.
>>
The robbery was a success, the chinks interfered in the deal and gave us a small window to steal the diamonds, that million is ours after we deliver these to the Toreador that hired us.
I still have to see if I can get a better cut out of the payment because the middleman wants half for the contract.
Ate some lead but nothing serious, also almost got my head ripped of by a Brujah if it wasn't for my friend who got my six and emptied the mag on that guy.

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first decade, Gygaxian D&D, its more faithful modern clones, and content created specifically for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended and taught by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons as played in the game's first decade (74-83) — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching meta-plots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread, feel free to check them out for answers:

Undermountain is the coziest megadungeon.
Has a cozy tavern right at the entrance, other adventurers leave notes and grafitti, and there's horrifying rape monsters waiting on the lower levels no one talks about because no one's come back from that far.

You'd be amazed at how many people have their minds blown by a game like Shadowdark because it does shit as small as telling people to track time and inventory. But it's what they need to hear. They don't understand why 5e doesn't feel right, and then they play something that tells them to do the things they neglect in every game and it's a huge epiphany about RPGs to them.

1-on-1 card games are more of an optimization exercise than a proper game, where most of the "skill" weight is on pre-game decisions and matchup lottery. Randomness is one of the few real ways to make it so the game isn't effectivly decided from the start. (Netrunner gets special mention for the "shell game" aspect also influencing this, it feels cheap at times but it introduces real variance.) The logical conclusion of this is "the more one needs to be able to navigate chaos, the more actual gameplay matters." So from the standpoint of a pure play experience, EDH is a better game than 1v1 Magic.

Is CAIN a good system to run? I like a lot of the ideas in it, but the actual crunch on the system feels very loose. If not, is there a similar game to it that would work as well for the setting?

This is largely a byproduct of not playtesting the games he designs. He goes off of vibes and what he thinks sounds good, which will get most designers through the basic framework, especially if they're just adapting mechanics from other proven systems. However, because he's either not playtesting, or he's playtesting with crowds of people who will adore anything he makes even if it's ass, he doesn't actually have a good sense for what works in a multi-hour session of gameplay.

>I'd have amazons be a third gender,
My best amazons have been like this, I find it actually does a pretty good job of removing some of the inherent cheesecake to the concept, to take them a step away from standard human reproduction cycles.
My favorite have been arctic amazons that reproduce, literally, via spores. Focus on archery, hunting, and cold weather survival, and go temporarily sterile if they enter high humidity environments, because the spores get wet. A combination of magical nuclear waste, and an old as fuck, paranoid dragon did it, mostly.

I remember a long time ago someone posted a battle report that was Amazons vs Beastmen, under the pretense that the beastmen needed wives and the amazons had snubbed them when the beast king proposed the idea to the amazon queen.
I remember thinking about how that might work out, if beastmen always sire beastmen and amazons always birth girls, then what happens when they combine? Monstergirls, of course.

Per George it's still possible to collect a person's Living Force energy and store it. Mother Talzin was having Living Force extracted and store from various people in order to re-energize herself enough to resume her corporeal form after she used her Force witchery to become insubstantial to escape Grievous. She still kept all of the extracted energy in the same tank, so obviously people got blended but you could in theory just take one and store one and retain the person, presumably indefinitely. The new shit did reuse Sith having bound their Living Force essence to objects such as Darth Momin to his mask. Also I think Darth Filonius said that the Sith holocron Ezra had contained a specific person, but I can't be arsed to look it up. Also somehow the Grand Inquisitor returned as a ghost in the comics. Darth Vader keeps his spirit bound in his castle and occasionally sends him out to fuck with Luke, or whatever. Don't ask me how Vader managed to get his Living Force after he fell into an exploding hyperspace reactor.

It's not like a person's Living Force is really consumed as in ingested. Your spirit becomes part of the Cosmic Force, spread across everything. In theory a Force user who knows their shit could, in theory, pull a person back together again. It would be like trying to refill a cup with the same water you poured into the ocean years ago, but as Yoda would have it never underestimate the Force. Now imagine the horror of Yoda and Obi-Wan restoring the entire Prequel Jedi Council as Force Ghosts. Imagine how much damage they could do.

Also, and again in theory, an easier method would likely be because as part of the Cosmic Force the Ghosts are unbound to time and space. They could just hop back to the point in time where Mace Windu got through out the windu and yank his ass into Ghosthood. Just in time to play pep squad to Rey.

>Now imagine the horror of Yoda and Obi-Wan restoring the entire Prequel Jedi Council as Force Ghosts. Imagine how much damage they could do.
lets not forget the voices of jedi past in TROS (despite how shit the movie is)

seemingly, the nightsisters have their own spirit realm, its where talzin goes when she becomes incorpreal (and stays around without a body after dying in son of dathomir) where ventress goes when she's buried as a ghost, the dead nightsisters are presented as ghosts in the same episode as well as the nightsister ghosts which can possess people in rebels, you also have the dead nightsisters lending their power to the living as presented in fallen order

the real question is why doesnt ventress' spirit pass into the cosmic force when she dies, and appears on dathomir as a ghost months later as soon as she's buried
maybe theres some form of "spirit trapping"? their spirit cant become part of the cosmic force because of some latent nightsister spell?
>>
>>96861448
>lets not forget the voices of jedi past in TROS (despite how shit the movie is)
I think that's what the "pep squad" comment was for. It would explain why Anakin's ghost was so absent in the sequels if he was still hiding from Mace WIndu's ghost.

>seemingly, the nightsisters have their own spirit realm
I thought the problem Talzin had was while she had enough witchy ichor to phase herself through solid matter she didn't have enough to fully come back. She tries to have a cult acquire enough force energy another way but Jar Jar and Mace stopped that, so in a comic she possessed Dooku and fed off of him until she could come back in time to get stabbed to death. I always wondered what the ramifications of that was to Dooku. Did she Force "level drain" him and this is why he was so much weaker in Revenge, or did he fully recover and it was just Anakin having leveled up on his own?
>>
>>96861448
>the real question is why doesnt ventress' spirit pass into the cosmic force when she dies
Forgot to comment. I somehow doubt Filoni will ever give a concrete reason. The strongest fan theories revolve around the fact that Obi-Wan and Vos left her body to sink into the Nightsister's ichor reservoir. Ichor is basically concentrated living force they obtain from a giant fish monster and fuels their magicks. That's why when they shoved it into Savage Opress he not only became able to use the Force but he was also made larger, more muscular, and able to withstand withering blaster fire. His body was sustained by a large dose of Force energies and when he was horribly wounded it leaked out of him as smoke.

Mathematically what's the difference between have 11 rookies and 12? Since I started playing this game I've followed the /tg/ template of 12R, 10C, 8U, 6M and so forth, but I'm not a math person so I don't actually know how much it matters? A lot of JP lists seem to run 10 to 11 rookies and it'd be nice to have a bit more room for some of the new options that have come out.

A thread to talk about minis and games which fall between the cracks, or peoples' homebrew wargames.
The >>>/tg/hwg thread doesn't entertain fantasy (for good reason) and the other threads are locked to more specific games.
This thread isn't tied to a game, a publisher, or a genre, let's just talk about fun wargames. Any scale, any company, any miniatures.

>Examples of games that qualify.
A Song of Ice and Fire, Argatoria, Batman Miniature Game, Carnevale, Conquest: The Last Argument of Kings,
Deadzone, Dragon Rampant, Dropfleet and Dropzone Commander, Freebooter's Fate, Frostgrave, Gaslands, Judge Dredd,
HeroClix, Kings of War, Maelstrom's Edge, Malifaux, Marvel Crisis Protocol, Masters of the Universe: Battleground, Moonstone,
Oathmark, OnePageRules, RelicBlade, Rumbleslam, StarCraft, Stargrave, Sludge, Urban War, Void,

What's it like seeing the world through your eyes? If someone spits in your face, do you comment on the rain? It's so fascinating anyone can be this much of a dipshit, failing at basic math and telling people to say exactly what they did already say. It seems like it would be a nice experience, though, to go through life like Chauncey Gardiner.
>>
>>96861252
why are you so mad? I was just confused by that odd bit you added to your post, it's like saying "yeah the perfect number for that thing is between -infinity and +infinity, but it depends on this and that"
>>
>>96861303
Because if you thought it was a weird way to say it, you could have just said that. If you thought it was too big of a range, you could have just said that. Instead you did the most annoying thing possible, which was say something other than what you really meant, in the form of acting dumb.

What makes it "such a weird way to put it"? Based on what? What makes it a "massive range"? It's just the range. If something is variable, you can still use a numbers to describe it. You don't have to give up entirely and say it "isn't to be judged."
>>
>>96861459
we're talking about board games and how to determine when a collection is too big or too small, and you say "umm well yes obviously the best number is something around 60 adding or subtracting half that"
I don't think most people would say "oh yes i think the best number of kids you should have is X ±Y%" and the odd way of saying didn't allow me to immediately understand the meaning, so no, in >>96861017 i really didn't get what you meant
that said, 30-90 is a huge range, unless your collection consists almost entirely of smallbox games (but even then), 60 is ALOT
so yes, it's akin to saying "well yes, the ideal number is between -infinity and +infinity"
>>
I like to think about my boardgame collection in terms of porn content.

Most of the time, I like porn that has one guy and one girl, is maybe a little rough, and she talks dirty. I have some of those where instead of talking dirty, she cries. I wouldn't watch one where the guy cries so those are right out. I mean I'd watch one with more guys or more girls but ultimately, there's too much stuff going on and I have trouble staying interested and following the plot so I'll watch it if a friend brings it or maybe it has a lot of buzz - wouldn't own it. An avant-garde one would be ok occasionally but I'm not really looking for something to keep on the shelf that I'm not planning on watching a lot.

So yeah, I like boardgames, too.

We finally got Lightning Greaves in Brawl edition

Yeah, I'll try it a couple of times. First crafts are probably going to be Seething song, Upheavel and dress down.

How many lands do I put into this thing

I made a thread like this months ago and have added more to my setting. Looking to build up more.

Not to be a cunt, but why even bother making your own setting at all if you're just going to make it so aggressively generic? If you're just going to fill it up with tropes from more popular worlds, you may as well just run a game in a premade.

How do the empires in your setting execute sexual deviants like homosexuals and transgenders? Immolation, lapidation, defenestration, hanging, beheading?

I'm leaning towards something equivalent to our 1600's to 1700's level of technological advancement. Black powder guns and weapons have gotten more advanced, but armor and forged melee weapons are still used.

It is a bad answer man, no offense. You can't just grab something from a setting and just slap it elsewhere and call it a day without even bothering to read or investigate WHY that was made on the first place. It reminds me of those silly JRPGs that grab Ancient Egypt and just copypaste it elsewhere.
Anglo-saxon put a lot on emphasis on the great deeds of a person and the respects they would pay to their liege. Boasting was a proclamation of one's capabilities and intention of carrying forth a quest, and so a good chunk of Anglo-saxon literature revolved around strong capable men boasting about their future victories.
They are NOT Arthurians nor shiny knights in armor and I can't stress this enough. I heavily suggest reading the dual translation of Beowulf to get the vibe. English lost a LOT of its prose and poetic beauty so, get in touch with your Anglo ancestors. Alternatively, check YT for live readings.
I can't recommend anything on the Norsemen. Hopefully some kind Anon will chime in.

NTA, but here's my thoughts on this: On the one hand, this is right. Understanding what you're doing can be fairly important. Because consideration for the existing meaning of something helps you make sense of what your audience will think about it, and also gives you some ways you can interplay some things that are related. Tolkien understood this, and was highly critical of anyone who didn't abide by this way of thinking.

But also, you have to be willing to go "it doesn't necessarily matter if I take inspiration from this or that, or drastically alter something, as long as it makes sense in the context that I've done." It's a reasonable take to make, and you should feel free to do cool shit with your imagination. Tolkien can bitch about allegorical lions, Father Christmas, fauns, and dwarves all existing in the same story, and maybe he has a point in there somewhere, but you can do your own thinking and decide how you like to put your things together.

elaborate

Honestly, 'deplete life points to zero' is so common you had to be aware it would easily allow your indy game to drown in a sea of competitors?
