Back in AD&D there could be only a single high level Druid. Nobody else could advance until the one holding the title passed away.
These weird tidbits of lore reflected in rules are like fragments of a soul that nu-D&D is missing.

I do think it might go too far though. Players should inherently want to do the things they made their characters good at, because generally people want to be competent. If a player made a rogue that doesn't want to be sneaky or deal with security, rather than depriving them of experience, I'd ask if they're sure they want to be a rogue.

if you want wacky rules you want the first printing of hackmaster.

What's the most self-indulgent thing you've added to your world?

I love world building, I've done various settings that are all wildly different from each other. The only thing they all have in common is that my Phobia doesn't exist there. It makes me happy to imagine a world where what I fear the most doesn't exist.

Colonization. Not the libtard way or the coomer fetish way. An Empire that rules over conquered people. How much does it respect those people? How much do the conquered respect the Empire? Have Imperials gone native and embraced the conquered peoples culture, art, or lifestyles? How 'Imperialized' have the natives become? Has intermarriage created hybrid peoples? I could go on and on. A giant continent spanning Empire also allows for me to have familiar elements in all my games.

Arcane spellcasters are utterly detestable people 95% of the time. Typically this also involves them being persecuted and oppressed, and rightfully so. If a player wants to play one, they are warned ahead of time that they will both have to keep their abilities secret and also be prepared to deal with persecution.
The reason why arcanists are so hated varies from setting to setting but in my most recent one, all magic is based on manipulating the "bonds" between things.
Psionics are based upon your own bonds, basically power of friendship magic, Primal magic is based upon natural bonds, like the connection between fire and wood or water and air, Divine magic is based upon collective faith, and Arcane magic is based on subverting and corrupting the bonds between others.

I think Trazyn's irreverent, Deadpool-esque personality works perfectly in the context of what he is. People hate him for being immersion-breaking and fucking up the tone of the setting, but given that as one of the few high-level Necrons who's still more or less in complete possession of all his faculties, he's so powerful he can actually afford not to take things seriously. Him and the Orks both work as comic relief from different angles. The orks because they're so absurdly violent that they're perfectly adapted to a hostile universe, Trazyn because he's so absurdly powerful that the universe is profoundly inadequate to him.

Lore doesn't really matter in the whole female Space Marines/Custodes debate. What is really important is that the Imperium's elite troops being sex-segregated religious orders helps to reinforce the theocratic fuedalism of the faction. Fem-marines are not bad because they fuck with the lore, they are bad because they fuck with the entire identity of the setting's primary faction.
>>
>>96683091
>. As far back as Damocles the Imperium committed 5 companies of Space Marines and multiple Titan Legions,

The only notable thing about that is the presence of the titans. You don't normally see multiple legions running with an otherwise small crusade.

>>
>>96694716
There's roughly one Space Marine for every planet in the Imperium and single Space Marines are noted to be capable of quelling entire rebellions by themselves. If 500 Space Marines are being sent in any conflict, it's a sign things are fairly major. And the Titan Legions reinforce that.

It's finally here!

>what is curseborne?
Curseborne is the newest Onyx Path Publishing TTRPG on dark urban fantasy genre. It's about being unapologetic monsters in a world where being monstrous is the least of your worries. In Curseborne, you play as Accursed, descendants of monstrous Lineages lurking in a modern world that closely resembles our own. You rebel against the ancient feuds between these entwined families, as well as against the web of curses that bind you, while fending off inhuman antagonists
seeking to claim β€” or reclaim β€” your power.

It's probably not you but I don't think it's too bad on that front. A lot of the book is in-character (which I don't love) so there are different characters talking so there isn't a single voice but I think they're playing towards a lot of the same themes.

>>96694811
Neither. There isn't a masquerade and the supernatural is more out in the open but it's not a fully accepted fact of life where everyone gets along. There is a cultural shift towards belief in the supernatural, and people tend to be much more superstitious, but it's not absolute and there are plenty of things that do not want you to know they're there. There might be an openly practicing witch and she might offer her services, and her customers might think she's supernatural, and people aren't likely to to call you insane for believing it, but not everyone is going to immediately go "ah, yes, witches are real". I think it's hitting a good balance between hidden dark corners without everything being a secret society, and also having enough difference from our world without feeling like it's a full on fantasy world.
>>
>>96694982
Honestly, it feels completely toothless and out of shape. The art doesn't help.

Writing General: 'library' edition

Welcome to /wg/, the thread for all /tg/ related writing. Whether you're plotting your campaign, trying to come up with a character backstory, or just trying to write some setting fluff, this is the place to post it. You don't even have a campaign, just an idea you want to develop? You're welcome here. While the rest of /tg/ is arguing over monstergirl mating and which way rivers are supposed to flow, we're here to help you turn your thoughts into an actual finished product.

As the successor to the Storythreads, we're also open to /tg/ related fanfiction (D&D, Warhammer, Battletech, whatever). In fact, if you've written any vaguely /tg/-related short stories, you can try them out here. We also have flash-fiction challenges from time to time.

There's a discord for writers here
https://discord.gg/6AwKHGF

The previous thread can still be found in the archive here

And finally an archive of /tg/ fiction can be found here:

I visited the library often this year while unemployed. but I'm about to be shackled again so that gets harder to do.
I have three bookshelves I share, latest find is Welcome to the Monkey House. I'm currently reading All Quiet on the Western Front, The Crystal Shard, and last book I bought for full price was Monalisa Overdrive since it's impossible to borrow, looking forward to starting that next once one or both of the current ones are done. I have a hard time chewing on only one story at a time.
>>
>>96688538
>does anyone have tips for increasing speed while also maintaining comprehension?
Well, if anyone ever invents time travel you could go back a couple of decades and make yourself read more as a small child. That's definitely crucial. Although I suppose if time travel existed you would already have done that and we wouldn't be having this conversation.

Honestly, like so many skills the key is just repetition. Don't overthink it, don't confuse things with fancy techniques. Just find things you enjoy reading and let yourself pick it up naturally by just immersing yourself in it.

That said, if you have undiagnosed dyslexia or something like that, there are specialised fonts that can help. It also sometimes helps to get your eyes tested; if your vision is a little off it might be forcing your brain to do a bit of extra processing to work out what the words say. It's quite easy to have vision that's good enough to get by in day to day life but could still be improved with glasses. (likewise, if you already have glasses your proscription might be a little off). I mean, it's probably not that, but it's worth checking.

All Quiet On The Western Front is one of those books I've always meant to read but never got around to. Is it any good?

If it was a one page rpg, you would be using very generalist rules to emulate towergirls. You wouldnt need to detail every princess, just the process of rescuing or interacting with them.

He's from FF5, and is caught in a dimensional portal at the end. I think his next appearance is FF8, where he gets Odin's sword, but he seems to have already traveled a bit after that. No idea on any strict timeline.

For Dwarves I just try to make Tolkien sounding names. Thoroun, Snoli, Thuriz, Nilni, Thanuz, Fundig, Boriz, etc. Then I give them a patronymic surname, ban (son of), bar (daughter of), or fro (wife of) something or other. So you could have Thoroun ban Thanuz, and his wife might be Umili fro Thoroun. And they might add their clan name to that. And this full name would be their secret name only fellow dwarves know, and other races would know only their first name and a nickname. So Thoroun might be Thoroun ban Thanuz Nainazar to dwarves, but Thoroun Steeltoe to humans

It is one reason for why the Solaroids aren't good splat foils to Solars.
The writers are writing the splats as characters instead of classes or castes; which may explain Exigents.

Abyssals whitewash their future.
While Infernals whitewash the past.
And 3e!Infernals replace them as "good guys with bad reputation".
>>
>>96695287
>They need to lean harder into being theoir own distinct things.
Why?
They are all Solars.
They reflect each other:
>The passinate hero
>The nihilist hero
>The fallen hero
>>
>>96695345
I just feel that Solars are easily able to be all three and the Abyssals and Infernals should lean harder into being more of Death and of Hell instead.
>>
>>96695345
Not really, it was vanilla Solars who committed those atrocities during the first age.
>>
>>96695369
Yeah they all have different powers accentuating their themes Abyssals having powers that bring death to all they don't grow things they destroy.
While Infernals likewise corrupt creation.
>>96695380
They did just like how Solars also murder.
So Abyssals and Infernals are exaggerated caricatures of those extremes.

Summon the clans, inform the guilds, and pop the casks, it's dwarf time.

Dwarves don't natively smoke a pipe, that's an imported surface dweller thing.
They do smoke certain minerals though. Cracked-rock that make them obsessive and compulsive, usually channeled into an artisanal pursuit for weeks at a time, locked away in their workshop, refusing to eat or bathe or comb their beards.
