The new slimmed down models actually look like decent fantasy paladins and are entirely serviceable, with some even possessing hints of SOVL, so there's not much to write home about. Thankfully the era of those embarrassing sigmarine monstrosities is long over.

What's up with the big crossbow in the State Missile Trooper box? I thought maybe it was a crank or something to load the crossbow, but looking at it more it looks like a multishoot crossbow of something.

Sounds miserable, but it looks great and surely the effort makes it that much sweeter in the end. I don't have the patience for that so I just hand draw a reference pic in crayon and give it to my wife, then she creates a digital version on her computer and prints it for me.

Thanks! Very cool looking trio as well, I quite like the metal/mud contrast. I usually also do something like this, but in this case specifically I ended up having to work with this dark elf plastic banner. It's a fun challenge if nothing else.

What can you do to make bandit encounters more immersive and interesting than the old ambush-fight shtick?
10 replies and 1 image omitted. Click here to view.
>>
>>97349486
The bandits aren't as vicious as rumoured and have their own goals and problems.
The bandits are arguing amongst themselves about an internal matter (breach of their code, missing gold, etc) and draft PCs in as neutral arbiters/jury (in return for letting them go unharmed)
Bandits are already dealing with a third party
Bandits are hunting a monster (even though they're bad guys they don't want a chaos spawn roaming the woods)
Bandits are awkwardly babysitting a missing child: they don't hurt kids usually and don't know how to get this one home without endangering themselves
Bandits are actually religious adherents demanding tithe with force: they've been misled by a devil masquerading as a saint
Bandits are scavengers who lure a large monster towards travellers and then gather dropped treasure from those who flee (or the dead)
Bandit has a personal link to a PC (works well with veterans)
Bandits aren't ambushers: they've taken over a mountain pass keep or fortified bridge. It'd be a siege to drive them out.

I'm assuming Generic Medieval Setting (TM) here.
>The party come across the ransacked caravan. Throats cut, boxes broken open, and a hasty trail leading off in the forest nearby. You listen closely to hear laughter and lots of noise which means lots of men.
>The GM hands the party's scout a note. 'You see them well before they can spot you. Six men you count. Spears and crossbows. Poorly hidden behind the birch trees up ahead.' And let the party ambush the ambushers
>You round the bend to see a large log blocking the trail/road. Near the log are three men dressed in haphazard armor. They are in the process of hanging the third of three men from a nearby tree. (The men doing the hanging are the Reeve and his company. The hanging men are bandits)
> A beggar on the road with a sickly boy. He'll ask for more than the party are willing to give. He'll hold the party up with a shaky hand and crossbow after the party refuse to give more.
>The bandits are the government. You've reached a toll bridge. The footmen demand silver. If you give it too earnestly, they'll also demand to search the goods for "contraband". One of the footmen says he'll wave the fee if the pretty woman gives him a good kiss (something slimy will get everyone prickly). They'll ask for a donation to "ignore" the "contraband" they found among you. (optional twist: you notice that the waffenrock they are wearing are a little too dirty and a little too bloody. They aren't the baron's men after all.. just pretending to be!)

>>97352593
Solid ideas here.
>>
>>97349486
It's not an ambush. These bandits are confident. This is their highway, or their bridge, or something else of that nature. They're here to collect their toll, and they're not above beating it out of you.

I get why people dislike it but the "once per turn (army)" stuff is there to discourage people from taking multiple of a unit and not have constant spam lists. They can definitely get away with not having that for weaker effects but I'm not sure how else they can write the rules to minimize that kind of thing from happening, since they clearly aren't interested in hotfixing with active regular updates to rules. The other option would be 40k's "rule of 3" which I don't love either because while spam lists suck, 3 unit max is too limiting and you can have more than 3 low points units and not have it be a spam list.

>wow, people really love gotrek and felix we've gotta do more with this slayer concept.
>lets make a whole faction that' just slayers, people will eat that shit up
GW found out the hard way that there are concepts that work well and are cool for characters, that dont' work for entire factions. A unit of slayers can be cool, there's nothing cool about an army that's only naked dwarves. Berserkers are cool when you contrast them to dudes wearing heavy armor. When it's all just berserkers with no armor, they all look weak and lame.

>gm wants to port an old 1e game to either 2e or savage worlds pf
I have the feeling, because years ago I tried, this is going to suck. It's been years since I checked 2e but I don't think a lightning fist, metal skinned, super fast (120ft/move), super jump high and far, trip monster with 8 AoO human monk with almost no magic items (because GM doesn't use them) can be replicated in any of those games. I dunno why he doesn't just make a new game with a new plot

Idk the impression I got from Malfoy (until book 5 at least) was more that his family just said a bunch of things and the kid picked it up more than he actually meant anything. The little perspective you do get on him usually isn't making him out to be quite so racist all the time but perhaps maybe Rowling was just surprisingly subtle over it.

yes, it's unironically canon that that wizards shat themselves in public

I've never been able to find a system with space combat I like, so I'm thinking about a sci-fi setting where "space is boring" i.e. all the adventures happen on planets/at human scale.
Aside from "space war is all computers, you either have the capability to punch through enemy pickets or instantly die when you try" is there anything else I could do to help establish this sort of convention?
>>
On the subject of Traveller, how do (you) feel about ansibles?
Do you prefer your settings having inconvenient (ie. "slow") communication? Or instant transfer of information regardless of distance?
>>
I've had an idea for a more space oriented cyberpunk game brewing for a while, though I'm reminded now that 2300 exists and while I'm not super familiar with traveller that also seems like an option. So what is trav like?

Consider this:
They cut the entire original approved movies list, just because. Took monumental edit war and eventually a DDoS to make them reconsider.
So considerting the level of damage anticipated and how it ended, I say it's workable.
2d4 meanwhile started out as 1:1 repository, but then the dumb fuck who set it up went with a machete across the pages, slashing whatever he felt like it, and openly saying that fuck keeping old shit, time to update.
Which is why 2d4 is now run by Korean spam bots, I guess
