I kind of like the thought of northern Italian dwarves. Think renaissance Italy but instead of city states you have dwarf holds. Medicis banking system is just the interhold banking clan now expanding to accept human deposits/accounts and this break in traditional exclusion causes a chain of events that leads to dwarfs now being in every major city across the continent.
