Good parenting. I've taught my son to play Xenos rampant and other games from Daniel Mersey. I think they're easier to teach with fewer things to memorize, even compared to older editions of 40k.

People living in good times use dystopian fiction as a thrilling form of escape. They also tend to lean towards brighter colours.

People living in dystopias tend towards noblebright themes to escape the harshness of life, while favouring dull colours.

Compare the colours of cars and clothes of now with the 90s.

>Using artillery to snipe characters and no Eternal Warrior (besides Chaos 3.5) drains some of the thematics out of the game.
Wrong.

"Independent characters can only be chosen as targets if they are more than 6" away from any other viable target unit or if they are the closest target at short range (up to 12"). Otherwise you can't shoot at them."
pg. 75

And then of course there's the fact that independent characters could join units.

Nobody on this board knows the rules when they argue about older editions.

I have a silly question as newcomer: Do you assemble full command set for every unit you field, or how do you decide on that? Here I am sitting on 10 marauder horsemen and I was thinking of having 2 units of five for flexibility, and I really don't know whether each 5 really needs champ, bannerman and musician considering they will harass enemy and die rather easily. I'm not waac fag or anything, but I'm curious of how people do it.
>>
>>97354229
I think that depends very much on the context of both the army and how you're dividing your points. I'm also still a newguy, but I think in the case of cavalry you might want to field it in a single unit? I haven't looked that deep into the rules for cavalry, but I'd imagine for a powerful cavalry charge and staying power you might want to keep them together. A champion, musician and banner could in that case help out, especially if you're going to be using these dudes as your main offensive capability.

To give an example of when I decided not to use a command set:
With my Empire force I get to work with detachment rules, so I gave my main regiment of buffed up halbs two blocks of 10 missile troops as support. I don't expect them to get into melee (although that might still happen), and as two detachments for a buffed up regiment I opted for maximising firepower over giving those small blocks some very minor bonuses in the grand scheme of things.
>>
>>97354229
For me I ask myself "is it important this unit wins its combats, and especially the combats that might be close?"

If the answer is yes I build command models.

Example: I want my block of 15 gors in combats and I want them winning so I build command for the extra combat resolution.

I dont care if my ungors with bows with a melee and dont ever expect them to, so I skip command for them
>>
>>97354229
Champion and musician are usually good to have on almost every unit. Champ especially is very valuable because of the challenge mechanic.

Banners are not worth putting on units units whose role is to slow down and/or harass the enemy. Your enemy gets 50pts for every banner he/she captures so having a banner on a unit of 5 marauder horsemen almost doubles the point you give when they eventually die.
>>
>>97354229
Modelwise yes, because I like the look of it. But in terms of rules I wouldn't take banners for chaff or horsemen. The extra CR isn't going to help them in any meaningful way (unless I'm specifically going for some kind of magic banner) and when they inevitably do get killed they won't give out free points like candy. The musician is good on everyone imo.

Thread dedicated to Sci-Fi based discussion. 40k need not apply. [\spoiler]

How goes your sci-fi setting, anon? I am currently running a Traveller game in a homebrew setting, and am getting lost in the sauce of stellar physics.

I definitely prefer the thought of a information network time gated by jump mechanics. It can create some very interesting scenarios, and it can give players an actual sort of soft currency of exchanging news when they hit out of the way spots that aren't on the major trade paths
>>
I've been interested in running Stars Without Number in a space frontier like Star Trek TOS
>>
>>97352667
Here are my rules

1. FTL travel is only possible with a real sentient person controlling the ship. Don't try brain in a jar, it backfires.

2. FTL communication inside of a solar system is possible, but only through some fairly expensive infrastructure.

3. The vast, vast majority of information is carried by courier ships who must make the FTL travel by themselves.

4. There is instant FTL galaxy-wide communications available, but only the big giant ancient asshole alien empire knows how to do it, and only those people extremely, extremely high up get to use it. This typically takes the form of pre-recorded video messages. A live holo-link with a member of the Imperial Court means someone on the other side of the call really fucked up. Humans (aka players) have access to this tech, but can only send very simple text messages, like telegrams, can be vulnerable to distortion, it's not reliable.

I like the feeling of Traveller "Age of Sail" communication, but I also want to leave myself open to other stuff.

I've always considered hags and goblins related somehow. Warty green skin, hooked nose, lives in the forest.

You know how hags always want people's children? They never really mention what happens to those..
>>
>>97353498
For me, they're far too different. Hags are monstrous women that do black magic and eat children. Goblins are sneaky, selfish, horrible fae-types that like causing mischief, that take children to turn them into goblins. Which would then mean the two are at odds in that regard.

After playing both the original Shandalar and the 2016 update version I've come to the conclusion that magic was just more fun in 1995 when it was more loose and relaxed. The kinds of decks you go up against in the 2016 version are so much more ruthless about shutting down every play you make that the only way to compete is to be an even more obnoxious dickhead and make sure they never get a chance to do anything. Every victory was bitter and spiteful in a way that I never felt with the older simpler Magic cards.

>Post up the army list itself? I'm curious to see what it's like with stats and such, and what you're taking.
Certainly! It's the 2e Dark Eldar fandex by "Grim Squeaker" which tells me nothing, but it's built off the 5e+ dark eldar army list, I included a screenshot of the cover for reference.

Dark Eldar Fandex list 1500 points.

Characters:
Archon: 174
Strategy Rating 4.
Splinter Pistol, Frag Grenades, Blind Grenades, Plasma Grenades, Agonizer, Poisoned Blade.

Dark Eldar Combat Drugs:
Painbringer: +1 T

Wargear Cards:

>>97345752
My rationale is to bundle the Blaster/Splitercannon squads in a pair of raiders and push them up the table to contest and harrass the shit out of things, while the dark lance squad hangs back to snipe heavier shit. Archon and incubi are in the last raider and the Talos will act as a counter attack force where ever I get bogged down by the enemy. Ravager provides highly mobile anti armour/anti terminator/meganob platform. And hopefully, this gets me a win, but the ultimate is to see how fun this particular fandex is.
>>
>>97346036
>1500 points
And what would you field with 500 points?
>>
>>97347897
I'd take the archon again, stripped down of wargear and shit, he'd be there to agonise something to death. I'd take a raider squad, but drop one of the upgrades on the skimmer for points, a smaller warrior squad to sneak around for some opportunity plays. List would look like this...

Dark Eldar 500 points.

Characters:
Archon: 99
Splinter pistol, Agoniser, ghostplate armour, plasma and frag grenades.

Squads:
Kabalite Warriors: 176
7 warriors with Splinter Rifles and frag grenades, 1 warrior with Blaster and frag grenades, 1 warrior with Splinter Cannon and frag grenades. Sybrabite with Splinter Rifle and frag grenades.

Kabalite Warriors: 98
3 warriors with Splinter Rifles and frag grenades, 1 warrior with Blaster and frag grenades, Syrabite with Splinter Rifle and frag grenades.

News from the front, played the trial game with the new deldar fandex and was not impressed, from the anemic character selection, to the missing rules reference and never elaborated, it just made for a particularly unfun experience. Though on a positive note the armoury was well composed, using my weapons available to me really did sell what they're supposed to be. The darklight guns(dark lance and blaster) were the high impact anti-armour/heavy infantry pieces they're supposed to be, the splinter weapons are a good high volume of fire and moderate and reliable damage like they should be, disintegrator cannons on my raiders were great, the 2 sustained fire dice for them is a damn good feel.

Next week will see me using the Codex Commoraghii fandex from 2008, this one was written off of the 3e army list and cleaves closer to 2e design principles, so maybe this will feel better than this 5e+ derived fandex I used today, the week after that see's me using the oldest of the bunch, a fandex written in 2000, still with 2e fresh in mind. From these games I'll determine either the list most aligned with what I want out of dark eldar in 2e or a foundation for me to iterate my own idea of what they should be.

Neither.
I prefer scattering around fairytale style talking animals; I don't tend to explain them, but at a push they'd be forest spirits or a manifest genius loci, or the result of magical tampering.

being a cat is no excuse to not answer a court summons, especially since it is known that the cat knows how to speak and thus presumably listen to a reading of the court summons.

If you are going to be building all the stuff for the setting anyway I'd say GURPS. Especially since you can use both tactical and range band rules from Spaceships as needed.

If you want do it in Mekton this is probably the best starting point

The Hobbit was published in 1937. Gnomes are folklore inventions from centuries ago. I think gnomes have endured for far longer. Regardless, the point is that trying to use gnomes to make them fit into Tolkien-inspired races is getting them backwards. They should be the original ones, older and more magical, no the other way around.

Fuck those guys.
They are all gay, and they fuck the balance when you're the only guy with a planeswalker.
I know, because I was that guy; got all my mates to go for the promotional free deck; everything was fine 'til I got a Gideon.
It whacks the game balance; I drew that fucker and my mates povo decks crumbled.
The mechanic is clearly a bolt-on, poorly balanced and poorly thought out.
Needless to say, everybody got bummed out and stopped playing.

Because planeswalker cards don't just suck conceptually, they suck the fun out of the game, and that's worse.

But I digress.
I have forsaken TCG's; they are of the devil.
>>
>>97349059
I actually don't hate planeswalkers from a mechanical standpoint, even if I think it's pretty unnecessary. They have done, and would do fine, as legendary creature cards.

My beef is that the shift in portraying a wide cast of new planeswalkers as main characters was part of some very bad story decisions. We kind of saw two major sides of Magic before the Mending:
>Planeswalkers as part of the conflict with Phyrexia, surrounding the life of Urza
>The exploration of worlds where Planeswalkers are either wholly absent, or are more important for the background of the worlds that things are happening in, rather than the main focus characters
What we moved on to is:
>"No, guys, we're totally not trying to capitalize on superhero team tropes right now. Who cares about the integrity of lore for the worlds we're visiting? It's all about the characters we can't write well! They're planeswalkers like you, so we want to lean into them, but we're losing faith in story's ability to be sold, so we're going to drop the ball right after we make this huge change in how we market the game!"
