So, imagine for a second that a GM is pitching you a sci-fi game to play in soon. The setting is "like StarCraft," the rules system is a new one to you (Flex D6 if it's essential you know), and the general flow of the game is described as flying a small ship around and going on planet side adventures in the face of an approaching disaster.
What do you need to know, or want to know, ahead of time? What would be useful to you practically, creatively, etc? Do you want a session zero?
>>
>>97250918
>session zero
Yes, but has to be setting description, group character creation and a short encounter to get everyone on board.
>need to know
Rules to the game ideally on a quick reference sheet or short 4 page thing.
>want to know
Scifi sort, space opera, fantastical, very soft, a bit more technical, are the people I'm playing with part of a regular group or new?
>useful
Elevator pitch for the setting, blurbs for the space area, how space travel works, what themes we're aiming at, how character mortality works.
>>

>Setting
Basically late medieval to early Renaissance Europe
>Magic
Not really available to players, expect in the form of extremely rare high level magical weapons and items. BBEG should possess magic abilities
>Player characters
European presenting male fighters only, maximum one low level hedge wizard or shaman
>Races
All NPCs and PC should be human, finding a non-human village like elves should be extremely rare, unlikely, and magical experience

This one I've been thinking alot:
Low fantasy early modernity but there is no gunpowder: pike warfare, swordsmanship and archery dominate and are developed to new levels.
The longsword never goes out of fashion and becomes something akin to what the katana was to the japanese.
Set in a northern confederacy, a lot of conflict is settled locally by private wars, judicial combat and duels.

>Space opera setting. Upkeep of individual ships should be unusual for the common person. A vast network of interplanetary spacelines should exist
>Magic is as natural as breathing. not everyone should be supremely strong and of course no universe breaking reality benders. Space gods should exist
>The who thing should lead characters to be very specialized. Maybe based on one to two backgrounds per player, being their sort of classes.
>Players should be able to play whatever species of the setting they want. As long as it is able to communicate with the group and interact with the world in meaningful ways
I dislike the rigidity of dnd classes, I would like for everything to be way more open to player choice. Maybe even make the magic system free form, I've heard Macchiato Monsters does it for example. Other than that no clue. Shouldn't be too crunchy but also not too rules light. As long as I don't write it this system will never exist. Problem is I only ever played 5e and got no clue where to even start.

I've been told the standard D&D character is now a human female fighter and the fighter section has had gender neutral language replaced with she and her to accommodate the fandom
Do all the boys who play really just want to be girls? How do we make them want to not be fighters or humans? Why aren't tieflings the most popular?

>never reasoned with
Doesn't Bilbo manage to reason with Smaug at least semi-successfully? Yes he considers any mortal affairs totally beneath him but he does have a huge ego and is vulnerable to bargaining and especially flattery. I read the book a long time ago so I can't promise I'm not misremembering.

And yes of course Smaug does quickly see through the flattery but that's because Bilbo actually was trying to steal from him.
>>
>>97253010
He misleads him, very briefly as you described, and then Smaug quickly sorties out, tries to find and kill the dwarves, fails to find them and so burns or eats most of their ponies so they can't escape the Lonely Mountain, and then flies off to Laketown just to fuck shit up, intending to return and root them out and torture them to death immediately after. The dorfs and Bilbo would've been completely fucked if there wasn't Deux Ex Machina Man, descendant of the King of Dale, with a never-before-mentioned Super Special Magic Macguffin Arrow, who talked to a fucking bird to learn Smaug's weakpoint and then was lucky enough to land a perfect instakill shot with said arrow. Weakest part of an otherwise perfect story. I don't think Tolkien wrote himself into a corner, I think he just wanted to find some way to involve Men in the Battle of the Five Armies, as if a mountain full of fucking gold wasn't motivation enough.
But TLDR no, he doesn't reason with Smaug at all, and if he hadn't had the ring during their brief exchange, he'd have been a pile of ashes.
>>
>>97253085
It's true that Bilbo only survives through remaining unseen and Smaug would have gladly killed him if given the opportunity, but my point is that dragons, especially those lesser than Smaug, aren't stupid and could respect the power of dangerous rivals and negotiate, at least until they found a way to take the said power for themselves.

Thread #02 Lean Winter on the Tundra
Previous Thread: >>97090196

Welcome to /un0/, an RP thread for playing a World of Darkness/Chronicles of Darkness Hunter. For any OOC questions about WoD/CofD, check the official general. >>97224887

Rules:
>We are acephale. There is no storyteller, we are not a quest.
>This thread is based primarily but not exclusively in the nWoD/CofD game Hunter: the Vigil. However, Vigil is defined by being highly setting agnostic, with a system for creating entirely custom monsters that do not exist in other WoD/CofD games. Thus, you have significant freedom in what you want to play and what you want to hunt. Feel free to play a member of the Society of Leopold, or a member of the Lucifuge hot on the tail of a Lasombra.
>Namefagging is encouraged but by no means mandatory.
>Keep in mind that even highly experienced Hunters typically only have fractured pieces of the puzzle, and every table has their own canon. The night is dark and full of misinformation.
>/un0/ is conceived of as an experimental end to end encrypted program that is very hard to compromise, retains very little data and purges that data regularly. Please play an actual Hunter.
>Spoiler any OOC discussion.

Happy hunting.
Unless this thread somehow takes off like a rocket, this will be the last un0 thread for the foreseeable future. Towards the end of the thread, please give your feedback in regard to these shorter, limited run RP threads.

It's not dogma, it's the truth, not all my brothers feel the same way by the way, so don't mix me and my beliefs in with my duty as a Hunter. Some of them arent even Christian, the Maltese Cross is that of firefighters, mit goes beyond just Christianity. Our physical existence doesn't matter, the most grievous wound to our body or mind does nothing to our soul. It's not our bodies that will leave this world of darkness.

Demon ARE real! You've got me there. I've had to slay more than a few myself. Fae are just fallen angels but might as well work on the same principals. Bound by words, wounded by iron, etc. Demons are the only real "outside threat" so you've got me there. But even then, demons are not typical Hunter targets, it's mostly ghosts & vampires, & werewolves, & monsters.
>>
>>97255152
I'm fine with them as long as they don't do anything stupid and don't question my methods.

>>97255909

When the power of got swept through Heaven during the Rebellion it emptied a third of Heaven. Not all who were cast out remained loyal to Lucifer. These became the Fae & the pagan gods

Do you prefer systems with a strict class-based martial/caster division or classless systems that allow anyone to dip into anything at the cost of never being great at it?

>How much time do you spend explaining to your players your design philosophy?
I just take a classless system, but write up a handful of optional archetypes/templates to pick, or if a player isn't interested in any templates, then I write up a short list of limits and requirements for players to follow. I also include a brief explanation of the premise of the campaign, so players know what to expect and build their characters accordingly. During character advancement or "level-ups", I offer optional trait packages, or allow players to pick their own individual traits within certain simple yet well-defined guidelines. If players have any questions, then I'm glad to give further elaborations. These are things that every good GM should be doing anyways.
>Have you never had a player complain or argue with you about why the class you built should work differently?
Certainly. I often get requests from players to swap out an ability for a class, or for permission to break a certain limit to achieve a particular concept that makes sense in the setting. Classless systems make these sorts of changes easy, since classless systems often have a clear metric for defining the "value" of different character options, and give warnings or reassurance about what combinations might break or might not the game. Class-based systems are rarely so clear-cut, and are much easier to break by trying to modify, because there are rarely such guidelines.

Trench Raiding With The Lads Edition

>What is Trench Crusade?
An alternate weird history 28mm/32mm tabletop skirmish game still in a pre-release playtesting phase but with the full release slated for this year. Based on the art and lore of Mike Franchina, whose illustrations you may have seen floating around on /tg/ for a several years now, and designed by Tuomas Pirinen, one of the original creators of Mordheim. It's grimdark, it's visceral, it's awesome, and it's very Blanchitsu.

>What Trench Crusade is not
TC not an excuse for you to discuss IRL religion, history that didn't occur in the game, culture war shit, or discord bullshit on /tg/. Keep it on topic.

>What's the QRD on the background?
The Knights Templar turned heretic and opened the Gates of Hell when they took Jerusalem during the First Crusade. Over 800 years later the war is still ongoing as technology has developed to a pseudo diesel-punk WW1 standard and a third of Humanity has sided with the Infernal Princes.

Whenever you go to stores, look around for random bullshit that you can just buy and turn into terrain. Electrical switch boxes, birdhouses, pringles cans, pvc pipes, shipping tubes, toy playsets, a container of peanuts that looks vaguely fuel tank shaped, etc. You'd be surprised how many of these items can be turned into nice terrain pieces if you just paint them, texture them and glue random shit on like straws, foam bricks, 3D printed doors and windows, corrugated paper, cardstock shingles, etc.
>>
>>97252359
Good advice. For example, I have a nice crenellated guard tower I picked up at Michael's for $5, in the birdhouse isle. :)

I feel like this edition has alot of objectively bad things about it and is absolutely where the alot of worst qualities of current editions showed up. But I feel like I prefer playing this edition compared to a lot of previous editions and 10th edition. Its a weird transitional period where there's still a lot of the old units that haven't been legended yet while still having the fucking Primaris lot. Its strange but I don't feel like I'm missing out on much staying on this edition and playing with friends casually instead of going back to playing the current edition.
