Everyone I know who watches Fatt Coville videos is a fucking terrible GM. I've never fully watched one and I am widely considered the best GM out of all 3 groups I'm part of. I am regularly requested to run campaigns. People borderline fall asleep in the games others run. There's also no tension because they know that these Coville acolytes will fudge rolls until all PCs survive the battle.

If you're a good GM, it's an inmate talent you can hone over time. You're born that way. If you aren't, then no amount of shitty advice is going to make up for your lack of talent. It just is what it is. This idea that everyone should "try" DMing is retarded. The idea that anyone can be good at it? lolno. Its like some fat divorced on who suddenly decides he's gonna become a famous author. Fat chance. Most people fucking suck at GMing. Hell, most of them suck at playing, but at least in that case the game depends less on them.

>Still can't help but feel like you are fooling yourselves with the dice rolling to begin with if you're just not gonna listen to it.
You're an extremist retard who's acting like every single roll is going to be fudged. They won't. It's another tool in the GM's toolkit.
>>
>>97232246
I dont think that's quite it. It's more that good GMs are more likely to go looking for advice and tips even though they already do things well. Bad GMs just want validation.

So you wind up with 'advice' videos that aren't advice, just some gimmick about why you'll totes get validation if you, say, throw out your combat grid. This, incidentally, just so happens to be less effort for the GM.

>If you fuck with the numbers to make encounters go the way you want then sooner or later one or more of the players are going to notice the pattern of inconsistencies.
Yes, I've been there as a player before and this is because I'm an autist that recognizes patterns. But,
>At which point they will never trust you as the GM again
Lolno. The GM has a million ways to "cheat". We're sitting under his roof, at his table, playing a game he's put most of the effort into organizing, and the rules explicitly allow him to do whatever he wants. He wants us to have a good time, we want him to have a good time, and we trust eachother's good intentions with the tools we have rather than expecting the GM will never fudge rolls, which is a stupid thing to single out.

Maybe your group is different and they'll all get turbo butthurt if they think the DM isn't "playing fair" and lets them survive a series of unfortunate rolls or keeps the big bad from dying before he got a turn. If so you have my condolences, but not everyone's group is as cursed as yours.
>>
>>97232246
You're still jealous of Matt Coville, OP? You'll never be as popular as him and get money by GMing, get over It. People just don't like your advice.

So D&D players in the old days were coming into it from fantasy novels, right?

It's just mad to think: the majority of new players today probably haven't even read The Lord of the Rings. They've watched movies and played video games.

Not wank, just observation.
Yes, Luke was very powerful in the EU, but he was also an extreme outlier. And I've never seen any proof that Palpatine was stronger than Sion, let along monsters like Vitiate and Nihilus. Sheev never won a thing through strength, it was always manipulation and politics.

And Luke being 'one of the most powerful Jedi' doesnt address the other assertion that the Jedi and Sith lost great amounts of knowledge and technique over the millennia due to wiping each other out over and over again. Just compare Palpatine's Empire and SWTOR's Empire. They were both technological innovators, yes, but the SWTOR Empire was far more advanced in actual Sith magic and techniques because it actually had a core of Sith researchers and academics instead of one Emperor and his lapdog. Hell Luke had to rebuild everything from scratch -by himself- after ROTJ because of this trend.
>>
>>97248228
We never see Palpatine doing anything on level with Vitiate in terms of raw dark side power. His primary talent is a combination of foresight, ability to hide his presence, and just being an expert manipulator. Vitiate on the other hand had mastered essence transfer (something Palpatine sought to do but never quite managed), could corrupt and brainwash some of the most powerful Jedi of the time, and drive an entire world's population to madness and drain their lifeforce.
Granted, Vitiate is kind of cheating, as most of his power comes from tricking a 1000 other Sith lords into participating in a ritual where he drained their souls to empower himself. Palpatine is most likely stronger than than pre-ritual Tenebrae/Vitiate. Also, while Palpatine doesn't do anything as flashy, his ability to predict the future was actually really good and shouldn't be understated (even if he failed to see Vader turning on him).

Recently I was thinking about alternative combat systems.

I remember someone talking about instead of HP the payer has a Jenga tower and he needs to remove peaces once hit, the skill is to remove peaces without the tower collapsing

So I started thinking.
For example what if the combat somehow involves cups and balls?

Instead of a D20+modifier nonsense why not change it up? Why not give a player 10 balls or legos or whatever and to win an encounter the player needs to land 2 balls in 1 cup?

There can be variants of this like a super hard encounter demands the player lands all 10 balls or what about reducing the size of the cup with the difficulty of combat?

What if we implement a fate system from Talisman for the players? What if legendary bosses have something like that for themselves? And can negate the players victory?

What if different monsters use different "balls" like for example some bone golems will be you throwing legos into cups and zombies are aluminum balls while naga can be gummy bears? That actually makes the monster feel different and not a copy pasted set of numbers. Also the different aerodynamics of these "balls" are part of the fun.

>Critical failure is only a thing in attack rolls
Which is also a big issue since I've never met a target shooter who will miss a point blank shot 5% of the time.
But the issue is that it's hard to even get a +9 in 3.5e on things you're good at unless you fully minmax for it.
>>
>>97248229
Target shooting isn't really an attack, attacks are resolved during combat. Critical failure is supposed to model the chaotic nature of combat. IRL combat statics show 20-30% hit rate. 5% is nothing.
In 3.5 you can have a +7 in a class skill without min maxing at lvl 1. That becomes a +9 in what? Two levels? Pls stop embarrassing yourself.
>>
>>97248464
>Target shooting isn't really an attack
Yes it is.
>Critical failure is supposed to model the chaotic nature of combat.
Nothing in the PHB says this. In fact, it's quite against it as you can suffer critical failures outside of combat such as on saving throws, when activating magic items, and when trying to erase magic writing for some reason.
>IRL combat statics show 20-30% hit rate
Do you mean statistics, retard? Eitherway it's irrelevant.
>In 3.5 you can have a +7 in a class skill without min maxing at lvl 1.
That would require you to be minmaxed, actually, and means you will fail average difficult tasks 1 in every 10 times. And that's putting aside how "class skills" means you can't create most real world people. It's a DC 15 check to walk across a 2x4 btw. Every construction worker I know would have to be a high level rogue because they don't go plummeting off scaffolding constantly.

You could set it as a static number, as like a difficulty slider.
You could even have it change depending on the outcome or scenes/rolls, kinda like mythic's chaos factor
>>
>>97241929
Roll under and static DC games make it easier, but if you want to stick with varying DCs it might be easier if you pick one DC each for easy/average/hard rolls and use those unless you have a really good reason to adjust further

You can buy the entire Dragonbane box (including full rulebook, dice, standees and solo rules) for cheap. Why I recommend it to players starting out solo is
1. Because of what I said about and
2. Because when I too was new to solo gaming I thought it was very easy to get into it with this game. The solo dungeon crawling that is included is hand-holdy enough to get you going but also it gives you the reigns to start being creative and handle it "on your own". It's really neat on-boarding, in my opinion

Wanted to talk about advice on GMing, settings you prefer, and styles or issues you as a GM have. I generally tend to prefer dark fantasy or sci-fi settings rather than trying something a little different.

I also tend to have a style, depends on the system though, where i have a combat heavy session or two and then a more intrigue/exploration focused session. I have been working on how to better balance games I run, but trying to tie that to timing a game session gets tricky at times.

Another issue I noticed is that puzzle solving or investigative games can be a lot harder for a player to get into the mindset for than the dm. It is easy to think everything you planned makes sense when you thought it out in your head but the players might not have the same line of thought.

OP here. The style thing is something I am trying to correct more so than anything else. While I leave thing open ended, I have noticed that the set ups tend to favor either combat or more thinking outside the box solutions. It tends to lean back and forth based on the game.

As for advice I have learned:
>Do not over plan your games. This can be bad and make you struggle if someone does something you do not expect.
>This doesn't mean don't plan at least some possible solutions to an issue, but just keep an open mind.
>Don't be dead set on certain events happening specifically at a certain location. Things can be moved around if needed and stuff ends up completely derailed.
>If playing some pre-written adventure, you might have to adjust rewards to fit the party.
>Actually map out and draw locations if it is important. Dungeons, combat arenas, etc. Some pots might not need it but even a basic map can be really useful.
>Make encounters interesting. Some encounters might be basic, but it is a good idea to throw a curveball every once in a while. Spearman hiding behind shields or barricades, a lone caster buffing or healing enemies, etc.
>>
>>97218290

I wrote my own system over the past five years.

All my players burnt out on TTRPGs during the pandemic.

New players seem to only want to play D&D 5E. I understand making your own system might be a bit cringy, but they won't even play any other indie TTRPGs with me either.

It's the same on Roll20 and (p)reddit. No one even looks at indie games. They complain that it's "too much to learn." Brother- all you have to do is roll dice. As the GM I will tell you how to play. It's literally nothing to learn.

So I just play solo like a true autist.

I'm kind of done with D&D. I burnt out on it during covid and started to notice how inferior the 5E system is compared to the previous editions.

They all want to play the same cookiecutter characters from rpgbot. It's all derivative. I'm done with it.

I prefer to stay lighter on my prep then most as I enjoy a chaotic game with improv. I try to fit an adventure across a double spread of notebook pages. I only write the essentials and let my brain only remember the best of the best. I focus on keeping things fun while also making sure I''m running something I want to run. If my players play smart they can make certain fights or plans easy for them, its a very rewarding feeling. I prefer a lot of socializing and talking in my game, but I fell that combat is needed to spice tings up, I want to improve on adding more combat to my games though. I compulsively think about game ideas and rules tweaks and what to run. I know how seriously to prep and run each game for different groups, some want everything to be serious, and some we almost all of us smoke weed and there is a lot more humor. But there is humor in all my games. I only consider what is canon in my settings as to what my players have seen in these settings, aside from a brief lore doc.

I recommend never playing high or drunk. At least don't play high or drunk while someone else is sober. People are not as funny as they think or able to get as much done as the think while high.
>>
>>97248144
How many times were you playing a week? We usually played once a week with an occasional break and we didn't really get burnt out. Maybe they'll be receptive to trying a new system now.

As for people who only play dnd 5e, they will only switch if some big youtuber pushes another system or if you find a system that is about an IP they like. You might be able to get someone to play aliens if they like alien for example. Even then, be prepared to hear someone ask, "why can't we run this in 5e." There was a player I had in a 40k rpg that kept asking that and thought 5e would work for anything until he saw how the point is that it is easy to die in a warhammer rpg.

>have great idea for a snarky female investigative reporter character
>end up playing a discount Alex Jones instead to avoid making things weird
Is it weird to play female characters in spooky games? Like with other more combat focused systems it's not as big of a deal since you're just smacking things more often, but does the (often) more RP-heavy nature of horror settings make playing the other gender more of a weird experience at the table? Assume we don't put on voices for our characters.

If you are doing well in a campaign, it's your responsibility to bling on your opponent. No one in your campaign will respect you for buying a suspensor multimelta on a 2+ BS fighter. Everyone will respect you when you show up with your leader and their gold-plated gun, archeotech device, and a digi-multilaser.

Do any of you fine folk have a pdf of Necromunda: The Aranthian Succession – Spire of Primus to share? Please and thank you

Upload times for Necro books have increased a lot since there are no epubs to be ported to pdf and some folk has to purchase and scan a copy.

>ten years ago
>meet random GM over Roll20 of all places
>says he wants to run a PBP weeb game where you collect waifu team and go fight shit
>eh why not, can't be worse than all these terrible games I played or these god awful players I GM'd that made me quit GMing
>throw an application that isn't complete shit so he invites me over
>chat a bit, find out we have some things in common
>we both like history, dynasty warriors, rance, final fantasy, zero no tsukaima, warhammer fantasy, etc etc
>world is built with all of this combined in some autistic smorgasburg mix of everything we both like
>despite what sounds like a recipe for a terrible game it's actually fun as fuck
>combat is challenging and every move I make can end me
>lots of plotting and scheming to build myself an army
>good roleplay with characters that have a shit ton of personality
>go through a shit ton of interesting plotlines and quests
>also, lots and lots of waifus
>play through a full 1 year long game

I have old RPG and RP partners I miss. People who vanished into the online ether. It's a common thing, so you're not alone in missing having great player relationships and great games.

The reality of it though is that it's just over. And you have to accept that. But you can also appreciate that you got to enjoy it, and look at the best parts of those experiences and strive to make them a part of how you play games going forward. Most of all, I see one really awesome thing in particular you should take away from this: you can find, and should try to find, games with people that share some of your own interests.

Wage slavery really destroys you mentally. Lost lots of friends and groups to it. Getting destroyed by it myself now. Don't expect to ever play again before retirement.

Honest to goodness, I just had a discussion with my group about this. The worse things get in terms of affordability, and the more demanding work conditions get, the less we're about to schedule games. I've seen lots of people in my other circles fall out of the hobby these last few years because they just don't have the time, and they're exhausted.
