There are bits of 40k lore I like and bits I don't. I don't see the point in getting worked up over people's takes OR lore changes given that like the rules and the models, the setting changes a lot.

Broadly speaking there has always been a disconnect with the setting and the way it is presented. While I play other stuff and like the old bright stuff of the 1990s it was a strange contrast with the lore.

Paradoxically the emphasis on fun made a lot of really disparate elements work.

There's nothing bad at speaking out against something you dislike. If you say it loud enough, there's a chance for it to change in the original.
It can be both good or bad, depending on what it was.

The zoyman's outrage is somewhat understandable, given it's ultrafaggot we're talking about. Everything edgy seems like flashing red lights when they do it.

I feel like making something, ideally something OSR-adjacent. This is kind of an open-ended question: what RPG supplement or other cool thing does /tg/ want to see? Think something you'd pay between $3 and $5 for.

I've got some game design and writing experience. I can handle graphic design and illustration (and sound too, if relevant). I just want some input on what you think might be cool. Trying to decide what to put a little time into.

A random generator for non-dungeon adventures that flowed well through generating charts to end up with solidly-structured adventures that don't involve dungeons. Something for generic fantasy cities, or wilderness.
>>

People use "OSR" to refer to Into the Odd (and a wide variety of other games) because they want to play a particular style of game that main D&D has been slowly trending away from (world-as-obstacle, no predetermined big bads or character arcs, GM doesn't have to delicately balance encounters and PCs don't have to white room box everything they see), but early D&D is pretty ass to actually deal with all its annoying quicks, so they wanted to play a system that has taken advantage of 50 years of game design rather than using descending AC because the designer copied it from naval wargames.

Whether or not these people came from 5e is completely irrelevant, just as it would be completely irrelevant if they decided to play AD&D 1e instead of Into the Odd.
>>
>>96471703
OSR just meant "no-3.0 D&D" back when it started, not long after 3.0 D&D was released.

All the tropes people associate with OSR (Low-level, dirt-caked men trudging into dungeons consisting of nothing but 10x10 rooms, whacking every 5-foot-square with a 10-foot pole, followed by a hoard of hirelings, waiting for their turns to die while the slavishly track how many torches they have remaining) is basically a stereotype, and unfortunately there have been some who decided to embrace that stereotype, while slapping on some bullshit about how making RPGs more like board games is actually giving power to the players, which is quite the cope.

I question the choice to pick up both Vicious and Bloody Debilitation but otherwise yeah that's bog-standard rogue. Bloody Debilitation's really good but I dunno if it's level-12-class-feat-good when you already have Vicious, which is kickass enough on its own. I guess it depends on what else you'd be looking to get instead.

I learned a long time ago never to pick up the AP until it was done for reasons like this, dead book 1 connections and NPCs that went nowhere or extremely late final boss reveals.

I guess the idea was that White Lions are elite bodyguards, so making an entire career out of them doesn't make any sense. They start as hunters and woodsmen anyway and then make a switch to bodyguard.
Anyway, here is a fanmade supplement, it should have White Lions.

>>
>>96470498
If GURPS managed to make a career out of the Heron Guard (who are immortal dual-wielding samurai/cossacks), Warhammer can make a career out of the White Lions.

What systems/mechanics provide good rules for simulating progress of a war effort?
How would you portray moving frontlines and exchange of territories during a war? Both from perspective of commanders and boots on the ground.
Any games where you did something similar?
>>
>>96471343
What do you need it for?
>>
>>96471456
I'm preparing an interstellar war campaign where players are a merc band doing jobs for each faction involved in the conflict.
I could just wing it and move the lines on the map as it feels right, but I was wondering if somebody came up with rules for simulating this sort of thing.
>>
>>96471343
Draw your instellar map, place down a few factions, and play a game of Risk. However that goes tracks the story structure of the war for your game, and adjust as needed. It tracks troop movements and big victories/losses just fine, and that's about all you actually need to know. Where are troops, who owns what, when did surprising victories happen. What is where when. It's all done after the game of Risk. Write down all the moves. Now call each turn a month or year or whatever and voila: you've got a timeline of how a war progressed. Which is all you really needed anyhow, because it's mostly a question of "who and what is where when, fighting whom, when the players did thing."
>>
>>96471724
Doesn't have to be Risk, specifically. I'm just saying "play any war game" and write the moves down, to build your chronology of how the war progresses. Then allow players to get involved and turn the tides by stealing the deathstar plans for that fight that your timeline says the rebels are going to lose, or whatever.

blue is the card draw colour, effects aren't exclusive to colours but you pay a heavy "tax" to get those effects (white discarding cards on draw is supposed to be a downside)

as the power creeps blue will just passively draws a billion cards and have unmatched consistency, purple mills its entire deck and can grab back whatever piece it needs as it pleases

Does it cause effects? Fuck around.

Let's break it down.
Cause or prevent damage? Fight.
Have a direct effect not related to damage (open a lock, put enemies to sleep, create an object, etc)? Fuck around.
An attempt to gather information (check for trap, search a room, interrogation)? Find out.

Hacking a computer? Fuck around. Search the hacked computer for data? Find out. Prevent ICE from blasting your brain? Fight.

Trying to hammer out a solid setting/headcanon for a unified Alien/Predator universe. Here's my take on what to keep , what to shitcan and what to add:

>Things to KEEP:
The Queen and the hive from Aliens. Gives the bugs a purpose beyond just being murder-insects.
Diverse Alein lifeforms (e.g., the T. Ocellus from the Alein Earth).
Gritty corporate dystopia. Weyland-Yutani is the real villain. "Truckers in space" aesthetic is mandatory.
The Engineer/Forerunner concept, but ONLY as a way to explain panspermia. It elegantly explains why so many species are biologically compatible (e.g., Facehuggers working on humans and Yautja). It also supports my favorite fan theory: the Yautja didn't invent their advanced technology; they inherited or reverse-engineered it. This explains how a tribal, honor-based society can also have plasma casters and FTL ships.

>Things to discard:
The AvP movie lore. Predators did not build pyramids on Earth.
The Human/Xenomorph Hybrid (looking at you, Newborn): This completely demystifies the Xenomorph for me. The horror of the Alien is its otherness. It's already the ultimate killer because it takes traits from its host—it's already optimized to hunt us. Making it more human just makes it less scary.
The "Magic" Black Goo: As it stands in the prequel films, the goo is a narrative crutch. It can create, it can destroy, it can mutate... it can do whatever the plot needs. I'd either discard it entirely or give it hard, consistent rules.

>Things to ADD:
More alien life in general. The galaxy feels way too empty with just humans, Xenos, and Preds.

That sounds quite interesting, do you have any idea on how corruption will work? I believe that is a core aspect of NTR/NTS, seeing your partner become more willing and lewd. At the moment I'm playing a game of Liminal Horror and contextualizing the stress/fallout mechanic as a corruption meter for the female character.

>>96302351
>in one case, you can take the route of having the wife stack relevant creature modifiers to then take onto the husband as a reward for saving her
That's a very interesting idea, I'm doing something similar in my game where the consequences of getting too lewd bring pros and cons. At the moment her womb is being parasitized and the coonsequences are yet to be determined.

>>96323607
That's actually something I've been looking for for quite a while, a system that would allow me to play some kind of NTR slice of life game where NPCs have some level of autonomy to surprise me. Love the idea of exploring and finding out about bits and pieces of what's happening. I've been thinking about playing something like this using so1um, but I'm not sure how I would work around some stuff yet.
For the game I'm playing right now there are some surprise factors I'm looking forward to but I think it's possible for them to happen without tinkering with the system I"m playing with.

Denying myself a bit is a turn on, but the main reason I rather play than jerk off is that if I start jerking off I won't know more of what's going to happen. If the game is being interesting enough I'll want to stay on that edge, that thrill.

Slightly off-topic but have you explored CYOAs? They have some good tentacle stuff.

I'm aware they exist, but not exactly fan of the format.

They're fucking pirates, hypnotizing giant mermaids, and getting kidnapped by island-dwelling amazons. It's gonna be pretty cool, actually.
