What is your setting's game's tax policy in your game in your setting?
sales tax (if any) is already factored into the face-value price of equipment. it's not like the modern US: the amount of gp in the equipment list is the amount a PC actually pays. same goes for the wages of retainers and experts (wrt any income tax).roads and bridges may have specific tolls, those are requested immediately when the party are passing through.inheritance incurs a fixed 10% in taxes as per page B13, and if a fighter character ACQUIRES a castle/stronghold/land then the settlers pay 10 gp per year as per page X52.
>>97342003So you are fine with ships using private docks and not paying that tax? It's like taxing the caravan for using the stables in the market, and storage in the market, stopping the thieves in the market, but they are on their own on the road and you have no road upkeepIt's basically that? I would torch your world and actually hire pirates to blast your docks for being that stupid
>>97342073They're not private docks, they're state property and built for the purpose of trade ships, the state has the right to tell other captains to GTFO at its discretion. A private dock's owner could charge a literal arm and a leg if he wanted. That and pirates aren't a problem, any of them would quickly run afoul of my setting's equivalent of the EIC or leviathan hunters, neither of which provide quarter.
>>97342142I would literally make my life goal to torch and destroy all docks in your setting, you have like a simpleton's idea of what a tax is at this point>Just risk your ship oversees so you can use my dock and pay for it!>No you can't use another dock!LiteralTimber

What is the counterculture of 2020s, that could be used as the basis for a contemporary countercultural tabletop game?Take the World of Darkness for example, which was so grounded in the the counterculture of the 90s that it comes across as dated and strange today. How would you update the World of Darkness so that it better represents the counterculture of today?Nightmare Mode: Talk about more than just politics. There's more to rebellion against the status quo and the prevailing social norm than who you vote for.

Douchemachine used to be the largest competition to GW. Now look at it and laugh
>>97334752Now is the worst time in be in an awg.The first and greatest golden age was during warmahordes, confrontation, at43, malifaux, peaking with X wing, then ending when Guildball died.Second era was the Kickstarter era, which produced games like infinity, kingdom death, and lots of 3d prints. It was more boardgames than anything though. Died in COVID.GW used to be retarded, completely unbalanced, crappy models, erratic release schedule. Iirc there was a period where it was 2 years between marine codices and Orks hadn't been updated for 6 years. Now they've addressed a lot of the issues and more, will be very hard to unseat.
>>97335010>Now is the worst time in be in an awg.Speak for yourself. At least I gave a reason why it's great at the moment. I can currently buy two outright full wargames (games, not starter sets) for the price I would be paying for 1-2 boxes of GW basic dudes. I recently got about 5 games worth of minis for 1/4th of a GW army(actually probably way less because I haven't looked at GW prices since 4th edition). That's not just two forces per-game either.Like I said, I don't play LGS tourneyfag games. Hobbyist games are booming and they are dirt cheap to get into. The GW business model doesn't interest me or others, I am not even in their target demographic, they don't make products for me. Same goes for the GW heartbreakers you are listing too.
>>97332225There's long standing issues with price of entry and the presentation of rules when it comes to battletech. The rules in particular are great but they are often misunderstood, particuarly the modular part. All that's needed is a free rules SRD and a cheap miniatures line to go with it. They insist on selling overpriced boxes and repackaging the rules in as many ways they can come up with.
>>97330736nothing if you mean tabletop games. All the competition imploded (warmahorde died of cringe, x-wing killed by 2nd edition invalidation, infinity died when pewter price rose 400%, D&D died soon as stranger things became turbo-gay and WOTC embraced the woke without realizing they're pandering to the 1% of the country that never plays tabletop gamesBasically the only competition GW has is card games. Magic the Gathering and the retro pokemon/yugioh kiddies. Those spaces had a similar attempt at replacement that didn't work out as well (the Living Card Game fad ala Game of Thrones died when people realized it wasn't any cheaper than MTG since you'd end up spending $300-500 on a single LCG which would automatically die as the 2nd half of any LCG life-cycle involves too high a buy-in to start without a disadvantage)But card games don't require the expensive molds of plastic miniatures, so MTG will always face stiffer competition if they screwup than GW will, hence why GW treats its customers so utterly shit without a care.
>>97330704I loled when they sent their molds to a sketchy company in China that stole them and used them to make dollar store toys. >>97335010>Now they've addressed a lot of the issues and more, will be very hard to unseat.I'll add that 40K is a complete hobby. There's tons of lore to read, licensed novels, animations on Warhammer+, an upcoming Amazon show, painting, modeling, etc. Whereas other games feel very constrained. Historical gamers are into the Barons War right now but there's only so many kits you do for that. Similarly, DnD is super popular because it's practically a subculture unto itself that you get nerd credit for being interested in, even if you're more into collecting products and your game is just an excuse to do theatre kid antics with your tiefling on Discord or you're not playing at all. I think that's why there's so many people who only play DnD but you never meet a guy who refuses to play anything but Call of Cthulhu or FATE games.

>>97342039and this is all aside from the issue of wanting standardised games because Warhammer's popularity has the side effect that many people get into it on their own, without a dedicated group of likeminded roleplayers, and will look for a standardised way to play with random people to speed up things with people you usually don't know enough to coordinate well with making weather things part of spells, magic items or army rules fits well often enough, given the fantasy nature of the factions, balances the asymmetry with an associated cost, and is generally sufficient for the desired mental images
Anons, help me with a question.Unit A is near the Impas. Its front row moves slightly forward. The opponent sees this unit, and their Unit B is on the flank. Then the following happens:1) The opponent charges Unit B onto Unit A.2) Unit B has enough movement to maneuver, and after moving, it finds itself in contact with Unit A, touching the corners of its bases.3) After contact, Unit B turns, ending up in this position.Question: Is this possible? And another question: if there's another unit instead of the Impas, will it just move an inch?
>>97341829Why does an AI piece have an artist's signature on it?
>>97342071Any player that tries to do retarded slimy moves like this that are super unrealistic but technically "allowed" in the rules is a faggot and should not be given the privilege of playing a game with you.

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere. And as we enter this happiest and newest of years, remember: 2e was never an old-school game, bait is for reporting, and fish is for smoking! Happy new year, grogs!Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency. If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. Can you sum up for me what are the principles of OSR a DM should follow. It would be ideal if you gave me a brief explanation for each point. So far I got:>Player agencydont restrict your players choices, at all if possible, as little as possible if you need to>Emergent Storytellingprepare minimal story, let players decide what they do and how they do it>XP for goldreward exp for the gold the players carry out of the dungeon or otherwise obtain>Do the Book keepingkeep track of time and resources. Follow the procedures for encounters and such>Natural languageput your PCs in a situation, let players figure out how to get out of the situation, than have them explain to you how they want to solve it, you as the DM decide what mechanics to use

>>97340041I'd say the whole point of why I love WoD is how loose cannon in lore interpretations I can be both in-universe and out and how you're encouraged to fill in the gaps yourself. Did Saulot create the Baali or was that Cappadocius? Maybe it was an ante beyond the 13 like Lucien? Or maybe there's a reason the Assamites hate them so much while being led by a guy that might have crawled out of the original Pit itself? And who's inside the Aralu mystery box? Are the TMH the encompassing hand of the Antediluvians playing both sides or just a bunch of irrelevant schizos? Is Gaia secretly Ennoia? The canon answers and speculations are less important than what they do for your game and how you can use them to do cool stuff. I'm not very familiar with Mage cosmology+canon but I do hear they get up to some wacky nonsense there. If the whole point is "your own beliefs determine reality" then I'd say that's as much of a green light as you wish to change whatever the hell you want.

Isn't partying always worse than dodging unless your weapon skill is huge?
>>97341972Parries are not usually subject to encumbrance penalties, and for 'average' fighters (Speed 5, Skill 12) they are generally the highest active defence they have. Armed parries against unarmed attacks are also one of the few ways to get a 'free' attack action. There are many downsides, of course; they quickly stack penalties from multiple attacks, usually get a lesser retreating bonus, risk injury (if unarmed) or weapon breakage, etc.A typical set of defences might be a dodge and retreat against the first attack of the round, a parry against the second, maybe a block against a third, and dodges against all subsequent ones.
>>97341537>How much would the limitation "Limited: bullets" be worth?I think it's more-or-less equivalent to metal piercing attacks, which are officially (Basic Set, p. 46) an 'occasional' threat, granting a -60% limitation. This seems generous, and the GM may instead rule that it is a 'common' source of damage, for a -40% limitation.
>>97342077-40% seems fair.
