>>97339911No, anon. You have a cool idea, and canon has failed you. You know what that means? That means you can do whatever the fuck you want with it.You want human cultists, how about this - they lay down some funky planetary-scale rituals and try to turn the world into a Warp Star. Warp Stars have been canon since 6th at the latest, and I'm pretty sure I saw something about them in 4th or 5th. They have weird fucky gravity tides which can yank ships right out of the warp, last I knew, which also meshes with the weird ork interdiction field.
>>97339911>If there's no technological method, only magical, then I'll drop the idea. There's no tech as standard that'll do it in the current era, nothing mass producable certainly. But you're absolutely able to say they've got their hands on an ancient piece of DAoT tech that will. Or say there's a Mechanicus/Mechanicum priest that's created a prototype that will. Or they've physically pulled in extra celestial mass or a rogue comet/planet is passing through that's fucking with the warp lanes. 40k's a setting with an inbuilt 'do whatever the fuck you want' clause.
>>97339911Like you hinted with the orks, any kind of gravitational disturbance also interferes with the Warp. Sufficient turbulence makes it totally inaccessible.
>>97267827Trying to understand Dark Heresy 2E because one of my friends wants to run a game using the system (but in a homebrew setting). I'm coming here from RPGs like D&D, Cyberpunk, Shadowrun, and GURPS. I was last running a GURPS campaign (it was a high-TL, highly cinematic game of cyborg/mutant PCs in a PMC fighting psychic aliens and magic robots), so those are the rules I am most recently familiar with. For anyone who's played both games, how do they compare?I'm reading through the rules and one thing I notice is that gear acquisition is abstract. My friend realized this also and doesn't like it, so he's trying to assign prices to everything, but he doesn't know how to do it.I'm also not sure I like the concept of Aptitudes. My friend says that he likes it, because "it'll discourage min-maxing and encourage roleplay", but I see it as the exact opposite. You're encouraged to buy up traits within your aptitudes, and if your concept calls for traits that don't match up with one of the given roles, then you're punished for that. Maybe I might just be angry because the roles given in my friend's homebrew kind of suck. For instance, I want to play a melee character (my friend knows this), but the only role with a Melee Skill aptitude is the "Technician" role of all things, and none of the homeworlds/backgrounds give Melee Skill aptitude. But he also "doesn't want to change things too much", because he's using someone else's homebrew and "doesn't want to risk unbalancing the game."Idk. Maybe this is just my GURPS brain unable to come to terms. When running that game, I would either allow a trait, or forbid it, depending on whether it made sense in the setting. Aptitudes feel like character classes with extra steps, which is the exact thing we were trying to run away from with my previous game.
>>97342352>For anyone who's played both games, how do they compare?A list of parameters to compare them by would be helpful.>so he's trying to assign prices to everything, but he doesn't know how to do it.Good news! 1) DH1E used monetary prices (outside of Ascension at least), 2) it is not known whether any of the designers behind the game lines knew how to do that, either.Overall, would you prefer prices by mechanical utility or prices by internal economical plausibility?>You're encouraged to buy up traits within your aptitudes, and if your concept calls for traits that don't match up with one of the given roles, then you're punished for that. The mechanic tends to result in that, yes; the aptitude spreads in the original system itself can be questionable too, so it's not the brew alone.

>>97337137>However, if you go out of your way to say "actually slavery isn't evil in this world", this is a reflection of your own character.this is not a reflection of one's character unless one openly states this is what they truly believe in.example: my party is in the city that has slaves. The system ain't pure but general point is you either have to willfully become a slave or commit a serious crime. Is the system inherently evil? I wouldn't say so. Does it reflect what I believe? Dunno, I believe in labor camps for career criminals but otherwise I don't think slavery should exist
What sci-fi setting has the best Space Rome?
>>97340258The Angloid has always despised the Roman, even as he uses the faint remnants of being conquered by Rome and adopting Rome's ways for legitimacy. Previous thread: >>97215703GURPS is a modular, adaptable system, capable of running a wide range of characters, settings, and play styles, with a level of detail varying from lightweight to completely autistic.Optional rules allow you to emulate different genres with a single system, or even switch genres within a single game.A nearly complete archive of GURPS books can be found by using the image. Never post direct links to the archive anywhere in plain text.If you're wondering where to start:- The Basic Set covers everything, including a lot of optional rules you probably won't use.- A genre guide can be found in the archive, under Unofficial/GURPSgen. It tells you what extra books and articles you may find useful for many common genres.- How To Be a GURPS GM is a good read even for players.- GCS (gurpscharactersheet.com) is an excellent character-builder software, with page references to all the books and the option to export to both Foundry and Fantasy Grounds.Thread question: What are some systems or you would like to include or see included in a campaign, but haven't been able to? They don't have to be the main focus of the game, having them only as something on the side is okay.
I'm kind of shocked the Gun Fu book still has that classic faux Chinese font. Wouldn't people on the left consider it very racist, despite the fact that it isn't?
For anyone that's played both GURPS and one of the 40k RPGs (Dark Heresy 2E, Only War, Rogue Trader, etc.) can anyone compare the two games? I've been trying to get my group into GURPS, but after some months of playing, I feel like I'm the only one who actually likes the system. My game will be ending in a couple of sessions more. After that, one of my players is going to start GM'ing for the first time, and he's invited me to his upcoming game. He's going to be running someone else's DH2E homebrew called "Sector X", set in the world of Girls' Frontline. Though I'm interested in the setting, I've looked through the rules for DH2E and Sector X and I'm rather unimpressed. There are a lot of rules that are lacking, to the point that he's had to ask me for advice when adjudicating things the book doesn't cover (like using non-abstract currencies or creating custom roles/backgrounds/homeworlds). I especially want to kill whoever came up with the idea of Aptitudes. It feels like such a huge step down from GURPS. But maybe it's not that bad in actual play. Does anyone have experience?
>>97342362I've played a variety of the FFG RPGS before. I don't care for them mechanically, mostly because of the d100 system. In GURPS, a person with a competent level of skill has about a 75% chance of succeeding a task, in FFG games that's 30-40%, unless you constantly are fishing for bonuses. The rules, like most non-GURPS rpgs, tend to collapse in on themselves the further you go from the core mechanics and gameplay, which makes homebrew always a risky proposition, as you've already seen for yourself. I also would say that if you are intending to run a game with tactical combat you should really do GURPS.Basically yes, its as bad as it looks. I love the FFG games but as games they aren't amazing, its the quality of the rulebooks and amazing theming that makes them fun, not the core d100 mechanics.
>>97342362I played only war back in the day.It is a huge step down from GURPS, while also being just as complex if not more in play. I can't imagine someone going from a gurps campaign to a 40k rpg and thinking it's gonna be an improvement.Everything you can do in only war you can do in gurps, but easier, better, and with deeper gameplay.
>>97342456>>97342465Ah, then it looks like I'm in for a rough one. Thanks for the responses, anons.

I was in the middle of a crawl when I dropped it a few months ago, this time decided to quit looking for so many rules and just run with things as they came up. turned into a massively fun exploration of a tomb-turned-honeypot space station that resulted in it rejecting me completely and trying to purge me. I made it back to Karum with 150 rads and 1 tank of oxygen. I think I was trying to treat it more like ker nethalas or any other strict dungeon crawler instead of an rpg. once I stopped that and got loose it was a great time. What is the counterculture of 2020s, that could be used as the basis for a contemporary countercultural tabletop game?Take the World of Darkness for example, which was so grounded in the the counterculture of the 90s that it comes across as dated and strange today. How would you update the World of Darkness so that it better represents the counterculture of today?Nightmare Mode: Talk about more than just politics. There's more to rebellion against the status quo and the prevailing social norm than who you vote for.
The problem is that there is an actual group of people who have their own subculture based around personal expression and the government wants to wipe them out.
