Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:

>What is Trench Crusade?
An alternate weird history 28mm/32mm tabletop skirmish game still in a pre-release playtesting phase but with the full release slated for this year. Based on the art and lore of Mike Franchina, whose illustrations you may have seen floating around on /tg/ for a several years now, and designed by Tuomas Pirinen, one of the original creators of Mordheim. It's grimdark, it's visceral, it's awesome, and it's very Blanchitsu.

>What Trench Crusade is not
TC not an excuse for you to discuss IRL religion, history that didn't occur in the game, culture war shit, or discord bullshit on /tg/. Keep it on topic.

>What's the QRD on the background?
The Knights Templar turned heretic and opened the Gates of Hell when they took Jerusalem during the First Crusade. Over 800 years later the war is still ongoing as technology has developed to a pseudo diesel-punk WW1 standard and a third of Humanity has sided with the Infernal Princes.

>How do I get started?

Everyone I know who watches Fatt Coville videos is a fucking terrible GM. I've never fully watched one and I am widely considered the best GM out of all 3 groups I'm part of. I am regularly requested to run campaigns. People borderline fall asleep in the games others run. There's also no tension because they know that these Coville acolytes will fudge rolls until all PCs survive the battle.

If you're a good GM, it's an inmate talent you can hone over time. You're born that way. If you aren't, then no amount of shitty advice is going to make up for your lack of talent. It just is what it is. This idea that everyone should "try" DMing is retarded. The idea that anyone can be good at it? lolno. Its like some fat divorced on who suddenly decides he's gonna become a famous author. Fat chance. Most people fucking suck at GMing. Hell, most of them suck at playing, but at least in that case the game depends less on them.

NTA but it's a game about make-believe. You're telling a story together and everything the GM does should be in service of a more interesting story. If it's more interesting to let the filler random encounter combat end early, good. If it's more interesting to realize "oh shit I underestimated the party better slap another 50% extra HP onto this boss" or "I better give him a second phase because they curbstomped him since I didn't realize they were just built different" fine. As long as everyone at the table is having fun who gives a shit?

And here's something: Not everyone enjoys what you do. I know! You have autism! Sorry for your loss of humanity.

a lot of the tips in picrel are neat, but they make me realise how much i hate 5E as a system. all these little hacks are things you just don't NEED in a better ruleset.

one of the tips is something like
>if the players are finding the dungeon too easy, put eight goblins in the next room instead of five, or add in a goblin warlord.
and that's the kind of d20 shovelware shit i've always hated. punish the players for finding solutions. YOU know what's fun: put an anti-magic field on that locked door so the wizard can't just use a knock spell.

i don't want a game world that 'cares' about me. fuck your quantum ogre, just draw a map and place things on that map.

It's a shame this thread is made by some subhuman shitposter because there is a point here that I agree with. GMing, in a sense, is a talent. Not everyone can do it. Sure, it's also a skill that can be honed, but you need a certain baseline of capability to start GMing at all. I'm not entirely sure what that talent consists of, though I think atleast 50% of it is being intelligent. If you are stupid, chances are you're a shit GM. But then again, I also know some smart people who make for dreadful GMs, albeit for different reasons.

Changes added for now.

>Sepoy Trooper
It got "Bayonet Training" trait.

>Sepoy Officer
The "Lemurian Armour" trait also gets the "Gas mask" trait (why is it a trait and not an item?)

>Exotic Spy
Added the "Diplomat" keyword.

Questions:
>Lemurian Sharpshooter
If the character is a lemurian heretic, how can it work with prophecies? How could we make a trait that counters them?

>Maharaha LP
I think so

>Regular Troops wouldn't benefit
Then it applies to Ascetics, Pirates, Priestesses, Flag-Elephants, and Spies, which is definitely enough on its own.

>Sharpshooter
The lost men still use prophecies, and even the Arch-Heretic British can use them too. For the Sharpshooter I would suggest letting it use a variation of the predestination prophecy where only it can attack once the condition is met, but it can do so without LoS and with a damage buff. Sevenfold Sharpshooter or something like that.

>Elephants
It is a bit of a kludge, but you could combine the profiles and add an addendum saying that two elephants constitute one elite for the purposes of the elite counter. I have done that repeatedly for units.

>Gas Masks as traits

Something like this?

>Seventhfold Sharpshooter
Secretly note down an Enemy or Hostile model, a hex and publicly note an upcoming turn. If at any point in the noted turn the noted model enters the noted Hex, interrupt its activation, and the “Lemurian Sharpshooter” resolves as many ranged shots as it has available (if it has 4 shots, do 4 attacks; if it has 2 shots, do 2 attacks; if it has to reload, nothing happens). The “lemurian sharpshooter” still needs to be within its range to do so.

No, but honestly, if you've got a tyrant lizard, you're probably either a deeply unsubtle person, a dynast, or both.

>I do rather like the idea of a DB that cares for a t-rex buddy as the distraction for the rest of the circle, honestly.
You sort of just described Belkar from Order of the Stick
>>
>>97238601
Nah, not necessarily a token evil teammate, which is what Belkar's actual role is. A DB that acts as the party face and has a legendary size familiar as a pet to be able to contribute to fights is a solid mechanical niche, and DBs are expected to have weird entourages, so if the circle is even remotely laying low, the other PCs being special snowflakes shouldn't be an issue. Belkar doesn't serve that role.

The secret to minmaxing 3CDs is not to try to compete with dicepools, but environmental and Shaping effects. Just have your 3CD's generic NPC Charm be something like "you fall upwards into a big psychedelic vortex that does uncountable damage" or "you turn anyone you glare at into a pillar of salt"

>B-b-but my pet ferret has like 30 dice on his Survival attack roll!
Yeah, yeah, and that's cute and all. But that's irrelevant in a situation where he really should've been rolling Dodge instead.

There are optional rules in the crit deck to not draw them when the person nat 20'd is a higher level than you, solves the issues of bosses randomly being decapitated and henchmen suddenly kneecapping heroes
>>
>>97238053
Yea, my GM has it so only enemies equal to or greater than the pc's level can get crit cards. Also, you don't draw a fumble card if it was against a lower lvl enemy.
>>
>>97237683
This is my experience as well. There's no real baseline power-level for the effects. Sometimes it's basically nothing, other times it drastically swings the fight. The deck is in no way balanced or fair, but then again I guess that's kind of the point. Like, both the 1e and 2e versions of the deck have at least one card that reads something along the lines of "you throw your weapon a random distance in a random direction", and my group has lost two high-level weapons that way--one was hurled overboard at sea, and the other was tossed from the top of a tower into a horde of demons amassed outside.

Also, some of the crit/fumble effects just fucking erase a character. This is especially true for spellcasters. Like, every time you cast a spell with an attack roll, there is a very small chance that you have to make a fort save or (direct quote from the card) "your head explodes and you die." Another card forces two rolls on the Rod of Wonder table, which has a chance to literally teleport you to Hell (no save on either effect). For anything but a high-level character, that's guaranteed death. The decks are honestly terrifying.

Basically, using the crit/fumble decks just adds an extra layer of gambling to every combat encounter, with stakes that are shockingly high.
>>
>>97238140
Correction: as the other Anon mentioned, not EVERY combat encounter, as by default the cards basically have the incapacitation trait.
>>

Incorrect. Even the Imperium doesn't go that far. The Imperial Infantryman's Uplifting Primer contains instructions for Guardsmen on anointing and field-stripping their lasguns. Astartes are expected to know how to maintain their own gear at least on a basic level, since Chapter serfs, techpriests, and techmarines are not always on hand to assist. Repair cement is part of every marine's standard kit.

Has anyone had any memorable ship combats in games? Give us the play by play, who were you, who was the enemy, what were you both there for, and how did it go?
I had one where I was hired by the navy to recon a suspected ork system. I was in a Firestorm, the initial opposition was a pair of roks (formerly the planet's moon). I played wild weasel with them for a while, chipping them down a bit, when something (possibly a warp drive implosion, definitely a random table result) spat a pair of traitor ships out of the aether. One was a Hellbringer, I believe, and the other was likely an Iconoclast.
The traitor ships emerged north of the roks, which was rather unfortunate for me as I was east of them at the time, recovering from a pass at them. Being in their broadside arcs, I had my enginseer hit the jets and managed to loop around to their aft, where I sank a lance shot into the Hellbringer's engines and rolled well enough to cripple its maneuverability. The roks, sporadically and chaotically, as is their wont, began to converge on the damaged cruiser, and I moved wide to pick off the now lonesome escort (which had unwisely tried to chase me down.)
Given that my Firestorm was equipped with a rather powerful archaeotech lance, and the escort had already taken chip damage from 'Eavy Gunz, I slagged the hull in a single pass and set to towing it away for the bounty of adamantium, leaving the cruiser and orks to duke it out behind me.
>>
>>97237639
RT ship combat is an absolutely awful system. I wish FFG would do "legally distinct 40k" a-la Void War and revise their early work, they were getting close with DH 2.0 and IM is a step back.

>working with them openly is the best cover possible. Fighting them just wastes time and resources, and hiding from them would likely fail.
except they call his bullshit immediately
successfully lying to them is even more likely to fail than hiding
it is possible he will still manage to convince them, but it will be against some really long odds

the obvious choice is to wait for Roy and Xykon to fight and then act amidst the chaos
maybe Nale feels it will take too long for them to clash, and his tacky makeover is time-limited
>>

>>97237486
So it's a durkon situation. Will durkon intervene on Nale's behalf on the next page?
>>
>>97237435
>>97237850
I don't think this is as bad a position for Nale as you're making it out to be. He knows he can't take Xykon on his own, but he also knows that the Order's odds on their own are poor as well (not to mention that they can't afford to waste resources on fighting him, and that's without even knowing about the dragon they just wasted resources killing). The Order also has no reason to assume that his goals deviate from their own, even if he himself is obviously untrustworthy. If Nale frames it right he might be able to get them to agree to something seemingly harmless that ultimately benefits him.
This could also just escalate into Haley and Roy attacking before Nale can present his case and Nale retreating to rethink his strategy (assuming he isn't intentionally putting the Order on edge as part of some greater plan, who knows) I guess.
>>
>>97237486
>Nale's goal is to break the last gate
that's the task he was given, but whether he actually plans to do it for the guys who barged in and threatened him is still unknown

Welcome to /un0/, an RP thread for playing a World of Darkness/Chronicles of Darkness Hunter. For any OOC questions about WoD/CofD, check the official general. >>97224887

Rules:
>We are acephale. There is no storyteller, we are not a quest.
>This thread is based primarily but not exclusively in the nWoD/CofD game Hunter: the Vigil. However, Vigil is defined by being highly setting agnostic, with a system for creating entirely custom monsters that do not exist in other WoD/CofD games. Thus, you have significant freedom in what you want to play and what you want to hunt. Feel free to play a member of the Society of Leopold, or a member of the Lucifuge hot on the tail of a Lasombra.
>Namefagging is encouraged but by no means mandatory.
>Keep in mind that even highly experienced Hunters typically only have fractured pieces of the puzzle, and every table has their own canon. The night is dark and full of misinformation.
>/un0/ is conceived of as an experimental end to end encrypted program that is very hard to compromise, retains very little data and purges that data regularly. Please play an actual Hunter.
>Spoiler any OOC discussion.

Happy hunting.
Unless this thread somehow takes off like a rocket, this will be the last un0 thread for the foreseeable future. Towards the end of the thread, please give your feedback in regard to these shorter, limited run RP threads.

>Bugs in their skin
Parasites with mind control? Demonic possession? Secret government project? Could be anything. That does not sound good, they better have someone they can call cause I got a feeling that this hunt is gonna be a hard one.

Well shit that doesn't sound good.

I just think I'll be hiding the book on my person. The scamp doesn't really fully talk often but it's not terrible conversation.

Breaking Bad's Mexico filter is quite a classic. I wonder if some other alternate dimensions have their own filter? Have been somewhat opening my eyes to the possibility of things outside of our reality.
>>97237049
My money's on some sort of government parasite that's gone out of control.

"God" being callous is oddly fitting with what plagues us. The yearly forest fires on America's west coast could serve as evidence. Rumors from survivors fleeing the disasters mention seeing figures in the infernos. The more delirious accounts involve beautiful wings.

I wouldn't know save what I hear through buddies, I'm not crazy enough to leave terra firma without knowledge of how to get back. But you hear things. Knew one hunter who had a psychic friend. No clue if he was legit, but when they were looking for a missing person, the psychic claimed to see some sort of lightless pelagic world filled with incomprehensibly large creatures, and legions of smaller, far more ravenous beings, illuminated only by the crackle of lightning above a dark sea dotted with rocky, lifeless islands. Psychic started drinking heavily after that.

It feels wrong to say on this of all days, but I agree. I didn't grow up terribly devout but what faith I have has been shattered by ten years of knowing the truth. Arguments of free will ring hollow when you've seen an undead monster steal it from someone with but a glance and an utterance. I would be cautious to attribute angels to california wildfires, could just as easily be some esoteric spirit. Or, loathsome as it is to say, mundane hallucination.

>he's back for another paddling

>In the game Werewolf: The Apocalypse, the Garou (werewolves) were made to defend the earth from the cosmic forces that threaten to tear it apart. The Garou fight against the Wyrm, the destroyer. It is a struggle against nearly insurmountable odds, especially considering the rivalry between many tribes. These rivalries make it almost impossible for the werewolves to present a unified front against a cosmic force that pervades reality.
>From this morass of hatred and mutual betrayal, there is little hope that the Garou can emerge triumphant against a foe so well armed as the Wyrm. The Wyrm promises money, power, sex, and whatever else the heart desires to its followers while the Garou receive no reward for their striving. It drives them deeper and deeper into despair, or into betrayal so deep that they choose to serve the Wyrm instead.

Is it really that bad? I mean, do the victims even know they were victims of ancient magic that forces them to have sex?
