>>96477262There is a light amount of tracking for rarer metals. The 8 basics are assumed to be always available and you only need to use an action to replenish investiture. The others you need specific vials for. If you lack access to a metal you can't use it. From a practical standpoint this means that rarer powers have a cost to using them. A mistborn can get a talent to deplete a metal reserve to use it once for a more powerful effect. You could do a powerful steelpush but be unable to steelpush again until you down a vial despite having investiture available to use on the other metals.

Why are some people so afraid to run games?I bought a beginners box for Star Wars: Edge of the Empire, on a whim when I was visiting a comic shop around 2012 or 2013 and had my first ttrpg Experience the following weekend as a GM.Since then, my players and I had a great time and most of them started running games on their own. So why the fuck do I see so many idiots online, mystifying the job of a GM? It should be easier than ever to run games today (yes even online three out of four games are totally fine, if you filter out the obvious morons).
>>96475829>How do i stop and just learn all the cool shit i wanna know how to do?Focus on one thing at a time.Get a list of steps. Google that shit. Then learn how to do the first step. Break down the first step into a series of steps.Like if step one is "fill a quart sized pot halfway with water"That's actually four steps.Get quart sized potDetermine where halfway up the pot isGet waterPut water into pot up to halfway. Now if you don't own a pot, step one breaks down into getting money to buy a pot, going to where you can buy a pot, buying a pot, bringing home the pot, removing packaging from the pot, washing the pot, drying the pot, putting the pot in a place you will keep it from now on, and then getting the pot when you're ready to complete step one.Or you could borrow a pot. Or steal one I suppose.Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
>>96475783>the comic seems to be more about self-sabatogers who complain about never getting the chance to do things but then squandering them from lack of effort, because excusing it as “nobody will give m the chance” is easier. He doesn't say that nobody ever gave him the chance. He says he doesn't know how. It seems to lampoon both on my opinion because that woman gets irate pretty quickly.I'll think about why she bothers me more than him. I think it's because Howie is completely aware of his own ignorance whereas she is certain of her ability to help him, fails, and yet directs all of her frustration on him despite the entire situation being created by her and her desire to make him feel better.I'm actually reminded of (I think) an Upright Citizens Brigade but where a child could only say the words "shut up" and said with youthful vigor and enthusiasm. And even his mother and doctors who understood the situation would eventually lose their cool at a kid getting in their face and telling them to shut up after everything they said. It wears on you. I recently experienced something nearly identical where someone close to me with encephalopathy could only repeat "....what?" as they actively resisted my every attempt to help them and had brought attack on themselves through their own actions. I lost my cool just like the woman.
>>96477040Actually, if I remember correctly, that "Howie" comic might have been inspired by some anon that's always hanging around the /ic/ and /adv/ boards, forever asking people "how to draw" and lamenting that he'll never become a world famous artist or "be allowed to express his creativity" while also admitting he can't make time/is too busy to dedicate time to practice drawing. And almost all the advice he's given is usually rebutted with the question "but how do I do that?", whether it's learning a specific style, finding the motivation/time to practice, or even just how to learn how other people draw.It reminds me a lot of a constant debate point between pro-ai artists and anti-ai people, where the former argues "I need AI because I don't know how to draw" and the most common rejoinder is "Pick up a pencil". And neither side comes to any clearer an understanding because while just literally picking up a pencil and plugging away at drawing IS technically one of the most important steps to being an artist, the former usually seems to be conveying "I don't know how to draw like a professional" which is a far more involved process that may not even guarantee them the results they want. So both sides remain near eternally dead-locked over it.
>>96471203>>96475476>Good GMs also have strong social skills, they are eloquent, and they are quick-witted. You can run a session without these traits, but it will remain a session (singular) because the players will not want to continue. One small example from years ago: I joined a one-shot where the GM suffered from constant vocalized speech pauses ("Uhhh, "Ermm", "Eehhh, "Huhh") and it drove me nuts. This, more than anything, is why I can't GM. I have negative ability to enthrall people and I have the adaptability of a brick on a slope.
>>96477482I can totally imagine that. I've seen anons like that. Especially on /adv/.It's just that the comic itself is more mixed and measured than one entirely directed against Howie would be. So, it's generous if that's true.

Returning to my LA desert homebrew, wanted to share the gist of my idea before I took a break from the boards.>The BadlandsOverrun with orcs, bandits, and lizardmen clashing with one another for dominance over the region. Towns and villages would be scarce, depraved dens of criminals and thieves where higher fame may paint a target on your back for bounty hunters or vengeful warlords. Would essentially be a hard mode variant of the Inner Kingdom, and an excuse to make a bunch of tables and events using enemies from other homebrews (harpies from ACHE, kobolds from Lewdyria, etc.)Ended up leaning away from the arabian nights aesthetic due to a lack of focus. I remember there were a lot of complaints that the combat was too easy or something so I wanted to use this to try and make encounters that were hard and punishing (but not Frost Marshes bullshit). The reward would be homebrew spells and treasures that play off of fetishes that aren't in the game.Problem is, I don't have a lot of material that could properly fill such a region without simply copying other documents. Any and all ideas would be appreciated, however big, small, or contrary.

>>96477307>Nothing but buzzwordsIt plays nothing like an MMO, anon.>>96477266OD&D was a slapdash mishmash of multiple different systems and was so shoddy TSR had to have entire sections of their magazine(s) dedicated to just trying to fix it.
>>96477445>OD&D was a slapdash mishmash of multiple different systems and was so shoddy TSR had to have entire sections of their magazine(s) dedicated to just trying to fix it.Yes, it was 1974 and nobody had ever made an RPG before. However, it had an actual design goal, intended gameplay loop, and play experience.
>>96477461And it was fucking atrocious. Even the handful of people who helped make it realized this. That is why we got Basic and Advanced lines, anon - the game sucked. And even then, both of those lines were horseshit because they were so scattershot in so many ways. It's why 3e "felt" good when it launched because it somewhat attempted to fix those issues but was again riddled with "well, what if we took X and made it do Y" bullshit and had layers upon layers of tedium (cross-skill bonuses for instance, or how to do grapple mechanics). 4e decided enough was enough and focused on what worked and took the literal decades of fan commentary from mail, forums, and fansites to make the game people had been claiming they wanted>Fighters can do more than just swing a weapon>No one needed to be the mandatory cleric because every character could heal out of combat and healing potions were affordable>Combat was grand with moving parts and counters and more>Epic levels right there in core, and they made more sense than the "spheres" bullshit from BECMI/RC or crapping over martials like they did in 3e>Halflings were no longer toddlers but preteen sized which made more sense>Focused skill uses>Casters no longer needed to prepare non-combat spells in their spell slots, they could just learn a ritual>In fact, anyone with the Ritualist feat could learn rituals, so now your Barbarian could get in on helping set up magical defenses or having a floating disk haul out the treasure>Actual legit tiers of play that made sense rather than the wishy washy crap that was implied in earlier editions and now 5e>Actual rules and guidelines on how to engage the numerous kinds of party members>Actual fucking roleplay rules and guidelines, a fucking first for the game>Rangers didn't suck
Why are they always the weakest class? Why do designers hate them so much?>Have you tried not playing DND?It's not just DND.
>>96477302Exactly. Just like how Rogues are stuck being specialized in daggers or other weapons that they can backstab or sneak attack with. Some classes cover broader concepts than others.
>>96477401the more i look into classes, it seems FIGHTER is the one that should be retired or replaced since barbarian, ranger, paladin, and even rogue can cover the things you'd want out of your fighter anyways
>>96463223>Why are they always the weakest class?combination of MAD and their main gimmicks being part of the game that most players and dms want to handwave
>>96477426It goes back to how Ranger struggles to carve out a niche because Fighter exists. If Ranger is just a better Fighter with more skills/magic, then there's less reason to play a Fighter. So instead Ranger ends up getting stuck with less combat options to compensate.
>>96477498barbarians works as the brutish warriorpaladin works as the heavy plated knightranger works as the medium plated dexterous warrioreven rogue's swashbuckler acts as the wise cracking duelist fighter is really just "everyone else". and most people probably go into fighter thinking they want to make a heavy plated dude but don't want them to be religious which paladin doesn't need to be
I would like to present the hypothesis that the creation of /qst/ was detrimental to /tg/ as a whole.
generals are the only place on this board where you can get ontopic discussionthey stay
>>96473998Yes, trolls or autists are always a problem. The point is that generals give them INCENTIVE to form a discord that is an extension of the thread, and then becomes about the thread being an extension of the discord. I've seen this problem happen across multiple boards, discord babies screeching at each other for bucking the line and creating the next general thread in the sequence "ahead of schedule" and not putting the right things in the OP, or using the OP to force a meme, or otherwise violating their self-ascribed mandate. Like they are a HOA that you were forced to sign up with, patrolling to make sure that you don't paint your door the wrong color or you get a nasty letter and a threat. This mentality isn't possible outside of generals, because there is nothing for them to stake ownership of.
>>96474184Making a new thread early contributes to bloat, it's generally a good thing for them to wait until they're down on page 10 to make a new one. If they pull the trigger immediately when they hit autosage the old one will be hanging around for hours as it slowly descends.
The eternal seething of /qst/ posters never ceases to make me laugh.
>>96474494Seems like the majority of board users would be fine with quests on /tg/.
I know I'm already flirting with cringe because the whole Batman/Joker thing has been played out for like a decade now but I've been kicking around the idea of a Demiplane of Dread for D&D loosely based on Gotham (But probably more Victorian), Batman and Joker. Before you roll your eyes too hard, I've been kicking around the idea that the Not-Batman is a Straud-esque Dread Lord of the Plane. Why would a hero be a dread lord? Because he actively subjects the world the horrifying freaks of the domain by refusing to do anything to stop them permanently. He's well aware of the death and destruction, and he likes to wax poetic about the virtue of not killing, but there are inhabitants of this domain who have been almost murdered multiple times and have entire graveyards full of family members because he passively let them die. He will actively fight people trying to end villains harder than the villains themselves because they justify his existence.
Gotham as a Dread Domain, I get.Strahd as not!Bruce Wayne, I get.Van Richten as not!Batman, I get.But:>>96467317>>96470013>>96470170>freaks of not!Gotham cause death and destruction>not!Batman combats them>if he stopped, it would be even worse for the citizens>is not himself a monster terrorizing the citizens>the domain supplies villains for him to play out his personal vanity, and the whole situation just feeds his ego and sense of vindication: I don't think this is how the Dread Lord--Dread Domain thing is supposed to work.
>>96469896>The dark powers are not 100% evilThat's not what he said. "Deserved" was the word used.Soth, for instance, did monstrous things at both a personal level and an impersonal citizens-and-countryside level, as well as make unholy deals with dark gods.
>>96476325Disregard post, missed "jester is the dark lord"
>>96476277My reading of it was the other way around, where not!Batman shows up, treats all crimes extremely harshly, and creates those freaky villains in a very direct fashion by subjecting them to so much pain and fear that they snap. And not!Batman keeps whisking them away to his personal prison to torment them more, but keeps letting them loose either so he can boost his ego by hunting them down again, or so he can pretend that he's successfully rehabilitating people. If he stopped, then the cycle of new villains would also stop, and the populace could either execute or imprison any existing villains properly. The concept is basically the thing that people always accuse Batman of. That his existence creates supervillains, and he endangers lives by refusing to kill those villains. Except unlike the actual Batman, in this case it's very obviously and directly true.
>>96476308>did monstrous things at both a personal level and an impersonal citizens-and-countryside level, as well as make unholy deals with dark godsRegarding especially that last bit about dark gods, your head canon or Lowder's head canon? Certainly didn't happen in Dragonlance where the worst he did was kill his wife and newborn child and then slapped his girlfriend. Getting ragebaited by some lying elves into thinking his girlfriend was cheating on him and not committing suicide isn't monstrous.Soth on the Demi-plane of Dread is head canon.inb4: me saying that is itself my own head canon
