Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:

AD&D 1e has a really interesting DM guide, do you figure the advise is still applicable to 5e gamers?
>>
>>97851293
the DMG is essential reading for all
>>
>>97851293
If you truly understand the DMG, which is no easy task not only because it's written in High Gygaxian, but more importantly because a large chunk of what it tells you to do is completely unclear until you actually try it at the table for months if not years, your inevitable conclusion will be that it is completely irreconcilable with 5e.
>>
>>97851293
There's a lot in there that's relevant to any game you run, and a lot that's specific to 1e. And a lot of polearms. In any event, it's worth a careful going over or three.

Have there been any TTRPG systems in the past five years that have jumped to the top of your favorites? Anything that has replaced what you've been playing? This hobby just seems so stale with people talking about the same old systems, Dungeons and Dragons(Any edition), Pathfinder, blah blah blah that it's hard to tell when new blood actually enters the scene.

Outgunned replaced both 7th Sea & Feng Shui 2E for my crew.

Backed Cthulhutech: The SHadow War V2. Really awesome if you like symbionts and clandestine eldritch superheroes.

Trinity: Continuum replaced the original game for us, too.

Shadowrun Anarchy 2.0 is very good; I wish someone would build something similar for Eartdawn that isn't Age of Legends, but something similar to the core of Earthdawn, without being so complicated as 4E is.

Sentinels Comics replaced Marvel Heroic, but that was the same design team.

For me, I play different fantasy games than D&D based on what I want out of a game. I have physical copies of BREAK!!, Exalted Essence, the Fabula Ultima line, Savage Worlds, & Swords of the Serpentine. I also have PDFs of BoL/Everywhen, C20, GrimWild, Nimble, Unity, When the Moon Hangs Low, & Wildsea.

I also really enjoy generic/broad-spectrum games: I have PDFs of 3D&T Victory, Forthright, Mythic D6, OVA 2E, Prowlers & Paragons UE, & Tri-Stat Core.

Youre the first person I've heard of actually playing Anarchy 2.0, can you give us a capsule review? I'm very interested from what I read.
>>
Previously I'd played and run 3.5, Dark Heresy, and Pathfinder, but wound up playing 5e because nothing else was available/viable. three years ago I switched over to Dungeon Crawl Classics and its various hacks; haven't looked back once.
>>
>>97851727
I haven't managed to get it to the table for more than a one-shot.

I have mixed feelings. I wasn't one of the folks who thought the first version was 'incomplete; most people were expecting a menu of Shadow Amps out of the gate to emulate the current edition (5E at the time). I enjoyed the freedom to build things that were a stretch in the core game. SA 2.0 is exactly what folks wanted from the original game. It is packed with examples and is far more codified; I prefered the looser aproach of the original. Most people will be far more satisfied with SA2.0; I find it harder to use. It is also not available yet outside of the folks who backed the game, and there is currently no ETA on when the PDF will be publicly available and printed books may be months away. It is good. It is solid. It is more codified. My crew enjoyed the game we played. Stuff is missing, like full rules for Technomancers, no Drakes or other shapeshifters, no clades of the various meta-types. That stuff is likely comming. But if you want a stripped down Shadowrun that is mostly complete in one book, SA2.0 is a solid choice. If you prefere a looser, more narrative take, grab the original or Neon City Overdrive and the supplements.
>>
>>97843733
I used to have one of those dice with a 8 instead of a 6. It must have been some sort of mutant.

Why is "Don't overprepare" such common advise given to DMs? sometimes it seems like people are allergic to putting effort into building adventures. Railroading typically happens when a DM is underprepared for their sessions.

This is the first miniature I have ever painted. Tomorrow I'm painting the right pauldrons of the squad of 3 and then varnishing.

Then I'm going to try my hand at two imperial officers.

Say something nice about it.

You did good on your first miniature.
Please varnish and store it somewhere safe so as you continue painting minis you can look back at your first miniature and feel good about how much you've improved.

I can't find my first painted miniature and I regret that deeply.

Thanks! I feel like I fucked up the drybrushing, which contributed to the slop-job, and I suck ass at detailing so the black went everywhere and I had to constantly try to switch to white to cover up my mistakes.

These are part of the Imperial Assault board game, so as long as I have that, I know my first minis will be preserved. Going to varnish them tomorrow after I've painted the pauldrons, I just need to decide on colors.

Pretty good for a first try, White ist notoriously hard to work with.

Oh yeah one last big thing. Some of the support might seem odd because borreload savage is banned in the TCG but not in the OCG. Personally I think it could come back but it's maybe for the best to have it banned.
The card was a part of pile decks that just put out as many negates as possible making for shit games and where the stigma of "yugioh is just a bunch of negates and combo slop" came from. Apollousa, Baronne, Savage, and co. all got banned a while back in the TCG.
>>
>>97846050
If you left roughly 6 years ago then that would mean you left around the time that Master Rule 4 was being phased out, where in MR5 the link zoning restrictions no longer apply. If you didn't like MR4 then you should maybe consider it.

Don't buy cards until you're sure that you want to. Use the free sims like Edopro and Omega to experiment.

Don't experiment until you've actually watched current games play out. Spectate some games with the aforementioned free sims, or watch some YCS coverage on Youtube. We've been getting more archetypal handtraps that enable you to play the game on "turn 0" (turn 1 when you lose the diceroll) and compact engines that have few or no restrictions, that can thus be splashed together with oneanother.

Sky Striker is still Meta Viable.

Basically, the game has become more interactive, and many of the restrictions you'd see from ~2019/2020 have been toned down. Decide whether or not that's something you like or not, watch some replays, then make that decision.
>>
>>97846714
He's warning him because rokket has absolutely no lines under fuwalos and purulia, it's not like white forest ie a combo deck that can stop after summoning 2-3 interactions, it HAS to go full retard every single time because they can't make half boards, they literally do not have a single endboard piece that can be turbo'd out in as few summons as possible.
And it's even worse in TCG where they can't just stop at borrelend and savage (the later is banned, you're giving the opponent at least 5 draws with this board by the way).
>>
>>97850877
You're setting the bar for what's "good" at what can play well into charmies which is basically telling him to pick something in the meta because the bar for being meta is also set by the charmies now.
Again, all of this applies to just about every casual deck (which is was he explicitly asked for too). If he wants his flavor of casual deck to be rokket then I'd say he should go for it.
Even most of yester-years meta decks that we say cannot come back yet would eat shit into charmies.
TLDR you're setting the bar for a good casual deck way too high, at being basically meta, which is unrealistic for A CASUAL DECK.
>>
3 Questions

Why there wasnt more support for the felgrand archtype or it would have it in the future?

Any spoiler or let about a next THE CHRONICLES DECK?

Any recepit for a "pure" lightsworn deck it doesnt have to be meta

What happened to people posting their models in this thread?
>>
>>97851768
I’ve been painting my tree lord really slowly, not sure if people want to see me post a wip every time I pop in here. I’ll post it in the morning at least.
>>
The idea of a 1000 year timeskip where all the models stay the same and technology doesn’t advance at all is really funny when one of the criticisms people have about nuCoS is how they superficially look like a regression from the tech level the empire models had
>>
>>97851809
Tbf they had a reform that makes it so they can adapt to battles easier realm wide which caused the new regressed tech and uniforms. But yeah the tech is all over the place, I mean shit, they had revolvers in 2e. Although now they have fuckin flamethrowers, which isn’t exactly a completely advanced concept, I think the Byzantine empire had the idea down, and the Greeks did have their fire, though that’s an entirely different method iirc.
>>
>>97851839
The new stuff is mostly on par or more advanced than what they had, like the cannons are breach loaded, they just look more archaic because of the aesthetic GW went for. More specialized units like the fusil-major and callis, or these new guys, have more “advanced” looking guns, while the fusils are supposed to be easily operatable hand cannon weapons that can blow holes in orruks or chaos warriors.

The idea they’re still using those reforms and same exact weapons after 1000 years and teleporting to a new setting without iterating on them is silly, but I guess so is the idea of dawnbringer crusades in general when they amounted to nothing in the end and the rest is purely just using cities that existed before them. Literally less lasting impact than Kragnos

If you want to plan your turns far in advance or get pissy about bad things happening to you, you'll hate it. Only get Nemesis if you want an unfair, theme-heavy survival game and have players who enjoy suffering.

Anon the game isn't out for at least a fucking month. The only people who even have models are the ones who got them at Adepticon or got the special promo Zeratul. Nobody can play the game without extensive proxy work.
The best we can do is theorycraft and speculate.
>>
>>97851589
The rules are free online dumbass. Anyone can play it right now but nobody is.
>>
>>97851678
The fuck do you think the value proposition of the ruleset run with proxies is? Hell, how much traffic in threads for wargames that DO frequently use proxies is about official models alone rather than the ruleset? Fact of the matter is that the product isn't out yet, and so neither is most of the draw for traffic.
>>
>>97851696
Anyone willing to dump money into miniatures for a new game would be playing it right now to familiarize themselves with it so they aren't a complete nuisance dragging on games when they actually do get to play it in person. No one is though because they have zero confidence in ever getting to play it for real unless they split a starter with a friend to be their life starcraft tmg partner (no homo).
>>
>>97835298
>Protoss kinda got written into a hole by getting slammed hard in their SC campaign and then being the first campaign in BW, letting the Terran and Zerg campaigns walk over them.
It was disappointing playing StarCraft for the first time as a kid and being intrigued by the protoss, then playing their campaign to discover a whole lot of nothing. They were an advanced alien race with a long history of psionic development alongside technological innovation with a neat aesthetic and distinct culture (it also helped that this was when Blizzard put out some of its best dialogue, never to be topped). Pretty cool, but in the game they feel like such an afterthought; it's not a stretch to say the devs were more interested in fleshing out the Terrans and Zerg. All of the neat little details in-game and in the manual were just dropped. The protoss have a very stratified society, but we never see anything besides Aldaris as the sole representative of the Conclave, and the templar. They are a galaxy spanning empire, but have no vassals and seem to be completely hamstrung by the loss of Aiur. I get that it's the homeworld, but losing one planet shouldn't be the catastrophic loss it's treated as in the campaign. It feels more like Aiur was their only planet.

But Cursed City had pimpin' minis, far better than Dogwater.
Black Fortress too.
>>
The original and silver tower were honestly the only really good ones. Darkwater tried capturing the gloomhaven audience but the fucking lead for it quit after the game was shown off which shows how confident he was in it. Cursed city was a chore but I really liked the setting, black stone fortress was all around boring. But I don’t like sci fi stuff, at least not when it’s so British.
>>
>>97849827
I didn't play all of them, but I liked Blackstone Fortress and Cursed City, Darkwater was bad imo.
>>
>>97849827
My group played the heck out of Blackstone fortress and the expansions. Then we got Cursed City. We played through the base game with some modifications so we didn't have to suffer through constant rescue missions, hunts and scavenge missions. It was bad but we stuck it out to finish the base game. I changed the end text so as Radukar started to transform we all just kept attacking him instead of watching slack-jawed and the bastard was hacked to pieces and the witch hunter burned the remains while the priestess and the mage sealed the tomb so nothing could ever ever bring him back. The end, hard stop and no sequel because fuck playing more of this pointless game.

People want equality of representation because it is important, you want it because you're horny. There's a difference.

Heracles is the only singleplayer build
>>
>>97851747

But I'm engaging in "multiplayer" with my Willow chatbot as we speak

I still think of it as that.
But Observation and Armament are English. I don't know why. I guess it's just because so much more emphasis is put on "Haoshoku no haki!"

Seems a little rude to call the theory 'nonsense' and 'what the hell' worthy. I think Fireblade having a hybridized or at least chimeric biology explains a few things in comic such as Alex's ability to perceive her, and the fact that her psychic aura is red-orange whereas every single other loroi is simple cyan. Or the author statement that she's childless. She might not be reproductively compatible with the loroi species anymore despite the empire having a manifest interest in reproducing her potential.

The Umiak have encountered the Historians before and have had the time and experience and technological level to develop a modicum of security. They were confident enough of their ships' systems ability to overcome the Historians that they launched an occupation force through Historian space, successfully seizing worlds without glassing them, until driven out of much of Historian space--by Loroi forces. The Loroi are also aware of the fact that the Historian construct's projector was aboard the shuttle but did not deploy it as an asset, despite putting it aboard the shuttle in recognition of it being an IT hazard; this indicates either unwillingness or inability, since ignorance can be ruled out. The human dataslate must be an unexpected special case of being just good enough to host the bot while being insecure enough to be infectored, and Umiak ships postdating their invasion through Historian space must be a nonspecial case of adequate cyberwar hardening. The virus would presumably have acted to seize the Umiak ship independently of Alex's intentions if it were possible for it to do so, since it is an agent of its own agenda and not a purely reactive extension of Alex's will.

Tempo's mindhax and especially her now-unspoilered char sheet's sensor dampening EM hax can be assumed to be the only way this could have worked.

>unspoilered char sheet
Wait the char sheet changed? Cool.

But the Umiak gene-editing theory is stil very far fetched.

I think your theory is valid, but at least for why Fireblade has a different aura, I would lean towards the explanation that it is genuinely what her psychic presence is, and that Alex either has a special bond with her or that Fireblade's aura is powerful enough that even Alex can pick it up. Hasn't it been mentioned that Loroi "true" names usually reference their psychic presence and that their spoken names are basically shortened versions of that? In that case her name would just be a reflection of what Alex is able to sense.

The Umiak show as pale white(ish), it'd make little sense for Umiak plus Loroi to suddenly become super bright and powerful.
The color is just her untrainable unsheathed psy powers.

Also, she is described as 'talking psychically in her sleep', which is somehow what Alex saw/felt.
