This book alone (well, Elric's comics also had some influence) convinced me of the three point alignment system superiority and that the two-axis stuff is gay af. The sheer fucking gravitas of Law vs Chaos setting fire to the enterity of creation is unmatched, and adding more cosmic forces into the mix just weakens the conflict.

Do you allow demihuman classes? While I know that theater bullshit is frowned upon heavily, not sure how can you marry playable elves with mystic elves without making both separate subspecies.

Nope!

Yup. A reason why I decided to stick to humans only. However, I did create a custom human version of the spellsword with the Player Companion's guidelines since I quite like the trope.

Welcome back, revered clerk of the Administratum.
Your efforts in compiling the information on [Vokaris Sector] and its eight subsectors have been received with satisfaction, and thus you are encouraged to continue your holy assignment to collect information about this sector in our grand Imperium.
A brief reminder that as data comes in via the servitors around you, you will have to compile it and make this sector whole again.
May the God Emperor continue to guide you clerk Anon.

Hello there, Anons of /tg/. If anyone is still interested in this fun project, here is the whole sector - updated with the discovered planets so far - where we can continue to create together, using the planet generator found on 1d6chan.

The guy running CoS here

Every session we get closer to eventually meeting madam Eva and every session I hate the idea of a fated ally more and more.
I want the players to naturally gain allies or enemies depending on how they act, not have a "fated ally" they already know I will force into the plot.
I think I'll just skip that part outright, maybe put something else in its place of the reading.

>>96646465
You can still have their decisions matter, but the nature of how their fated ally assists them can vary based on that. They don't have to be ride-or-die. They can choose to help out based on the players doing something for them, just be in the right place at the right time, or even unintentionally help the players even if the fated ally has no plans to aid them long term.
A twist of fate can be rendered in many ways, and you're only limited by your own interest in manipulating the reading.

Muh fantasy game is 3.11 gigabytes . Feature rich and lean. How bad can it be? We got:

-heroic combat that is more strategic than tactical leaning into action economy more than the grid , emphasizing more hybrid characters than strict roles adds a ton of depth
-a faction and domain system that generates plots to intrude on live games and to make the world evolve around the players based directly on their actions
-loot fiesta
- a rich monster manual with very consistant math that enables quickly collecting or building monsters allowing a truly freeform experience for players with big heads
- comfy dungeon synth soundtrack

Looking at my list I think the marauder might be the single most under cooked class.

This class is meant to be a spellcaster with the ability to rage. When you rage you randomly attack either the lowest HP or highest HP enemy nearby - unlike the 6? other barbarian type classes you have by far the weakest rage, where you only get +2 to critical threat. Only 11 spells and the kit creating talents do not offer much exciting. You can get a necromancer's animal companion , an alternate rage type as a once a day- just not alot going on here. Their spellbook is only 11 spells, a few summons, a few buffs and debuffs and several nukes that only target specific creature types. All of the spells are dallies, no at-wills or encounter spells. The summons are high damage melee summons that function without your interaction , not alot of synergy here. The spell list vaugely reminds me of the 3.5 hexblade? As in its very do nothing. I could expand this class by borrowing abilitys from ToME's doomblade, CoA's Knight of Xoroth and the Marauder from FF14. Letting it talent into antipaladin weapon runes could lead into a good viking theme.
>>
Alongside the marauder we have the Barbarian 1, Barbarian 2, Grunt, Templar, Bezerker, Savage and Fury ( I might rename this class to the Warshaman ) - these classes occupy a similar class fantasy ( You could arguably say Slayer, Abomination and Avenger are tangentially related too )

The fury has themed rages and rage strikes like a 4e barb.
Templar and Grunt can rage in each combat but it activates at random, with the odds going up during a fight. Templars are quick and a bit divinely and primally magical. Grunts are very tanky and have more battlefield control tools. Simple Classes. Barbarian 1 had a extremely powerful rage that was once for day with low odds on recharging - people rightfully found this design toxic and this is why we have so many kinds of barbarian now. Barbarian 2 has a much weaker rage but it has both on demand and random raging . The Bezerker eschews the normal team accuracy mechanic for random bursts of power and assigns his skills to his random power level - i think this class is effective for how chaotic it is . The Savage stacks a rage pool that becomes a damage bonus that he can cash in for healing or abilities - one of the best classes in the game . The Fury has daily themed rages and can expend them to do a themed strike afterwards. More elemental damage and weird movement options in this class.

Gygax was always fond of barbarians right? It may seem silly to have 8 versions of one core class. I should create some kind of 'mad at the destiny dice' mechanic for raging out of combat . Mad at domain play. Hmmmm

I have been interested in oozes/slimes as of late. They appear as a monster type in D&D, Path/Starfinder, 13th Age, Draw Steel (in the starter adventure and Patreon bonus content), and Daggerheart, among other games.

Exotic and high-level ooze monsters include living spells in D&D; teratomorphs in D&D 3.0; astral renders in D&D 4e; blobs of annihilation in D&D 5e; mezlans, immortal ichors, and blights in Pathfinder; riftcreepers and oblivions in Pathfinder 1e; living apocalypses and cerebrexes in Starfinder 1e; and gray goos and plasma oozes in Path/Starfinder 1e. Shoggoths could count as oozes, and they appear as such in Pathfinder 1e.

Named ooze antagonists include Juiblex, Ghaunadaur, and Turaglas in D&D; the daelkyr Kyrzin in Eberron; the Voidharrow in D&D 4e; and Vorgozen and the suspiciously named Jubilex in Pathfinder 1e.

There are ooze-themed PC options every now and then, such as the oozemaster and slime lord prestige classes in D&D 3.X, the ooze master theme in D&D 4e, the plasmoid species in D&D 5e, the alchemist (oozemaster) and shifter (oozemorph) archetypes in Pathfinder 1e, the Oozemorph archetype in Pathfinder 2e, and the entu colony and selamid races in Starfinder 1e. I observed that an ooze race was popular in third-party Pathfinder 1e material, such as Alluria Publishing's squole and Dreamscarred Press's atstreidi and coreid; I once played alongside someone playing a coreid psionicist at 17th level.

The only dedicated ooze-themed adventure I know of is The Slithering in Pathfinder 2e. I believe it was poorly received, as its mechanics were questionable and frustrating: particularly the focus on oozes and incorporeals, whose precision damage immunity is unfun for several classes.

While it is common to see demons, devils, dragons, or undead as campaign-wide enemies, it is much rarer to see oozes in such a role. Perhaps intelligent oozes could be portrayed similarly to the Klyntar?

What are your favorite portrayals of oozes in tabletop RPGs?

I have a hard time appreciating cosmic horror. It comes up in certain tabletop RPGs, everywhere from the Cthulhusphere to some depictions of aberrations in D&D and Pathfinder, such as the daelkyr and Xoriat in Eberron.

What really makes me lose my interest is whenever cosmic horror writing overuses explicit mentions of mad[dening/ness], [sane/sanity/insane/insanity], [ineffable/indescribable], some variation of "understanding of [the world/reality]," and so on. It feels stilted to me. It feels like more telling than showing. It feels like the author desperately trying to tell me how cool and scary something is. I cannot pinpoint precisely why, but I cannot appreciate this brand of writing.

Worst of all is when "Well, their goals are inscrutable" is used to justify a seeming lack of motives.

Is there a variety of cosmic horror, particularly in tabletop RPGs, that is less in-your-face about this subject?

horror, much like comedy, is a product of context and must continually "up the ante" to keep up with the passage of time. shock is key, and things that would terrify an audience in the 1920s would leave a jaded 2020s audience completely unphased.

kind of like how video games have gradually broken the fourth wall more and more often to get an emotional response from a playerbase that has already seen it all

Probably the main thing to do would be to have the cosmic horror threat be something in the peripheral with the occasional "Hey, we're still here and a threat." but never expounded upon
>>
>>96640817
Back when I played more call of cthulhu, there were two things I used to try to beat this. I think "horror" in RPGs comes mostly from anticipation of badness, or realisation of how fucked the situation is or how poor your available options are.

Using sanity points more like health damage. You can't make people fear the deep ones they've read about fifteen times, but you can make your players fear the inevitable loss of a precious resource that they know is coming. For this to work you need to make san loss unpredictable and san gain exceedingly rare so that they fear what might happen, but are (usually) relieved when it doesn't.

Secondly, using moments of revelation to reveal a worsening of problems. My players spent one session dealing with an ancient evil amulet. The next session they went to a museum displaying an archaeological dig of about thirty of them. This got a nervous reaction as they realised there was some organisation behind what they had previously assumed to be a one-off and started theorising about what would be behind it. Later in the session (after destroying most of the amulets) they realised that the amulets were for sealing a worse ancient evil. This also got a good groan out of them as they realised how bad they'd made things.
>>
>>96640817
I don't want to spoil it for you, but Murder Drones has to do with a cosmic horror who fucks with the mental state of it's victims through manipulation, abuse and confusion. And the show has a WHOLE LOT of show-not-tell. You have to rewatch the episodes multiple times and pause often to really understand what is going on.
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLHovnlOusNLiJz3sm0d5i2Evwa2LDLdrg
The pilot filters people. It gets better.

Miniatures suck, are too expensive, take too long to paint, and don't do what minis need to do in tabletop RPGs -- THEY AREN'T MODULAR.

If you start a campaign and your fighter begins with studded leather and a shortsword, you'll probably have splint by level 3 and a great-axe by level 4.

And now your miniature sucks and doesn't look like your character. So instead we need MODULAR minis - like LEGO block minifigures.

I have hundreds of cheap ripoff LEGO minifigs for my 5e 2024 D&D campaign now. They have tradeable armors, weapons, helmets, hair, pants, shields, etc. And the badguy monsters for the campaign are massive and huge (and cheap).

Pic is a $2 custom knight. If my players kill one, they can take the armor and wear it on their minifig, and now their minifigure looks completely different.

(I made a video on the topic but the mods don't want videos posted in /tg/ for some strange reason).

It's typical for chinese designs.
Gunpla community has simmilar attitude towards chinese model kits. I've seen them nicknamed "hedgehogs" for how pointy, gaudy and needlessly busy they are.

I have a friend who would design his homebrewed hero quest using lego minifigs and it worked much better with classic lego pieces since they are already so abstract.

Are there good "make your own" paper mini programs now?

I really think the VTTs will soon do the same, and make it so you can spend hours in the character creator before Session 1. I prefer to actually have a stand-up on top of the tv screen though, but still.

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to TSR-era D&D, derived systems, and compatible content.

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons as played in the game's first decade — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching meta-plots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started.

Buying equipment and gear is by far the slowest part of char gen, so equipment packages are great for cutting down on time that could otherwise be spent playing. I have six premade equipment packs for each class to roll on (just weapons and armor sets, with a few quirky things here and there) and then everyone rolls or chooses twice on a d20 list of adventuring gear. Works great for me
>>
>>96640357
I think equipment packages are the best way to sped up chargen as long as they are mostly conocerned with small, misc shit like clothing, tools and rations. Important stuff like armor and weapons should be bought directly, specially in AD&D where weapon types actually matter.

Isn't there a dedicated kill team general? This general is for all the games that have a fraction of Kill Teams popularity

>Where do you get your terrain from? Or how do you make it?
From a Necromunda-centric POV official GW terrain is just too damn good to ignore. It's taken me like ~10 years to get all the pieces I want, because of how expensive and feels-bad it is to actually fork over for. But once it's all arrayed there's an insane amount of great "urban" or "industrial" stuff that they've gradually put out through the years.

The Sector Mechanicus pieces + walkways mixed with KT Bheta Decima walkways are the core of my collection. I can also do an interior setting with Zone Mortalis and Gang Stronghold sets.

There have been many good standalone/scatter pieces like the Haemotrope Reactor, Thermic Plasma Regulators, etc. The classic Munitorum containers, promethium barrels and munitorum crates (augmented by like 4-5 other types of crates they're released since). Titanicus industrial terrain also produces great scatter.

There's also a bunch of Kill Team stuff that makes great standalone/scatter: Plasma Generatoriums, the Moroch landing pad and radar dish/comms tower thing... I have like 3-4 Sector Fronteris buildings because I like "intact" structures for Necromunda and not just ruins.

Also get a lot of mileage out of several 40K vehicles that make good static terrain; the little servitor/crane set, a Goliath Rockfucker, an Arvus Lighter, etc.

But I also have a ton of non-GW stuff. Plenty of 3d prints ofc. 3 or 4 MDF buildings from Sarissa to have larger sized intact buildings than GW makes. Recently converted the MCP Sanctum Sanctorum into an Enforcer precinct and bought the MCP Hydra generator set. A lot of bridge pieces from the model railroad world to serve as platforms between elevated spots. A couple of HO scale plastic buildings I bought cheap and converted. Random generic odds and ends from historicals, like some WWII-ish tents.

How the fuck does this even work?
I wanted to try giving Twilight 2000 a go, but Im having a hard time finding a group and I don't feel ready yet to be a GM.
Then i noticed some people mentioning that they like playing it solo, but i don't really understand.
Isn't the whole point of this to play with people?
How do you handle being a GM controlling everything trying to kill the player if you are also the payer?
How do you handle the unravelling story of a module or a campaign as a player if you already know it as a GM?
What's really stopping you from fudging your own rolls every time so you win all the time?
Whats the point of roleplaying if you are basically mumbling by yourself?
How do you get fun out of this?
Im not really sure if I should give it a go, or instead just try to do my homework and attempt to be a GM for once.

It's basically an adult version of playing with dolls/lego/whatever toys you had, plus you need some kind of engine or oracle to add some randomness. Not that different than single player video games, I suppose.
But generally I don't get the appeal either, to me RPGs are just much more enjoyable with people around. Different folks different strokes I guess.

I feel like this is an aphantasia discussion, where people who cannot understand mental visualization are just incredulous and outraged that other people are telling them about something they can naturally do without difficulty. It's as if this retarded anon cannot even begin to comprehend how someone could honestly enjoy something they don't understand.

The problem with Angron is that Khorne is too one note. Have him act with some actual honor or respect. Maybe have Khorne be the least ‘chaotic’ chaos god, their faction honest in its dealings. Have Angron empower weak humans or their worlds, or aid in starting rebellions against the Imperium. Let him ‘save’ vulnerable worlds only for the inquisition to wipe them out anyway.

Instead of just yoinking him away from his buddies to die, have the Emperor and co arrive above Nuceria too late to save anyone worth saving other than Angron, and judge the planet itself to be beyond hope of redemption. Angron just wants to die with the rest of his brothers and sisters in a final blaze of glory; the Emperor wants to save his son and rescues him via teleporter (he does not deploy Custodes or Marines to the surface because it'd just be a waste of life- or at least ammunition- just to kill a few scumbags in person when Angron can be rescued "cleanly" much more easily for literally no downside).
I'd also make Big E much less cold towards Angron, actively trying to reach out to his son. Perhaps he eventually decides he is a lost cause, but not out of callousness; the realization he cannot save Angron causes him unimaginable grief and pain, the kind that would destroy a lesser man- the fact he has to try and keep going makes him appear heartless to others, when the truth is he cannot afford to be seen as weak when in private, he weeps for his mutilated son..
On Angron's part, there is a rational part of him that understands the Emperor's decision to save him was the right one (or at least done out of good intent), that loves him as a father and wants to keep living so his comrades' deaths were not in vain. Unfortunately the Nails are slowly destroying his brain, and the literal permanent neurological damage combined with the trauma of his life on Nuceria and the grief of his fellow rebels' deaths mean he gradually loses the rational side of himself, until eventually it just doesn't exist anymore; not that he's just a snarling animal, but rather that the part of him that loved his father has been convinced by the Nails it never existed, and his heart has become a vessel for bottomless hatred- of the Emperor, of mankind, and of himself.
TLDR: Keep the self loathing and brain damage but with actual tragedy instead of Big E being rarted and evil.
