I never write my roleplays in a novelistic style.
My logs are always more like a list of actions and effects with most of the creative stuff being held in my head.
Ironsworn systems are ofc an exception but I don't think they lead to writing that would actually be good in a novel. Too much constant fucking up, you'd end up with one of those annoying stories where a protagonist can't walk between towns without it being an ordeal.
And even there every 2nd/3rd line in my notes is stuff like "Action 3, Challenge 7 3 Burn momentum Weak Hit" so it's not exactly great reading.
>>
>>96763316
I like those games. But as

Anyone got experience with Space Aces? I've just skimmed through it a bit, but I liked the large amount of tables and such. But I think the character creation is way too bare and thin. Not sure if I want to mix it with something else. The d20+d6 didn't seem too bad

No preference, but average is boring. And it doesn't just apply to Dream Pod 9's Appearance stat. Had a blast playing a PF 1st edition 3 Intelligence sorcerer. Had a blast playing a wizard's that's opposed.

As long as I've got a weakness that does show up from time-to-time, be it a stat, a flaw like Shadowrun's Codes of Honor (God I loved that one) and remain mechanically viable / can contribute meaningfully, I'm golden.

I have no preference, it depends on my character concept for the day.
>>
>>96763764
I have no charisma and can't competently roleplay it so 90% of the time ugly or monster characters. I don't try to flirt in-character etc and leave that for other players too. I guess my characters would come across as ugly and asexual or autistic.

Honestly I'm tired of muh eldritch cults and the lovecraftian mythos in horror. No one is genuinely scared or creeped out by them. People may gloat about how much of an intellectual idea cosmic horror is; being overwhelmed by the vastness of the universe and feeling powerless, blah blah blah.

Satanic cabals, witch covens and pagan cults do give people the creeps. Voodoo dolls, human sacrifices, blood rituals, hidden groves with celtic ruins, secret societies, actual ghosts and demons instead of otherworldly beings who don't give a shit about mankind. Horns and blood scare people more than tentacles and ooze.

And Lovecraft is so 20s... I don't get your point.

>>96764962
> Lovecraftian entities are essentially just concepts or archetypes which are fully independent from humanity; things like Void, Eternity, Abyss, or Expanse.

Not a single one of them is. Where did you even get that from? What is scary about "not being at the top of the food chain" in space and hwo does that translate into gaming at the table? Witches, demons and pagan cults with minor deities are localized insidious threats as opposed to cosmic entities who most of the time mind their own business.

>>96763823
Good luck playing that

>>96763734
I did read AND play Lovecraft. I just grew tired of the reddit meme of the eldritch cult and the cosmic entities. Demons are creepier.

Just because the deities of the Mythos don't care about humans doesn't mean humans can't run into them and be immensely harmed in their wake.
Hell, one of the two starter scenarios the Call of Cthulhu rulebook gives you directly involves a Great Old One, Gla'aki, who makes an appearance at the scenario's end point and can start swatting the player characters down like bugs. And, I mean, the original "The Call of Cthulhu" story itself ends with a chase scene as sailors flee an awakening Cthulhu lest he crush them to death or feast on them as his morning snack.
A problem with a lot of pastiches of Lovecraft's works is that they're afraid to use the gods or involve them, which just isn't Lovecraftian. In the original works, the gods showed up or interacted with the characters all the time. They just largely didn't care, acting out their grander, more terrible functions, and the harm they cause is simply because they're too powerful and beyond us to want to be careful about us. A wayward flick of their wrist can destroy our entire civilization and they wouldn't notice.

The /btg/ is dead! Long live the /btg/!

How do you insert Pathfinders in btech? I assume you drop them in way in advance of the raid on the far from where a garrison would patrol. But the locals are gonna know something is up. Also your Pathfinders have to cover a lot of ground to get to what they need to recon. Is there a way around this?

Empire of Mu Edition

>What is this?
/TG/ DEVELOPED A GAME
IT IS PLAYABLE. IT HAS BEEN PLAYED.
EXPEDITION is a ~1880s era, Jules Verne-inspired retro-futurist, underground blood soaked adventurescape.
It is a Skirmish wargame. Two players with their own expeditions, on a hexgrid map, explore & fight each other for victory and profit.

3 versions of the rules exist, 2 of which have been playtested. The main one is 2e, to be found :

Atlan Anon, there is no nice way to say this, but I think this is bloat. I simply do not see what this adds to the game or the lore, everything about it just seems awkward and unnecesary. Especially if they're not even going to be anti-British. It's not egregious to the point where I'd heavily oppose it, it just makes me feel nothing followed by mild annoyance that it exists only to make me feel nothing.
>>
>>96766086
From all the suggestions about the the Second Oriental Crisis, I would say that the rising was indeed massive, and it affected all lands that once belonged to the Ottoman Empire, with varying degrees of intensity (Anatolia having almost all of the dead rising from their graves, while areas like Tunisia or the danubian border having little to no effect, with the threat to them being the hordes of undead moving to them). However, this event was probably planned somewhat, though probably rushed due to the events at the beginning of the crisis. And to mantain some sort of balance, whatever Murad did to rise ALL of the dead without direct necromantic intervention cannot be just used again and again. Now, if you want to resurrect the dead, you need necromancers directly working with the corpses.

This way, the power of the husks is more balanced, both in numbers and in logistics.

I'm new to this and I have questions!

Is this a classless system?
How crunchy is it?
How does it handle battles?
How high is the risk of mortality?
>>
>>96766343
The game takes place in the 19th century, a rigid class society.
It's not crunchy at all, I just let my opponent do all the calculations for me.
The system is very combat-heavy and lethal, half my characters die every game.
Hi, I'm the resident shitposter. Serious answer: it's a skirmish wargame, not an RPG.

why would that be a controversial opinion?
>>96765422
not the anon you replied to, but:
>game where you can optionally do one thing (spend a key), then must do one out of 2 actions (buy card or get flipped card)
>game where you have to manage a hand of cards and have to choose one among 4 distinct actions (buy, play a technique, make a stack, discard) and some things give you more actions
>the first game "takes longer to explain" than the second one
I know that 9 out of 10 users that say "overcomplicated mess" are either complete, unironic retards or unfunny people who take the explanation, no matter how curt or plain it is, as a confirmation that it is indeed an "overcomplicated mess", but come on

Grand Austria Hotel with the Allez Waltz expansion gets pretty heavy. There's asymmetric player powers and alternate shared boards. It's also great base or base + skeleton key module at 4 players.

>English has no synonyms for the Sun
Fuck. What do?
>>
>>96765317
Shift it around a bit so that the manifestations align with more meaningful day-to-day symbols/phenomena, maybe even divide the God into three faces or aspects.
Replace the Sun with the Dawn
>Represents the victory of light over darkness and the eternal nature of the Father of Light, who returns every day to bask his Children in holy light
Replace the Lightning Bolt with the Storm
>Even though Storms bring darkness to the sky, they themselves are full of light - for the Father's divine judgement is indeed fearsome. By bearing witness to this power the Children understand the depths of our Father's might - and through ritual and libations we pray keep his fury at bay.
Replace the Candlelight with the Hearth
>Do not presume that the fires of men are our own creation; we owe everything to the Father of Light. Though his grace, we are given the gift of Light and warmth unto ourselves.
Or something like that, this is just what came to my mind.
>>
>>96757752
Yes, exactly. That is, unless his own future sight didn't tip him off beforehand.

Any battles between time controllers becomes really confusing to talk about because both are changing reality by forestalling each other's moves. It only makes sense if you assume different timelines.

Let's say a wizard lives in a tower, upper floor. He sleeps there every night. Let's say for simplicity he teleports there.
One night I travel back in time before the wizard move in and demolish the tower.
Will he fall to his death in the present I traveled from, or he will do so when he first time teleported into the non-existent top floor?
>>
I always run into problem of "what they do day in and day out" especially for warrior and long-lived races. Let alone long-lived warrior races.
Take Giants, for instance. They are these mighty sages, who created Dwarfs in ages past. They don't farm, don't hunt, don't really build anymore (Dwarfs serve their needs, basically). They ponder the orb, guide the dwarfs (but not rule) and fight great evils. But that leaves them with zero hobbies or activities. They don't even have to train, due to their nature.

And then there are Sky Giants, who don't even eat, and don't hang out around Dwarves most of the time.

Of course I could just leave their activities a mystery, but I want to know for myself!

I played a sixteen year old girl (Human Evocation Wizard) who was adopted by a very, very wealthy family of elves to give her a proper education. She has a schizophrenic stat line (4 4 18 20 18 4), horrible social skills, and views herself as the party leader because she's the smartest (she is). Because of the fact that she has the equivalent to a masters and a pair of bachelor's degrees at 16, I have to play her as socially stunted who has her best moments when using her brain or launching spells. While Fireballs and Sickening Radiance may seem repetitive, it is fun watching big number go out. I love my little wizard.

File: Eldritch Blast.jpg (29 KB, 238x238)

Can someone explain Eldritch Blasts to me narratively? I'm assuming Forgotten Realms because it's the default, but if anyone has thoughts on it for other settings, that's welcome too.

What confuses me is that I understand most people in-universe wouldn't necessarily distinguish people based on Class because that's a purely mechanical category. Like people might look at a Barbarian, Fighter, or Fighter2/Rogue1 as just a warrior, soldier, or knight, while they might look at a sorcerer and a wizard and see two mages. However, at what point do mechanics cross over into narrative and vice versa?

What I mean is, Eldritch Blast is uniquely a Warlock spell. Not just a spell, but a central feature of the class (which for some reason is optional), so while an average person wouldn't be able to tell the difference, wouldn't any knowledgeable mage be able to see an Eldritch Blast being cast and instantly be able to tell that "hey, that person must've made a pact with some kind of being" or something like that?

Pretty new to DnD/tabletop so please don't tear me a new one for stupid questions.
>>
>>96766499
An eldritch blast, in-world, can be flavored different. Seeing a colored blast of force come out of a guy's hand doesn't necessarily tell you what the spell is. Your average person might make assumptions about how they gained their spells, but even a highly learned Wizard wouldn't necessarily know. It's not like NPCs and lore characters are stuck to the same rigid class feature/spell list structure as player characters. Standardization for the sake of gameplay doesn't equate to a universal lore standard.
>>
>>96766097

Welcome to the 4Chan /g/ usenet group Thread! Now appearing on /tg/.

>What is /usenet/?
Open protocols still exist and are what the internet was built on (http, irc, rss, ftp, etc). Not owned by corpos, not under govt control, and are accessible to anyone with an internet connection. They simply exist to be built upon and enjoyed by all.

Join and discuss such topics as usenet, or topics like TTRPGS, WH40K, and STUFF.

>WTF IS USENET
Literally it means the Users Network. It’s an open protocol for posting and reading messages, organized by newsgroups. It's entirely decentralized, no single server, impossible to take down.

Today it is split between, binaries and text. The binaries part is what it’s known for today: piracy. The text part is forgotten and abandoned (except for that one guy in alt.tv...), until now.

>WHY POST ON USENET
Its open protocol, you can use any client you want or build you own. No costs, no subscriptions, no money. You can sign up through your ISP or burner email address. Then you just need to install a client.

In 13th Age, all PCs have a "One Unique Thing." These are genuinely unique in the setting.

Core rulebook examples of modest OUTs include:
• I am the only halfling knight of the Dragon Emperor.
• I am the only acrobat who performed their way out of the Diabolist's Circus of Hell.
• I am the only human child of a zombie mother.

Then we have heavy hitters like:
• I hear the spirits of ancient oceans, which manifest or shine through my bones and organs when I cast spells.
• I see truths in shadows that cannot be seen in the real world.
• I am the reincarnation of a previous Archmage/Emperor/High Druid (though my memories are a little hazy).

This is purely narrative. It does not change mechanics in any way, and this is a high-powered game.

In 2e, five level 1 PCs in a three-combat workday could face twenty-five (25) ragged outlaws and five (5) more fearsome and formidable outlaws as a baseline, standard-encounter-budget combat. Their very next fight could be against seven (7) young white dragons, which they still consider a baseline, standard-encounter-budget combat.

World of Five Nations has this in the form of Unique Abilities but they're mechanical too. But obviously it's very abusable and requires oversight.

I'm trying to make a campaign where the party is taking a sea route around the east coast from Alethkar to the Reshi Isles (pic related), and I'm trying to come up with stuff to fill in the gaps of travel time and the different visited locations. Give me some ideas for things to throw at the party.

Elantris and Worldhoppers are the next splats coming after they finish the kickstarter's stuff, which is Stormlight now and Mistborn next year.

>I got the Stormlight part of the Kickstart books last week.
Congrats! I'm still waiting on mine!

>I want to do the setting justice.

Isn’t there an entire Stormlight novella about a sailing voyage? Pull from that. Parshmen pirates, turtle islands, oceanspren sprenning all over the place. Secret treasure (the treasure is the eternal wisdom of Joseph Smith).

Sanderson pulls half these books out of his ass. Write a few plot hooks, think about them for a few days, use one or two in the first session and go from there.

If your players are still fans of Sanderson after his last few books then they get excited by mystery box garbage, some real effort from you will blow them out of the water.

GURPS is a modular, adaptable system, capable of running a wide range of characters, settings, and play styles, with a level of detail varying from lightweight to completely autistic.
Optional rules allow you to emulate different genres with a single system, or even switch genres within a single game.

A nearly complete archive of GURPS books can be found by using the image (follow the URL to get to a folder with some files, read the files to get to the archive). Never post direct links to the archive anywhere in plain text.

If you're wondering where to start:
- The Basic Set covers everything, including a lot of optional rules you probably won't use.
- A genre guide can be found in the archive, under Unofficial/GURPSgen. It tells you what extra books and articles you may find useful for many common genres.
- How To Be a GURPS GM is a good read even for players.
- GCS (gurpscharactersheet.com) is an excellent character-builder software, with page references to all the books and the option to export to both Foundry and Fantasy Grounds.

Thread question: Is Reach important or is it all about how you use it?

See B211:
>Use this skill to monitor a location, a group of people, or your immediate surroundings for concealed or tactically significant details.
>For instance, you could case a bank for obvious cameras before a robbery, learn the schedule of sentries, estimate the size of a crowd, or gauge the strength of troops moving in the open.
Also it explicitly says it's not the detective skill:
>This is not the same as gathering clues or making a hands-on search (use Forensics and Search, respectively)
See also Criminology:
>This is the study of crime and the criminal mind. A successful skill roll allows you to find and interpret clues, guess how criminals might behave, etc.
Moreover, Action 2 says the following:
>Criminology: The generic police skill. On a success, the GM might give a “free” clue, point out suspicious behavior, or otherwise do whatever it takes to get a stalled cops-and-robbers story moving.
>Observation: The broad “notice stuff” skill. If the PCs are keeping an eye out for trouble, it’s safe to assume that Observation will spot suspicious behavior and sneaking bad guys.
>Deduction: At a crime scene, a success on Criminology will deduce enough about what the crooks were doing to reveal a clue; critical success might hint at the criminals’ organization or identity. In a military or espionage situation, Intelligence Analysis can work the same way.
So you use Observation to find a suspicious guy trying to not be noticed and then Criminology to figure out if he's a criminal or just a weeb trying to buy a bishoujo figure without meeting acquaintances.

It's the skill of a military scout, bodyguard, security guard, etc. It lets you sort relevant detail from irrelevant, understand how to report it, estimate size, numbers, and distance visually, and maybe opposes skills such as holdout, camouflage, and shadowing to spot hidden stuff / people / actions.
It's also the skill for acting as a spotter or observer for laying fire onto a position.
Examples:
Per tells you that there is a large group of troops marching along the road ahead of you. Per-based Soldier tells you which nationality they are, what weapons they are carrying, whether they are veterans or fresh recruits, well-led or disorganised, etc. Observation tells you how many there are (significantly more accurately than Per alone), how fast they are moving, distance, and how to put all that information into a report which someone with Intelligence Analysis or Tactics can make use of.
Per lets you know that someone is approaching you in the street. Per-based Streetwise can tell you if there are any tells of him being a dangerous criminal. Per-based Psychology might let you know if he is a crazy person. Body Language can real hostile intent. Observation might pick out details like him wearing a coat which seems too heavy for the weather and maybe spot a concealed weapon, or let you judge whether you have time to move to a safer position before he reaches you.

How to behead with swords or use the maul for its intended purpose which is to blow up heads, in GURPS fantasy? Picrel for illustration and proof of value added and cinematic potential.
>>
>>96766632
>How to behead with swords
Aim for the neck with a sword swing, then roll good enough damage to kill.
>Blow up heads with the maul
Aim for the skull with a swing, then roll good enough damage to kill.

These things are more or less purely flavor, you could maybe roll some kind of fear/morale check if someone gets killed in such a fashion, but there's not much mechanical difference.
