Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency. If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:>n00b DM's Guidehttps://pastebin.com/EVvt6P0B>n00b Player's Handbookhttps://pastebin.com/XALkXkV0>Troves, Resources, Blogs, etc:http://pastebin.com/9fzM6128Comment too long. Legitimate question: Do the few male Howling Banshees there are get a flat chest armour plate or do they just get the standard breasted plate and wear it though it's hollow? I think the latter would be cool to keep the outward image of a bunch of vicious female super soldiers killing people. Because if a dude joins them to begin with it's because he exhibits the finesse and precision they want, so the guy would already be acting kinda feminine, no?I don't know where I could look into to get an official answer to this inquiry

The Prince of Redding is slain. No update of fancy travel logs from Mine this night, we are ready to move. I posted multiple reasons why they are different and you refused to address any of them. They should be easy to refute if they are so uncompelling.>Everything D&D magic can do, modern technology can do better, with the exception of a few specific parts of medicine.Wrong. Because the real world doesn't have fighters with lots of hit points who can reliably teleport into an area and kill someone. You're literally trying to argue against caster supremacy in D&D, which has been objectively proven repeatedly over the past decade. You don't play games, or if you do, you layer them with a bunch of "ummm aschsually these guys knew you were coming due to their "technology" and shit" or some other bizarre excuse>Yet our society still has presidents who are not super genius scientists nor the best crack pilots nor nuclear submarine captains nor the greatest marksmen nor even people who could so much as lift their own fucking weight to perform a single pull up.Okay then they aren't BBEGs.>>97697033Spellcasters are infinitely more versatile than drones you fucking retard. Do drones cast Wish?
>>97692911Does Iran not deserve to be fought?
I accept your concession :^)
>>97699742>Okay then they aren't BBEGs.That other anon is kind of missing the point with his real world comparison. Nobunaga could be considered a real world BBEG but he probably wasn't that more skilled than the average soldier when it comes to fighting. For a purely Marital BBEG to work you'd need a ton of support for him. People that protect him and genuinely believe in his cause. His kingdom would need to be designed to prevent scry-and-fry tactics, he'd probably have casters putting up dozens of contingency spells, and would be loaded with magic items of all kinds. Honestly a BBEG Martial should be a threat in the same way old DnD Martials were, it wasn't their personal fighting ability though that was very good but the people that followed them.Sadly with the way that DnD is setup there's just no way to have the Martial BBEG be a credible threat on his own. Even if you gave him the Sword of Perfect Anti-magic he's always 1 round away from being just a guy if someone manages to take it.
>>97705171>Sadly with the way that DnD is setup there's just no way to have the Martial BBEG be a credible threat on his own.Exactly. In fact, with the way magic works in D&D, it's hard to take a campaign in it seriously at all. The magic is more ridiculous than in Harry Potter.

>>97608068playing in a lancer game and I need some adviceone of my fellow players has gotten on my nerves. Constantly does weird/stupid shit that wastes narrative time. Not frustrating per se but the game meets irregularly so when we have a full session of screwing around and then not meeting again for a month it sucks anyway, boss combat is coming up, from party actions we got intel that basically gives us the ultra unit's stat block.we have the force cage reserve from enhanced combat (basically forced fuck you duel to the death) which I thought would be fun and thematic if my character did this to the boss, because my character's whole schtick is he's a dueling guy, wants to be a pankrati (mech gladiator) and when strategizing I discovered it's actually not a horrible idea with my setupanyway, aforementioned party member immediately chimes in and claims they should do it instead because with their build they basically would be completely safe doing it (hide-looping) or at least much safer/more optimal than meI'm a bit frustrated at this, as I feel like he's stepping on my toes, either deliberately or not. But this in particularly caused me to look back on other stuff in the game and make me think the guy has main character syndromeI dunno what to do. Game is tonight, I kinda had a back and forth with him about how viable it would be and he basically was like "Well if I get to the boss first I'm doing it whether you like it or not"Which is going to happen, because he's playing an atlas and can just mario speedrun across the map.

There is a small event soon at 750pts, it's going to be my first tow event. I've started chipping away at the new cathay peasant box but looking at the profiles I don't think they are going to be enough. So far my core is:1. Astromancer lvl 12. 30 peasants with spears or 20 spears + 10 archers3. Crane gunners in two blocks of 4 each. Not sure if ironhails are useful with their 12 inch range.Any cathay players here that could help me please?
>>97708803What was the post?
>>97709060NTA but its very strange. If the beastmen try to head to head fight they lose super hard. Orcs are basically same stat line but have armor. They also have heavier unit in general. But beastmen absolutely annihilate them in speed, maneuverability, and tactical options. And beastmen monsters are really fucking good. It's a toss up based on charging. But I give it slightly over to beastmen due to their magic being more useful and option, their ranged being way stronger, and ambush is amazing. Orcs have way way more staying power, and will almost always grind out against any army.

>Hibiki>>97700150The only thing Hibiki really misses from the Land of Rice Fields is the forest he used to escape to and explore - he intends to return to it eventually at least once to meet the Singer, but doesn't plan on ever seeings his family again. He wasn't close to any of his relatives, wasn't fond of the traditions ('Ahhh, Aunt Kusanagi made the prisoner go into shock! She loses!'), and while the food and other luxuries were nice they were so plentiful that Hibiki finds the normal lifestyle of Getsugakure exotic and interesting. Other than some plants he enjoyed from home, he's happy to leave Otogakure behind.>>97702183Really cool work Dogen-anon! Gives more insight into Dogen's personality and teaching style, which will help a lot with writing him in the future. I can definitely see him being the hardass disciplinarian of the teachers, and he can serve as a good antagonist for the more lighthearted academy plots. No issues with Hibiki, he's in character and you did a good job with his parts. Technically Hypersonic Mind Waves forces the animal to obey orders even to their own detriment, but Hibiki at this stage wouldn't want to risk hurting them or going against their will so it still works. More a limitation of his personality than the Jutsu itself.
https://imgur.com/a/EYiWzT9Getsu is tiny. It has one port, one major settlement, and a palace a short walk from the town.It has no shinobi, and it seems to survive purely on tourist revenue.
>>97700150>Getsugakure is great, sure. They'e a rich place with a lot to offer.Natsume does NOT consider Getsugakure to be rich, both from her privileged upbringing as well as Redaku seeming to be one of the only nations that can rival it for national wealth.>But maybe they're missing that special something you're missing. Natsume is extremely homesick, which is exacerbating her brattiness. Back home she was the only child of magnates, knowing only that lifestyle, with abilities that were all but considered fictional by the people of her homeland. She was special. Here, she's one of many, and struggling to adapt. There is a yearly event that her parents would host, called the Parade of Dragons. It's effectively a competition between the various mines and their operators, where each try to present the largest, most complete, most impressive fossils they have found that year. The best she ever saw was a creature the size of a building, 100 feet tall. Seeing those long-buried ancient titans filled her with fantasies of what they would have looked like when they were alive. What she misses most of all is her home. She has many precious memories of there; of her parents, of her friends, of guests and celebrations. She's thought about if there's a way to replicate the climate. She's used to it being hot and dry. Getsu is wet and humid, since it's an island. She didn't know the air even could be wet. Drying out an area seems extreme though, and it's not like it's bad. There's more water in the sea than she has ever seen, but what kind of cruel joke is it that it's unusable?>>97702183Great stuff Dogen anon! Having the sensei acknowledge how busted our builds are compared to average genin is a great addition, and the teaching points were all on point! With Natsume, showing that she's far from mastering her abilities and can even put herself at risk with them if she's not careful is excellent. I wonder what he'd make of her eyes, and with the last bit, her treasure.
