stay in the rock

Honestly I'm tired of muh eldritch cults and the lovecraftian mythos in horror. No one is genuinely scared or creeped out by them. People may gloat about how much of an intellectual idea cosmic horror is; being overwhelmed by the vastness of the universe and feeling powerless, blah blah blah.

Satanic cabals, witch covens and pagan cults do give people the creeps. Voodoo dolls, human sacrifices, blood rituals, hidden groves with celtic ruins, secret societies, actual ghosts and demons instead of otherworldly beings who don't give a shit about mankind. Horns and blood scare people more than tentacles and ooze.

Lovecraftian entities are often impersonal and seem to mind their own business. Lovecraftian horror is often introspective, about realizations on the nature of the universe. Other monsters are biological like Deep ones or Nightgaunts, Byakhees, Shoggoths, Elder Things, Mi Go... you could reasonably fight them with automatic weapons.

Demons on the other hand are evil, personal, local, direct threats. And there is a possibility of beating them, as opposed to an overwhelming cosmic threat humanity can't do much about, which makes the story more interesting since there is hope and the chance you might either win or lose.

If you wanna go into existential threats, think of hell. The devil is wicked and personally invested in leading humanity astray, as opposed to Yog Sothoth or Azathoth who couldn't even care less about humanity (assuming they're even conscious and caring, which is not the case for Azathoth afaik).

Besides, demons, witchcraft and paganism have roots in the collective psyche of Western culture; if you were raised aChristian, regardless of denomination, you were probably afraid of those things to some extent when you were a kid. Cults, movies, urban legends ,subliminal message paranoia, you name it.

Cant say I have, both anecdotally and online, the edition seems less "meta-defined" than 2e

Whether thats ignorance, simply a case of the edition being younger or whatever? Idk, but things feel a lot "freer" than last ed
>>
>>96768002
Only explanation I have is that in my area, the "historical-minded" dont like how missions and army building has narrowed armies to being more similar and are taking breaks/still playing second edition hoping in a year the journals give more options.

Like my Blood Angel player who has been a jump pack drop pod player since 1.0 is completely out of it. My White scars player didnt like all their bikes being made way less workable and now needs to paint 40 infantry. Doesnt help that alot of legion themed units are generally overpriced and generic veterans just do their jobs better.

Meanwhile, the people that like the gameplay aspects are more excited, like the army building process, like the core rules and like the emphasis on tactical marines and such. Actually have more 40k players jumping on then when 2nd dropped.

The historical players aren't "gone" they are just not interested because they all don't want to spam 40 tactical marines in rhinos.

That's not what a historical player is though. A historical player would happily include waves of troops with only a smattering of specialists and legion troops for a more balanced force composition like in the black books. What you're describing is a thematic player, someone who got into a legion to pursue one of its subthemes rather than to collect a holistic force.

I’ve been using the Greek and/or Norse gods in my own campaign settings, but I want to start making my own deities and pantheons going forward, if you have any advice, I’d love to hear it please. Same for anything you’re willing to say about your own gods and goddesses, or any art of gods or related entities like angels.

I can relate. What inspired these Evil deities? And what about the Good gods?
>>
>>96758218
NE is based on consumption of innocent life. The NG counterparts are typically tree or plant based, often growing large gardens and healing sick animals.

LG is often creating things and is the pantheon of most kings.

CE is the wanton destruction of all things, especially things with order and logic.

Neutral is the pantheon of balance, often tipping the scale when need be, understanding that without evil, good wouldn't be a thing either, but never allowing evil to consume too much.

LE is mainly demons who focus on making deals for souls. This major god is the master of "Hell" for lack of a better term. All evil souls or those that have made deals, go to him in the end, often not torture, just a worse existence than heaven.

CG is the pantheon of the Muses. They are crafted from unique instruments and control the idea of "Heaven." In all, they try to free souls from their contracts at all times.

LN is the judge of the universe. He is given as much power as the founding god, only when seeing over a trial with two other gods as those involved. He is completely fair and his lesser gods are all forms of robots.

>CG is the pantheon of the Muses. They are crafted from unique instruments and control the idea of "Heaven." In all, they try to free souls from their contracts at all times.
Which muse is tied to which instrument? And how did the gods interact with your players?
>>
>>96763720
>Seraphine, Angel of the Blessed
A perfect note played on a string long in the past, her song is what leads good and neutral souls to their afterlife in the heavens.
>Elyndra, Harbinger of Serenades
One of the pianos being played by a master on the mortal plane, she was elected to be the goddess of Philosophy and Grace, often with the pattern of many keys on her flowing robes.
>Thayo, Ethos of Wind
Crafted most recently, he is born from a flute turned into a powerful master of the winds and embodies freedom.
>Lyrael, Melodic Sorceress
The main Chaotic Good goddess. When the first soul died, she was born as the song meant to hold them to heavenly bliss. She doesn't guide the souls after Seraphine, she is the embodiment of all of heaven.

The CG gods are known for inspiring mortals and welcoming them into heaven. The lesser gods will often speak in dreams, occasionally appearing on the material plane to observe epic songs and plays, kind of like offerings. They also frequently break sinners out of their deals with devils, just for fun's sake.
>>
>>96763913
Interesting that Thayo is the only male Muse. Or was that a typo?

I'm new to this and I have questions!

Is this a classless system?
How crunchy is it?
How does it handle battles?
How high is the risk of mortality?
>>
>>96766343
The game takes place in the 19th century, a rigid class society.
It's not crunchy at all, I just let my opponent do all the calculations for me.
The system is very combat-heavy and lethal, half my characters die every game.
Hi, I'm the resident shitposter. Serious answer: it's a skirmish wargame, not an RPG.

Having authored the Austrian material in it's first incarnation, and now seeing some of the playtest data and feedback from the thread generally, the following would be recommendations for revision to address some of the issues.
GENERALLY
It seems to be acceptable to lower the silver costs for the most of the follower units, rather than buffing the stats. As was raised in a previous thread, the initial proposal was largely of a military nature, and the book could axe several units that seem superfluous. Keeping in the new additions, Academic Apostate, Anomalist, Teslakanone, etc, there can be a bit of trimming in the followers. The Unterjaeger could be axed entirely, as it was initially a riff on the Subterranean Grenzer that was part of one of the original charts. The Landwehr Infanterie would also fit in this category, as it seems to share a position with the Austro-Hungarian mystery meat that, again, appeared first. The Skoda could be axed similarly, as the thread seemed to appreciate the Teslakanone as being more appropriate and sufficiently 'Agarthan'.
SPECIFICALLY
The Leyden Rifle v. Smiljan Carbine Issue.
I think the Smiljan fits better in the 'weapon matrix'. The grenades seem to be critical to a more aggressive game plan, so they could be renamed if that's a concern.
The Geballte-Ladung seems unnecessary. While it would historically accurate for the Austrians to eventually use something of this nature, we have the anomaly/Leyden grenades already available, plus vanilla dynamite.
Serbian Sapper can be cut, as there is a generic mercenary option available that could fulfill that role.
>>96695954
If a profile could be made for the Maximiliana Municipal Police, it could fit quite well.

Trimming down the book will help make list-building a bit less mind-wracking. The number of overlapping rules and complexities, insofar as the inbreeding/ethnicity charts are concerned, should remain, but possibilities for simplification can remain open.

A bit on the Free Archetype deal, it isn't necessarily the fault of the classes or the class feat system, moreso on the archetypes themselves. A lot of Archetypes just function better as supplements to a class than replacing such, stuff like Herbalist, Scout, or wide variety of organization archetypes like Hellknights. Blame Paizo for undershooting the power level, but it just feels better for everyone to let people express themselves more, especially as several classes do just have must-have feat picks.

>>96767399
>Just gotta focus on the modifiers that are general like that instead of "on Tuesday during a full moon."
There's definitely a lot more of Column A than Column B, but you are working with Paizo. They do love their stupid Mystery of the Druids ritual for paltry buffs, even in this system.
>>
>>96767350
>>96767366
Bard's thing is one action, party wide, and can last the whole fight depending on build. It's a long way from spending 3 actions to give a situational +1 to one roll.
>>
>>96767969
fuck I cut off the part where I meant to say "... using something to reduce that by 1 isn't doing nothing, but it's still a bad a ability". No Cause For Alarm has to contest with the fact that shit like Champion's Aura of Courage exists and just kind of passively does the same shit in an AoE, to say nothing of dozens and dozens of infinitely better actions you could use (just enter a Marshal stance or some shit). I'm pretty much in agreement, but it's pretty important to clarify that Frightened is a broad debuff.
>>
>>96768018
I just mean +1 matters, but so does number of actions, reach, duration, and applicability.

Wargames Atlantic seems reasonably successful and I am pleased by their variety of plastic kits, even if I think Victrix is mogging them on historicals and the only thing I've ever bought from them are Conquistadors for a Mordeim warband.

But like, there was that big traitor guard Kickstarter they did right? And that was HUGE: they had troops, elites, commandoes, not-ogryns, dogs, mutants, armor, artillery, etc etc. And it got into the region of '$400+ for your 15-20 boxes that are your entire army' on their incentives. Has that actually been delivered yet? I'm fine with a guy trying to make good but I feel people may not have backed $$$ on any kind of crowdfunding if they'd known this guy's actual history and I think its been in process for a long fucking time at this point, around 2 years?

There's gotta be at least a couple % points up on the likelihood of that failing knowing this guy is behind it.

They postponed the shipping a couple of times, for a variety of reasons, but they seem to be on a good track right now:
>shipping in the US is happening, and according to the comments section of the gamefound page, people got their minis, and many others got a tracking number
>production in the UK is halfway done
>shipping for UK/rest of the world should be finished before december

After that they plan to release a big "army" box set, and the vehicle indvidually as the first boxes from that range. (I think they will aim for the christmas market with those two, but who knows).

Chance of this failing is pretty slim at this point.

Gets into an interesting debate about false advertising, not sure where it legally ends up.
>are you allowed to advertise under a false name to avoid association with previous failures or reputations or does that have to be listed in the kickstarter potential project hurdles?
I'm under the impression kickstarter is all kinds of unregulated.
>>
>>96767777
Kickstarter only cares enough to
1: get paid
That's it. That's the end of the list.
>>
>>96767777
>kickstarter

the campaign is not run on kickstarter (maybe for exactly that reason, but i have no real clue about their regulations), but its not run by "Hudson Adams" personally, but by Wargames Atlantic in conjunction with Miniwargaming. So even if Tony personally would be banned from creating a new Kickstarter, his company might not be banned.

>I know I'm not supposed to talk to antitribu but would you be willing to share how one can learn magic outside of the Pyramid? I'm not really considered a proper Tremere myself, more of a lab rat really
Same way you learn magic inside the Pyramid. Sometimes from the same people, just at more competitive rates since they get less of a monopoly, if you can try and seek out Sabbat antitribu, Anarch antitribu, or random-asshole-in-a-trenchoat antritribu. It's just a matter of having something valuable to offer, ultimately. You, however fresh you are, still happen to have value. A fresh set of eyes, little true ties to anybody, an unaccounted for man - that's useful. And you can make it so you're worth more, to people.
>>96767824
Ah, yeah this answers my question, didn't see it in time.
Overall, there's several different reasons why a wolf may have chosen to do this. You are wise to point out not harming you, because that probably rules out just purifying the night as the cause. I doubt you're much of a nature enthusiast, so it probably doesn't just kind of like you.
Overall, I've had heard a lot about Sabbat in some areas, in some strange way, procuring werewolf mercenaries, while I was shopping around for ingredients. The mercenary variety of wolf is usually actually fairly mangy, apparently, and don't really offer their parts for sale, and when they do, they're usually not quite as usable as regular wolf bits. This Sabbat getting kidnapped mid-assault does make me wonder if somebody hired the wolf - either specifically to protect you, or to take out the Sabbat attacker. Maybe it's inner-sect conflict, or the attacker didn't pay what he owed to the wolf? Could also be that the guy who got wolfnapped did something to offend the local wolves, and this was personal.
I'd need descriptions of the wolf and some local politics gossip to guess with more accuracy.
>>
>>96767842
Certainly. Though I will keep some details hidden, operational security, I am sure you understand.

I am loyal to the Camarilla. My assailants were Sabbat, nomads almost certainly, there are no permanent Sabbat strongholds in the area. I must admit they caught me off-guard at first, so far from the frontlines in that particular war, I was not expecting a large and seasoned pack of Sabbat nomads to arrive upon my doorstep. I do not have any particular enemies among that sect, but the Sabbat do not care about particularities. All outside their deranged cult are enemies.

How vile. My condolences, cousin. If there is any justice in your city, the offender should have his hand cut off and cauterized. No Kindred should suffer such an indignity.

So:
>Camarilla who's knowledgeable-ish about werewolves, so maybe not a fledgling
>Seemingly not psychotic, maybe one of the reasons why there's no Sabbat in town
>Assaulted by an out-of-town, large Sabbat pack, potentially one arriving to establish a foothold in a new area
>Got to witness a strange, mangy wolf attack this pack and leave him entirely alone
>And then it just vanished, as werewolves who are doing a hit job prone to do at times
Oh, man, this is great. I'm placing whole one dollar on that the wolf belongs to a cleverer-than-usual pack that correctly identified you ast he lesser evil, twenty bucks on that it was a mercenary who had some sort of split with the pack who hired it to be extra spooky muscle, and fifty on that the nomads upset this guy's pack in some way and he went out of his way to fuck them up while they were busy with you.

Lupine mercenaries? Hmm. You would figure the Camarilla would have an easier time procuring them, we pay better after all. The wolf itself was unnaturally large, standing a bit shorter than my height at its shoulder. I'm tall, but not prodigiously so. Its jaws were, as mentioned, large enough to grab and hold a grown man and carry him off. The beast's coat was dark, almost matte black and patchy in some places, with a skin nearly as pale as ours.

As for local politics, what can I say without making myself a beacon for other Sabbat marauders... I occupy a position within my local Camarilla that not every domain or even region has. Marquess. I have also heard "Satellite Prince" or Margrave be used. Let's say you are a Prince who has a city, but quite a lot of that city's population actually lives outside of the city limits. Or you do not wish to allow Sabbat or Anarchs to fester in the more rural towns that inevitably orbit large cities such as yours. The answer? You grant domain, including semi-autonomy in enforcing the traditions, to a younger vampire that is loyal to you. It prevents dissention from the young by rewarding enterprising neonates, extends your influence and thus eyes well past proper cities limits, and provides yet another check to the Primogen council's power. In America, where I unlive, we have many suburbs and satellite towns and thus, this is our solution. It is not an American invention however, from what I understand it's something of a dusted off and repurposed pre-Thorns practice.

My domain is near the countryside, but I have never had even a peep of lupine activity. The proximity to the countryside is why I educated myself on the basics of lupines. I suppose it is good to have my suspicion confirmed that if they wanted me slain, they would have attempted to do so. What still eludes me is this: Why kidnap the Sabbat? It could've split him in half with those jaws, but instead it carried him off into the night.

Have we not all seen that picture a million times by now? What's the point of this thread?

except for in all the adventure modules that might as well be movie scripts and fall apart the second you go off the rails

You know what the problem is with le epic taco and the faggot dwarfs with the hipster beard tats and the Mexican orcs? It emphasizes the fakeness of the whole thing. Who wants to pay good cash American to be reminded 'this is fake, don't get too immersed?' Who wants to sink money, free time, and thought into something that's just the same boring life they sleepwalk through to get to their leisure time, except with slightly fantastic people making the lattes? No one wants to go out in the world to work at Starbucks. It provokes no wonder. It causes no excitement. It asks nothing of interest.

I think the Dark Animal engine is massively overhyped as a generic purple bottom end. It's only ever really found success with Levia and Anubis. Anubis is a fundamentally broken card, and Levia just has really particular characteristics that make it particularly good with Dark Animal. Biting Crush gives you something to do in case your shitty stack gets outed, and Levia X turns the level 5 you've got sitting on the board into an actual threat.

There's a reason why no other top-end has ever found any meta relevance with Dark Animals. The typical scenario with DA is that you move your stack out early and waffle around with little draw-discard effects and psychemons and hope that slows the opponent down a bit. It isn't a strategy that works well with any other top-end.
