>The Wilderness was a mean place for a battle; a large expanse of scrubby underbrush and second growth forest. Union artillery crews found unburied skeletons left from the Chancellorsville battle a year ago and old timers remembered the horror of that fight, men crippled by gunshot wounds being unable to get away from the forest fires that were creeping closer to burn them alive.

>It was here that Robert E. Lee chose to make his stand; the dense vegetation would cancel out the Army of the Potomac's advantage in numbers and especially artillery and if they wanted one square foot of Wilderness ground, they were going to pay for it.

At Gettysburg the 6th Corps was the largest in the AotP, almost twice as large as the smallest corps (11th & 12th). When and how this disparity arise? Could it have influenced how the corps was used?
>>
>>18249060
The 11th Corps had not fought since 2nd Bull Run and was pretty fresh. The 12th had been completely smashed up at Antietam. The 6th had not done much serious fighting in a while (only one brigade actually did anything at Antietam). It was expanded to ten brigades in January '63.

tl;dr the 6th had a lot of regiments and hadn't fought much in the campaigns of the last several months while the 11th was pulverized at Chancellorsville and they straggled more due to lack of experience with campaigning

They were experiencing food shortages because of the blockade against Germany.
>cut off
Their food imports were blockaded
Which is a war crime today btw.
>deliberate starvation
Starvation would have occurred regardless due to the blockade, in modern Western Jurisprudence there is no reasonable expectation to starve yourself over someone else.
This is the legal expectation TODAY.
Germany did NOT deliberately starve anyone according to contemporary law.
Furthermore, responsibility for the starvation taken as an "if not for" lies squarely on the British who blockaded Germany.
>but dey were at war
that is why we have things like war crimes, so that "it was le war" is not an excuse.
>sustain the war
What does this even mean? Germany tried to end the war multiple times going so far as offering peace on day fucking two of the invasion of Poland when Germany occupied solely Danzig (not apart of Poland btw, but an independent country that wanted to join Germany) and not a single Polish town had been taken.
Both parties have to come to the table to end the war without total destruction of one side, Britain never came to the table, Germany did.

Communism and fascism share characteristics as totalitarian and authoritarian systems that suppress individual rights in favor of the collective, but their core ideologies, goals, and economic principles are fundamentally opposed. Fascism developed in direct opposition to communism.

The totalitarian and authoritarian systems shared between the two are quickly becoming the face, while the mutually opposed core ideologies, goals, and economic principles of the two are now ignored. It’s all authoritarian and that’s all that matters.

When people say “fascist” they think of authoritarian violence now. Not commie or fascist principles.

> The Nazis by contrast were seen much more negatively from the start, they were seen by mainstream politicians outside Germany as warmongerers (Hitler was often compared to the Kaiser, which was the shorthand at the time that he someone is an evil warmongerer) and un-Christian.

Crock of shit.

“ “I have now seen the famous German leader and also something of the great change he has effected. Whatever one may think of his methods – and they are certainly not those of a parliamentary country – there can be no doubt that he has achieved a marvellous transformation in the spirit of the people, in their attitude towards each other, and in their social and economic outlook.

He rightly claimed at Nuremberg that in four years his movement had made a new Germany. It is not the Germany of the first decade that followed the war – broken, dejected and bowed down with a sense of apprehension and impotence. It is now full of hope and confidence, and of a renewed sense of determination to lead its own life without interference from any influence outside its own frontiers.

There is for the first time since the war a general sense of security. The people are more cheerful. There is a greater sense of general gaiety of spirit throughout the land. It is a happier Germany. I saw it everywhere, and Englishmen I met during my trip and who knew Germany well were very impressed with the change.

One man has accomplished this miracle. He is a born leader of men. A magnetic and dynamic personality with a single-minded purpose, as resolute will and a dauntless heart. He is not merely in name but in fact the national Leader. He has made them safe against potential enemies by whom they were surrounded. He is also securing them against the constant dread of starvation which is one of the most poignant memories of the last years of the War and the first years of the Peace. Over 700,000 died of sheer hunger in those dark years. You can still see the effect in the physique of those who were born into that bleak world.

The fact that Hitler has rescued his country from the fear of a repetition of that period of despair, penury and humiliation has given him an unchallenged authority in modern Germany.

As to his popularity, especially among the youth of Germany, there can be no manner of doubt. The old trust him; the young idolise him. It is not the admiration accorded to a popular leader. It is the worship of a national hero who has saved his country from utter despondency and degradation.
>>
>>18249074
>>18249076
To those who have actually seen and sensed the way Hitler reigns over the heart and mind of Germany, this description may appear extravagant. All the same, it is the bare truth. This great people will work better, sacrifice more, and, if necessary, fight with greater resolution because Hitler asks the to do so. Those who do not comprehend this central fact cannot judge the present possibilities of modern Germany.

That impression more than anything I witnessed during my short visit to the new Germany. There was a revivalist atmosphere. It had an extraordinary effect in unifying the nation. Catholic and Protestant, Prussian and Bavarian, employer and workman, rich and poor, have been consolidated into one people. Religious, provincial and class origins no longer divide the nation. There is a passion for unity born of dire necessity.

I have never met a happier people than the Germans and Hitler is one of the greatest men.” - David Lloyd George, British Prime Minister

Left to our own devices, mankind is doomed to submit to perversions and deviancy. Dedication and loyalty are not instilled into one without God's light. This is evident in societies where Christian morality is not present. The default position held by people is to seek dopamine release, which is incredibly destructive without a strong and disciplined family unit. Fornication such as that with the same sex and animals are unavoidable without Christian doctrine being adhered to by a governing body. This is why we have begun see a decline in morality in Western nations over the past half of a century. The only way to reverse the decay is to return Christ back to His rightful place over man.

Isn't it ironic? Mediterraneans accuse us of being matriarchal, based on scarce and distorted evidence from Tacitus and genetic pages on Wikipedia, but it turns out that what was most matriarchal, i.e., a society dominated by chubby roasts, was in fac, present among the inhabitants of the Iberian Peninsula.

>These discoveries challenge long-standing notions about leadership and gender among the earliest complex societies of prehistoric Europe, the article states. And it adds: In the early third millennium, the women of Valencina were powerful political and religious agents to a degree not reached by men.

>Women played a central role as political and religious leaders within the social formation that lived in or frequented Valencina, the researchers conclude.

During the reign of Lê Thánh Tông from 1460-1497 (Hồng Đức era) in Lê dynasty Vietnam, Han Chinese men on ships who were blown towards Vietnam's coast were arrested by Vietnamese coastal patrols.

The Vietnamese selected the young Han Chinese men for castration to become eunuch slaves.

Over 100 Han Chinese young men were known to be castrated by the Vietnamese after the Ming government found out in 1472 from some people who escaped and reported over 100 Chinese men were castrated and still in Vietnam after their ships were blown off course.

The Ming government again had another report in 1499 from a Chinese eunuch named Wu Rui (born in Wenchang, Hainan) who escaped in 1497 after he had been enslaved in Vietnam's palace for decades after he was castrated as a young man on a ship that blew off course.

No military action was taken by the Ming dynasty against Vietnam over this.

Han Chinese from Hainan (Hainanese) and the Leizhou peninsula have almost no famous people before the 20th century. They only had three semi-known Ming officials (Wang Maode, Han Jun, Lin Hua) and one Qing official, Huang Jifei.

Wu Rui is probably the most famous historical Han Chinese Hainanese, solely for being a eunuch slave to Vietnamese.

Nowadays you could punish them by air raids, drone strikes etc but in that time it would require a very costly ground invasion of the country so not worth it.
>>
>>18248940
It affected all Chinese men blown towards Vietnamese waters. Chinese needed to get on ships to travel between Hainan and the mainland
The entire Gulf of Tonkin area became a danger zone for Chinese, any Chinese ship travelling between Hainan island, the Leizhou peninsula in Guangdong and Guangxi could get blown to Vietnam.
The Ming government issued a warning for Chinese to avoid foreign countries in 1472, but many of the Chinese men weren't even going to foreign countries but just travelling between Hainan and mainland China.
Any young Han Chinese man from Hainan who needed to travel to the mainland do business or take the Imperial exam could end up as a eunuch slave in the Vietnamese palace for the rest of his life.
The over 100 figure was fron 1460-1472, more could have been castrated from 1472-1497.

>>18248946
China lost revenue from trade between Hainan and the mainland.
The Vietnamese palace got free Chinese eunuch slaves.
With over 100 Chinese eunuchs, they didn't have to castrate Vietnamese for palace service during the entire Lê Thánh Tông reign.

I’m reading about the classical era, and it’s hard to find an admirable man who WASN’T screwing boys on the side.
Of the first 15 Roman Emperors, 14 were recorded to have had sex with boys, and the man out—Claudius—was mocked as being “ruled by women” for not doing so. In Sparta and Thebes, men at arms would have sex with each other to promote military efficiency (the Theban “Sacred Band”, Spartan Agoges). In fact, this seems like a constant of militaristic societies, with the Ottomans also practicing this trend. Only where it was religiously prohibited was it not practiced.
This kind of homosexuality naturally seems institutional, imposed, and not natural, but it’s bizarre to wrap my head around.

NTA, but I think in your anger toward the other poster you're jumping the shark.

Chirst Church Cathedral, probably among the most famous buildings in the entire city, sits on a spot where Sigtrygg Silkbeard built one. The Irish Government minted coins which commemorated the "founding" of Dublin by the Vikings. Irish muesums are utterly rammed with artifacts from "Viking Dublin" and there's a huge tourist industry built around it. Yes, the wooden structures they built are gone. Yes, the English had a far greater mark on the city than the Norsemen did.

It's correct to say that the area was already settled pre-Vikings, but to suggest the Viking influence on the city has been completely eradicated is also very silly. The legacy of "Viking Dublin" is alive and well and far more popular than the Norman History, for example.

Still has nothing to do with vikings and church it replaced would have been very modest and perhaps built out of wood.

>The Irish Government minted coins which commemorated the "founding" of Dublin by the Vikings.

The date they used for the founding was the year the Irish high king Mael Seachnall took the town and freed the slaves there.

>Irish muesums are utterly rammed with artifacts from "Viking Dublin"

I haven't seen much and they didn't seem to leave much of any significance.
