my rules works like this:
you have 'land' cards and common cards (hero/minions/creatures, spells, relics/equip cards, etc..)
like in duel masters, you can use all your cards as a mana pool. the idea I was developping is you have land cards. when you play them, it stay on field. and you have the common cards that can be played as mana in your mana pool but after using/tapping/consum them, it goes to the gy.

As far as I can see, Vampire Counts are more elite (although that may change if Grave Guard or Blood Knights get nerfed, as Wailing Dirges were). They lack big monsters and shooting, but have strong duel-oriented heroes and good cavalry. Tomb Kings, on the other hand, seem to have more "trap" (weak or inefficient) units, and even their good units are not particularly strong. However, they do have shooting, war machines, and big monsters. Chariots are not my thing, so I'm excluding them from consideration. Tomb Kings also can't really "tank" a hit with their infantry - "elite" Tomb Guard are worse than Grave Guard, and "horde" Skeleton Warriors are more expensive Zombies (and can't be raised over their initial numbers). Archer bricks don't work that well anymore, after the poison nerf. That said, this is only the current state - tomorrow Grave Guard might be nerfed as well, so relying on a single strong unit is probably unwise. Everything good eventually becomes bad.
Overall, playstyle is probably what I should be focusing on. However, I haven't played either faction, nor have I watched them played.
Could you offer some advice? Between Tomb Kings and Vampire Counts, what is the principal difference?

If you are talking Genesys, Droll is getting hit. It's one of the very few cards mentioned in both the Bologna recap as well as the What to Expect update. I expect that it's going to at least 10, possibly higher.

And before you start to mention people making a lot of searches, Utopia is the biggest example of that sorta style and it has had several cards in the main and extra mentioned in the What to Expect, so combo extending searchers are also gonna get hit.

Additionally, handtraps and similar interruptions or field clearers are going to be getting a buff, as counters to them such as Crossout Designator and Traptrix Rafflesia (via setting an activateable Floodgate Trap Hole) are also preconfirmed to be hit. So while you may not be playing Droll, the ones you do play will be actually resolving more.

As they stated in the Bologna blog, from the data they have, the problem is both Droll and what Droll is countering.

The caparisons were left plain since I couldn't be bothered paint them or spend a lot of time researching early caparisons. I believe that tabards and caparisons usually weren't made to show the blazon of the wearer, instead the early ones were a single color that didn't match the blazons. Heraldry itself was still in its infancy at the time, most being simple boring geometric shapes.

I am learning how to highlight and working on test schemes for some Bolt Action Italians. Going for a less realistic Grigio-Verde leaning into bluer tones. If I want to attempt to do one more even lighter highlight should I stick to just edge highlighting?

I tell people which edition we’re using ahead of time. I assume most groups would do the same.

If you mean you want to make a concept work for one edition when we’re playing a different one I’d just say no. It’s like one anon who said his DM said the spell doesn’t work that way because that’s not how it works in pathfinder. It is a completely moot point as we’re not playing that version of D&D.

Third for GURPS. Especially if you use Combat Writ Large from Pyramid 3/77. Being huge makes you easier to hit, but gives you a discount on Strength, bonuses to grappling, bonuses to melee reach, and (if you're big enough) turns your melee attacks into Area Effect attacks and lets you trample over foes just by moving over them. Also, if you deal enough damage, then you can send foes flying with the Knockback rules. If using Combat Writ Large, then there are also rules for climbing onto a bigger creature, so giant characters can even become their own battlemap.

Mutants & Masterminds. Because it has probably the most streamlined, consistent and easily applicable system for punting people, buildings, ships and even planets. No matter what it is you can easily see if your character capable of punting it and how far. You can easily have a giant brawl in the middle of the city with giants throwing each other left and right, toppling buildings, squashing humies and throwing horses at each other. Or shoving a bell from the church tower over the head of your opponent and ringing it.

Finally finished the box of french infantry, at least to tabletop play levels. Might add a wash an some grass later.

Some acceptable photos of my knights now. Glad heraldry was still simple during the 12th and 13th centuries.

28mm Barons War minis by Footsore that I'm using for the Barons War Outremer expansion. The one in red is my leader, the historical figure Conrad of Montferrat, one of the leaders during the third crusade and was instrumental in preventing Saladin from capturing Tyre and later being elected king of Jerusalem before being murdered by the Assassins. His standard bearer flies the blazon of Jerusalem but his shield indicates he's from Ibelin.

have you posted this years ago? I'm almost certain I had completed this in 2022/2023. That logo was on a sythe, and I think I gave it multiple robot arms, but the gold skull stuff wasn't on the request. The white and black logo just teleported me back 3 years. fuck dude. Sorry for effortposting your Friday

1. What systems have you found that have made combat engaging?
2. What do you think is a satisfying duration for most fights? Over quickly? Or minimal resolution (followed by optional exposition)
3. Do you find a sort of "bidding" of dice (such as in Riddle of Steel and her derivatives) fun? Or do you prefer the dice that you roll to be fairly consistent/static in their outcomes?
4. Do you find "maneuvers"- like in Mythras- fun? Do you find that tracking a number of maneuvers grinds combat resolution down too slowly? What about a sort of freeform ability to spend "bonus success" on maneuvers (sort of "fiction first")?

I'm thinking about my system. It's very inspired by Mythras, Forbidden Lands, and Riddle of Steel but I'm unsatisfied with it. I'd like to really look at the fundamentals- the statistics, the base mechanics, the speed of resolving each round- before tacking on additional details. Right now, I have attacker declaring an attack and defender declaring a reaction (dodge, parry, or block with shield), rolling a dice pool (attribute+professional rank+gear bonus) and comparing successes. Extra successes are spent on dealing more damage or performing maneuvers. I'm curious if anyone here has experiences in systems that they've found particularly fun, fast, engaging, and place a lot of decision pressure on the player (to replicate- in a way- the stress of combat)

Love the "without Number" stuff. Crawford is a genius. ACKS is also a ton of fun. It sounds like you're touching on something I've been thinking about: keeping the number of rolls to a minimum to keep things moving.

I still get stuck on rolling separate damage and "hit" rolls. I might need to slaughter that sacred cow in my own design and embrace the philosophy of : if you hit you'll do at LEAST some minimum damage, with additional successes upgrading that damage severity.

Cleave is an interesting mechanic and seems to really give fighters that extra OOMPH. I also really like the DCC "heroic deeds" option to set martials apart.

I'll answer your question first. I think my game will appeal to someone who enjoys fast, brutal, and decisive combat that leans INTO its historical inspirations rather than heroic fantasy. Rolling almost never results in a "neutral" or non-result. Even if damage isn't dealt, there's often some other effect that happens (e.g. the dagger wielder moves into close range, the warrior lunges for a clinch, the enemy is knocked back or disoriented- suffering a penalty to the next attack, the combatant positions themselves in such a way as to maneuver an enemy between their ally so as to avoid being flanked, etc). It grants details that I'd like to be represented in games; such as armor, hit locations, etc, but does so in a way that requires fewer cognitive steps or mechanical knobs. The core resolution (dice pool, count successes) also feel more plausible and mimc skill probability growth in measured skills. The best part is it's simple to do. No reading numbers, just throw dice and look for 5's, 6's explode. That's it. Compare who has the most successes and describe what happens.

wouldn't call it that, at least not the pathfinder for savage worlds.
each character has skills & attributes that are represented by die types, and edges.
there are classes but they are just a series of edges and don't define your character.
player characters all got a max 3 wounds and each time they take damage all their rolls are reduced by the number of wounds they got (although some edges change that).
so let's say I'm a human fighter attacking a goblin with, my fighter has a d10 in fighting and a d10 in strength. I choose to attack the goblin twice (incurring a penalty of -2 to my rolls for the extra action)
first attack:
I roll 1d10 for fighting and 1d6 for luck (all player characters have this for all rolls). I got 6 on my fighting and 6 on my luck, the luck die exploded so I roll again - to a total of 11, I use 11 as my final attack roll because it's higher, subtracting 2 to a final result of 9.
the goblin has a parry of 8 so I hit.
I roll damage - 1d10 for strength + 1d8 for the sword I use. to a total of 5, the goblin has 8 on his toughness score so I do no damage.
second attack:
I roll a final result of 14 (thanks to exploding dice), because I got a number that is higher than the parry of the goblin by more than 4 I add another d6 to my damage dice.
my total damage this time is 12, if it were lower than the goblin would only be stunned by my attack (and thus need to roll on his spirit attribute to try and snap out of it next turn) but I got a number higher than his toughness by more than 4 and inflict a wound on him.
the goblin is just a minion and thus has only one wound. he dies.

I draw a distinction between mechanical width and depth. You can add 1000 perks to a skill tree but if each one is "+5%" then theres a very broad but shallow scope to the system. "Force a target to repeat their previous turn" is a single ability, but the applications are nearly limitless.

The way you have the formula set up the most efficient games are ultra fast with no complexity, but i dont think that would produce a fun experience

My problem with opposed rolls is that it makes GM roll and absolutely silly amount compared to players. Which I guess is fine if GM likes to roll constantly, but personally I find it distracting when my mentality is already being drained by thinking how I will fix the issue of players deciding to drop that necessary NPC prisoner into lava with the door key he was holding.
