False. Your DM is just bad at letting you do this. There are even rules in the DMG for letting your players design their own spells.
>>
>>97314029
>but it's clear already you're an absolute retard that would not accept this is the case even if wizards literally had an innate ability called Science™.
I'd disagree with the author's use of the word qualifying for this argument if it was sufficiently contradictory to the empirical framework of study that is the contrast of the magic vs. science trope, but it's quite possible to demonstrate a scientific process through research rules that are incremental.

>>97314036
No, the free spells on level-up are fluffed as independent research and you actually have to spend time studying writings to copy them into your spellbook. And back in 3.5, you can find spell research rules on pg. 198 of the Dungeon Master's Guide:

>Research requires an expenditure of 1,000 gp per week and takes one week per level of the spell. This money goes into fees, consultants, material component experimentation, and other miscellaneous expenditures. At the end of that time, the character makes a Spellcraft check (DC 10 + spell level). If that roll succeeds, the character learns the new spell if her research produced a viable spell. If the roll fails, the character must go through the research process again if she wants to keep trying.

Of course, a "viable" spell is "DM-may-I" with fuck-all guidelines and remains devoid of what epistemological approach is used, but it does exist.
>>
>>97314041
Guess how we can all tell you've never actually seen it happen at the table. Go on. Guess.
>>
>>97314041
>>97314098
In my experience, the only times spells were invented by PCs were when we were playing a system where the magic was flexible from the get-go. At least a little customisation presented as default rules instead of being a variant printed in GM-facing book. Otherwise neither the players nor the GM bother.
Maybe if you count swapping traits and damage types in Pathfinder to make an"Iceball" or Ray of Flame, but that used Oscillating Wave Psychic as the precedent, the example, and the template.
>>
>>97314224
>At least a little customisation presented as default rules instead of being a variant printed in GM-facing book.
fun fact, this was gonna be in the 'One D&D' ruleset that got abandoned after all the babies cried that they weren't going to be able to use their old 2014 books anymore even though Wotsee Said, WOTSEE SAID

There was a 4th level spell planned for the PHB that allowed you to make specific changes to a prepared spell you already had memorized, and a 5th level spell that let you make the modified spell permanent and scribe it as its own unique spell and name it Anon's Ritual Lightningball or whatever.

>LRL is one of the hardest if not the hardest faction in AoS to paint. trim everywhere, gems and little bits and details everywhere, even for your basic battle line units.
They really aren't as bad as people make them out to be. Slaanesh and IDK are worse. I'd even throw STD if painted more "cleanly" higher up than LRL, too. Especially if you add in some Marauders as Darkoath. Tons more trim, trinkets, and textures. LRL's trim is very well defined on sculpts and simple in shape and gems can be painted as easily or as difficultly as one would like.
I would say Rotswords have more detail than LRL Wardens or Sentinels if we're talking basic battleline. But LRL largely can't afford to use muck and grime as a cover for quick/sloppy painting. Now assembly? LRL are definitely a candidate for worst assembly and ease of enabling sub-assembly. Some very stupid choices there.

I'll warn you after Giantslayer (mind you, that's book like... 7) they swap authors from William King to Nathan Long. Kinda what I said before, it's not bad but I think Orcslayer was probably the weakest in the series for me. (Manslayer coming in close second) but the rest are pretty good.

But I hope you enjoy it anon, it's a fun series!
>>
>>97314184
To prove your point for Slaanesh, Blissbarbs are also built like hot ass on top of being spindly, pokey, and difficult to paint cleanly. I hate them and my buddy who just painted 2k of Drukhari hates them.

But fuck me does HoS have some of the best models in AoS.
>>
>>97314197
I’ve only built/painted a squad of Blissbarbs, Myrmidesh, and a Lord of Hubris. I didn’t entirely hate it but I did make it miserable for myself by painting the two squads simultaneously.

For me I just didn't like Scrapper's powerpicker.
>>
>>97313969
It is a bit lackluster. I remember some anons wanted to make custom artifacts but were rejected at the character creation stage, we never got far enough into the plot for us to find new ones narratively. At least not usable ones.

Chunin is also just more fun if you're going to run nardo for MP. Child soldiers being used in a mostly nonlethal proxy war (that ultimately becomes lethal) to maintain peace between the nations as essentially WMDs checks a lot of boxes. You get built in conflict, blood feuds, clan politics, training arcs, friends to rivals, enemies to friends, etc. And all in a central location for the anons who insist that this is a necessity.

"This now leads us to the next question: How are cards split between rare and mythic rare? Or more to the point, what kind of cards are going to become mythic rares? We want the flavor of mythic rare to be something that feels very special and unique. Generally speaking we expect that to mean cards like Planeswalkers, most legends, and epic-feeling creatures and spells. They will not just be a list of each set's most powerful tournament-level cards." - Mark Rosewater

"You've been hired by a local crime lord to kill an Imperial Moff who refuses to turn a blind eye to said crime lord's dealings"
Now the party gets to decide what sort of morality it wants. Full murder hobo killing evil Imperials, or helping the Imperials enforce their evil lawful ways by helping them get rid of a crime lord.
Or get jobs from a mysterious contact (who may or may not be a part of the Rebel Alliance) to strike and destroy Imperial infrastructure or steal money or ships from the Empire.
Or stealing rare and valuable ancient artifacts from rich asshole who supports the Empire. Or from the local crime lord.

Just spitballing here. You can take a lot of fantasy adventures and just replace things like "king" with "planetary governor" and still have cliche'd adventures rescuing a princess.
The sky's not even the limit since there's also all that space out there to explore. Like having the party fly into an asteroid field to investigate an ancient derelict spaceship for anything valuable and/ or fighting off space pirates who want the loot for themselves or are just harassing local civilian traffic.

>>97314004
Heh, I might have to check that out.
It does remind my of the many times we'd be in a public place and the party members would say "act subtle so you don't attract attention" and I'd have to remind them that "I am seven feet tall, four feet wide, and painted bright red. I do not do 'subtle'"

quasi related, it's always been weird to me how droids never get to be eccentric or overly weird, hell the droid with the most personality is R2, and its just him being sassy and brash at most, or K-2S0 or HK-47 being very sarcastic. why can't we get droids who love to wear gaudy chains and furs and use blasters way over their weight tolerance and other dumb shit.
>>
>>97313984
The traditional "you're in debt to a hutt and working under it as payment" is always fun since it lets the party start off as thugs doing low level shit, then they can eventually get drawn into a larger event that can have consequences down the line (like if they join the rebellion without paying off their debt, they have to choose between doing a blatantly evil job that pays enough money to cover their debt or pissing off their boss by fucking up the job while remaining in debt, or dealing with the increased scrutiny if they find a jedi relic and report it to the Imperials).
Also, how you frame a quest can really shape the enjoyment of it and how the players will react accordingly.
when in doubt, use high-school level plagarism skills and just blatantly copy another plot but make it fit into the star wars setting. There's a large enough variety of planets and cultures that a good chunk of popular fiction can be easily retooled to work in the setting.

Is complaining about off-topic threads actually a Wilbur thing? I've been doing that for ages (I even made pic related a couple years ago). The real kicker is that I don't hate off-topic threads; /tg/ has always had cheesecake threads and BITCHES for example. I just fucking hate those inane "x in your setting?" threads that never go anywhere, never really contribute anything, and get maintained by bumpfag almost constantly. I've seen threads that have sat on the board for weeks that were "what is x like in your setting" and just always get a bumpfag post to keep them up like "tell me more anon" in response to anyone who puts a modicum of effort into a post. It makes the board more boring than it already is these days. The amateur game design thread is the best thread on the board, and ironically it's rarely around.

How do gene stealer cults start? Do the Tyranids send a planet an approximate of what the humans/whoever find a 10/10 mate or do they just send some bug to attack and rape the first human they see? I'm trying to start a campaign about the beginning stages of an invasion but don't really know what happens before the cult starts growing. How do they get human/tyranids in the beginning before the indoctrination? Also, can tyranids interbreed with or gain biomass from daemons
>>
>>97314101
>How do gene stealer cults start?
Alien-style, innit? A purestrain genestealer sneaks onto a planet somehow starts molestering humans who get mind-raped and implanted with tyrannid genetic material. They have mutant babies and this continues for several generations until the offspring are purestrain genestealers again. Meanwhile, the original genestealer gets ecksbawks-hueg and becomes a patriarch, controlling all its molested thralls and their offspring through psychic voodoo.
>>
>>97314101
It starts with genestealers skulking around and infecting humans, who then form a cult. You can read about the full process by just simply googling.

Daemons famously don't have biomass, they poof into nothing when "killed", returning to the warp. Mildy worrying someone who clearly seems to have not read much 40K is running a game...

Play a different game. No, really. "Hates all magic" isn't a logical position in the world of Exalted because literally everything is magic. The world itself is made of magical energy, there are gods for everything, and even mundane actions can have magical consequences associated with them. This isn't like D&D where "magic" is some separate thing--it's an inherent part of the world of Creation.

Now, if you want to hate a specific *kind* of magic, or be an Exalt whose purpose is hunting other Exalted, go nuts.

>For the people who might have actually played it here. Do you guys know the in universe reason why high sci fi people would use swords often in Heaven's Reach?
Because laser swords are cool, and because they're pretty effective, not any less so than ranged weapons. If your question is more along the lines of, 'why do ranged weapons work as well or better than swords in my space fantasy game', the answer is because it is in fact a science fantasy, a specific niche genre that hybridizes the more broad science fiction genre with more classical fantasy adventure, occupied by media such as Star Wars and Warhammer 40k, rather than being a high-power sci-fi along the lines of Star Trek or the Culture series.

Klingons exist to explore the idea of warrior cultures taken out of place into the speculative future of advanced science and adapted into that sphere. Klingon characters live lives of fantasy warrior adventuring even if that'd probably be the most glorious life they can imagine, because adventure isn't what the genre's about.

This is a general for OSR, seperate from /osrg/, where you CAN talk about AD&D 2e, retroclones & other general OSR. This general exists (and is seperate from /osrg/) due to trolling on /osrg/ making discussion impossible.

He was gonna do it anyway. He might have even done it less than he normally does because he briefly felt less alone, finally getting a real person to pay attention to him.
