>>97224145So I've been writing and writing, got world a lore and everything but I can't decide on a what system and/or ruleset use. Labyrinthus caught me attention, has anyone here given it a try? How is it?
>>97224834>has anyone here given it a tryIt's one of the most played systems here so, that would say something about it. If you like to come up with things and like the flexibility of the random generation it's pretty good. Takes some time to lean but it also has the pre-made Adventures which sort of teach you how to play. Plus the author is pretty fast at fixing things or is always welcoming towards suggestions or homebrews
>>97224834It's the bestest most wonderful game ever and does everything effortlessly. You will never need another game ever.
This is a second OSRG, seperate from the main osrg thread, where you CAN talk about 2e, retroclones, and any osr content you want. This is different than the regular osrg as due to rampant trolling from a handful of bad actors, discussion is impossible.
>>97224738That was a great article. Good breakdown of a bunch of bad game design in a variety of osr and nusr stuff. The comments from various makers and the dialogue was cool to see too although involves more reading between the lines and polite bullshit that goes with having your name directly attached to what you say. >Shadowdark author doesn't like their own travel rules, has to write new ones and charge for those too lol https://rancourt.substack.com/p/a-survey-of-overland-travel/comments

Did you guys check out the ACKS II Treasure Tome that came out recently? I think it's an absolute beast for anyone who loves simulationism. The sheer variety of magic items and the new "heroic" tables for giving them out are absolutely fantastic. I can see it becoming my go-to reference for including a bunch of new and interesting magic items in my adventures without breaking the balance. Whether you're running OD&D, AD&D, or B/X, it is golden. If, however, you're an "AD&D" 2e fan, you're a fucking retard, so you won't able to appreciate how good it is.

>>97223264I think it might work best if it was a shield that took up no hands, gave no AC bonus by default, but had a chonky HP pool, good resistances (like a sturdy shield) and let you do two things: use shield block without needing to raise a shield, and it allows you to use the take cover action (lile a tower shield) for +AC and +Reflex (you present the armored side to the enemy).
Have... Are any of the 2e APs memorable in the same way the others are? They made games out of Kingmaker and Wrath of the Righteous, can any of the current ones be given the same treatment?
>>97224778They're making a Diablo-clone of Abomination Vaults, I believe.
>>97224778Truthfully, the quality of KM and WotR weren't the reason why they were picked. If it was very much a popularity contest, you'd think Owlcat would adapt Rise of the Runelords first. KM and WotR were picked because Owlcat love the IDEAS (not the mechanics, even they aren't that crazy) of Kingdom Management and the Mythic System, THEY like those APs. Those two APs were well-known for the very heavy flaws before they got turned into a video game, with KM's rather disconnected plot and WotR's Lawful Good forcing and broken Mythic mechanics. Perhaps I'm being a salty 2efag here, but I feel like other 1e APs would have been far better fits to turn into a video game, like Skull & Shackles, Ironfang Invasion, Reign of Winter (granted that one is probably better for a second game than their first attempt just to save the shock value of stuff like the Tesla coils for non-PF fans), or Hell's Rebels. All of these works better as a consistent, focused adventure with some of their own possible mechanical ideas to convert. If you want to argue any 2e AP should be turned into a vidya (not necessarily by Owlcat), I would say APs like Strengths of Thousands, Seasons of Ghosts, Fists of the Ruby Phoenix (would at least make for a GREAT expansion pack quest if need be), or even Age of Ashes if you want to keep it simple. Or of course Abomination Vaults since the nature of it being a video game would FORCE it to have larger hallways, so it would work as a good Temple of Elemental Evil-esque dungeon crawl game. The upcoming Bastion of Blasphemies also just sounds like it would be a peak vidya experience, with it shouting out Castlevania and Dark Souls inspirations already (even if picking a future adventure is cheating). 2e has good picks for APs, just like 1e. It just that Owlcat is well known for their biases on what they think is good Pathfinder content, and you should always remember that.
>>97222455Ah hell you're right, I don't know how that happened, I could have sworn I added it to the post.
How do you justify a "pest race" like goblins or rat people in your setting? Why wouldn't the dominant species make a concentrated effort to eradicate them if they were a problem?
>>97224342That's the most reasonable explanation I can think of. Goblin threads are pretty common there but I don't think I've ever seen them moved here before. If anything they're usually just left to hit the bump limit.
>>97221079To contribute to the "us vs them" tribalism that distracts the unenlightened masses from the underlying problems that really plague the world?
>>97221977That's different, because the government spent the last 5 years actively trying to get more and more of them for cheap labour.Which could make for a fun fantasy setting, importing the greenskins for convenient workers, goblin girls trying to snare a humie husband so they can stay in the kingdom...

I run a post apocalyptic mecha setting and it's pretty comfy. There is still civilization in a few places but the world is ravaged after a huge world war and people mostly band together to fight monsters. There's a lot of introspection and solitude that lets characters really take a breath because they visit a lot of places that were once clearly filled with people everywhere

What the fuck was the Emperor doing during the DAOT and the age of strife?
>>97215204>>97216068...It's literally written there in black and white in Realms of Chaos: The Lost and The Damned, page 174-175>The Emperor is over 50,000 years old.>The Emperor is the collective incarnation of every one of the ancient Stone Age psyker-shamans, who committed suicide to pool their entire power and collective wisdom, honed over millions of years of reincarnations, into a single being that could stand against the rise of Chaos.Retards.
>>97210942BVILT FOR BIG BLOODTHIRSTER COCK
The emperor being immortal and responsible for humanity's progress since pre-history is spin written by a fanatical church. He wasn't 10 feet tall, the most powerful psyker ever etc. that's just how his legend has grown over the 10k years since he fell.Next you'll act like the primarchs were actually his "sons" and not just warlords he recruited and put in charge of the legions during the crusades. Probably with some obviously bullshit, overly complex backstory involving teleportation and time dilation to explain the hundreds of years difference in ages of some of them.
>>97221845Tau hands wrote this
Why did 5.5e drop the ball so hard? Everyone I know who likes 5e is staying with 5.0e. And more than a few of them have moved to 3.5, OSR, or other games entirely. Is WOTC just stupid?
>>972244124e's sub model was hilariously successful and you'd know if you weren't getting made up infographics from PFG
>>972244894e's online tools and plans for a VTT and further products fell apart because of a murder-suicide.
>>97224529lol, you have zero info on anything that happened post release. 4e's sub model included tons of magazine style micro supplements being released all the time, feeding into the most robust character builder at the time. The online tools also served as a much better resource than the old SRDs, including easily printable monster cards that auto-calculated and scaled to level, which were also easily customizable. Every new book also fed directly into this model and so you have this vast repository of things to easily reference and create if you were subbed Like, people loved the crazy convenience of the system and it was a hell of a deal for the average guy. You don't have to like the game, but fucking know what you're talking about.
>>97224577D&D insider was a decent idea and it was the blueprint for D&D Beyond, more or less, but "hilariously successful" in terms of money making is not remotely true. This /biz/ routine you keep doing just leads me to ask one thing of you: Post hands.
>>97224605NTA but DDI could be tracked on the lowball by the D&D Insider group in WotC's community. This was a lowball because you also had to have a community account registered to it (not necessary). In 2013 at one point it had grown to a 81k userbase, with a monthly sub of minimum 10 bucks. Calculate that over a year and you have over 9 million, and 2013 was a slow year because literally no new books came out. I don't know what to tell you except that's crazy revenue on an off year, totally unseen in the industry before that.
I feel like this edition has alot of objectively bad things about it and is absolutely where the alot of worst qualities of current editions showed up. But I feel like I prefer playing this edition compared to a lot of previous editions and 10th edition. Its a weird transitional period where there's still a lot of the old units that haven't been legended yet while still having the fucking Primaris lot. Its strange but I don't feel like I'm missing out on much staying on this edition and playing with friends casually instead of going back to playing the current edition.
>>97213017>Nu40kDo you mean units? Because many of the units are foul.>>97186166>There will never be a definitive editionBy design because they want to milk you for $If for some reason I didn't want to play OPR any more, I'd play the fan SRD for 4th. But that would only be if OPR shits the bed and I didn't like Xenos Rampant or something.
>>97205175Rate it how and for what?
Speaking of 9th, who the hell thought Combat Attrition was a good way of getting people to buy more models?
>>97217289>>97223192Unironically the best part of 10th was when marines had Armour of Contempt. It made marine armour feel significant against small arms fire. That being said, too many attacks, too much AP, too high strength for basic cheap troops in 9th was a nightmare. Orks were balanced good though. The sad thing is the core faction identities were well done, with interesting and varied mechanics. It was the inflation of the basic statline that was a major issue.8th ed statlines with 9th ed faction rules could do the trick
>>97224795Meant 9th, not 10th. I'm retarded
Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency. If you are new to the OSR, welcome!
