Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere. And as we enter this happiest and newest of years, remember: 2e was never an old-school game, bait is for reporting, and fish is for smoking! Happy new year, grogs!Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency. If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:>n00b DM's Guidehttps://pastebin.com/EVvt6P0B>n00b Player's Handbookhttps://pastebin.com/XALkXkV0>Troves, Resources, Blogs, etc:http://pastebin.com/9fzM6128>Need a starter dungeon? >>97337950Call everyone fishfag some more. Let everyone know the extent of what you can do when people call you out.
>>97337996Okay, yeah this definitely could be the wrong general, my apologies if that's the case.
>>97338016No worries, you're sharing enthusiastically and seem open to what others are saying. If you haven't read them yet, I'd like to refer you to the n00b DM's and player's guides in the OP as they give the best idea what kind of things the play espoused in this general is based on. If you have any questions or matters unclear based on that, especially in relation to your campaign, this is still the place to ask, and maybe reading them will give you the perspective to understand why I think your campaign errs on the side of nusr.
>>97337938It's wild how much of a divide there is between the handful of real posts in this thread and all the... whatever the fuck the guy fluffing it is pouring in.
>>97337996>it does not qualify as playing Dungeons & Dragonsyou know it's a step too farby this point it looks like you really are just farming reactions
No, this isn't a thread about "how can I do souls in ttrpg", because picrel is how you can do it. What this thread IS is about this game in specific, and how it can be used to cover aspects of the Soulsbornering games that it doesn't already cover, as well as seeking knowledge from people who have played it already. The game itself is on 1d6/2d4 if you're not aware of it. I've run some test sessions of it and the combat system works, if a bit weirdly. For example, it's too easy to just rollspam through attacks, and certain classes and equipment don't fully match to the game content they represent. For anyone who actually gives a shit, I'm working on an automatic sheet in Excel as well as a few fixes of my own - namely letting Fire Keeper start with the Coiled Sword which they can use as a weapon and catalyst so they're not completely defenseless out the gate. Additionally, prototyping Parry as a mechanic as well, requiring a 6+ Dice whilst wielding a shield or Parry-compatible weapon which inflicts a set amount of Stagger so you'd have to stack Parries on bigger enemies in order to get a full guard break. I'm also prototyping a nerf to Dodge given my earlier complaint about rollspam, making the Stamina cost increase per use in a round until it reaches 6.
>>97321452If you're still around OP, I'd be happy to talk with you about the game and what you have planned for it. I'm not sure that I have much insight to provide but I would like to see the game get more attention. /tg/ sort of slept on Fires Far Away when it was first posted.
>>97328306>>97329160Have we really fallen so far as to not understand what "missing an eye" implies in Norse mythology?
>>97321452will anyone even get to that translation of the Group SNE-made Dark Souls TTRPG or something?
Reading the pdf now and I don't think I've seen another game that uses a mechanic like the Stamina Bar like this before. I've seen games where you throw fistfuls of d6s and hope for successes, but not something where you roll a bunch of d6 and have to spend your actions from it like its a hand of cards. Is this actually a unique mechanic this guy came up with, or are there other games that do this too?

>>97337990>It's entirely possible for them to be able to just shove blackpowder made of like ground up bones and gravesandno, it's not, that's on the same ballpark of expecting kruleboys to deploy mek guns.it's out of touch with the setting at large and the faction in particular.
>>97338008You're overexaggerating here a bit, having some shitty semi-magical blackpowder weapons is nowhere near on par with just having 40k shit and VERY not out of range for shit in AoS. Consider for a moment this is a setting where there are dwarves flying around with magic powered guns in steampunk airships, a bunch of magically altered psychopaths who see themselves as a medieval society finding old caches of guns (WHICH we've already established they find old equipment and can comprehend how to use it) and being able to pull the trigger isn't terrible out there.
>>97337984cool stuff, thanks man
>>97338028the dwarfs with magical guns have magical guns because their entire faction is about high tech and a wide understanding of engineering and alchemythe ghouls' shtick is not being orks with make believe guns that actually workyou cannot make a common unit around the idea of the extremely convenient and rare instance of them finding the unattended supplies this is retarded on multiple levels
>>97338050I'm not saying they make believe, clearly we can justify anything with good enough writing otherwise no one would give a shit about FEC because they would be a bunch of naked retards with no decent story to them. It's a fantastical setting, what would you want as a new unit for ghouls then. Something grounded and to your specific taste you fuckin' nerd.
>paid GMing>AI slop>unironic "badwrongfun"/"you can't play that way" shitThe unholy trinity of what's killing ttrpgs.
>>97334890Anon, they pay for private lounges because there are prostitutes there.

this is the most funniest thread on the board
>>97334890not "banned" but no longer invited lol
I love GMing for people I like so the only payment I need is for people to show upRe. AI art, people that are against that sound insane to me, I used AI art for most NPCs in a campaign I did and it really added an extra layer to every character because I'd put them on the screen (played via Discord + Roll20) when roleplaying as them. I prompted to have a consistent style across all images, I think it was "abstract art of..." or "painting of..." so it felt like a videogame as well as a ttrpg. Consistent music choices are good for that as well.
>>97336831By all means, go right ahead and build your dream jungle/desert/beaches/farmstead table. Personally I like urban settings because Codex Cityfight activated something in me in 2001.
>>97337433This is a very glamorized view of the past in some parts, and factually wrong in other parts.>terrain was much more diverse and varied. >stores had their own suite of unique terrainSometimes! But this is also the era that coined the phrase "Planet Bowling Ball." What happened far more often than people/stores making diverse, unique terrain was people/stores using far too little terrain. And also far too small pieces -- things that did not completely block line of sight -- because the effort, skill and materials cost for tall, broad pieces was much higher than for small things like hills, rocks, alien plants, ruins, etc. The 4th edition area terrain rules provided some relief, since you could use small scatter and say it was X high.>As more "official" terrain has been released the more standardized terrain has gottenThere are pretty much zero tournaments that use all official terrain. The cost is too high and the sourcing is too difficult. As far as I'm aware the standard table layouts do not correspond to any GW terrain products. And if they do, the vast majority of comp players are still buying 3rd party terrain (mdf, 3d prints, acrylic, etc.)
>>97330537On /tg/ there's just not that much to talk about anymore. Every conversation that's substantive in any way immediately devolves into political or political-adjacent bickering. The board is full of autists who hate each other and all hide away in their corporation consumerist generals, and you're only allowed to talk about what's normal in the corporation consumerist generals. You know why you're allowed to mock tables? Because in the corporate consumer general for Warhammer, they think it'd be great if you spent more money and bought more shit, so mocking tables is one of the few safe topics that you can touch that won't have a wannabe Games Workshop community manager screaming at you. That's basically all it comes down to.Just the board being shit now and full of insufferable assholes.
How many more times do I have to destroy your argument before you die of embarrassment?

What is your setting's game's tax policy in your game in your setting?
The tax is time. A wizard magically ages everyone in the kingdom by a day every year and gives the accumulated youth to the king, who then distributes that youth and thus life to his favorites. And the king and his court get progressively weirder and more degenerate every year, because they've been alive for 400 years now and they've literally done nearly everything a human can do.Also may there should be some kind of creeping dementia element to their behavior because a human brain (as far as I know, I'm not too sure on the science) can only physically hold like 200 years of memory if I recall correctly?
>>97337075"You know how your 30s pass by quicker than your 20s? And how your 20s pass by quicker than a year of adolescence? Turns out it's exponential."
>>97332525Setting is littered with buried ruins from ancient wizard society and the magic wars that destroyed them, so adventurers do exist as a class and profession of experts who delve into them to eliminate dangers and recover useful items. They pay 10% on the value of whatever they find to each of: the Crown, whatever town they're operating out of and as a slush fund to be divided among local temples, apothecaries and others who provide support and healing services (30% total tax, may be paid in coin or items). In return they receive free room and board, healing, security services for their treasures and a support team of hirelings to aid the party but only in areas that have been cleared of dangers.
>dungeon town gameThey charge for entry into the dungeon and then charge sales tax as well as rent for market stalls. This has ballooned them into the wealthiest power in the region, if not the continent.>RED Detroit Honestly take current day Detroit's tax policies and it's pretty close

If you want to play a game that doesn't have magic in it at all, play a system that doesn't have magic in it at all.If you want to play a space adventure, play a system designed for space adventures. If you want to play a horror game, play a system designed for horror games.

>>97312825>If you want to play a space adventure, play a system designed for space adventures. There are so many horror stories of redditor campaigns imploding because they pretended science fiction could interchangeably mesh with rules meant for high fantasy
>>97337929Link a few.
>>97314392>There is no reason that 5e can't do space adventures. It's just a reskinningThere's actually quite a few; combat isn't lethal enough, all combat rules are skewed towards hacking and slashing, travel rules are garbage, ship rules are anemic if not non-existent, and probably a whole host of minutiae that isn't accounted for because D&D 5e wasn't meant to be a space adventure game. Spelljammer 5e was dogshit for a reason
Is it better to have fully anthropomorphic beast people in your settings or just humans with like animal ears and tails?
>>97337419>Why do you picture an orc when they are self evidently going to have an elephants head that looks nothing like an orc? Seriously, take a look at a loxodon or loxo from D&D, they are absolutely not a fucking orc despite topping out at 8ft tall.Jeez, man, I dunno, maybe because the post I replied to said 'well, DnD's elephant people are eight feet tall!' and making a fucking elephant person be eight feet tall feels like you're taking an orc, painting him gray, and sticking a trunk and ears on him as to make him look like an elephant. Lackluster. Might as well reduce all your elves to being just humans with slightly sharp ears. Loxo also on average are like seven-ish feet tall. Which means that if you spray-paint an orc gray, and stick an elephant fursuit head on him, you'd get a close Loxo approximation. That's incredible, it's certainly the variance I want to see. To achieve an approximation of a goblin, I will find a 4'10 woman and dunk her into a bath full of rubbing alcohol and green sharpies.>Oh no! Three whole feet taller than D&Ds version, which bumps them to large size and changes little else.>DnD rulesReal patricians convert WoD, and didn't you just complain that it's silly to make elephants bigger? Pick a lane. Also, it's the height of actual elephants. They'd be less heavy due to being bipedal, but that's still a huge bitch, way bigger than eight feet tall. A natural walking tank if it shows up in parts of the world where the average height is six feet; and that's perfectly fine, but the point is finding the fine line separating 'natural walking tanks exist in-setting' and 'every well-off army is made up of giant troops of some sort'.>Are you being retarded and thinking that a species must be both physically and mechanically unique to have a place in a setting? You seem to presume and read really heavily into things to get upset at them for making statements or claims that aren't actually there.
I think furfags can make nice lizard/cat/rat faces but when it comes to canines they always make them look cartoonish.

Are interspecies pairings allowed in your game?
>>97332011There's a dedicated mechanic for it with the half-breed Subspecies. Some options (namely those that don't reproduce sexually) are incompatible with it, but it lets you pick the Species Abilities of one option and the Subspecies ABilities from another Species' Subspecies options to make a hybrid.

>>97333251My S4U works fine, bit if thermal expansion is the problem just get the not 16k version, the problem has nothing to do with the tilt mechanism if that is the case.I can not really believe your part, because the photo shows loads of resin, and even if the film leaks under expansion it is still clamped down, metal to metal and glass, and viscous resin will not simply flow like water. There probably was a bit of a leak, and you made a mess out of it.Else, if it leaked from the bottom, why is the side so crusty with resin?
>>97332093do you feel you get significantly better quality prints when running at 0.02mm layer height? Would there be a point in doing so when printing very small minis?
>>97336020I think it depends on the printer to a point. I tested .05 vs .03 on my photon mono 4k. And didnt really notice a difference. The layer lines were still there just kinda diffrent. Now on my Elegoo Saturn 3 ultra 12k printer, I very much notice the diffrence between .05 and .03 layers. The lines are mostly gone aside from larger prints like tanks or dreadnaughts. And even then you cant see them at all after painting.
