>she looks at a map of the known greenpaths, knowing that a person can cross 4 hexes in 24 hours she calculates that she won't be back in time if she follows the path to Thuja's hut, but there's a shortcut through the woods which she decides to take
>since she travels off the path, Ida encounters a random encounter
>a monstrous atelid (goblin) wielding a boa constrictor as a weapon
>it throws the snake on her and pilfers one of her things while she's distracted: a spell focus, climbing a tree with it
>luckily, that's when she runs into Harald, who helps her take down the menace, and they make it out of the forest none the worse for wear

>within the region of Thuja's hut, Ida and Harald run into Harald's rival(tm)
>Knoet and his two lackey's, Lefty and Snitch, are homunculi that enjoy a relative high esteem under Thuja and lord it over the others
>Harald knows that Knoet carries magic beans with him
>magic beans can shift the tide of battle, they're sources of unpredictable chaos magic
>since Harald has kept it a secret from Thuja that he's no longer loyal to her, he has the opportunity to convince Knoet that he brought a human to their home for a good reason
>I remind the players that when trying to gain interest in the diplomacy, you have to appeal to the particular values and desires of your interlocutor. Harald knows that Knoet cares about status and pride, but fails to find the right words to capitalize on this.

Yes, and that's good. The players should never be forced to do anything with the exception of some game effect against which they get a defense roll, to the extent and in the manner determined by the rules of the effect.
>>

This sounds fun and I like the idea of getting the other people to think of villains.
But I'm sorry to tell you that your thread has been infested by trolls, nobody who actually plays the game would froth from the mouth at mere mention of "story" or "dialogue". Don't pay attention to them.

>unfortunately, the bandits Ida fought before are there and Koenraad's been tied up
>(pretend I didn't forget to mention Ida fought some bandits in the morning, these are human ruffians and honestly the least threatening enemies in the region)
>they demand the magic beans as ransom
>instead, Ida tries using one on them
>now she has to content with my second gimmick system, this one lifted from "Spell: the RPG"
>given a collection of scrabble tiles, she manages to create the words "fall", "jab", and "cob".
>as the magic bean is crushed, glittering dust explodes outwards and covers the ground, when it disappates, it leaves behind an altered reality
>one bandit falls into a sudden hole in the ground, one is jabbed through the torso by an invisible force, and one is transformed into a giant ear of corn
>magic beans are consumables that let you trivialize an encounter
>they hand one over to Koenraad, in accordance with the agreement, and he is extremely grateful, he asks them what they'd want him to bring along next shipment and they mention healing supplies, as Harald had gotten quite hurt over the adventure
>they now have one magic bean left

>meanwhile, the evil conspiracy that has infiltrated the upper echelons of society is having an evil conspiratorial meeting, where they learn their agent, Eldrich Greumpse, has made contact with a bandit leader in the isolated barony of Nebeloort

Speaking of DMG's I got around to trying Mothership the other day and the Warden's Operations Manual is pretty great. There's not a single rule in it, it's just 60 pages of DM advice on how to run a compelling game, and even has sections on how to take notes properly. Really makes me wish I had this 15 years ago when I was starting out.

>What is /awg/?
A thread to talk about minis and games which fall between the cracks, or peoples' homebrew wargames.

The >>>/tg/hwg thread doesn't entertain fantasy (for good reason) and the other threads are locked to more specific games.
This thread isn't tied to a game, a publisher, or a genre, let's just talk about fun wargames. Any scale, any company, any miniatures.

>Examples of games that qualify.
A Song of Ice and Fire, Argatoria, Batman Miniature Game, Carnevale, Conquest: The Last Argument of Kings,
Deadzone, Dragon Rampant, Dropfleet and Dropzone Commander, Freebooter's Fate, Frostgrave, Gaslands, HeroClix,
Kings of War, Maelstrom's Edge, Malifaux, Marvel Crisis Protocol, Masters of the Universe: Battleground, Moonstone,
Oathmark, OnePageRules, Open Combat, RelicBlade, Rumbleslam, SAGA, StarCraft, Stargrave, Sludge, Urban War, Void,
Warcaster, Warmachine, Xenos Rampant, Xenotactics...
...and anything else that doesn't necessarily have a dedicated thread.

>Examples of companies providing rules and/or miniatures for alternative wargames.

Simple rule to improve and balance wizards in OSR games: they can only memorize one casting of a given spell per day. You have 3 third level slots? You can cast one Fireball, not 2 or 3. Don't know any other 3rd level spells? Better go find some spellbooks. Hope you make your % chance to learn spell rolls (I won't bother addressing faggots who let wizards automatically learn new spells). God forbid you have to get more creative with your casting.

>no reason why the rod of disintegration isn't in the first dungeon.
Because someone would already have it if it was
>>
>>97815205
They are dumb. There are other ways to balance casters that don't involve half the party being underleveled or having to use shitty XP-based progression like it's an MMO where the players can fuck off to kill 1 XP rabbits for 60 sessions to level up.
>Skill Points are dumb
They aren't dumb, but they could have been handled better I think to prevent modifiers from getting out of hand so quickly. That said, I fixed this easily with my overhauls of 5.5's classes, Rogues get 6 proficiencies, Fighters get 5, other full martials get 4, half-casters get 3, full casters get 2, and you pick any skills you like from the list. Bards also uniquely get 3 given their weird support caster-rogue shit (but they lose access to Jack of All Trades. That is instead given to Rogue at level 1).
>>

Verisimilitude isn't realism, it's internal consistency.
>>
>>97801330
And that's why 5e players like yourself should be banned.

>Now do the same in SW
>[epic clever battle sequence that lets them add up to kill the enemy golem]
I wish it worked that way, but unfortunately what happens instead is, someone with a hypertuned damage build rushes the golem in melee screaming and gets 5 aces and kills the golem with like 40 damage while the rest of the table laughs hysterically.
I really wish it worked like that though. I can't remember the last time my Savage Worlds group actually used the trick fighting or test of wills rules. All they do is Wild Attack because it's objectively the best option to get 2 bonuses for 1 downside and usually their Parry is so high that even if they do Wild Attack the penalty doesn't actually affect them.

Army trait rules were a mistake. Back in my day all a sub-faction did was determine which colour you painted your models, and people liked it. All legion traits have done is lead to constant whining and complaints from entitled little shits like you, about how their army's trait isn't strong enough or doesn't have the "flavour" they think it needs to have, or whatever else. The only other thing it cause is WAACfags flocking to whatever is the legion with the currently strongest trait and pretend that they always liked that legion, honest, they just didn't get around to painting that legion before.

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:

EXPEDITION is a ~1880s era, Jules Verne-inspired retro-futurist, underground blood soaked adventurescape.

It's because they're the masters of brainwashing and work on a long scale. They are the carrot while the rest of the Imperium is the stick. They seed missionaries and orders of sisters who act as spies to slowly crumble the host culture generations before Imperial forces show up. All to make the host culture naturally more subservient to their new masters. And if they don't, they can be wiped out and replaced by pilgrims.
