The other day there was a thread about how convenience is the death of sovl in vidya and i’d say this game encapsulates this perfectly. Modernizing these games just puts them in an ugly middleground where they feel too “modern” to be retro and too retro to be modern

It's tied to like 80 fucking things including the exact date you play the final level, acquiring items which are bugged and might not drop, and picking very specific choices everywhere.

And yes, a big counter towards it is choosing one of two random choices given to you at the very beginning. The other choice does not do anything.

Back in the 90s, it was still common for people to go outside without taking selfies for social media clout or chasing after the latest health trend taking TikTok by storm. This allowed for children to learn basic understandings of the natural environment beyond meta concepts drilled into them at school.
Children would learn from first-hand experience, their parents, and other adult mentors who similarly grew up in a non-connected, natural environment.
Rain and water would naturally wash away loose sediment and soil, and would reveal natural caverns and other rock formations.

I assumed you are supposed to keep track of the chapter count and go search if you are skipping numbers. But never really put it in pratice to check if you have points of no returns in between secret chapter and regular chapter

What am I talking about? Well, the RSPS scene (RuneScape private server) has preserved various versions of the game.

RuneScape classic (2001 - 2003): Jesus christ is this shit tedium incarnate. There's no reason to ever play this.

The shift to RS2 occurred in 2004. There is an RSPS called 2004scape that is still in the year 2004, but will gradually go to 2006. Judging the game purely based off the year 2004? You do not want to be playing this version of the game. Watching paint dry will be more entertaining. It's in the same boat as RSC. When it gradually shifts to 2005 and 2006? Same issue. The problem is that old RuneScape wasn't good.

2007 RS (Vidyascape) - Terrible server, terrible version of the game. Why? Because 2007 RuneScape wasn't good. Nostalgia simulator watch paint dry.

2009scape - This is a 2009 version of the game but sadly they are having to recreate much of the game from scratch. What is offered is good, and it's the first server on the list that actually offers properly boosted xp. You might be like boosted xp, in a private server?! Yes. If you want 1:1 grinding go play the live game. However, there is a huge caveat. The game is still tedious as fuck and not really worth playing at all.

2011scape - Lesser known server and forked off from 2009. Features Dungeoneering and stuff, but is mostly missing most of the content.
>>
>>729129858
CONT.

2012scape - Same thing as 2011, but with lodestones and the toolbelt. I actually think this is the best server on the list because RuneScape is always better with MORE updates, not less. But that's my personal hot take. STILL tedious to play overall despite boosted xp. Why? Because RuneScape is historically an extremely tedious game.

OSRS - In my honest opinion, despite adding more quality of life than ever, this game is not worth playing. It is extremely tedious, still slow, and infested with bots. There's nothing here for ME. I've moved on.

RS3 - I genuinely think this is the best version of the game by far. Proper quality of life, more quests than ever, more skills, so many ways to train and bypass grinds (even on ironman). Of course the game is all about grinding, but ironman saves this game. Main is okay too not going to lie especially now that they are removing treasure hunter.

RS3 won.

It's literally just ubislop

I always see people calling fighting games dead, especially when they are referring to other skill based 1v1 games like arena shooters or RTS. But here is the thing, fighting games are more alive than they have ever been. You need to remember that fighting games are also on console, and most modern fighting games have crossplay enabled. Take the steam daily peak player count and triple it, that is basically the true daily peak of available players. I'd say there are probably anywhere from 100,000 to 200,000 unique players daily when you take into account all modes. Compared to arena shooters, fighting games are incredibly thriving. We have active local scenes, competitive scenes, and online scenes. The biggest name in arena shooters only gets a peak of 400 players daily. RTS games may be a bit more popular than fighting games when it comes to player count, but our competitive and local scenes are actually alive and thriving. When you compare fighting games to other popular games, you have to remember it is a 1v1 game. A better metric to compare it to other games is to take the number of possible matches that could be happening at a time.

For example, in order to fill an ARC Raiders lobby you need 21 players. Lets take the peak and divide it by the amount of players you need to have a match.

>445,973/21 = 21237

Now lets do the same for Street Fighter 6

>37,646/2 = 18823

Note, these are only Steam numbers, the amount of playable matches at peak hours is actually much greater. Outside of the titans, the "liveliness" of SF6 is comparable to most popular multiplayer games.

Sorry for the bad grammar, I'm ESL.

Still didn't hold as much weight as it does now. Again back then companies were literally scamming people with ridiculous box art with aliens and fantasy dragons and all kinds of shit and then you get the game and it's pixelated dog shit. Nowadays it matters because people are going to tweet and screech about how their favorite celebrity and fag streamer isn't the on the cover art or cover athlete. Which is ironic since most people buy digital and won't even see the cover of the game besides the 2 secs of them clicking to start the app up.

yeah or maybe it was the alien illuminati reptillians?

I don't know why, but it seems like nowadays, the modding community is pretty much dead. It used to be that mods would basically transform a game and would be a completely new experience than playing vanilla. Now it seems like now all that happens is a few basic UI overhauls or some other non-interesting nonsense.

I think the biggest sign of this is when the FF7R director asked players not to make "lewd" mods when the game was released on PC. Back in the olden days, there would have been tons of lewd mods on release just to spite him. Now all we get are a few dresses and some Reddit-tier "muscle mommy" garbage.

How do we revive the modding community?
>>
>>729129240
Because anybody that puts in the effort to make mods, is probably doing so to get in the industry, and not making a mod for no pay. Can't say I blame them.
It's not like what it was 25+ years ago when making a mod only took maybe a year or two to finish, and that was just a few guys in their spare time, it takes several years of full time hours, and by then, you could have already made your own game and sold it.
>>
>>729129240
This is because all those old modders grew up and got real jobs and families and Gen Z and Gen Alpha are not interested in making mods. And the people that do make good mods are all gen xers like Xilandro or Hitman.
>>
