This talk of the Syndicate and the economy makes me wonder what WoD would be like if it was written today after two decades of the internet becoming so dominant. On the one hand everything is a lot more sanitized now, on the other hand I feel like the level of conspiracies and debauchery have risen much. We'd probably see the Rothschilds in a 202X WoD original, assuming it wasn't written by cucks.
>>
>>97318113
You'd need good writers that are actually in touch with current day issues instead of mentally stuck in the 90's like current parawolf is.
However, I imagine the mage side of the timeline is like this:
>In the 2000's, the virtual adepts betray the traditions to try and usurp the technocracy as the leading paradigm with the ascendance of the internet, but get their dominance eaten away with a combined effort from the NWO and Syndicate.
>The NWO then promptly goes made with power after seeing they have a direct tap into the collective unconscious of humankind and tries to become uncontested in their dominance of the technocracy by trying to take complete control of the digital web.
>The syndicate try to push against them, but fail get a large portion of their field assets seized
>The NWO then try to move to a one-world government too far ahead of the timetable, causing mass destabilization of the technocratic paradigm as sleepers start unconsciously rebelling against the concept of total government control of their lives.
>>
>>97318113
>We'd probably see the Rothschilds in a 202X WoD original
The NWO would unironically be be staffed by mostly jews. I say a large portion of the syndicate too, with the jews and non-jews having an internal civil war over control of the convention.
>>
>>97318113
Let's work from the ground up. What story would they want to tell, and what would be the message the writers would aim for? Maybe I am missing something, but I don't remember the point of Winter's Teeth or the visual novels.
I believe that is probably on me, even if I am not sure. I have the analytic skills of a potato.
>>
>>97318113
I think for Mage a lot would stay the same, but it'd definitely refocus things towards the Internet. NWO want to use it to control people, Syndicate want to exploit the ecommerce potential, Void Engies want to explore it, Iteration X probably jizzes in their pants over the idea of VR. The Traditions would be mostly unchanged since they're so backwards, with the obvious exception of the VA being ascendant in their success and then getting fucked over by how the wild west got tamed again. Maybe the Etherites have something going on with discovering new tech too.

no this game is just dead
other systems have weekly releases, ongoing adventure paths, announced splat books, etc
wotc decide to make dnd this sclerotic boring garbage that has the minimal amount of content, and when it does it's always 100% garbage
>>
>>97318014
5e is just... weird now. honestly they built the game way too marvel superheroes like that any sense of adventure is simply gone. level 1 players are incredibly powerful with tons of starting items and abilites. i just dont get why they did that.
>>
>>97318196
I've taken my own path with 5e because my friends whom I play with IRL insist on using the system. They're "casuals" in the sense that they dont have time to learn anything else and, well, I'm just happy to play with them. But I am pretty brutal with certain rules.
>Players start at level 0
>Rank up to Level 1 after completing introductory task (usually something fairly simple) and more focused on roleplay
>Level 1
Here players have no gold, weapons, armor, etc. If they are magic based, they know only 1 cantrip of their choice. In order to progress in a class, the player needs to find someone to train them or else risk the wilds. We do milestone level ups, and these are fairly straight-forward. So far a number of PCs have died, but those that have survived are coming along pretty well. By level 5 though the power gaming is simply a little too much for them. Exploration is basically meaningless and it seems that 5e is tailored more for Critical Role live action performances and for BG3 players that don't like to play TTRPGs.
>>
>>97318147
Yeah that’s true. I remember in the 3.5 or even 4e days we had a lot of splatbooks and builds to talk about at least. The complete X series was a favorite of mine. What do we have with 5e? Two different editions that have the exact same issues and an extra subsystem or two that could have easily been a splatbook. Circle magic which is clearly poorly thought out and OP. It also encourages everyone to go casters for spell slots when magic was already overused. And the new artwork…jesus christ even when it’s not woke as fuck they can’t hire anyone who doesn’t tick enough DEI boxes so their pool is pretty limited.

>>97318196
Level 1 5e isn’t that OP. But if we’re comparing it to OSR games sure, you don’t immediately die when hit I guess.

The /btg/ is dead! Long live the /btg/!

The history post-clan invasion is absolutely fucked m8, as is anything built upon it. If you can directly trace it back to dark age and bullshit like that, it's immediately spoiled.
It's like star wars needing to build off of the disney canon or fallout building off of the bethesda canon, god help anyone genuinely trying to do worldbuilding with modern starcraft or warcraft. It's all fucked, it's unrecoverable without a full reset or something that is practically a full reset, like an AU or something.
>Mechs, people and planets do not come out of nowhere like they do in 40k
Pretty sure mechs have been being conjured out of thin air since xin sheng.
>because they want to turn the goddamn place into a mystery box full of lazy writing
Man.
>>
>>97318120
The problem with a full reset is that the odds of a whole cloth re-imagining of the entire setting timeline has a 0% chance of being coherent. The goal cannot be, for example "Jihad sucks, lets replace Jihad" because the reason Jihad is in trouble is because it was a massive slapped on piece of duct tape between FCCW and Dark Age.

If anything is to be changed it has to be measured retcons and rewrites in situ. If Xin Sheng doesn't make sense we can't rip it out and put in something else called Xin Sheng and just hope that the timeline heals, we have to set the bones that are there. Similarly we can't look at Jihad and just dumpster the WoBies as they're written, we have to fix what's broken and see to it that it doesn't break anything else.

Besides that, nostalgia isn't necessarily a bad thing for a lot of Battletech and what is changed too much ceases to be Battletech.
>>
Anyone tried painting the cockpit glass gold? How does it look?
>>
>>97317879
Seconding this. FCCW+Jihad has a large amount of weapons and equipment but aside from some rear experimental stuff it's still all in Total Warfare, and you have a large amount of mech designs and actually decent upgraded variants of the older mechs (a lot of the original Clan Invasion upgrades suffer from "new toy syndrome", where they just crammed in new tech without really thinking how it works, so you got stuff like the Panther with an ERPPC but not enough heat sinks to fire it without overheating even when standing perfectly still, or slow heavies and assaults replacing large lasers with large pulse lasers).
DA/ilClan starts having too much specialist gear with rules that are only found in TacOps or Interstellar Ops and most of those are sidegrades or outright trap-options anyway.

I use metallic instead of jeweling and this is how it turns out for me. I like to think of it like polarized sun-screen.

Popular Choices for Games:

>Mutants & Masterminds
Currently the most played one, uses a d20 resolution for everything, has powers building and rules for tactical combat.

>Marvel TSR/ FASERIP
Classic Supers game from the 80s, still has a lot of fans and various retro-clones. Uses a d100 with an universal resolution table to decide the degree of success, has random character generation and abstract rules for powers and combat.

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere. And as we enter this happiest and newest of years, remember: 2e was never an old-school game, bait is for reporting, and fish is for smoking! Happy new year, grogs!

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:

>Otherwise I just choose 1 or 2 fitting Class Proficiencies
You mean for classed NPCs?
>>
>>97317075
Yes, although the occasional 0th level NPC having a Class Proficiency can be fun as well, like a mage apprentice with Hedge Wizardry or a princess with Beast Friendship.
>>
>>97317453
Fair enough. At the very least I could "salvage" them or individual NPCs that I do want to characterise. Since you mention Hedge Wizardry, do you use cantrips? I'm on the fence on those as well.
>>
>>97317609
I told my players that they can select the cantrip Proficiencies if they're casters, but no one did so yet.
Only the aforementioned apprentice NPC got Hedge Wizardry, introduced him having used Overlookability to escape some Orcs. Players rescued him and one hired him as a henchman, he's currently studying to earn his last few hundred XP to get to level 1.
>>
>>97317792
>I told my players that they can select the cantrip Proficiencies if they're casters, but no one did so yet.
I think by the Axioms rules all casters get them by default, as many cantrips as they can cast 1st level spells? Or do they require the proficiency?

>he's currently studying to earn his last few hundred XP to get to level 1.
That's another thing I'm not planning to use from ACKS, the idea that everyone can become a classed character with a few hundred XP. But that's pretty easy to house rule, I'm not worried.

Yeah, the closeness of the time periods does kind of throw off the feeling for them in comparison to the others, even in the same book.
Though I will say part of me half wishes they would have thrown in a set of Axis versions for the Aesir (Germany), Amatsukami (Japan), and Dodekatheon (Italy) even if it was probably for the best to not have Nazi General Odin, Italian fascist Mars, and Kamakaze pilot Raiden though it would have been funny.
>>
>>97257539
At it's basic premise, it's a supers game where every character shares the same power origin. So ask yourself "what does this game do better (or even equal to) Champions/HERO, Mutants & Masterminds, or Strange Fate?"

Answer: Nothing.

There's some neat fluff and ideas, but not enough to make it worth actually playing Scion (either edition) when other games handle those sorts of battles and power scales better.

>druids are mages who gain power from nature (not just implies, but directly requires the existence of cultural institutions known as druid circles)
>bards are mages who gain power as an intrinsic quality of music and lore (etc etc etc)
almost every class in 5E carries massive implications for the setting. it's one reason why that entire system sucks ass

Barbarians should be savage light skinned warriors who work under a dark lord seeking the downfall of greater civilizations led by wise kings and queens of prestigious lineages and darker complexions

>Also, can tyranids interbreed with or gain biomass from daemons
Generally, no. There may be weird exceptions. In particular, I recall an instance in which CSM (Iron Warriors, I think) captured a Tyranid bio-ship, dragged it into the Eye of Terror, and infected it with the Obliterator Virus in order to turn it into some kind of weird hybrid daemon engine. Chaos corrupted Tyranids are probably possible if they get into the Wrap somehow (normally the Hive Mind's materialist tendencies and sheer power prevent this, but getting caught in a rift or warp drive explosion or something is still possible). It's hard to say how they would behave or interact with daemons once in this situation. Daemons aren't biological matter and don't have genes, but within the Warp those facts might not be relevant enough to stop Tyranids from eating them (or more likely just getting possessed and mutated while still acting kind of like real tyranids in some ways).

>went unmentioned for so long it's basically treated as soft-retconned
Have you not paid attention to GW trends of the past decade? Half of all new lore is just recycled old lore. We are a few quarters of GSC selling poorly away from getting a Chaos Genestealer killteam.

Without canon, you're just playing in a toolbox without condition or consideration. Terrible way to play.

Not really.
Cool stuff stays in, lame stuff is out.

The canon is flooded with cool shit though. Just what lame things do you know of?
