>What is /awg/?
A thread to talk about minis and games which fall between the cracks, or peoples' homebrew wargames.
The >>>/tg/hwg thread doesn't entertain fantasy (for good reason) and the other threads are locked to more specific games.
This thread isn't tied to a game, a publisher, or a genre, let's just talk about fun wargames. Any scale, any company, any miniatures.

>Examples of games that qualify.
A Song of Ice and Fire, Argatoria, Batman Miniature Game, Carnevale, Conquest: The Last Argument of Kings,
Deadzone, Dragon Rampant, Dropfleet and Dropzone Commander, Freebooter's Fate, Frostgrave, Gaslands, HeroClix,
Kings of War, Maelstrom's Edge, Malifaux, Marvel Crisis Protocol, Masters of the Universe: Battleground, Moonstone,
Oathmark, OnePageRules, Open Combat, RelicBlade, Rumbleslam, SAGA, StarCraft, Stargrave, Sludge, Urban War, Void,
Warcaster, Warmachine, Xenos Rampant, Xenotactics...
...and anything else that doesn't necessarily have a dedicated thread.

I'm so bummed by this. we finally get an SC minis line and they go for some scale creepers delight 35mm heroic bullshit scale, and for what? sure the hydralisk looks cool but now if they try to do any vehicles or big creatures it's going to be fucked. shit should have been 12mm or 15mm.
>>
>>97325840
wild west exodus was decent if you want a skirmish game. should have stat blocks for anything you might want to reskin.
platoon scale I'd probably use xenos rampant. technically for sci-fi but it's flexible enough to cover steampunk and weird war pretty easily.

How is that contradictory, all dozens of the female magic players will buy in, and no one else will. Thus it'll flop. Seems pretty straightforward to me anon, what do you think?

I have a character in my Dark Heresy campaign who was experimented on by the Ordo Malleus by having the bone marrow of a dead saint implanted into her. It worked and sorta gave her some minor daemonic resistance, but we can't tell if it's from her own faith or not, but it's had the side effect of slowly turning her into the saint- messily, at that. Her face is this messed up patchwork of differently colored skin splotches from where the two colors are mixing and the saint's face is starting to take hers over. She's got high-heeled armor- but only on ONE leg, because her other leg started getting longer and she needs it to roughly even her gait out. There's actually a running bet on if she was even a woman before the experiment or not.

What's the weakest spell in the D&D magic user/wizard repertoire that could be used to proverbially "break the setting" in the hands of an asshole player with a bad GM?

Yep, even Create Food and Water as a spell is third level. And by old setting standards a level 5/6 cleric would be so rare it is barely used. Even then their 3rd level slots would be prioritized elsewhere like scrying and healing.

If your GM gives you all the downtime you want to Craft, then you break the game in half because you can get everything at effectively half price, which snowballs very, very fast. I played a Crafter Wizard in 1e Kingmaker and it was fucking crazy.

If your GM doesn't give you the time to craft you've basically spent feats on nothing, though even with little time available Scribe Scroll is still likely to be useful.
>>
>>97317097
Should be noted that you break the game with magic item/gear/construct crafting, Whereas crafting skills (excluding maybe craft alchemy) are generally not worth it without houserules even if GM gives silly amounts of free time for using them (some exceptions that usually involve stull like Blood Money apply).

>Is 1e Brawler a decent class to go with a Magus, Sorcerer, and Ranger?
If you're starting at a low level and the Ranger is... ranged, then you're likely lacking brawn. DEX brawler deals no damage at early levels and STR brawler has no AC. I'd start out with a level in Bloodrager or Fighter so that you have good armor and weapon proficiency, and twohand a reach weapon for AoOs. Then when enemies get within your reach you beat them to death with STR flurry. Two good archetypes for STR brawlers are Battle Dancer and Exemplar since they trade out the AC bonus you can only use in light armor.
>>
Roommates and I just finished Welcome to Derry, what do you guys think Pennywise would be solely based on feats? The lore basically treats him as being on par with an ancient eldritch deity but clearly he's severely nerfed compared to his prime by the time we get to him in the Stephen King books.

GURPS is a modular, adaptable system, capable of running a wide range of characters, settings, and play styles, with a level of detail varying from lightweight to completely autistic.
Optional rules allow you to emulate different genres with a single system, or even switch genres within a single game.

A nearly complete archive of GURPS books can be found by using the image. Never post direct links to the archive anywhere in plain text.

If you're wondering where to start:
- The Basic Set covers everything, including a lot of optional rules you probably won't use.
- A genre guide can be found in the archive, under Unofficial/GURPSgen. It tells you what extra books and articles you may find useful for many common genres.
- How To Be a GURPS GM is a good read even for players.
- GCS (gurpscharactersheet.com) is an excellent character-builder software, with page references to all the books and the option to export to both Foundry and Fantasy Grounds.

Thread question: What are some systems or you would like to include or see included in a campaign, but haven't been able to? They don't have to be the main focus of the game, having them only as something on the side is okay.

Chinese Elemental Powers is the main one.
There is also material in the Basic Set, Martial Arts, and many Dungeon Fantasy supplements.
Powers and Power Ups 1: Imbuements have options for making chi abilities too.
>>
>>97324050
Depends on what you are willing to accept, but if you want a slow-and-subtle system without the issues of too much flexibility, Path and Book (Thaumaturgy) is the way to go. If you want a flexible system which is fairly quick and blasty rather than slow and subtle, then Discworld magic or Incantation Magic (Dungeon Fantasy). If you want a system which is fast, unsubtle, and inflexible, then probably some kind of advantaged based one, and you might as well use Sorcery spells but just don't have the huge points-sink modular abilities advantage and simply pay for your most expensive spell. If you want cosmic-horror style stuff, then maybe try Logos, Noumena, and/or Dimensional Control from Powers: the Weird.
>>
>>97324862
If you're trying to quickly resolve squad combat abstractly I used a real quick and dirty system for my GURPS Rainbow Six game (GURPSthena Sword) that may work. I just made a contested tactics roll between the leaders with a +1 modifier added for each bonus. Each margin of success over the other was one damage, applied randomly, each squad member had two damage with one leading to a wound and two death.

Going to be running a 4man cinematic-ish game with the half gun damage rule in TL8
Players are going to be up against crystal ayy lmaos made of psychic rape
What's a good starting point to make them super fucking durable but not immortal to rifle-sized arms? Like able to survive a few rounds of "everybody in the squad focus fire on this or we get our brains pulled out our anus"
>>
>>97325535
Injury Tolerance: Homogenous will severely limit how much damage guns do. Some level of DR seems reasonable for crystalline monsters, but be cautious about setting it so high that melee attacks and shotguns become worthless; around 4 should work fine.
Assuming your dudes are civilians but have access to serious hunting rifles, then damage might be around 3d+2(2) pi, which comes to about 2 points per hit. Multiple hits per character per turn are possible, but maybe not likely as many of them may only have bolt-action weapons or struggle to land even one hit against a man-sized target if there are a few penalties like darkness, range, psychic obscure effects, and so on.
If the creatures have about 20 HP and HT 10, they should be able to tank a couple of seconds of non-stop rifle fire from four guys without falling over. Even 10 HP might be enough. I recommend some level of Hard to Subdue, because otherwise you end up with them passing out well before they die.

I have some questions and a premise for a thread.

> 1. What is the best system to run a one-shot campaign emulating the story of No Country For Old Men in a way that captures the "FUN" of the movie?

>2. If you could make a system for this one-shot to be played from, what would you put into that is notable?

>3. What other scenarios would be interesting to play in this style?

Having divergences in the story would obviously be critical, like if Moss had actually killed Anton, for it to be fun, but other than just plain ole' rolling dice how would a game where an individual plays as Anton Chigurh, another plays as Lewellyn Moss, another plays as Carson/The Sheriff, etc etc work?

Should mecha have hands? Should the hands be humanlike? If they shouldn't have hands, what should they have? If no hands, why even have arms?

Hands are good for general-purpose mechs designed to do human-like work at industrial scales. Unless you can make the entire process handled by machines there's going to be human-style interfaces, and it's easier to change a mech than change how people conceptualize tasks.
>>
>>97316706
Yes. Planar breaches, cataclysms and storms mean that there is a lot of resources dropping everywhere. D&D has planes("dimensions") of Earth and Minerals that during breaches gonna drop metals, gems, crystals and so on everywhere. Of course you don't want to be there while all of that stuff is falling down or fountaining from the ground. Not good for your health. So everyone uses mechs or titans (basically living or undead mechs) to move their bases around.

Typical troll tribe would have a big four or six limbed titan capable of housing all the people and their stuff, so something like 100-300 feet in length depending on tribe size, a bunch of way smaller humanoid or centauroid titans like 20 feet tall and a couple 50 feet tall elite titans for the tribe chief and possibly shaman.
Elves have similar setups only with plant titans and enchanted mithral mechs/golems.
Dwarves and humans have actual city sized mechs that are exactly that - moving cities.
Drow are way closer to proper nomands since they mostly stick to mechs and titans no larger than 50 feet.
Necromancers are on the rise after carving a place for themselves and getting proper time to use their labor advantage, though in exchange most of their undead titans are shit quality wise due to using mindless zombies and skeletons to build them.

Typically people have a couple diviners or other specialists whose job it is to predict where the planar weather will strike around them and ideally of what type it will be. Then they either move the fuck away or try to find a close enough parking spot if they expect the cataclysm to drop useful stuff.
>>
>>97321144
Cont.

Building smaller mechs, under 50 feet, is pretty easy since it can be done fast enough you should be able to finish a skeleton for one between cataclysms, most of the time. You also can easily carry unfinished ones on your cargo/housing mech. Plus if you have some larger species among your workers it makes it even easier. Problems start when you need to build something really big - like the main settlement mech or a proper castle sized combat mech, or something else just as crazy.

Trolls and elves get around it by growing their titans. So they can start with a couple smaller ones and then graft them together into a single one, though going above 300 feet is still super hard.
Undead are tireless, even if not that strong, so they could drag a lot of stuff around, but again quality problems.
Humans and dwarves are kinda stuck with what they managed to build before portal got closed and planar weather bullshit started - they managed to add some castle sized mechs to their lineups and both are trying to build new city mechs by building parts for them on castle sized factory/cargo mechs, though they didn't yet succeed since it makes it take way more time and effort.

>>97301969
>heck, one of my players uses stealth constantly. He has modified boosters with lower performance but lower sound and he uses silencers on his firearms (on top of mechs using subsonic ammo by default in my setting)
Why is mech ammo subsonic by default?

>and he mostly attacks with throwing knifes or palm attacks. He does it by having smoke launchers and several grenade launchers that create heavy poisonous gas clouds (they fight monsters that are somewhat organic, and the gas is built to attack them).
Neat! Robo-ninja FTW.

>He usually smokes/poisons the enemies and then hides behind cover to get them through sneak attacks while debilitating stronger enemies. It works surprisingly well despite the fact he's piloting a 25ft tall mech.
This sounds really fun. How does he keep his mech's footfalls quiet?

Not racist somewhat in the same ballpark. I played a Pirate Princess of the Ragged Helix in a Black Crusade game who had the "Hatred: Other Women" talent due to background shenanigans.

Her father had made a bet with one of his siblings that he could raise a daughter that was every bit as ruthless as he was. She was taught from birth that all women are weak and pitiful but that she would have to be stronger and better than the rest. When she was old enough to enlist her father enlisted her in the imperial navy in a remote sector under a false name, where she had to fight her way tooth, nail and pointed stiletto boot up the local misogynistic imperial naval chain of command. One command of a sword-class corvette and misjump into the screaming vortex, some misfortunes with pirates, a duel for leadership where she killed the pirate leader later and it was a pirate's life for her

She took a special cruel joy in disposing other women and being active misogynistic bitch of a captain. Fun character to play, shame the campaign ended prematurely when the GM lost interest in running a bad guy campaign.

of course, because, unlike in our world, definitive biologically different races are a reality in most traditional game settings and therefore, being racist against them is no different than being racist to a Neanderthal or other hominid i.e. completely justified. There is a reason uncanny valley exists

>If you watch the movie you'd know that the woman is more psychotic and violent; she's basically a pirate queen that worships fire
Okay where are the negatives?

Poker? I barely knew her!

I was thinking of making a thread actually since I played a game with friends recently and got absolutely rinsed. What's the secret? How do I get better at this game?

Pretty rarely. /tg/ is a board in over a decade of severe decline, however. /v/ and even a shithole like /x/ are healthier.
