Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to TSR-era D&D, derived systems, and compatible content.

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons as played in the game's first decade — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching meta-plots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started.

It's just that I'm 30 and both of these ways to play came way before my time - I had no idea there were such factional splits in "D&D society". I'm enjoying discovering literal D&D lore. I think a documentary needs to be made about this - Attenborough style.

>>96766672
>Ohhh, you mean like that. No, that's just goofy, nothing to do with us.
Well that's what I thought for 15 years.

So my conclusion - there are 3 types or DnD:
>old wargaming SAW simulator sandbox DnD
>goofy costume DnD
>modern heroic power fantasy DnD
>>
>>96766611
>It's just in my experience, whenever people in a fandom or hobby try to dismiss somebody for muh racism, the person in question tends to be more knowledgeable and passionate about the hobby than them.

You've got to keep in mind that guy wasn't "dismissing" them for being racist/misogynistic, he was explaining that was part of the identity they present and identify with, because that's genuinely how they've decided to present themselves. It's actually part of this whole stupid "culture war" business, where "trad gaming" is for straight white males and everything else is for women and minorities, and the more "traditional" your games are, the more you're definitely 100% not a homosexual.

The main reason the BrOSR is a bunch of fags is the whole arguing about what the "True Old School" is. The politics business is just the unfortunate reality we live in, where politics gets dragged into everything. Feel free to ignore that part, especially on 4chan.
>>
>>96766611
>>You know those guys who keep spamming "freakshit/storyshit/storygame" nonsense about how if you don't play White Male Fighters with no personality, you're a homosexual deviant?
>No, I really don't, because I'm a board tourist.
FYI, that doesn't happen here. Not sure the extent to which it happens in the BrOSR, but this isn't a BrOSR board, that's twitter culture wars bullshit. He's making shit up in a desperate attempt to disrupt a constructive and respectful conversation.

You might enjoy Secrets of Blackmoor, then! It's a documentary covering the years that led to the creation of OD&D. Heavily focused on Arneson's contributions.

>Have Drow faction in my DnD homebrew
>Want them somewhat familiar to new players yet being different
Is this even possible? My setting is an Age of Sail world where all the elemental and other planes of existence are forced into the Material Plane and the Drow ended up in a caldera out at sea where they hastily had their spiders shit out a ton of webbing to create a canopy of webs that block out the sun. Lolth has gone silent and they aren't sure what to do now.
>>
>>96766545
The Lolth-autism is already an unfortunate big part of the D&D-like drow idea. Makes these drow about finding their own meaning and place in this world without this goddess, including internal strife and warring factions with different viewpoints. Some may want to uphold the matriarchy, while others realize that the women are far less powerful without the bitch backing them up. Some may even be not outright evil and more willing to cooperate with other races.
>>
>>96766569
I think diplomacy and trade are going to be interesting; previously they could raid the material plane nations and scamper back to the Underdark knowing they were safe; now they are only a mere boat ride distance from their wary neighbors.
>>
>>96766545
Naturally, they should make magical submarines. Trade underground for underwater, and keep raiding the surface.

Maybe instead of Lolth they discover a kraken or whatever, priesthood claim that's Lolth avatar, and they worship that, pretending Lolth is still behind them.

Let's have a positive terrain thread.

The grid is made up of interlocking 8x8-inch parts.
Its main selling point is its modularity and the ease with which things can be added.
>>
>>96765311
I see. I guess there are people who'd need this too.
I don't often increase or decrease the sizes of my tables so that I'd have to change my boards' sizes too, so it was weird to me.
>>
>>96765125
Xps is durable enough that if you handle it with basic care it won't break. You can dent it with dice and minatures but you'd really have to drop some heavy dice or minatures on them to ruin a piece.
Xps is the best option IMO it cuts easily with a knife, better with a hot knife cutter (but you'll need a vented room + face mask with filter to be safe. Everyone says its perfectly fine to breath in the fumes but I don't trust anyone on this)
Non acidic glue (PVA or modge podge) and black paint+water is what I use to seal and prime my pink foam for painting. It creates a protective layer that will keep it safe in normal play situations. Water will react with the glue though so be careful with that.
The terrain tutor on YouTube taught me alot when I was first getting into building. Just know your first few projects will look bad until you pick up the skills and techniques. Like everything practice makes perfect!
>>
>>96765190
Polystyrene foam, should be able to get it from your hardware store in the density and thickness appropriate to the bone size you want.
>Draw out semicircle from outside top edge lengthwise.
>draw out smaller semiciricle inside it, leaving space to cut
>repeat for smaller and smaller ribs
>cut out, cut 1/2 circles into 1/4s
>sand to shape, base
Some anons have used putty as the main part around wire, or as an easier way to get broken bone effects.
Modge podge or other textures for bone vary.
>>
>>96762352
Maybe, but other than a pair of (not terribly good) tinsnips, I don't really have the tools for it.
All in all, I think I just made it too big of a project, so I'm gonna step back from it for a bit.

Trench Crusade General - /trench/
Let's Make A Warband Generator Edition

>What is Trench Crusade?
An alternate weird history 28mm/32mm tabletop skirmish game still in a pre-release playtesting phase but with the full release slated for this year. Based on the art and lore of Mike Franchina, whose illustrations you may have seen floating around on /tg/ for a several years now, and designed by Tuomas Pirinen, one of the original creators of Mordheim. It's grimdark, it's visceral, it's awesome, and it's very Blanchitsu.

>What Trench Crusade is not
TC not an excuse for you to discuss IRL religion, history that didn't occur in the game, culture war shit, or discord bullshit on /tg/. Keep it on topic.

>What's the QRD on the background?
The Knights Templar turned heretic and opened the Gates of Hell when they took Jerusalem during the First Crusade. Over 800 years later the war is still ongoing as technology has developed to a pseudo diesel-punk WW1 standard and a third of Humanity has sided with the Infernal Princes.

>How do I get started?
All the files are free online, but are split between the website and the discord. They have all been collected here for your convenience:

I never write my roleplays in a novelistic style.
My logs are always more like a list of actions and effects with most of the creative stuff being held in my head.
Ironsworn systems are ofc an exception but I don't think they lead to writing that would actually be good in a novel. Too much constant fucking up, you'd end up with one of those annoying stories where a protagonist can't walk between towns without it being an ordeal.
And even there every 2nd/3rd line in my notes is stuff like "Action 3, Challenge 7 3 Burn momentum Weak Hit" so it's not exactly great reading.

No preference, but average is boring. And it doesn't just apply to Dream Pod 9's Appearance stat. Had a blast playing a PF 1st edition 3 Intelligence sorcerer. Had a blast playing a wizard's that's opposed.

As long as I've got a weakness that does show up from time-to-time, be it a stat, a flaw like Shadowrun's Codes of Honor (God I loved that one) and remain mechanically viable / can contribute meaningfully, I'm golden.

Honestly I'm tired of muh eldritch cults and the lovecraftian mythos in horror. No one is genuinely scared or creeped out by them. People may gloat about how much of an intellectual idea cosmic horror is; being overwhelmed by the vastness of the universe and feeling powerless, blah blah blah.

Satanic cabals, witch covens and pagan cults do give people the creeps. Voodoo dolls, human sacrifices, blood rituals, hidden groves with celtic ruins, secret societies, actual ghosts and demons instead of otherworldly beings who don't give a shit about mankind. Horns and blood scare people more than tentacles and ooze.

>>96764962
> Lovecraftian entities are essentially just concepts or archetypes which are fully independent from humanity; things like Void, Eternity, Abyss, or Expanse.

Not a single one of them is. Where did you even get that from? What is scary about "not being at the top of the food chain" in space and hwo does that translate into gaming at the table? Witches, demons and pagan cults with minor deities are localized insidious threats as opposed to cosmic entities who most of the time mind their own business.

>>96763823

Just because the deities of the Mythos don't care about humans doesn't mean humans can't run into them and be immensely harmed in their wake.
Hell, one of the two starter scenarios the Call of Cthulhu rulebook gives you directly involves a Great Old One, Gla'aki, who makes an appearance at the scenario's end point and can start swatting the player characters down like bugs. And, I mean, the original "The Call of Cthulhu" story itself ends with a chase scene as sailors flee an awakening Cthulhu lest he crush them to death or feast on them as his morning snack.
A problem with a lot of pastiches of Lovecraft's works is that they're afraid to use the gods or involve them, which just isn't Lovecraftian. In the original works, the gods showed up or interacted with the characters all the time. They just largely didn't care, acting out their grander, more terrible functions, and the harm they cause is simply because they're too powerful and beyond us to want to be careful about us. A wayward flick of their wrist can destroy our entire civilization and they wouldn't notice.

The /btg/ is dead! Long live the /btg/!

How do you insert Pathfinders in btech? I assume you drop them in way in advance of the raid on the far from where a garrison would patrol. But the locals are gonna know something is up. Atlan Anon, there is no nice way to say this, but I think this is bloat. I simply do not see what this adds to the game or the lore, everything about it just seems awkward and unnecesary. Especially if they're not even going to be anti-British. It's not egregious to the point where I'd heavily oppose it, it just makes me feel nothing followed by mild annoyance that it exists only to make me feel nothing.
>>
>>96766086
From all the suggestions about the the Second Oriental Crisis, I would say that the rising was indeed massive, and it affected all lands that once belonged to the Ottoman Empire, with varying degrees of intensity (Anatolia having almost all of the dead rising from their graves, while areas like Tunisia or the danubian border having little to no effect, with the threat to them being the hordes of undead moving to them). However, this event was probably planned somewhat, though probably rushed due to the events at the beginning of the crisis. And to mantain some sort of balance, whatever Murad did to rise ALL of the dead without direct necromantic intervention cannot be just used again and again. Now, if you want to resurrect the dead, you need necromancers directly working with the corpses.

This way, the power of the husks is more balanced, both in numbers and in logistics.

I'm new to this and I have questions!

Is this a classless system?
How crunchy is it?
How does it handle battles?
How high is the risk of mortality?
>>
>>96766343
The game takes place in the 19th century, a rigid class society.
It's not crunchy at all, I just let my opponent do all the calculations for me.
The system is very combat-heavy and lethal, half my characters die every game.
Hi, I'm the resident shitposter. Serious answer: it's a skirmish wargame, not an RPG.

why would that be a controversial opinion?

not the anon you replied to, but:
>game where you can optionally do one thing (spend a key), then must do one out of 2 actions (buy card or get flipped card)
>game where you have to manage a hand of cards and have to choose one among 4 distinct actions (buy, play a technique, make a stack, discard) and some things give you more actions
>the first game "takes longer to explain" than the second one
I know that 9 out of 10 users that say "overcomplicated mess" are either complete, unironic retards or unfunny people who take the explanation, no matter how curt or plain it is, as a confirmation that it is indeed an "overcomplicated mess", but come on

It's kind of weird. My gut reaction is that this is chaep and faggy, but honestly I get it and it really doesn't matter if it fits

anyone here play Maquis? I've been wanted to get it for some time but been put off thinking it's a one-time puzzle that has no replayability once you solve it. Is my perception correct? Is Resist! a better option if i want a solo game based on similar themes?

Grand Austria Hotel with the Allez Waltz expansion gets pretty heavy. There's asymmetric player powers and alternate shared boards. It's also great base or base + skeleton key module at 4 players.

Thread prompt:
>Tell us about any great painters / composers / writers in your setting. Do you have descriptions of their great works? Or even, for madlads, examples?

>the top god of the setting is a deity of light
>worshipped in three manifestations - the Sun, the lightning bolt, and candlelight.
>feel content until I realize that the trinity can be summed up as the Lightning, the Sun and the Holy Fire, and it sounds like a bad punny pastiche of christianity
>English has no synonyms for the Sun
Fuck. What do?

Shift it around a bit so that the manifestations align with more meaningful day-to-day symbols/phenomena, maybe even divide the God into three faces or aspects.
Replace the Sun with the Dawn
>Represents the victory of light over darkness and the eternal nature of the Father of Light, who returns every day to bask his Children in holy light
Replace the Lightning Bolt with the Storm
>Even though Storms bring darkness to the sky, they themselves are full of light - for the Father's divine judgement is indeed fearsome. By bearing witness to this power the Children understand the depths of our Father's might - and through ritual and libations we pray keep his fury at bay.
Replace the Candlelight with the Hearth
>Do not presume that the fires of men are our own creation; we owe everything to the Father of Light. Though his grace, we are given the gift of Light and warmth unto ourselves.
Or something like that, this is just what came to my mind.

Yes, exactly. That is, unless his own future sight didn't tip him off beforehand.

Any battles between time controllers becomes really confusing to talk about because both are changing reality by forestalling each other's moves. It only makes sense if you assume different timelines.

Let's say a wizard lives in a tower, upper floor. He sleeps there every night. Let's say for simplicity he teleports there.
One night I travel back in time before the wizard move in and demolish the tower.
Will he fall to his death in the present I traveled from, or he will do so when he first time teleported into the non-existent top floor?

I always run into problem of "what they do day in and day out" especially for warrior and long-lived races. Let alone long-lived warrior races.
Take Giants, for instance. They are these mighty sages, who created Dwarfs in ages past. They don't farm, don't hunt, don't really build anymore (Dwarfs serve their needs, basically). They ponder the orb, guide the dwarfs (but not rule) and fight great evils. But that leaves them with zero hobbies or activities. They don't even have to train, due to their nature.

And then there are Sky Giants, who don't even eat, and don't hang out around Dwarves most of the time.

Of course I could just leave their activities a mystery, but I want to know for myself!
