For Centaurs, you should be able to use them as mounts when not in combat if they're lightly armed & armored. I think you could ride into battle with them and fight on their back without overburdening them, depending on your loadout. Squeezing into dungeons and caves might be a bit of a bitch, and your centaur companion may find themselves too cumbersome to accompany you in certain locations. If people in wheelchairs can make do, I'm sure a transmog potion or a shrinking potion might solve the problem.
>fantasy settings
They're more at home here for sure, like having a horse. Some taverns may give you a hard "no" for your centaur companion, but I'm sure regions that are steeped in centaur culture or adjacent ones have accommodations for their unique anatomy. If nothing else, they could help carry your camp supplies and other provisions.
>loadouts for fantasy
If you're not riding them, I think they can be pretty well armed and armored- think tower shield and a mace/flail. They also make good spearmen, so I think they'd be comfortable wielding a halbard and similar pike-style weapons. This would be with them wearing plate mail cuirass for the human portion and chainmail curtain over their horse hind quarters, or perhaps some specially fitted Gambeson. Other plate sections could be fitted to their horse body as needed. Archery and crossbows seem like they'd work for ranged options. I've not considered them using magic, but having a fairly mobile spellcaster seems cool as well.

If a humcan PC is riding a centaur PC and they dismount, do you charge the human half of their movement speed for the dismount? I was thinking about offering up some feat that allowed the rider to retain their movement after dismounting for some interesting movement mechanics. 40 feet + an additional 30 from the human rider.

Some folks were saying the idea of having a human and a centaur fighting while the human was on their back might be a little broken (two-player instances occupying the same space, I can see being a problem). Maybe make it so only the human or the centaur can attack per turn if the human is riding them? This would mean the player has to dismount the centaur to get their own battle action per turn.

If I had a magic wand and could fix Magic, I would make a new game client similar to Magic Arena, but instead of a million ways to play and a choice of BO1 or BO3, make one standardized format "Alchemy but good". Have a focus on good 1v1 gameplay.

I think this went unnoticed: there is a real chance of Penny Dreadful becoming a fully supported format on MTGO with Leagues and Challenges just like Premodern, this would have a gigantic impact on the in-game secondary market since people would be able to get Tier 1 decks for less than 10 tix to farm Leagues and compete in Challenges and in turn, PD rotations (when the price check happens) would get a lot more severe

Welcome to /wbg/, the official thread for the discussion of in-progress settings for traditional games.

Here is where you go to present and develop the details of your worlds such as lore, factions, magic and ecosystems. You can also post maps for your settings, as well as any relevant art (either created by you or used as inspiration for your work). Please remember that dialogue is what keeps the thread alive, so don't be afraid of giving someone feedback or post whatever relevant input you might have!

The suggestion is that you can't work with the failure of your player as a GM. But I think there are plenty of ways to deal with it. I'll keep to dnd vocabulary:
Study and practice costs money for reagents and inks and shit. You also need downtime because you use spell slots on the appropriate level when practicing. Some spells require rare reagents / materials to learn that will take some adventuring to obtain.
You need to find information on the spell, or have instruction from one who mastered it to attempt it. Experimentation without information or instruction will be more costly in time and reagents, and have a higher chance of failure. You can't attempt to learn a spell without information or instruction unless you have seen it being cast, or you can realistically argue that two or more spells you already know should give you enough insight to start the process.

In general, given the risks involved, populated areas don't take kindly to magical teachings and experimentation within their communities. Depending on local laws and customs you might face fines, exile, mob justice, the stink eye, theft/espionage from competitors, general displeasure, whatever. This is part of why wizard towers are a thing.

Failure to learn the spell can result in backfired spells. You might:
>take some damage
>turn yourself into a newt for 1d4 days
>block your chakras causing you to lose access to 2 spell slots of the level of the spell
> literally blow your hand off
>cause you to become "wild magicked" for 1d4 weeks
>a thundercloud follows you constantly inside and outside causing you to be soaked and take 1d4 lightning damage every 2 hours until dispelled
>you create a rift and 1d6 void imps enter and attack you

You're just a shit ass GM, if you call for a roll you should at least have 2 possible outcomes that you're interrogating the dice for, if you can only think of one there's no need to ask the dice for anything, just narrate the whole thing as an introduction to the actual scenario.
>inb4 muh illusionism and misdirection to trick the players
That shit may work if you're quick witted enough and your players drooling retards, from op story it was well apparent the GM was caught off-guard.

>What is Trench Crusade?
An alternate weird history 28mm/32mm tabletop skirmish game still in a pre-release playtesting phase but with the full release slated for this year. Based on the art and lore of Mike Franchina, whose illustrations you may have seen floating around on /tg/ for a several years now, and designed by Tuomas Pirinen, one of the original creators of Mordheim. It's grimdark, it's visceral, it's awesome, and it's very Blanchitsu.

>What Trench Crusade is not
TC not an excuse for you to discuss IRL religion, history that didn't occur in the game, culture war shit, or discord bullshit on /tg/. Keep it on topic.

>What's the QRD on the background?
The Knights Templar turned heretic and opened the Gates of Hell when they took Jerusalem during the First Crusade. Over 800 years later the war is still ongoing as technology has developed to a pseudo diesel-punk WW1 standard and a third of Humanity has sided with the Infernal Princes.

>How do I get started?
All the files are free online:
https://www.trenchcrusade.com/rules/

They used to be split between the website and the discord, but no more. For posterity's sake, the old mega will still be kept active even if it's unlikely to need updating: https://mega.nz/folder/70QH0BBa#Eg-blxYQKkY_C02wErnFTQ

Dragonlance draconians certainly act that way.
Charr from guild wars 2 are pretty much a modern military running a dieselpunk empire in a medieval fantasy setting.
Elder scrolls in some interpretations.
>>
>>97339216
You could argue there are several IRL examples of feudal or feudal-like countries with a somewhat modern army, ie. Pakistan, Saudi Arabia or (arguably) North Korea.

Historically you could read about pre-unification Germany or the Austro-Hungarian empire and just give them better rifles.

Not always. The Land Ironclads and the Difference Engine were both alternate history in the fact there was nothing fantastical about them beyond people pursuing certain vectors of technology that already existed at that point.

probably a fair bit tbqh, there's a lot of reading and you might need to know your history a bit. that's standard for a lot of LotFP books (and personally not my cup of tea).

The God That Crawls is 46 pages, quick read-through and then you have a church setting with characters, a monster, and a spooky dungeon. you could realistically just drop it in anywhere (could be Elizabethan England, could swap some names and then it's the Church of Corellon Larethian or whatever).

i'm a dungeon guy so the adventures that have a hexmap of 17th-century Germany or whatever simply do not appeal to me. but when LotFP stuff hits, it hits. Death Frost Doom is another quick dungeon (64 pages, including maps/miscellanea) and it's the most fun i've ever had with D&D. sort of an Evil Dead pastiche, with SOME of the edginess, but it's also a damn good dungeon.

ok, but we're discussing making a game so that's the relevant part. and we don't have to guess, we know, because /acg/ collectively have a ton of direct experience with netrunner. /acg/ was born out of /anrg/, and even after all these years I'd be surprised if it wasn't the game the largest number of us have in common in our collections.
plus whatever your thematic hangups are with cyberpunk megacorps, they don't directly translate to whatever faces you'd put on "the house" in a heist/con game. there's a lot of space in that theme. shit yes, playing the A-team or Oceans Eleven or the Italian Jobbers is fun, but the "villains" can definitely be compelling too. hell, going with your 'b-b-but all the little kids want to be good guys' argument, they're by default the more law-abiding ones since they're not doing the robbing.

anyhow doesnt mean much if theres not other anons interested in contributing. none of these shits are ever getting done if its only one anon working on it. show of hands?

What is the counterculture of 2020s, that could be used as the basis for a contemporary countercultural tabletop game?

Take the World of Darkness for example, which was so grounded in the the counterculture of the 90s that it comes across as dated and strange today. How would you update the World of Darkness so that it better represents the counterculture of today?

An aversion to the traditional late-20th-century work-life balance, disillusionment with traditional late-20th-century media (television) in favour of new digital media (streams and podcasts) and radical honesty about their beliefs and interests.

Being bold and outspoken, searching for digital media that compounds their views and cringing at the thought of letting wageslavery define them are traits shared by all of the countercultural groups you listed and more. Which is reasonable, as at least two out of three of those traits are shared with the countercultures of prior generations.

I like Werewolf: the Apocalypse more than any other World of Darkness game.

Modern WoD would either be Werewolf-esque eco-terrorism or a permutation of Mage. The Technocracy still works as the group to rail against, they're just no longer a proper union with the conventions clashing in some areas while coming together on certain issues.

The NWO, Syndicate, Iterators, Progenitors, and Engineers, as well as whatever you would want to add on that isn't covered by those conventions, are constantly butting heads, but they're still the heads of the same Terranorming, absolutist hydra.

IMO, modern counter-culture is pulling an Uncle Ted and escaping the soul-shredding agony matrix of modernity. Perhaps this could be expressed through having players journey towards 'Escape' or 'Exodus' similar to attaining humanity in Promethean.
