>>96424446I'm going to compare this to other systems to help explain the 'problem' as I see it.In something like Exalted, you get stunt dice for bothering to flavor what you are doing. Getting two additional dice in a pool is a big deal (potentially more if you really go all out) so you're probably going to go out of your way to do at least a two dice stunt every attack. Even supernatural creatures can be remarkably fragile. Makes you appreciate every risk you take and every attack. You can potentially end Exalt versus Exalt fights in ONE well-placed attack.Where are we at in the typical game of DND? A single round of combat is rarely decisive, and for all that effort of flavoring how cool your character is you roll under 10 anyway and beef it. This is going to repeat a lot, and even your successes are generally not the deciding blow. Yeah, you're putting way too much energy into nothing. My recommendation? Let people do nonstandard actions without need for feats or skills. On one condition. They HAVE to sell it. Sell it hard. Then they can roll to do it as part of an attack. They succeed? Enemy has an appropriate status. Be more generous the more extra they go, but they have to SELL SELL SELL. The bigger a thing they want to cause? The more they got to put into the description. Rewards effort, but use is limited by it's nature.

>>96450114Often there isn't any more prep needed (or really possible) other than remembering relevant names and nouns, and responding to your players.A lot of the locations and even NPCs are intended to be improvised almost completely by you, so if you're not comfy doing that you could write those descriptions ahead of time, but usually the motivations and pertinent details are included in the shotgun text.

Trying to hammer out a solid setting/headcanon for a unified Alien/Predator universe. Here's my take on what to keep , what to shitcan and what to add:>Things to KEEP: The Queen and the hive from Aliens. Gives the bugs a purpose beyond just being murder-insects. Diverse Alein lifeforms (e.g., the T. Ocellus from the Alein Earth). Gritty corporate dystopia. Weyland-Yutani is the real villain. "Truckers in space" aesthetic is mandatory. The Engineer/Forerunner concept, but ONLY as a way to explain panspermia. It elegantly explains why so many species are biologically compatible (e.g., Facehuggers working on humans and Yautja). It also supports my favorite fan theory: the Yautja didn't invent their advanced technology; they inherited or reverse-engineered it. This explains how a tribal, honor-based society can also have plasma casters and FTL ships.>Things to discard:The AvP movie lore. Predators did not build pyramids on Earth. The Human/Xenomorph Hybrid (looking at you, Newborn): This completely demystifies the Xenomorph for me. The horror of the Alien is its otherness. It's already the ultimate killer because it takes traits from its host—it's already optimized to hunt us. Making it more human just makes it less scary. The "Magic" Black Goo: As it stands in the prequel films, the goo is a narrative crutch. It can create, it can destroy, it can mutate... it can do whatever the plot needs. I'd either discard it entirely or give it hard, consistent rules.>Things to ADD: More alien life in general. The galaxy feels way too empty with just humans, Xenos, and Preds.Comment too long. >>96417316minecraft?
>>96417281>The AvP movie lore. Predators did not build pyramids on Earth.Lame
>>96454059That bit was fun.
>>96438502Pretty sure they don't have the license for AvP material (not the films and video-games anyway, maybe the comics; the Blood and Stone series seem to be in the same continuity as Covenant, which they seem to have the license for).My main recommendations:Don't make all human groups over-the-top evil, and especially not totally retarded. WY in expanded universe go from ruthless company to evil empire and it isn't an improvement. You need the PCs to come from a flawed but basically decent society in order to have the 'everyman hero' vibe. Nostromo crew are shocked that they were expendable, Ripley wants Burke to stand trial with some confidence he will be punished, etc. They don't live in a grimdark dystopia.Implications for bio-tech from the alien are huge. Just being able to integrate host DNA into new form is a big deal. Concept of transhuman upgrades from Romulus was good, implementation not so much.Alien is cosmic horror, don't be afraid to have the aliens be more than animalistic monsters. Queen is obviously smart. Hive could be the start of something more complex, like a bio-mechanical technology base (see similarity to space jockey stuff). Should be actually alien and mostly incomprehensible though. Gives another motive to mess with them beyond just medical stuff.Independent evil AI/synthetics and creepy transhumans are good supplements to the bad-guy line up. Commies (UPP) and criminals too. Don't have corps and bugs be the only threats.
Both O'Bannon and Geiger were big Lovecraft fans and said that Yog-Sothery was a major inspiration for Alien (incomprehensible alien monsters, uncaring universe, even details like the eggs being kind of Elder-Thing shaped). How would you play that element up? What parts of the mythos would be a good fit?Black goo has something of a Shoggoth (or FSoT) vibe to it (i.e. living black liquid, associated with ancient aliens, who suffered a disaster, possibly due to their creation running out of control). AI / synthetics hint at possibly 'going shoggoth' on humans a few times (most notably, David in Covenant).Space jockey has a superficial resemblance to Rhan-Tegoth, Chaugnar Faugn, and Yag-Kosha due to the trunk (and being a huge, weird space alien).Novelisation of Alien mentions some kind of futuristic trained dreaming. Think this is expanded a bit elsewhere with dream recordings or something. Could tie in to dreamlands, I guess?A:E has transmission of consciousness (or at least a facsimile of personality) into new bodies. Big theme in Lovecraftian horror (Thing on the Doorstep, Shadow Out of Time).

>>96442971Yep, that about covers it.
Dragons are one of the archetypal things you expect to see in fantasy, arguably even more than other mainstays of the genre like Elves, Dwarves, Gandalf-style wizards, etc. Be they monsters, incarnations of pure Good, Evil, or some other force or being, actual gods or other divine beings, shapeshifters who can take on human form as needed, or what, Dragons seem to capture our imaginations like no other, with cultures all over the world having legends of dragons and similar creatures. So, I figure it couldn’t hurt to talk about how you handle dragons on your own settings, and what your favorite depictions are. Art of dragons is fine too!
>>96455250For me dragons are weapons created by the god of creation as weapons in his quest to indirectly become the singular capital G God.

>>96421638>do you all think the interiors of the cargo pods on the BFF-1 are accessable via interior gangways or not?Yes. Star Wars ships should feel like interwar aircraft with lots of silly features that wouldn't appear in optimized designs (think things like passenger planes with corridors in the wings so the mechanic can reach the engines during flight). You'd still need to answer the question of whether or not the BFF-1 containers are detachable from the drive section. It seems like they should be, but I think X-Wing implied otherwise. I was always unclear about whether the BFF-1 was a properly engineered ship or something a second-tier manufacturer built from recycled parts that ended up being a big success despite that.

Every time I search for a cool "barbarian" in some RPG, no matter if it's dark fantasy or not, it's always the half-naked dude or chick that looks like he / she has just wake up after an university party. It gives the same vibes that you get from watching an historical film and for some reason, the filmmakers hate natural colors and must put a filter that ruins your immersion. Is it there a good RPG with proper "barbarians"?
>>96458016Doesn't the word actually translate to babbler. the whole thing was basically a crack at their language.

You want Gallic people from the beginning of the Roman Empire? What the fuck do YOU mean when you say "Barbarian?" Because all that the word means is "Not Hellenized" and then later "Not Romanized."The image we have of "barbarians" mostly comes from Conan and the stuff that contributed to those stories is pretty varied and includes a lot of really ugly, early twentieth century and late nineteenth century psuedo-science and psuedo-archeology.
>>96457768>Is it there a good RPG with proper "barbarians"?This is a useless question because it depends on the setting of your game.
